Stomach contents analysis (SCA) provides a snap-shot observation of a consumer's diet. Interpretation of SCA data can be complicated by many factors, including variation in gastric residence times and digestion rates among prey taxa. Although some SCA methods are reported to efficiently remove all stomach contents, the effectiveness of these techniques has rarely been tested for large irregular shaped prey with hard exoskeletons. We used a controlled feeding trial to estimate gastric residency time and decomposition rate of a large crustacean prey item, the Blue Crab (Callinectes sapidus), which is consumed by American Alligators (Alligator mississippiensis), an abundant apex predator in coastal habitats of the southeastern United States. The decomposition rate of C. sapidus in the stomachs of A. mississippiensis followed a predictable pattern, and some crab pieces remained in stomachs for at least 14 days. We also found that certain portions of C. sapidus were prone to becoming caught within the stomach or esophagus, meaning not all crab parts are consistently recovered using gastric lavage techniques. However, because the state of decomposition of crabs was predictable, it is possible to estimate time since consumption for crabs recovered from wild alligators. This information, coupled with a detailed understanding of crab distributions and alligator movement tactics could help elucidate patterns of cross-ecosystem foraging by the American Alligator in coastal habitats.

Rates of survival of victims of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) using cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) have shown little improvement over the past three decades. Since registered nurses (RNs) comprise the largest group of healthcare providers in U.S. hospitals, it is essential that they are competent in performing the four primary measures (compression, ventilation, medication administration, and defibrillation) of CPR in order to improve survival rates of SCA patients. The purpose of this experimental study was to test a color-coded SMOCK system on: 1) time to implement emergency patient care measures 2) technical skills performance 3) number of medical errors, and 4) team performance during simulated CPR exercises. The study sample was 260 RNs (M 40 years, SD=11.6) with work experience as an RN (M 7.25 years, SD=9.42).Nurses were allocated to a control or intervention arm consisting of 20 groups of 5-8 RNs per arm for a total of 130 RNs in each arm. Nurses in each study arm were given clinical scenarios requiring emergency CPR. Nurses in the intervention group wore different color labeled aprons (smocks) indicating their role assignment (medications, ventilation, compression, defibrillation, etc) on the code team during CPR. Findings indicated that the intervention using color-labeled smocks for pre-assigned roles had a significant effect on the time nurses started compressions (t=3.03, p=0.005), ventilations (t=2.86, p=0.004) and defibrillations (t=2.00, p=.05) when compared to the controls using the standard of care. In performing technical skills, nurses in the intervention groups performed compressions and ventilations significantly better than those in the control groups. The control groups made significantly (t=-2.61, p=0.013) more total errors (7.55 SD 1.54) than the intervention group (5.60, SD 1.90). There were no significant differences in team performance measures between the groups. Study findings indicate use of colored labeled smocks during CPR emergencies resulted in: shorter times to start emergency CPR; reduced errors; more technical skills completed successfully; and no differences in team performance.

The ability to use Software Defined Radio (SDR) in the civilian mobile applications will make it possible for the next generation of mobile devices to handle multi-standard personal wireless devices and ubiquitous wireless devices. The original military standard created many beneficial characteristics for SDR, but resulted in a number of disadvantages as well. Many challenges in commercializing SDR are still the subject of interest in the software radio research community. Four main issues that have been already addressed are performance, size, weight, and power. ^ This investigation presents an in-depth study of SDR inter-components communications in terms of total link delay related to the number of components and packet sizes in systems based on Software Communication Architecture (SCA). The study is based on the investigation of the controlled environment platform. Results suggest that the total link delay does not linearly increase with the number of components and the packet sizes. The closed form expression of the delay was modeled using a logistic function in terms of the number of components and packet sizes. The model performed well when the number of components was large. ^ Based upon the mobility applications, energy consumption has become one of the most crucial limitations. SDR will not only provide flexibility of multi-protocol support, but this desirable feature will also bring a choice of mobile protocols. Having such a variety of choices available creates a problem in the selection of the most appropriate protocol to transmit. An investigation in a real-time algorithm to optimize energy efficiency was also performed. Communication energy models were used including switching estimation to develop a waveform selection algorithm. Simulations were performed to validate the concept.^

