Methysergide injected bilaterally into the lateral parabrachial nucleus (LPBN) increases NaCl intake in several models of renin-dependent salt appetite. The present study investigated the role of angiotensin Type 1 (AT(1)) receptors in the subfornical organ (SFO) on this effect. The intake of 0.3 M NaCl and water was induced by combined administration of the diuretic, furosemide (FURO), and the angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor, captopril (CAP). Pretreatment of the SFO with an AT, receptor antagonist, losartan (1 mu g/200 nl), reduced water intake but not 0.3 M NaCl intake induced by subcutaneous FURO + CAP. Methysergide (4 mu g/200 nl) injected bilaterally into the LPBN increased 0.3 M NaC1 intake after FURO + CAP. Losartan injected into the SFO prevented the additional 0.3 M NaC1 intake caused by LPBN methysergide injections. These results indicate that AT, receptors located in the SFO may have a role in mediating an enhanced sodium intake produced by methysergide treatment. (C) 1998 Elsevier B.V. B.V. Sodium chloride intake was studied in male Holtzman rats weighing 250-300 g submitted to electrolytic and chemical lesion of the cell bodies, not fibers of the amygdaloid complex. Sodium chloride (1.5%) intake increased in animals with electrolytic lesion of the corticomedial nucleus of the amygdala. Sodium chloride (1.5%) intake increased after ibotenic acid injection into the corticomedial nucleus of the amygdala to a larger extent (26.6 +/- 9.2 to 147.6 +/- 34.6 ml/5 days). The results indicate that sodium intake response can be induced by lesions, which involved only cell bodies. The fibers of passage of the corticomedial nucleus of the amygdala produce a water intake less consistent than that induced by ibotenic acid, which is more acute. The results show that cell bodies of this region of the amygdala are involved in the control of sodium chloride intake.

The present study investigated the effects of bilateral injections of the nonselective CCK receptor antagonist proglumide or CCK-8 into the lateral parabrachial nuclei (LPBN) on the ingestion of 0.3 M NaCl and water induced by intracerebroventricular injection of ANG II or by a combined treatment with subcutaneous furosemide (Furo) + captopril (Cap). Compared with the injection of saline (vehicle), bilateral LPBN injections of proglumide (50 mu g . 200 nl(-1). site(-1)) increased the intake of 0.3 ill NaCl induced by intracerebroventricular ANG II (50 ng/1 mu l). Bilateral injections of proglumide into the LPBN also increased ANG II-induced water intake when NaCl was simultaneously available, but not when only water was present. Similarly, the ingestion of 0.3 M NaCl and water induced by the treatment with Furo (10 mg/kg) + Cap (5 mg/kg) was increased by bilateral LPBN proglumide pretreatment. Bilateral CCK-8 (0.5 mu g . 200 nl(-1). site(-1)) injections into the LPBN did not change Furo + Cap-induced 0.3 M NaCl intake but reduced water consumption. When only water was available after intracerebroventricular ANG II, bilateral LPBN injections of proglumide or CCK-8 had no effect or significantly reduced water intake compared with LPBN vehicle-treated rats. Taken together, these results suggest that CCK actions in the LPBN play a modulatory role on the control of NaCl and water intake induced by experimental treatments that induce hypovolemia and/or hypotension or that mimic those states.

Adult male rats (n = 5-7 per group) were water deprived for 24 h with only food available. Then they had access to water for 2 h. At the end of the 2 h, 1.5% NaCl was offered to the animals and the intake was measured for another 2 h. The rats drank an average of 9.8 +/- 3.0 ml/120 min of 1.5% NaCl; water intake during this time was negligible (not more than 1.0 ml/120 min). Captopril injected IP at the doses of 12 and 24 mg/kg induced 60-90% inhibition of the intake. Losartan or PD123319 injected ICV induced 50-80% inhibition of the intake. Losartan (80 nmol) inhibited the intake at a lower dose than PD123319 (160 nmol). Neither losartan nor PD123319 inhibited 10% sucrose intake. The inhibition of 1.5% NaCl intake was not related to alterations in arterial pressure. The results show that the antagonism of the renin-angiotensin system inhibits the 1.5% NaCl intake induced by water deprivation. The inhibition induced by the angiotensin II antagonists suggest that this peptide is important for the control of salt intake induced by water deprivation.

