Three new copper-azido complexes Cu-4(N-3)(8)(L-1)(2)](n) (1), Cu-4(N-3)(6)(L-2)(2)(H2O)(2)] (2), and Cu-4(N-3)(6)(L-3)(2)](n) (3) L-1 is the imine resulting from the condensation of pyridine-2-carboxaldehyde with N-methylethylenediamine, HL2 and HL3 are the condensation products of 2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde with N,N-diethylethylenediamine and N-ethylethylenediamine respectively] have been synthesized by using 0.5 molar equivalents of the Schiff base ligands with Cu(NO3)(2)center dot 3H(2)O and an excess of NaN3. Single crystal X-ray structures show that the basic unit of these complexes contains very similar Cu-4(II) building blocks. While 1 and 3 have overall 1D structures, 2 forms discrete tetranuclear clusters due to blocking of two coordination sites on the tetranuclear cluster by water molecules. Magnetic susceptibility measurements over a wide range of temperatures exhibit the presence of both antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic exchanges within the tetranuclear unit structures. Density functional theory calculations (using B3LYP functional and two different basis sets) have been performed on the complexes 1-3 to provide a qualitative theoretical interpretation of their overall magnetic behavior.

Three pi-electron rich fluorescent supramolecular polymers (1-3) have been synthesized incorporating 2-methyl-3-butyn-2-ol groups in reasonable yield by employing Sonagashira coupling. They were characterized by multinuclear NMR (H-1, C-13), ESI-MS and single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses 1 = 1( 2-methyl-3-butyn-2-ol) pyrene; 2 = 9,10-bis(2-methyl-3-butyn-2-ol) anthracene; 3 = 1,3,6,8-tetrakis(2methyl- 3-butyn-2-ol) pyrene]. Single crystal structures of 1-3 indicated that the incorporation of hydroxy (-OH) groups on the peripheral of the fluorophores helps them to self-associate into an infinite supramolecular polymeric network via intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions between the adjacent discrete fluorophore units. All these compounds showed fluorescence characteristics in chloroform solution due to the extended pi-conjugation and were used as selective fluorescent sensors for the detection of electron deficient nitroaromatics. The changes in photophysical properties of fluorophores (1-3) upon complex formation with electron deficient nitroaromatic explosives were studied in chloroform solution by using fluorescence spectroscopy. All these fluorophores showed the largest quenching response with moderate selectivity for nitroaromatics over various other electron deficient/ rich aromatic compounds tested (Chart 1). Analysis of the fluorescence titration profile of 9,10-bis(2-methyl-3butyn- 2-ol) anthracene fluorophore (2) with 1,3,5-trinitrotoluene/ 2,4-dinitrotoluene provided evidence that this particular fluorophore detects nitroaromatics in the nanomolar range 2.0 ppb for TNT, 13.7 ppb for DNT]. Moreover, sharp visual color change was observed upon mixing nitroaromatic (DNT) with fluorophores (1-3) both in solution as well as in solid phase. Furthermore, the vapor-phase sensing study of thin film of fluorophores (1-3) showed efficient quenching responses for DNT and this sensing process is reproducible. Selective fluorescence quenching response including a sharp visual color change for nitroaromatics make these tested fluorophores (1-3) as potential sensors for nitroaromatic compounds with a detection limit of ppb level.

In this paper we discuss a novel procedure for constructing clusters of bound particles in the case of a quantum integrable derivative delta-function Bose gas in one dimension. It is shown that clusters of bound particles can be constructed for this Bose gas for some special values of the coupling constant, by taking the quasi-momenta associated with the corresponding Bethe state to be equidistant points on a single circle in the complex momentum plane. We also establish a connection between these special values of the coupling constant and some fractions belonging to the Farey sequences in number theory. This connection leads to a classification of the clusters of bound particles associated with the derivative delta-function Bose gas and allows us to study various properties of these clusters like their size and their stability under the variation of the coupling constant. We show that the third order optical nonlinearity of 15-atom gold clusters is significantly enhanced when in contact with indium tin oxide (ITO) conducting film. Open and close aperture z-scan experiments together with non-degenerate pump-probe differential transmission experiments were done using 80 fs laser pulses centered at 395 nm and 790 nm on gold clusters encased inside cyclodextrin cavities. We show that two photon absorption coefficient is enhanced by an order of magnitude as compared to that when the clusters are on pristine glass plate. The enhancement for the nonlinear optical refraction coefficient is similar to 3 times. The photo-induced excited state absorption using pump-probe experiments at pump wavelength of 395 nm and probe at 790 nm also show an enhancement by an order of magnitude. These results attributed to the excited state energy transfer in the coupled gold cluster-ITO system are different from the enhancement seen so far in charge donor-acceptor complexes and nanoparticle-conjugate polymer composites.