Aim : To evaluate and to standardize surface electromyography (sEMG) normalization procedures for respiratory muscles by comparing muscle activation during Maximal Voluntary Isometric Contraction (MVIC) and Maximal Respiratory Pressures (MIP, MEP and sniff test). Methods: Healthy subjects were evalua ted regarding demographics, spirometry and sEMG during the five maneuvers: sniff test, MIP , MEP and Maximal Voluntary Isometric C ontraction (MVIC) of RA, SCM and SC A . For electrode placement, skin was prepared with abrasion, followed by shaving in the foll owing regions for acquisition of el ectromyographic signals: (1) SC M: lower third of the distance between the mastoid process and t he sternoclavicular joint; (2) SC A : 5 cm to the right from the sternoclavicular joint and at this point, up to 2 cm; and (3 ) RA: the level of umbilicus, 4 cm to the right. In electromyographic variables analysis , the data normality was assessed by Shapiro - Wilk test. Comparisons among studied maneuvers were performed by Friedman Test and Dunn’s post - hoc for multiple comparisons a mong inspiratory maneuvers, and Mann Whitney test for expiratory maneuvers. Subgroups differences between genders were performed by Student's t test or Mann - Whitney test according to data normality. Results: 35 subjects participated in the study, b ut 5 we re excluded (BMI> 25 kg/ m²). Sample consisted of 30 subjects (1 5 women), mean age 27.3±7.43 years, BMI 22.2 ± 1.69 kg/m² and spirometric indices within normal limits. Specific MVIC for SCM, SCA and RA showed the highest RMS. When we grouped sample into gender we found no difference among RMS values for the studied SCM maneuvers, while for SCA, MVIC SCM / SCA was the one with the highest RMS and for RA, MVIC RA in men. Once considering women, MVIC SCM/SCA showed the highest RMS for SCM, SCA and MVIC RA showed t he highest value for RA. Conclusion: MVIC for SCM, SCA and RA muscles showed the highest RMS values. When comparing RMS between the studied groups, there was no significant difference between men and women.

As the development of a viable quantum computer nears, existing widely used public-key cryptosystems, such as RSA, will no longer be secure. Thus, significant effort is being invested into post-quantum cryptography (PQC). Lattice-based cryptography (LBC) is one such promising area of PQC, which offers versatile, efficient, and high performance security services. However, the vulnerabilities of these implementations against side-channel attacks (SCA) remain significantly understudied. Most, if not all, lattice-based cryptosystems require noise samples generated from a discrete Gaussian distribution, and a successful timing analysis attack can render the whole cryptosystem broken, making the discrete Gaussian sampler the most vulnerable module to SCA. This research proposes countermeasures against timing information leakage with FPGA-based designs of the CDT-based discrete Gaussian samplers with constant response time, targeting encryption and signature scheme parameters. The proposed designs are compared against the state-of-the-art and are shown to significantly outperform existing implementations. For encryption, the proposed sampler is 9x faster in comparison to the only other existing time-independent CDT sampler design. For signatures, the first time-independent CDT sampler in hardware is proposed.

The study aims to provide information on efficiency opportunities on SCA's northbound cassettes. It has been made by examining the capacity utilization rate on the northbound cassettes on SCA's vessels for a period of two weeks. The cargo loaded in the ports of Rotterdam and Sheerness consists of external cargo of varying shape. The cargo is shipped northbound to Holmsund and Sundsvall. Measurements have been made on the cargo to the final destinations Sundsvall, Holmsund and Finland. The measurements have been used in a mathematical optimization model created to optimize the loading of the cassettes. The model is based on placing boxes in a grid where the boxes that are placed representing the cargo and the grids representing the cassettes. The aim of the model is to reduce the number of cassettes and thereby increase the capacity utilization rate. The study resulted in an increase in capacity utilization rate for both area and volume to all destinations. The overall improvement for all cassettes examined resulted in an increase in the area capacity utilization rate by 9.02 percentage points and 5.72 percentage points for the volume capacity utilization rate. It also resulted in a decrease of 22 cassettes in total on the four voyages that were examined which indicate that there are opportunities to improve the capacity utilization rate. The study also shows that the model can be used as a basis for similar problems.

