The objective of this work was to evaluate the effectiveness of ruzigrass (Urochloaruziziensis) in enhancing soil-P availability in areas fertilized with soluble or reactive rock phosphates. The area had been cropped for five years under no-till, in a system involving soybean, triticale/black-oat, and pearl millet. Previously to the five-year cultivation period, corrective phosphorus fertilization was applied once on soil surface, at 0.0 and 80 kg ha-1 P2O5, as triple superphosphate or Arad rock phosphate. After this five-year period, plots received the same corrective P fertilization as before and ruzigrass was introduced to the cropping system in the stead of the other cover crops. Soil samples were taken (0-10 cm) after ruzigrass cultivation and subjected to soil-P fractionation. Soybean was grown thereafter without P application to seed furrow. Phosphorus availability in plots with ruzigrass was compared to the ones with spontaneous vegetation for two years. Ruzigrass cultivation increased inorganic (resin-extracted) and organic (NaHCO3) soil P, as well as P concentration in soybean leaves, regardless of the P source. However, soybean yield did not increase significantly due to ruzigrass introduction to the cropping system. Soil-P availability did not differ between soluble and reactive P sources. Ruzigrass increases soil-P availability, especially where corrective P fertilization is performed.

Algae bloom is one of the major consequences of the eutrophication of aquatic systems, including algae capable of producing toxic substances. Among these are several species of cyanobacteria, also known as blue-green algae, that have the capacity to adapt themselves to changes in the water column. Thus, the horizontal distribution of cyanobacteria harmful algae blooms (CHABs) is essential, not only to the environment, but also for public health. The use of remote sensing techniques for mapping CHABs has been explored by means of bio-optical modeling of phycocyanin (PC), a unique inland waters cyanobacteria pigment. However, due to the small number of sensors with a spectral band of the PC absorption feature, it is difficult to develop semi-analytical models. This study evaluated the use of an empirical model to identify CHABs using TM and ETM+ sensors aboard Landsat 5 and 7 satellites. Five images were acquired for applying the model. Besides the images, data was also collected in the Guarapiranga Reservoir, in São Paulo Metropolitan Region, regarding the cyanobacteria cell count (cells/mL), which was used as an indicator of CHABs biomass. When model values were analyzed excluding calibration factors for temperate lakes, they showed a medium correlation (R²=0.81, p=0.036), while when the factors were included the model showed a high correlation (R²=0.96, p=0.003) to the cyanobacteria cell count. The empirical model analyzed proved useful as an important tool for policy makers, since it provided information regarding the horizontal distribution of CHABs which could not be acquired from traditional monitoring techniques.

Melanin is a very important pigment to human species, and besides defining skin, eyes and hair color, it is also involved in sun exposure protection. This pigment is classified into two subtypes: pheomelanin, which is responsible for lighter pigmentation and eumelanin, the dark pigment related. Due to this type of melanin variation it is possible to found different phenotypes of hair and skin color. The genetics MC1R variations are described as the most important for diversity in pigmentation, and this gene is directly related to the complex process of melanin synthesis. The use of these variations to phenotype prediction using genetic information has been used in Europe countries to infer physical features from biological samples, with the purpose of directing searches of criminal suspects and victims identification. The aim of this study was to analyze 8 major MC1R polymorphisms in a sample of Brazilian individuals. Analyzing 91 individuals, we observed with higher frequencies the polymorphisms rs1805005:G>T, rs2228479:G>A and rs885479:G>A, which are related to skin and hair colors, as previously showed in literature. These data suggest the possibility of predicting phenotype from genetic polymorphisms in Brazilian population. However it will be necessary to analyze a larger number of individuals to be able to confirm these associations and to perform a more detailed statistical analysis

Violacein is a deeply violet pigment produced by Chromobacterium violaceum, an ubique tropical and subtropical bacterium. This molecule presents many biological activities including antimicrobial, antimycotic, antiviral, antiprotozoal and antitumoral. Important reports pointed to a considerable bactericide activity, which brings an extremely necessary quest. This work evaluated the resistance of some bacterias of interest veterinary. It was obtained significant inhibition activity against Staphylococcus aureus came from bovine mastitis. It was also obtained important synergic relations when violacein and penicillin or cloranphenicol are combined