Microstructural changes resulting from isothermal decomposition of the beta-phase have been studied in Cu-rich binary Cu-Al and ternary Cu-Al-Sn alloys containing up to 3 at.% Sn at temperatures from 873 to 673 K. Results are presented as TTT diagrams. The decomposition occurs in several stages, each of which involves the establishment of metastable equilibrium between beta and one or more of the product phases alpha, beta(1) and gamma(2). Addition of Sn has been shown to increase the stability of the ordered beta(1)-phase in relation to beta. In alloys containing more than 2 at.% Sn, the beta(1) emerges as a stable phase. At low Sn concentrations beta(1) is metastable. An important new finding is the existence of three-phase equilibrium microstructure containing alpha, beta(1) and gamma(2). Increasing addition of Sn alters the morphology of beta(1) from rosettes to dendrites and finally to Widmanstatten needles.

Microstructural changes of Ni-rich NiTi shape memory alloy during thermal and thermo-mechanical cycling have been investigated using Electron Back Scattered Diffraction. A strong dependence of the orientation of the prior austenite grain on the misorientation development has been observed during thermal cycling and thermo-mechanical cycling. This effect is more pronounced at the grain boundaries compared to grain interior. At a larger applied strain, the volume fraction of stabilized martensite phase increases with increase in the number of cycling. Deformation within the martensite leads to stabilization of martensitic phase even at temperatures slightly above the austenite finish temperature. Modulus variation with respect to temperature has been explained on the basis of martensitic transformation.

Ag-Ni films were electrodeposited over a Cu substrate. Structural characterization revealed a fibrous microstructure with an amorphous structure for the as-deposited film. Isothermal annealing at 400 degrees C of the film inside transmission electron microscope led to amorphous-to-crystalline transition along with the evolution of nano-sized particles in the microstructure. The crystalline phase was Ni-Ag solid solution. The relative volume fraction of the nano-sized particles increased gradually with time. There was however no detectable decomposition of solid solution phase till about 4 h of annealing. Beyond 4 h phase separation initiated and pure Ag and Ni phases formed in the film. This study provides a methodology by which microstructural engineering of as-electrodeposited amorphous Ag-Ni films can be conducted to isolate a particular microstructure in order to tap specific potentially usable functionalities. Present work provides an electrodeposition based methodology for synthesizing Ni-rich, Ag-Ni nanowires using an alumina template. Ag-Ni system shows negligible solid solubility in the bulk. Detailed structural and compositional characterization of as-synthesized nanowires using transmission electron microscopy technique revealed a two phase microstructure. Regions along and near the nanowire axis contained crystalline Ag-Ni solid solution phase with Ag-rich composition. Whereas, regions away from the axis and near the nanowire boundary predominantly contained nanocrystalline Ni-rich, Ni-Ag solid solution phase. (C) 2013 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

We describe the synthesis and crystal structure of Li3MRuO5 (M = Co and Ni), new rock salt related oxides. Both the oxides crystallize in the layered LiCoO2 (alpha-NaFeO2) structure, as revealed by powder XRD data. Magnetic susceptibility data suggest that the oxidation states of transition metals are Li3Co3+(ls)Ru4+(ls) O-5 (ls = low spin) for the M = Co compound and Li3Ni2+Ru5+O5 for the M = Ni compound. Electrochemical investigations of lithium deintercalation-intercalation behaviour reveal that both Co and Ni phases exhibit attractive specific capacities of ca. 200 mA h g(-1) at an average voltage of 4 V that has been interpreted as due to the oxidation of Co3+ and Ru4+ in Li3CoRuO5 and Ni2+ to Ni4+ in the case of Li3NiRuO5. Thus, a different role of Ru ions is played in the isostructural oxides. Finally, in both cases evidence of irreversible behaviour above 4.2 V is observed and interpreted as formation of high valent ions or alternatively oxidation of oxide ions.

Rapid advancements in multi-core processor architectures coupled with low-cost, low-latency, high-bandwidth interconnects have made clusters of multi-core machines a common computing resource. Unfortunately, writing good parallel programs that efficiently utilize all the resources in such a cluster is still a major challenge. Various programming languages have been proposed as a solution to this problem, but are yet to be adopted widely to run performance-critical code mainly due to the relatively immature software framework and the effort involved in re-writing existing code in the new language. In this paper, we motivate and describe our initial study in exploring CUDA as a programming language for a cluster of multi-cores. We develop CUDA-For-Clusters (CFC), a framework that transparently orchestrates execution of CUDA kernels on a cluster of multi-core machines. The well-structured nature of a CUDA kernel, the growing popularity, support and stability of the CUDA software stack collectively make CUDA a good candidate to be considered as a programming language for a cluster. CFC uses a mixture of source-to-source compiler transformations, a work distribution runtime and a light-weight software distributed shared memory to manage parallel executions. Initial results on running several standard CUDA benchmark programs achieve impressive speedups of up to 7.5X on a cluster with 8 nodes, thereby opening up an interesting direction of research for further investigation.