La hipertensión intra-abdominal (HIA) y el síndrome compartamental abdominal (SCA) son causa importante de morbi-mortalidad postoperatoria. Avances en su diagnóstico y tratamiento oportuno han proporcionado mejor sobrevida en estos pacientes. Objetivo. Determinar la prevalencia de HIA, SCA y asociarla con (hallazgos quirúrgicos, presión de perfusión Intra-abdominal (PPI), obesidad) intervenidos por abdomen agudo en el Departamento de Cirugía del Hospital Vicente Corral Moscoso de Cuenca. Metodología. Se realizó un estudio transversal analítico en pacientes mayores de 16 años que ameritaron laparotomía de septiembre de 2010 hasta agosto de 2011 y que cumplieron criterios de exclusión, la PIA fue medida mediante método indirecto y la información se recopilo en un formulario elaborado para el estudio. Resultados: 347 Pacientes fueron incluidos en el estudio, la media de edad se ubicó en 46.72 ± 22.30 años, presentaron sobrepeso el 5.2%, en el estadio pre-quirúrgico se encontró Hipertensión Intra-abdominal en 41.2% y 10.4% de síndrome compartamental; luego de la laparotomía la hipertensión intra-abdominal disminuyó a 37.7% y el síndrome compartamental a 8.4%. La PIA iguales o mayores a 12mmHg aumentan el riesgo de hipo-perfusión intestinal en 3.56 veces (IC 95%: 1.81-6.99), p menor que 0.05; la obesidad se comportó como factor de riesgo con un RP de 1.73 (1.451-2.13); los hallazgo quirúrgico encontrados fueron significativos para Abdomen agudo perforativo: 2.45 con IC 95% 1.91-3.13; Abdomen agudo hemorrágico 1.83 con IC 95% 1.46-2.30 y Abdomen agudo oclusivo intestinal 2.32 con IC 95% 2.05-2.64. Conclusión: La Hipertensión intra-abdominal disminuye progresivamente en el postoperatorio, mientras que en quienes se manifiesta el SCA permaneció elevado por mayor tiempo. Se evidencio que la Obesidad influye incrementando la PIA, la misma que produce disminución de la PPI prediciendo peor pronóstico; los hallazgos quirúrgicos representativos para el incremento de la PIA fueron el abdomen agudo perforativo y oclusivo .au

Colorectal cancer (CRC) results from histologic and gene alterations can lead to a massive cellular proliferation. Most of the authors assume multifactorial causes to CRC genesis. Low physical activity, a fat diet poor in fibers and smoking habits seems to have an important role in CRC. However, there are also genetic causes associated with CRC risk. It has been described that oxidative stress levels could influence CRC development. Thus, cellular balance reactive species and defense enzymes involved in oxidative stress are crucial to maintain a good tissue function and avoid neoplasic process. Therefore, genome variations on these defense enzymes, such as MNSOD, SOD3, GSTP1, GSTT1 and GSTM1, could be important biomarkers to colorectal adenocarcinomas. We intend to determine frequencies distribution of most common polymorphisms involved on oxidative stress regulation (MNSOD, SOD3, GSTP1, GSTT1 and GSTM1) in patients with sporadic colorectal adenocarcinoma (SCA) and in healthy controls, evaluation their possible correlation with SCA risk. Samples common polymorphisms of antioxidant and detoxify genes (MNSOD T175C, SOD3 R213G, GSTP1 A105G, GSTP1 C114T, GSTT1del and GSTM1del) analysis was done by PCR-SSP techniques. In this study we found a higher prevalence of MNSOD 175CC (55% vs 2%; p<0.0001; OR: 58.5; CI 13.3 to 256.7), SOD3 213GG (31% vs 2%; p<0.0001; OR: 21.89; CI 4.93 to 97.29), GSTP1 105GG (46% vs 12%; p<0.0001; OR: 6.14; CI 2.85 to 13.26), GSTP1 114TT (38% vs 0%; p<0.0001; OR: Infinity) and GSTT1 null (75% vs 28%; p<0.0001; OR: 7.71; CI 3.83 to 15.56) mutated genotypes among SCA patients, while the normal genotypes were associated with SCA absence. Furthermore, we found GSTP1 114TT mutated genotype (52% vs 27%; p=0.003; OR: 2.88; CI: 1.41 to 5.89) and GSTT1 null genotype (87% vs 65%; p=0.003; OR: 3.66; CI 1.51 to 8.84) associated with colon samples. These findings suggest a positive association between most of common polymorphisms involved on oxidative stress regulation and SCA prevalence. Dysregulation of MNSOD, SOD3, GSTP1, GSTT1 and GSTM1 genes could be associated with an increase of ROS in colon and rectum tissue and p53 pathway deregulation, induced by oxidative stress on colonic and rectal cells. The present study also provides preliminary evidence that MNSOD 175C, SOD3 213G, GSTP1 105G, GSTP1 114T and GSTT1 null polymorphisms, may be involved in SCA risk and could be useful to clarify this multifactorial disorder.

