For creep solids obeying the power law under tension proposed by Tabor, namely sigma = b(epsilon) over dot(m), it has been established through dimensional analysis that for self-similar indenters the load F versus indentation depth h can be expressed as F(t) = bh(2)(t)[(h) over dot(t)/h(t)](m)Pi(alpha) where the dimensionless factor Pi(alpha) depends on material parameters such as m and the indenter geometry. In this article, we show that by generalizing the Tabor power law to the general three dimensional case on the basis of isotropy, this factor can be calculated so that indentation test can be used to determine the material parameters b and m appearing in the original power law. Hence indentation test can replace tension test. This could be a distinct advantage for materials that come in the form of thin films, coatings or otherwise available only in small amounts. To facilitate application values of this constant are given in tabulated form for a range of material parameters. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A new methodology is proposed in this paper to predict the lowest power consumption for a double-tube-socket (DTS) pneumatic conveying system. This methodology is established on both experimental work and numerical simulation. After parametric studies by numerical simulation, the desired conveying cases which have the lowest power consumption were obtained. Finally those cases were carried out in our experimental system. The measured power consumption was close to that predicted. In this paper the experimental work is discussed and the numerical simulation introduced. (c) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The triblock copolymers, poly(styrene-b-isoprene-b-epsilon-caprolactone)s (PS-b-PI-b-PCL) have been synthesized successfully by combination of anionic polymerization and ring-opening polymerization. Diblock copolymer capped with hydroxyl group, PS-b-PI-OH was synthesized by sequential- anionic polymerization of styrene and isoprene and following end-capping reaction of EO, and then it was used as macro initiator in the ring-opening polymerization of CL. The results of DSC and WAXD show big effect of amorphous PS-b-PI on the thermal behaviors of PCL block in the triblock copolymers and the lower degree of crystalline in the triblock copolymer with higher molecular weight of PS-b-PI was observed. The real-time observation on the polarized optical microscopy shows the spherulite growth rates of PCL27, PCL328 and PS-b-PI-b-PCL344 are 0.71, 0.46 and 0.07 mu m s(-1), respectively. The atomic force microscopy (AFM) images of the PS90-b-PI66-b-PCL-(28) show the columns morphology formed by it's self-assembling.

In this paper, the fabrication method of a new type of carbon monoxide gas sensor based on SnOx with low power consumption and its sensing characteristics have been reported. The electric conductance of this type of sensor evolves oscillation form regularly when the sensor is exposed to low level of CO gas. The oscillation amplitude is directly proportional to the concentration of CO gas over a wide range. The effects of relevant factors. such as. humidity, temperature and interference gases on the sensor properties were examined. The sensing oscillation response mechanism was also discussed.

The dielectric response of graded composites having general power-law-graded cylindrical inclusions under a uniform applied electric field is investigated. The dielectric profile of the cylindrical inclusions is modeled by the equation epsilon(i)(r)=c(b+r)(k) (where r is the radius of the cylindrical inclusions and c, b and k are parameters). Analytical solutions for the local electrical potentials are derived in terms of hypergeometric functions and the effective dielectric response of the graded composites is predicted in the dilute limit. Moreover, for a simple power-law dielectric profile epsilon(i)(r) = cr(k) and a linear dielectric profile epsilon(i)(r) = c(b + r), analytical expressions of the electrical potentials and the effective dielectric response are derived exactly from our results by taking the limits b -> 0 and k -> 1, respectively. For a higher concentration of inclusions, the effective dielectric response is estimated by an effective-medium approximation. In addition, we have discussed the effective response of graded cylindrical composites with a more complex dielectric profile of inclusion, epsilon(i)(r)=c(b+r)(k)e(beta r). The effective dielectric response of graded spherical composites having general power-law gradient inclusions is investigated under a uniform applied electric field, where the dielectric gradation profile of the spherical inclusions is modeled by the equation epsilon(i) (r) = c(b+r)(k). Analytical solutions of the local electrical potentials are derived in terms of hyper-geometric function and the effective dielectric response of the graded composites is predicted in the dilute limit. From our result, the local potentials of graded spherical composites having both simple power-law dielectric profile epsilon(i)(r) = cr(k) and linear dielectric profile epsilon(i) (r) = c(b+r) are derived exactly by taking the limits b --> 0 and k --> 1, respectively. In the dilute limit, our exact result is used to test the validity of differential effective dipole approximation (DEDA) for estimating the effective response of graded spherical composites, and it is shown that the DEDA is in excellent agreement with exact result. A methodology for improved power controller switching in mobile Body Area Networks operating within the ambient healthcare environment is proposed. The work extends Anti-windup and Bumpless transfer results to provide a solution to the ambulatory networking problem that ensures sufficient biometric data can always be regenerated at the base station. The solution thereby guarantees satisfactory quality of service for healthcare providers. Compensation is provided for the nonlinear hardware constraints that are a typical feature of the type of network under consideration and graceful performance degradation in the face of hardware output power saturation is demonstrated, thus conserving network energy in an optimal fashion.