In this work were studied associations of ZnO with the natural products caffeic and feluric acids. Two preparation methods were used, that is, the sol-gel and a reflux procedure. In the sol-gel method, ZnO is produced by the basics hydrolysis of precursors in the presence of the organic filters (caffeic and feluric acids), which results in 30 nm (or less) ZnO particles with the organic filters (in dissociated form) bonded to the surface of ZnO. In the reflux method, a dispersion of ZnO in a water/ethanol mixture was kept under reflux (50oC/4h) in the presence of the organic acids. The ZnO particles used in the reflux method have a higher diameter than sol-gel ZnO particles, but the prepared associated product ZnO/Organic acids were similar. Despite of the difference in relation to crystallinity between the products, the preparation methods resulted in analogous associations with respect to the interaction of the organic filters with the ZnO surface. The caffeic/ZnO associations presented low photostability, which lead to the degradation of the organic filter. The other associations (feluric acid/ZnO) presented satisfactory results. The FT-IR spectroscopy confirmed the formation of the association, and the nature of the bond formed compared with the Zn-O bond in Zn2+/Felutic acid complexes. The isolated organic and inorganic filters, along with the associations were analyzed by diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and Uv-vis spectroscopy. The absorption edges and the critical wavelengths were analyzed and the effects of Zn-O bonds in feluric acid/ZnO associations described as a function of the relative position of the π/π* system of the organic filter. Finally the performance of the hybrid filters were investigated in terms of the absorption of UVA and UVB radiations, with the UVA/UVB ratio, an efficiency parameter largely used in the description of solar filters, sunscreen and suncare products

The materials designed to be used in electroluminescent (EL) devices construction are studied and improved since 1936. Great interests in the development of this kind of devices are mainly due to its low power consumption, flexibility, low cost and easy processing. One class of ELs devices with these characteristics are produced by employing a organic-polymeric/inorganic composite from a conductive polymer blend and an inorganic electroluminescent material (Zn2SiO4:Mn) dispersed in the polymeric matrix. This kind of device operates in d.c. or a.c. potentials, with EL of hundreds candela in the green region of the visible spectrum. However, few studies on the light emission were performed for these devices. In order to characterize devices made from composites, in this work is proposed a method of characterizing the electroluminescence associated with the impedance spectroscopy technique. To implement the technique of impedance spectroscopy was employ an experimental setup consisting of a source of a.c. voltage, an oscilloscope, and a reference resistor. Associated with this system, was use a photo diode and an analog electrometer to characterize the emitted light signal from the sample. The system was implemented allows characterization by impedance spectroscopy in the frequency range from 0.2 Hz up to 2 MHz and voltage amplitudes of 5 mV up to 20 kV. This system permits, at the same time, measurement of the RMS value of the luminance for devices in frequency range from 20 Hz up to 2 MHz. To test the system efficiency, an EL device was characterized showing analogous results to those reported in literature. A destruição da camada de ozônio resulta em um preocupante aumento na incidência de radiação ultravioleta (UV) na superfície da Terra, radiação esta, responsável pela ocorrência de danos na pele e pelo aparecimento do câncer de pele, tipo mais comum de câncer. Assim, neste trabalho foram desenvolvidos sistemas líquido-cristalinos multifuncionais contendo nanopartículas de dióxido de titânio, cuja propriedade fotoprotetora é bem conhecida, e alfa-tocoferol, um composto com ação antioxidante. Com isso, pretendeu-se desenvolver uma formulação que atue como protetor solar inorgânico, bloqueando a radiação UV e impedindo sua penetração que pode causar sérios danos à pele, além de conter o alfa-tocoferol que interage com os radicais livres, diminuindo os danos causados por estes. Para tanto, inicialmente foram preparadas formulações baseadas em dois diagramas de fases, as amostras que apresentaram separação de fase foram excluídas do trabalho, e as outras foram submetidas à análise de microscopia de luz polarizadas. Através da microscopia de luz polarizada foi possível concluir que a estrutura líquido-cristalina é mantida com a incorporação dos ativos no sistema, o que posteriormente foi confirmado com a análise por SAXS. A análise do potencial zeta permitiu verificar que na faixa de pH entre 5 e 7, indicada para produtos de uso tópico, é possível evitar aglomeração das partículas, e com isso obter um visual transparente do produto. A avaliação do comportamento possibilitou concluir que todas as amostras apresentaram uma consistência ideal para aplicação do produto na pele