A Miocardiopatia Takotsubo (MT) ocorre maioritariamente em doentes idosos do género feminino, com associação causal a fatores de stress emocional ou físico. O stress poderá provocar elevações nos níveis de catecolaminas e hiperexpressividade do sistema nervoso simpático, resultando num quadro semelhante a stunning miocárdico neurogénico, onde ocorre “balonamento” dos segmentos meso‐apicais do ventrículo esquerdo (VE). Este traduz‐se em alterações da cinética das paredes do VE e é identificado por ecocardiografia ou ventriculografia. A coronariografia, tipicamente, revela ausência de estenose superior a 50%, oclusões do lúmen ou rutura de placa, mas a apresentação clínica na fase aguda é sugestiva de Síndrome Coronário Agudo (SCA) e o eletrocardiograma (ECG) apresenta alterações sugestivas de Enfarte Agudo do Miocárdio (EAM) anterior. Os achados mais comuns são o supradesnivelamento do segmento ST e inversão da onda T nas derivações pré‐cordiais. Alterações de repolarização nas derivações inferiores ou laterais, ausência de alterações eletrocardiográficas, bloqueio de ramo de novo, taquicardia ventricular (TV) ou fibrilhação ventricular (FV) podem ocorrer, ainda que com menor frequência. O supradesnivelamento do segmento ST reverte ao fim de poucos dias, mas persistem ondas T negativas e um prolongamento do intervalo QT com duração que pode ir até quatro meses. Este prolongamento do intervalo QT indicia um maior risco de disritmias ventriculares malignas em doentes com vulnerabilidade por QT longo prévio. Assim, o ECG tem utilidade limitada no diagnóstico da MT, mas permite avaliar a sua evolução e identificar os doentes em risco de desenvolver arritmias malignas

La rápida restauración del flujo coronario es un importante factor determinante de la supervivencia en los pacientes con síndrome coronario agudo con elevación del ST. Esto puede lograrse vía farmacológica (fibrinólisis) o mecánica: intervención coronaria percutánea primaria (ICP); se sugiere la utilización de fármacos fibrinolìticos cuando no se dispone de angioplastia en el centro de atención. Objetivo: conocer los resultados del uso de las distintas modalidades de terapia de reperfusión en los pacientes con síndrome coronario agudo con elevación del segmento ST que consultan al Hospital Nacional Rosales. Materiales y métodos: se realizó un estudio descriptivo, longitudinal, retrospectivo de base documental (expedientes clínicos); donde se evaluó el tipo de terapia de reperfusión coronaria utilizada y la evolución clínica en pacientes que consultaron con infarto agudo al miocardio con elevación del ST (IAMST). Resultados: se incluyeron 128 pacientes. El 64.8% recibió terapia de reperfusión. La fibrinólisis con estreptoquinasa fue la modalidad de reperfusión más utilizada, y cuya efectividad se observó según criterios clínicos y electrocardiográficos en el 55.8%. La Intervención coronaria percutánea primaria (ICP) de rescate se realizó en 7 pacientes. Se encontró una mortalidad global del 20.31% y una tasa de reingreso del 25%. Conclusión: en el Hospital Nacional Rosales el manejo del SCA con elevación del ST no es adecuado en el 100% de los pacientes.