This thesis is focused on the investigation of magnetic materials for high-power dcdc converters in hybrid and fuel cell vehicles and the development of an optimized high-power inductor for a multi-phase converter. The thesis introduces the power system architectures for hybrid and fuel cell vehicles. The requirements for power electronic converters are established and the dc-dc converter topologies of interest are introduced. A compact and efficient inductor is critical to reduce the overall cost, weight and volume of the dc-dc converter and optimize vehicle driving range and traction power. Firstly, materials suitable for a gapped CC-core inductor are analyzed and investigated. A novel inductor-design algorithm is developed and automated in order to compare and contrast the various magnetic materials over a range of frequencies and ripple ratios. The algorithm is developed for foil-wound inductors with gapped CC-cores in the low (10 kHz) to medium (30 kHz) frequency range and investigates the materials in a natural-convection-cooled environment. The practical effects of frequency, ripple, air-gap fringing, and thermal configuration are investigated next for the iron-based amorphous metal and 6.5 % silicon steel materials. A 2.5 kW converter is built to verify the optimum material selection and thermal configuration over the frequency range and ripple ratios of interest. Inductor size can increase in both of these laminated materials due to increased airgap fringing losses. Distributing the airgap is demonstrated to reduce the inductor losses and size but has practical limitations for iron-based amorphous metal cores. The effects of the manufacturing process are shown to degrade the iron-based amorphous metal multi-cut core loss. The experimental results also suggest that gap loss is not a significant consideration in these experiments. The predicted losses by the equation developed by Reuben Lee and cited by Colonel McLyman are significantly higher than the experimental results suggest. Iron-based amorphous metal has better preformance than 6.5 % silicon steel when a single cut core and natural-convection-cooling are used. Conduction cooling, rather than natural convection, can result in the highest power density inductor. The cooling for these laminated materials is very dependent on the direction of the lamination and the component mounting. Experimental results are produced showing the effects of lamination direction on the cooling path. A significant temperature reduction is demonstrated for conduction cooling versus natural-convection cooling. Iron-based amorphous metal and 6.5% silicon steel are competitive materials when conduction cooled. A novel inductor design algorithm is developed for foil-wound inductors with gapped CC-cores for conduction cooling of core and copper. Again, conduction cooling, rather than natural convection, is shown to reduce the size and weight of the inductor. The weight of the 6.5 % silicon steel inductor is reduced by around a factor of ten compared to natural-convection cooling due to the high thermal conductivity of the material. The conduction cooling algorithm is used to develop high-power custom inductors for use in a high power multi-phase boost converter. Finally, a high power digitally-controlled multi-phase boost converter system is designed and constructed to test the high-power inductors. The performance of the inductors is compared to the predictions used in the design process and very good correlation is achieved. The thesis results have been documented at IEEE APEC, PESC and IAS conferences in 2007 and at the IEEE EPE conference in 2008.

Existing point estimates of half-life deviations from purchasing power parity (PPP), around 3-5 years, suggest that the speed of convergence is extremely slow. This article assesses the degree of uncertainty around these point estimates by using local-to-unity asymptotic theory to construct confidence intervals that are robust to high persistence in small samples. The empirical evidence suggests that the lower bound of the confidence interval is between four and eight quarters for most currencies, which is not inconsistent with traditional price-stickiness explanations. However, the upper bounds are infinity for all currencies, so we cannot provide conclusive evidence in favor of PPP either. © 2005 American Statistical Association.

Nonradiative coupling between conductive coils is a candidate mechanism for wireless energy transfer applications. In this paper we propose a power relay system based on a near-field metamaterial superlens and present a thorough theoretical analysis of this system. We use time-harmonic circuit formalism to describe all interactions between two coils attached to external circuits and a slab of anisotropic medium with homogeneous permittivity and permeability. The fields of the coils are found in the point-dipole approximation using Sommerfeld integrals which are reduced to standard special functions in the long-wavelength limit. We show that, even with a realistic magnetic loss tangent of order 0.1, the power transfer efficiency with the slab can be an order of magnitude greater than free-space efficiency when the load resistance exceeds a certain threshold value. We also find that the volume occupied by the metamaterial between the coils can be greatly compressed by employing magnetic permeability with a large anisotropy ratio. © 2011 American Physical Society.

We consider the optimum design of pilot-symbol-assisted modulation (PSAM) schemes with feedback. The received signal is periodically fed back to the transmitter through a noiseless delayed link and the time-varying channel is modeled as a Gauss-Markov process. We optimize a lower bound on the channel capacity which incorporates the PSAM parameters and Kalman-based channel estimation and prediction. The parameters available for the capacity optimization are the data power adaptation strategy, pilot spacing and pilot power ratio, subject to an average power constraint. Compared to the optimized open-loop PSAM (i.e., the case where no feedback is provided from the receiver), our results show that even in the presence of feedback delay, the optimized power adaptation provides higher information rates at low signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) in medium-rate fading channels. However, in fast fading channels, even the presence of modest feedback delay dissipates the advantages of power adaptation.