In the present study, noradrenaline (NOR, alpha-non-specific adrenergic agonist), clonidine (CLO, alpha(2)), phenylephrine (PHE, alpha(1)) or isoproterenol (ISO, beta-agonist) was injected in the medial septal area (MSA) of water-deprived, sodium-deplete or food-deprived rats. NOR (80, 160 nmol) inhibited the intake of 3% NaCl, water deprivation-induced and meal-associated water intake. Food deprivation-induced food intake and 10% sucrose intake were not altered by NOR. CLO (10, 20, 30, 40 nmol) inhibited (80-100% inhibition compared to control during 60 min) the intake of 3% NaCl, water deprivation-induced and meal-associated water intake. CLO had a weaker inhibition on food and 10% sucrose intake (30-50% less than the control during 60 and 15 min, respectively). PHE (160 nmol) inhibited 3% NaCl intake and 10% sucrose intake (30% less than the control for 15-30 min). ISO (160 nmol) did not after water or 3% NaCl intake. NOR induced an increase, CLO and ISO induced a decrease, and PHE no alteration in mean arterial pressure. NOR did not alter water or 3% NaCl intake when injected unilaterally into the caudate nucleus. The results suggest that NOR injected in the MSA acts on alpha(2)-adrenergic receptors inducing a specific inhibition of 3% NaCl and water intake. (C) 1997 Elsevier B.V.

The present experiments were conducted to investigate the role of the alpha (1A)-, alpha (1B), beta (1),- and beta (2)-adrenoceptors of the lateral hypothalamus (LH) on the water and salt intake responses elicited by subfornical organ (SFO) injection of angiotensin II (ANG II) in rats. 5-methylurapidil (an alpha (1A)-adrenergic antagonist), cyclazosin (an alpha (1B)-adrenergic antagonist) and ICI-118,551 (a beta (2)-adrenergic antagonist) injected into the LH produced a dose-dependent reduction, whereas efaroxan (an alpha (2)-antagonist) increased the water intake induced by administration of ANG II into the SFO. These data show that injection of 5-methylurapidil into the LH prior to ANG II into the SFO increased the water and sodium intake induced by the injection of ANG II. The present data also show that atenolol (a beta (1)-adrenergic antagonist), ICI-118,551, cyclazosin, or efaroxan injected into the LH reduced in a dose-dependent manner the water and sodium intake to angiotensinergic activation of SFO. Thus, the alpha (1)- and beta -adrenoceptors of the LH are possibly involved with central mechanisms dependent on ANG II and SFO that control water and sodium intake. (C) 2000 Elsevier B.V. B.V. The effect of treatment of seeds of Oryza sativa L. cv. IAC 165 with gibberellic acid, 6-benzyladenine and ethrel on the tolerance to the water stress were analysed. Gibberellic acid had no effect and 6-benzyladenine and ethrel promoted slight increase in the tolerance to water stress, specially in darkness. After scarification, those growth regulator presented no effect. Our results suggest that 6-benzyladenine and ethrel promoted water stress tolerance due to the decrease in the resistance of the seed coat to embryo expansion.

