John Adams Smith letter, Jan. 14, 1813

Transcript: New York Jan. 14. 1813. My dear uncle, I had nearly concluded to have made my [jaunt?] earlier than I had mentioned in my last letter to you, for Swartout had intended to have written by me to Father & yourself; having [Louisa?] concluded not so soon to depart he sends me his letters which I forward in mail, I shall hope to have letters from home soon, it is a great pleasure to hear from any of you. I said last week in Hollands letter mentioning [bladeworth?] account, I have explained to him. It is a mistake about me agreeing to pay Mr. [Dening?] [their?] account. Caroline mentions to me your jaunt to [Sophia?], but I regret our friend there should be unpleasantly situated. I have not yet seen Col. Willett but will see him as mentioned. I have neglected to go there for some time which has been remiss in me. We have nothing new I believe unless it be that Armstrong & Jones of Philadelphia have been nominated as Secretarys of War & the Navy & [cer?] this in all probability may be appointed. There may be room for speculation, but perhaps it is not probable that Canada will be ceded to American Valor in the year 1813. There is a Bill before congress by which it may be made penal to enter on board American vessels, either British subjects or naturalized Americans, which it is presoomed by many will [spon?] the accommodation of Peace – may be yes may be no – the proof of the pudding is in the eating of it. I imagine pacification is not so near at hand although it is much to be desired. Whatever might be for the honor & prosperity of the Country I would strenuously advocate, aloof from partial & party considerations. We have not a word as yet what the Council at Albany may be thinking of as yet. I suppose these things will come in time, perhaps untimely to many. Issue for February 15, 1815: Page 2 has a two-column wide heading regarding the news about the signing of the Treaty of Ghent ending the War of 1812: "PEACE--SAFETY, and Prospect of returning COMMERCE, and PROSPERITY".

Volumes of interest were published between 1812 and 1815 with articles about the War of 1812. Issue for February 22, 1815: includes various articles about the War of 1812 and the end of the war including "British official account--Battle of Chippewa", Page 2 has a bold, two-column wide heading: "Ratified TREATY Of PEACE And AMITY", followed by "A PROCLAMATION" issued by "JAMES MADISON" stating that a treaty with "His Britannic Majesty" was signed at Ghent on December 24, 1814, and ratified by the U.S. Senate on February 17, 1815, thus ending the War of 1812.

Connecticut Mirror, 4 January 1813 (vol. 4, no. 27) - Newspaper

Volumes of interest were published between 1812 and 1815 with articles about the War of 1812. Issue for Jan. 4, 1813 includes (on p. 3) the annual carrier's address to the readers of the newspaper, this one having a war theme since it was published in the midst of the War of 1812. It is titled: "War and Proclamations--Addressed to the Readers of the Connecticut Mirror". Includes war-related content with some items headed: "Generosity of American Tars", "Impressment of Seamen" which is signed in type: James Monroe, "Reward Of Merit", "From Niagara" and a few other items.

Thomas's Massachusetts spy, or, Worcester Gazette, 1 March 1815 (vol. 44, no. 2186) - Newspaper

Volumes of interest were published between 1812 and 1815 with articles about the War of 1812. Issue for Mar. 1, 1815: The front page of this issue has the: "TREATY Of Peace And Amity, Between his Britannick Majesty and the United States of America." Hereafter, and concluding on pg. 2, are the eleven articles of the treaty, signed in type: John Q. Adams, James A. Bayard, Henry Clay, Albert Gallatin, and several others. Page 2 also has the message from the President that he forwarded a copy of the treaty to Congress, signed in type: James Madison.

Weekly Aurora, 21 February 1815 (vol. 5, no. 49) - Newspaper

Volumes of interest were published between 1812 and 1815 with articles about the War of 1812. Issue for Feb. 21, 1815, beginning on page 2 and continuing to take all of page 3 and some of page 4 is the full text headed: "TREATY OF PEACE" which is prefaced with an address by James Madison. Also in this issue is an article: "Victory At Orleans" and another article headed: "The War--From New Orleans".

A Brief Statement of the Transactions and Accounts of Qr. M. Gen. James Thomas, attached to the Army on the Niagara Frontier, in the year 1812-1813 (1815)

A principle cause of the failure of the campaign on the Niagara Frontier in 1812 was the deficiency of subsistence for the troops; as quartermaster general, Thomas received much of the blame. His defense is offered here.

Partial transcription: Buffalo, August 15, 1815 This day settled all accounts between… respecting the purchase and sailing of the Schooner Ranger until she was laid up in the fare of 1811. For the value of the…of the said Schooner destroyed by the enemy in January 1813 and the rigging & c taken by the U.S. Navy Officers for the use of the Government a [Joint][appreciation] is to be made... There is a note in the front cover written to Mary from B. Johnston on April 22, 1942. He refers to page 73 of the book in which William Woodruff is listed as a Lieutenant and Richard Woodruff is listed as an Ensign in the Niagara District.