Lipids can modulate the risk of developing sporadic colorectal adenocarcinoma (SCA), since alterations into lipid metabolism and transport pathways influence directly cholesterol and lipids absorption by colonic cells and indirectly reactive oxygen species (ROS) synthesis in rectum cells due to lipid accumulation. Lipid metabolism is regulated by several proteins APOA1, APOB, APOC3, APOE, CETP, NPY, PON1 and PPARG that could influence both metabolism and transport processes. Is been reported that several common single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in these genes could influence their function and/or expression, changing lipid metabolism balance. Thus, genetic changes in those genes can influence SCA development, once the majority of them were never studied in this disease. Furthermore, there are contradictory results between some studied polymorphisms and SCA risk. Thus, the aim of this study was to explore and describe lipid metabolism-associated genes common polymorphisms (APOA1 -75 G>A; APOB R3500Q; APOC3 C3175G, APOC3 T3206G; APOE Cys112/158Arg; CETP G279A, CETP R451Q; NPY Leu7Pro; PON1 Q192R; PPARG Pro12Ala) status among SCA, and their relationship with SCA risk. Genotyping of common lipid metabolism genes polymorphisms (APOA1 75 G>A; APOB R3500Q; APOC3 C3175G, APOC3 T3206G; APOE Cys112/158Arg; CETP G279A, CETP R451Q; NPY Leu7Pro; PON1 Q192R; PPARG Pro12Ala) were done by PCR-SSP techniques, from formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded biopsies of 100 healthy individuals and 68 SCA subjects. Mutant genotypes of APOA1 -75AA (32% vs 12%; p=0.001; OR=3.51; 95% CI 1.59-7.72); APOB 3500AA (7% vs 0%; p=0.01); APOC3 3175GG (19% vs 2%; p=0.0002; OR=11.58; 95% CI 2.52-53.22), APOC3 3206GG (19% vs 0%; p<0.0001); CETP 279AA (12% vs 1%; p=0.003; OR=13.20; 95% CI 1.61-108.17), CETP 451AA (16% vs 0%; p<0.0001); NPY 7CC (15% vs 0%; p<0.0001); PPARG 12GG (10% vs 0%; p=0.001); and heterozygote genotype PON1 192AG (56% vs 22%; p<0.0001; OR=4.49; 95% CI 2.298.80) were found associated with SCA prevalence. While, APOE E4/E4 (0% vs 8%; p=0.02) mutant haplotype seemed to have a protective effect on SCA. Moreover, it also been founded differences between APOB 3500GA, APOC3 3206TG, CETP 279AA genotypes and PPARG 12Ala allele prevalence and tissue localization (colon vs rectum). These findings suggest a positive association between most of common lipid metabolism genes polymorphisms studied and SCA prevalence. Dysregulation of APOA1, APOB, APOC3, CETP, NPY, PON1 and PPARG genes could be associated with lower cholesterol plasma levels and increase ROS among colon and rectum mucosa. Furthermore, these results also support the hypothesis that CRC is related with intestinal lipid absorption decrease and secondary bile acids production increase. Moreover, the polymorphisms studied may play an important role as biomarkers to SCA susceptibility.

Although hydrothermal carbonization of biomass components is known to be mainly governed by reaction temperature, consistent reports on the effect and statistical significance of process conditions on hydrochar properties are still lacking. The objective of this research was to determine the importance and significance of reaction temperature, retention time and solid load on the properties of hydrochar produced from an industrial lignocellulosic sludge residue. According to the results, reaction temperature and retention time had a statistically significant effect on hydrochar ash content, solid yield, carbon content, O/C-ratio, energy densification and energy yield as reactor solid load was statistically insignificant for all acquired models within the design range. Although statistically significant, the effect of retention time was 3–7 times lower than that of reaction temperature. Predicted dry ash-free solid yields of attained hydrochar decreased to approximately 40% due to the dissolution of biomass components at higher reaction temperatures, as respective oxygen contents were comparable to subbituminous coal. Significant increases in the carbon contents of hydrochar led to predicted energy densification ratios of 1–1.5 with respective energy yields of 60–100%. Estimated theoretical energy requirements of carbonization were dependent on the literature method used and mainly controlled by reaction temperature and reactor solid load. The attained results enable future prediction of hydrochar properties from this feedstock and help to understand the effect of process conditions on hydrothermal treatment of lignocellulosic biomass.

Nurses in the intervention group wore different color labeled aprons (smocks) indicating their role assignment (medications, ventilation, compression, defibrillation, etc) on the code team during CPR. Findings indicated that the intervention using color-labeled smocks for pre-assigned roles had a significant effect on the time nurses started compressions (t=3.03, p=0.005), ventilations (t=2.86, p=0.004) and defibrillations (t=2.00, p=.05) when compared to the controls using the standard of care. In performing technical skills, nurses in the intervention groups performed compressions and ventilations significantly better than those in the control groups. The control groups made significantly (t=-2.61, p=0.013) more total errors (7.55 SD 1.54) than the intervention group (5.60, SD 1.90). There were no significant differences in team performance measures between the groups. Study findings indicate use of colored labeled smocks during CPR emergencies resulted in: shorter times to start emergency CPR; reduced errors; more technical skills completed successfully; and no differences in team performance.