The simultaneous formation of nanometer sized zinc oxide (ZnO), and acetate zinc hydroxide double salt (Zn-HDS) is described. These phases, obtained using the sol-gel synthesis route based on zinc acetate salt in alcoholic media, were identified by direct characterization of the reaction products in solution using complementary techniques: nephelometry, in situ Small-Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS), UV-Vis spectroscopy and Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structures (EXAFS). In particular, the hydrolytic pathway of ethanolic zinc acetate precursor solutions promoted by addition of water with the molar ratio N = [H2O]/[Zn2+] = 0.05 was investigated in this paper. The aim was to understand the formation mechanism of ZnO colloidal suspension and to reveal the factors responsible for the formation of Zn-HDS in the final precipitates. The growth mechanism of ZnO nanoparticles is based on primary particle (radius approximate to 1.5 nm) rotation inside the primary aggregate (radius < 3.5 nm) giving rise to an epitaxial attachment of particles and then subsequent coalescence. The growth of second ZnO aggregates is not associated with the Otswald ripening, and could be associated with changes in equilibrium between solute species induced by the superficial etching of Zn-HDS particles at the advanced stage of kinetic.

This study investigated the effects of bilateral injections of a serotonin (5-HT) receptor agonist into the lateral parabrachial nucleus (LPBN) on the intake of NaCl and water induced by 24-h water deprivation or by sodium depletion followed by 24 h of sodium deprivation (injection of the diuretic furosemide plus 24 h of sodium-deficient diet). Rats had stainless steel cannulas implanted bilaterally into the LPBN. Bilateral LPBN injections of the serotonergic 5-HT1/2 receptor antagonist methysergide (4 mu g/200 nl at each site) increased hypertonic NaCl intake when tested 24 h after sodium depletion and after 24 h of water deprivation. Water intake also increased after bilateral injections of methysergide into the LPBN. In contrast, the intake of a palatable solution (0.06 M sucrose) under body fluid-replete conditions was not changed after bilateral LPBN methysergide injections. The results show that serotonergic mechanisms in the LPBN modulate water and sodium intake induced by volume depletion and sodium loss. The finding that sucrose intake was not affected by LPBN serotonergic blockade suggests that the effects of the methysergide treatment on the intakes of water and NaCl are not due to a mechanism producing a nonspecific enhancement of all ingestive behaviors.

In this study we investigated: (a) the effects of intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) injections of moxonidine (an alpha(2)-adrenergic and imidazoline receptor agonist) on the ingestion of water and NaCl induced by 24 h of water deprivation; (b) the effects of i.c.v. injection of moxonidine on central angiotensin II (ANG II)- and carbachol-induced water intake; (c) the effects of the pre-treatment with i.c.v, idazoxan (an alpha(2)-adrenergic and imidazoline receptor antagonist) and RX 821002 (a selective alpha(2)-adrenergic antagonist) on the antidipsogenic action of central moxonidine. Male Holtzman rats had stainless steel cannulas implanted in the lateral cerebral ventricle. Intracerebroventricular injection of moxonidine (5 and 20 nmol/1 mu l) reduced the ingestion of 1.5% NaCl solution (4.1 +/- 1.1 and 2.9 +/- 2.5 ml/2 h, respectively vs. control = 7.4 +/- 2.1 ml/2 h) and water intake (2.0 +/- 0.6 and 0.3 +/- 0.2 ml/h, respectively vs. control = 13.0 +/- 1.4 ml/h) induced by water deprivation, Intracerebroventricular moxonidine (5 nmol/1 mu l) also reduced i.c.v. ANG Ii-induced water intake (2.8 +/- 0.9 vs. control = 7.9 +/- 1.7 ml/1 h) and i.c.v. moxonidine (10 and 20 nmol/1 mu l) reduced i.c.v. carbachol-induced water intake (4.3 +/- 1.7 and 2.1 +/- 0.9, respectively vs. control = 9.2 +/- 1.0 ml/1 h). The pre-treatment with i.c.v. idazoxan (40 to 320 nmol/1 mu l) abolished the inhibitory effect of i.c.v, moxonidine on carbachol-induced water intake. Intracerebroventricular idazoxan (320 nmol/1 mu l) partially reduced the inhibitory effect of moxonidine on water deprivation-induced water intake and produced only a tendency to reduce the antidipsogenic effect of moxonidine on ANG Ii-induced water intake. RX 821002 (80 and 160 nmol/1 mu l) completely abolished the antidipsogenic action of moxonidine on ANG Ii-induced water intake. The results show that central injections c: moxonidine strongly inhibit water and NaCl ingestion. They also suggest the involvement of central alpha(2)-adrenergic receptors in the antidipsogenic action of moxonidine. (C) 1999 Elsevier B.V.

