Mortality by Heart Failure and Ischemic Heart Disease in Brazil from 1996 to 2011

Background:Circulatory system diseases are the first cause of death in Brazil.Objective:To analyze the evolution of mortality caused by heart failure, by ischemic heart diseases and by ill-defined causes, as well as their possible relations, in Brazil and in the geoeconomic regions of the country (North, Northeast, Center-West, South and Southeast), from 1996 to 2011.Methods:Data were obtained from DATASUS and death declaration records with codes I20 and I24 for acute ischemic diseases, I25 for chronic ischemic diseases, and I50 for heart failure, and codes in chapter XIII for ill-defined causes, according to geoeconomic regions of Brazil, from 1996 to 2011.Results:Mortality rates due to heart failure declined in Brazil and its regions, except for the North and the Northeast. Mortality rates due to acute ischemic heart diseases increased in the North and Northeast regions, especially from 2005 on; they remained stable in the Center-West region; and decreased in the South and in the Southeast. Mortality due to chronic ischemic heart diseases decreased in Brazil and in the Center-West, South and Southeast regions, and had little variation in the North and in the Northeast. The highest mortality rates due to ill-defined causes occurred in the Northeast until 2005.Conclusions:Mortality due to heart failure is decreasing in Brazil and in all of its geoeconomic regions. The temporal evolution of mortality caused by ischemic heart diseases was similar to that of heart failure. The decreasing number of deaths due to ill-defined causes may represent the improvement in the quality of information about mortality in Brazil. The evolution of acute ischemic heart diseases ranged according to regions, being possibly confused with the differential evolution of ill-defined causes.

"Propheten" und "Humanisten" : Sciences Humaines-Konjunktur und intellektuelles Feld in Frankreich (1960-1980) in der struktural-pragmatischen Diskursanalyse

In den 1960er und 1970er Jahren durchläuft das intellektuelle Feld in Frankreich einen grundlegenden Wandel, der eine Reihe von sich rasch abwechselnden Theorien und Tendenzen nachsichzieht. Der hegemoniale Erfolg von "Meisterdenkern" wie Lacan, Althusser und Foucault kann auf eine Verbindung verschiedener Faktoren zurückgeführt werden: die schnelle Ausweitung des akademischen Felds, die Krise des freischaffenden Künstlers und Privatgelehrten und die zunehmende Rolle gewisser "peripherer Institutionen" (ENS, EHESS, Collège de France). Um einen gegebenen Diskurs nicht auf eine vorgegebene Realität zu reduzieren, zielt diese Dissertation auf eine Öffnung der Bourdieu'schen Feldtheorie für eine struktural-pragmatische Diskurstheorie, die die Kontingenz der Artikulation von Struktur und diskursivem Geschehnis betont. Die Analyse von Werken und Karrieren bestimmter Produzenten (wie Derrida, Barthes, Tel Quel) wird zeigen, wie die Produzenten intellektuelle Hegemonien artikulieren und sich gegen ihre Konkurrenten positionieren.

Fórmulas diretas de Ansheles

As "fórmulas diretas" do Professor Ansheles, cristalografista russo, são publicadas, sem dedução, na Cristalografia de BOLDYREV (1934), tradução para o espanhol de Candel Vila. No presente trabalho o autor deduz tais fórmulas, utilizando a projeção estereográfica.

Sombreamento dos cafèzais II: resultados do 4.° biênio (1959/1960)

This paper deals with data obtained in 1959 and 1960 in shaded and unshaded coffee plots at Piracicaba, São Paulo, Brazil. The results can be summarized as follows: a) the production, in shaded and unshaded plots, did not show differences statisticaly significant; b) the percentage of coffee berry borer infestation was higher in shaded plots as compared with unshaded ones; c) the percentage of green, ripened and dry fruits depends of the year and of the harvest time. In the same harvest time, both for shaded and for unshaded plots the percentages in the shaded plots were higher for green fruits and lesser for ripened and dry fruits; d) coffee fruits brought from the field in the harvest time yielding up in unshaded plots as compared with shaded ones; e) the relation grains/dry fruits was better in shaded plots.