A curcumina, um pigmento natural extraído do rizoma da Curcuma longa L. é utilizada em alimentos, principalmente aqueles condimentados com curry e açafrão. Vários estudos demonstram seu efeito benéfico em diversas doenças, tais como: diabetes, hepatopatias, câncer, entre outras. Uma de suas propriedades é a atividade antioxidante, pois em pequenas quantidades é capaz de inibir ou retardar processos oxidativos. Para substanciar o estudo desta propriedade, comparou-se a capacidade de captura de espécies reativas radicalares e não radicalares pela curcumina, com padrões (biomoléculas, exceto o trolox) antioxidantes: ascorbato, crocina, glutationa, quercetina, rutina, trolox e urato, em sistemas-modelo in vitro, sobre a captura dos radicais: 2-2'-azino-bis (3-etilbenzotiazolina-6-ácido sulfônico) (ABTS●+ ); 2,2-difenil-1 picril-hidrazila (DPPH● ); ânion radical superóxido (O2 ●-); HOCl/OCl- e H2O2. Investigou-se também seu efeito inibitório na geração do HOCl no sistema, mieloperoxidase (MPO)/H2O2/Cl- (via clorinante) e na inibição da oxidação do guaiacol MPO/H2O2/Guaiacol (via peroxidativa). A curcumina nos ensaios com ABTS●+ ou O2 ●-, apresentou o 3° menor IC50, 4,93 e 99,66 µmol/L, respectivamente; com o DPPH● apresentou o 6° menor IC50, 24,70 µmol/L; com o HOCl/OCl- apresentou o menor IC50, 1,12µmol/L e no ensaio com o H2O2 não atingiu o IC50. No ensaio com o sistema MPO/H2O2/Cl-, observou-se alteração da banda de absorção (bleaching) da curcumina (420 nm), além disso, nos ensaios com a via clorinante (MPO/H2O2/Cl-) e revelados com 3, 3’, 5, 5’- tetrametilbenzidina (TMB) e iodeto de potássio em meio ácido, observou-se aumento da absorbância (650 nm), o que impossibilitou o estudo de sua inibição nesta via. Atualmente, as pesquisas acadêmicas e industriais não estão voltadas apenas para a descoberta de novos fármacos, mas também para novas maneiras de administração de medicamentos pretendendo obter melhores ações farmacológicas alem de reduzir efeitos colaterais. Partindo deste pressuposto, estudos demonstram que inúmeras moléculas podem ser incorporadas a polímeros híbridos orgânico-inorgânico preparados pelo processo sol-gel, assim pretende-se estudar a possibilidade de sua aplicação no desenvolvimento de um dispositivo de liberação controlada de fármacos na forma de implantes subcutâneos. As matrizes hibridas para serem implantadas devem, necessariamente, ser estéreis. Para isto este trabalho analisa a interação entre o processo de esterilização e uma provável alteração estrutural nestes polímeros. A esterilização por calor úmido em autoclave e a esterilização por radiação gama foram escolhidas para analisar a correlação entre alteração estrutural do hibrido e o processo de eliminação de microorganismos. Outro aspecto que levamos em consideração foi a melhora das características mecânicas das matrizes poliméricas confeccionadas com poli óxido etileno de peso molecular 1900 (POE 1900) e poli óxido propileno de peso molecular 400 (POP 400). Para serem implantadas estas matrizes devem estar uniformes, e não podem trincar ou quebrar antes ou após a implantação. Considerando estes fatores foi adicionado as amostras um agente plastificante, o álcool polivinílico (PVA), na tentativa de melhorar estas características