This study investigated the roles of serotonin (5-HT) receptors in the lateral parabrachial nucleus (LPBN), and brain angiotensin type 1 (AT(1)) receptors in the intake of 0.3 M NaCl and water induced by angiotensin II (ANG II). Rats were implanted with stainless steel cannulas for injections into tho subfornical organ (SFO) and into the LPBN. Bilateral LPBN pretreatment with the nonselective serotonergic 5-HT1/5-HT2 receptor antagonist methysergide (4 mu g/200 nl) markedly enhanced 0.3 M NaCl intake induced by injections of ANG II (20 ng/200 nl) into the SFO. Pretreatment of the SFO with the AT(1) receptor antagonist losartan (1 mu g/200 nl) blocked the intake of 0.3 M NaCl induced by ANG II in combination with LPBN methysergide injections. These results suggest that serotonergic mechanisms associated with the LPBN inhibit the expression of salt appetite induced by ANG II injections into Ihs SFO. In addition, the results indicate that the enhanced NaCl intake generated by central administration of ANG II in the presence of LPBN 5-HT blockade is mediated bg brain ATI receptors.

The periventricular tissue of the anterior ventral portion of the third ventricle (AV3V) is an important area for the control of hydromineral balance and of cardiovascular function. The present work discusses the importance of the integrity of the AV3V for multiple responses to central cholinergic activation (water intake, hypertension, natriuresis, salivation) and for the control of salt intake.

The subfornical organ (SFO) and the lateral hypothalamus (LH) have been shown to be important for the central action of angiotensin II (ANG II) on water and salt regulation. Several anatomical findings have demonstrated neural connections between the SFO and the LH. The present experiments were conducted to investigate the role of the α-adrenergic antagonists and agonists injected into the LH on the water and salt intake elicited by injections of ANG II into the SFO. Prazosin (an α1-adrenergic antagonist) injected into the LH increased the salt ingestion, whereas yohimbine (an α2-adrenergic antagonist) and propranolol (a β-adrenergic antagonist) antagonized the salt ingestion induced by administration of ANG II into the SFO. Previous administration of clonidine (an α2-adrenergic agonist) or noradrenaline into the LH increased, whereas pretreatment with phenylephrine decreased the sodium intake induced by injection of ANG II into the SFO. Previous treatment with prazosin and propranolol reduced the water intake induced by ANG II. Phenylephrine increased the dipsogenic responses produced by ANG II, whereas previous treatment with clonidine injected into the LH reduced the water intake induced by ANG II administration into the SFO. The LH involvement with SFO on the excitatory and inhibitory mechanisms related to water and sodium intake is suggested.

A theoretical model was developed in order to determine the optimal moment for substituting the sprayer and pressure regulator kit on a center pivot irrigation machine. The model is based on the hypothesis that pressure regulator and sprayer deterioration decrease irrigation uniformity. To compensate the deficit that happens at under irrigated areas, an increase on irrigation depth is required. The model considers: additional water consumption and energy costs, maintenance and labor costs, as well as yield losses associated with under or over irrigated areas. The sum of all these components is compared to buying and installing a new spray kit cost, allowing the farmer to decide the best moment to renovate the sprayer and pressure regulator kits on a center pivot irrigation machine based on economic criteria.

A theoretical model developed by the authors for determining the optimal moment to substitute sprayer and pressure regulator kit on a center pivot irrigating potatoes and beans has been applied. The methodology compares the sum of the costs due to additional consumption of water and energy, maintenance and labor, as well as yield losses associated to areas with deficit or over irrigation to the costs due to buy and install a new sprinkling set on the pivot. The results showed that for a reduction of 3.07% of the Hermann and Hein’s Uniformity Coefficient (UCh), the substitution of the sprinkling module on the pivot is justified when potatoes and beans are cultivated.