Avaliação do período de florescimento das plantas apícolas no ano de 1960, através do polem contido nos méis e dos coletados pelas abelhas (Apis Mellifera L.)

Neste trabalho apresentamos os resultados da análise polínica de 11 amostras de mel e de polem coletados pelas abelhas Apis mellifera L., durante o período de março de 1960, no Apiário da Escola Superior de Agricultura "Luiz de Queiroz". Através dessa análise, pudemos comprovar e identificar como plantas nectaríferas e poliníferas as seguintes espécies: Eucalyptus sp., Dombeya sp., Agave sisalana, Vernonia sp., Montanoa bipinnatificada, Persea americana, Baccharis sp.. Citrus sp., e como plantas poliníferas as que seguem: Bidens piíosus, Cosmus sulphureus, Pirostegia venusta, Mel-linis minutiflora. Pudemos, assim, avaliar de modo indireto o período de florescimento das plantas apícolas nos arredores do apiário da Escola e comparar essa avaliação com as observações diretas de KERR & AMARAL (196°) sobre o período de florescimentos das plantas apícolas no planalto Paulista. Daí podermos afirmar ser a análise polínica dos méis e a análise dos polens coletados pelas abelhas um método prático de valor para estudos de fenologia das plantas apícolas. Poderemos assim aplicar a análise polínica em nossos futuros estudos sobre a fenologia das plantas apícolas em diferentes regiões do Estado de São Paulo.

Modeling usage of medical care services: the medical expenditure panel survey data, 1996-2000

We explore the determinants of usage of six different types of health care services, using the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey data, years 1996-2000. We apply a number of models for univariate count data, including semiparametric, semi-nonparametric and finite mixture models. We find that the complexity of the model that is required to fit the data well depends upon the way in which the data is pooled across sexes and over time, and upon the characteristics of the usage measure. Pooling across time and sexes is almost always favored, but when more heterogeneous data is pooled it is often the case that a more complex statistical model is required.

Corrigendum to "On randomized matching mechanisms" [Economic Theory 8(1996)377-381]

Ma (1996) studied the random order mechanism, a matching mechanism suggested by Roth and Vande Vate (1990) for marriage markets. By means of an example he showed that the random order mechanism does not always reach all stable matchings. Although Ma's (1996) result is true, we show that the probability distribution he presented - and therefore the proof of his Claim 2 - is not correct. The mistake in the calculations by Ma (1996) is due to the fact that even though the example looks very symmetric, some of the calculations are not as ''symmetric.''

Capital humano y desigualdad en España: 1985-1996

En el período 1985-1996 la desigualdad de la renta en España se redujo de forma notable, en claro contraste con lo sucedido en otros países avanzados. En este trabajo se profundiza en el impacto que sobre esta reducción en la desigualdad ha ejercido la redistribución del stock de capital humano, uno de los factores que aparecen como más relevantes para explicar tanto la distribución de la renta como sus modificaciones. Las conclusiones obtenidas sugieren que aproximadamente un tercio de la reducción en la desigualdad que se ha producido entre los dos años extremos contemplados (1985 frente a 1996) se debe al comportamiento del capital humano. Otros factores tales como el tamaño de la familia o la participación de ambos cónyuges en el mercado de trabajo, han actuado en el mismo sentido. Finalmente, un elevado porcentaje de mejora en la distribución permanece por explicar y deberá ser objeto de investigaciones futuras.

Descentralización del empleo: ¿compactación policéntrica o dispersión? El caso de la región metropolitana de Barcelona 1986-1996

La Región Metropolitana de Barcelona (RMB) ha sido caracterizada en repetidas ocasiones como un sistema urbano de tipo policéntrico. Este trabajo pretende corroborar esta afirmación haciendo uso de una metodología que permite identificar los subcentros de empleo y valorar el grado de policentrismo de la RMB en 1986 y 1996. Los resultados obtenidos en los dos años confirman la existencia y extensión del policentrismo.