An industrial waste liquor having high sulfate concentrations was subjected to biological treatment using the sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) Desulfovibrio desulfuricans. Toxicity levels of different sulfate, cobalt and nickel concentrations toward growth of the SRB with respect to biological sulfate reduction kinetics was initially established. Optimum sulfate concentration to promote SRB growth amounted to 0.8 - 1 g/L. The strain of D. desulfuricans used in this study initially tolerated up to 4 -5 g/L of sulfate or 50 mg/L of cobalt and nickel, while its tolerance could be further enhanced through adaptation by serial subculturing in the presence of increasing concentrations of sulfate, cobalt and nickel. From the waste liquor, more than 70% of sulfate and 95% of cobalt and nickel could be precipitated as sulfides, using a preadapted strain of D. desulfuricans. Probable mechanisms involving biological sulfide precipitation and metal adsorption onto precipitates and bacterial cells are discussed.

It is a tough task to distinguish a short-range ferromagnetically correlated cluster-glass phase from a canonical spin-glass-like phase in many magnetic oxide systems using conventional magnetometry measurements. As a case study, we investigate the magnetic ground state of La0.85Sr0.15CoO3, which is often debated based on phase separation issues. We report the results of two samples of La0.85Sr0.15CoO3 (S-1 and S-2) prepared under different conditions. Neutron depolarization, higher harmonic ac susceptibility and magnetic relaxation studies were carried out along with conventional magnetometry measurements to differentiate subtle changes at the microscopic level. There is no evidence of ferromagnetic correlation in the sample S-2 attributed to a spin-glass phase, and this is compounded by the lack of existence of a second order component of higher harmonic ac susceptibility and neutron depolarization. A magnetic relaxation experiment at different temperatures complements the spin glass characteristic in S-2. All these signal a sharp variance when we consider the cluster-glass-like phase (phase separated) in S-1, especially when prepared from an improper chemical synthesis process. This shows that the nonlinear ac susceptibility is a viable tool to detect ferromagnetic clusters such as those the neutron depolarization study can reveal.

One-pot synthesis of amorphous iron oxide nanoparticles with two different dimensions (<5 nm and 60 nm) has been achieved using the reverse micelle method, with <5 nm nanoparticles separated from the stable colloid by exploiting their magnetic behaviour. The transformation of the as-prepared amorphous powders into Fe3O4 and Fe2O3 phases (gamma and alpha) is achieved by carrying out controlled annealing at elevated temperatures under different optimized conditions. The as-prepared samples resulting from micellar synthesis and the corresponding annealed ones are thoroughly characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and by Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies. Expectedly, the magnetic characteristics of Fe3O4 and Fe2O3 phase (gamma and alpha) nanoparticles are found to have strong dependence on their phase, dimension, and morphology. The coercivity of Fe3O4 and Fe2O3 (gamma and alpha) nanoparticles is reasonably high, even though high resolution TEM studies bring out that these nanoparticles are single crystalline. This is in contrast with previous reports wherein poly-crystallinity of iron oxides nanoparticles has been regarded as a prerequisite for high coercivity.

The paper focuses on the use of oxygen and steam as the gasification agents in the thermochemical conversion of biomass to produce hydrogen rich syngas, using a downdraft reactor configuration. Performance of the reactor is evaluated for different equivalence ratios (ER), steam to biomass ratios (SBR) and moisture content in the fuel. The results are compared and evaluated with chemical equilibrium analysis and reaction kinetics along with the results available in the literature. Parametric study suggests that, with increase in SBR, hydrogen fraction in the syngas increases but necessitates an increase in the ER to maintain reactor temperature toward stable operating conditions. SBR is varied from 0.75 to 2.7 and ER from 0.18 to 0.3. The peak hydrogen yield is found to be 104g/kg of biomass at SBR of 2.7. Further, significant enhancement in H-2 yield and H-2 to CO ratio is observed at higher SBR (SBR=1.5-2.7) compared with lower range SBR (SBR=0.75-1.5). Experiments were conducted using wet wood chips to induce moisture into the reacting system and compare the performance with dry wood with steam. The results clearly indicate the both hydrogen generation and the gasification efficiency ((g)) are better in the latter case. With the increase in SBR, gasification efficiency ((g)) and lower heating value (LHV) tend to reduce. Gasification efficiency of 85.8% is reported with LHV of 8.9MJNm(-3) at SBR of 0.75 compared with 69.5% efficiency at SBR of 2.5 and lower LHV of 7.4 at MJNm(-3) at SBR of 2.7. These are argued on the basis of the energy required for steam generation and the extent of steam consumption during the reaction, which translates subsequently in the LHV of syngas. From the analysis of the results, it is evident that reaction kinetics plays a crucial role in the conversion process. The study also presents the importance of reaction kinetics, which controls the overall performance related to efficiency, H-2 yield, H-2 to CO fraction and LHV of syngas, and their dependence on the process parameters SBR and ER.
