Draft of the Rules, Directions, and Statutes of the Boylston Professorship of Rhetoric and Oratory in Harvard College, [ca. 1804]

This original draft was probably written by Eliphalet Pearson (1752-1826) as a member of the committee charged with the task of establishing the rules, directions, and statutes for the Boylston Professorship by the Harvard Corporation and the Board of Overseers. This draft is heavily edited and contains many cross outs through the text.

II. Academic notebook, [ca. 1745]

This paper notebook contains undated and unattributed handwritten summaries and notes from published texts on world history, religion, and natural history, and was presumably kept by William Sever. The first page notes the death of poet Alexander Pope in 1744, constituting the latest date referenced in the notebook. The entries are typically short and offer condensed information on subjects including the histories of England, Japan and Siam; early Christian history; and natural religion.

Draft of President Leverett's Harvard College charter, [ca. 1723]

Two folio-sized leaves and two octavo-sized leaves containing a handwritten draft of a Harvard Charter in President Leverett's hand. Following a salutation to King George, the text begins, "Whereas there hath been for more than seventy years past in the Town of Cambridge..."

The antient customs of Harvard College, established by the Government of it, [ca. 1760s]

One-leaf undated handwritten fragment from the College customs signed "A true copy Attest Edward Wigglesworth" with the postscript "Thomas Leonards penison."

I. Calculation of the length of printed lines of all the volumes in the Harvard Library, ca. 1789

This series contains one small leaf with handwritten calculations related to the number of volumes in the Harvard College Library. The verso has the note: "No. of Vol: in Harvard College 11465 vol. making one line 15380 miles long. The document is in the hand of Loammi Baldwin Sr., and may have been created in 1789 while the Library was compiling a catalog of its holdings.

Letter from Levi Hedge to President John Kirkland, [ca. 1823]

Levi Hedge, Professor of Logic and Metaphysics, wrote Harvard president John Kirkland requesting renovations to the house which he occupied. Hedge's house was situated on North Street (now Massachusetts Avenue). He notes that the kitchen has a leaky sink, loose and unusable shelves, and is insufficiently insulated.

Glazier's report, [ca. 1765-1775]

On verso: S. Hastings, S. Kendal. This report outlines the glass needed for College buildings in the mid-18th century. Estimates include windows for Hollis, Massachusetts, and Harvard Halls and an unspecified College House.

The floor plan details all three floors of Harvard Hall, including its cellars, kitchen, chapel, and library. The items in this folder were reproduced from "The Burning of Harvard Hall, 1764, and its consequences," presented by F. Apthorp Foster at the April 1911 meeting of the Colonial Society of Massachusetts, and published in the Publications of the Colonial Society of Massachusetts, Volume XIV. The floor plan and exterior views were created by Pierre Eugène du Simitière in circa 1764. The original drawings are held in the Pierre Eugène du Simitière collection in the Ridgeway Branch of the Library Company of Philadelphia.

Measures of hall and chapel, [ca. 1800]

This note, likely in the hand of President Willard, directs Mr. [Josiah] Moore and Mr. [John] Walton measure the length, width, and height of the chapel, hall, and library in Harvard Hall. Includes each room's measurements.

Itemized list of cost estimates for shutters for Harvard Hall, compiled circa 1806. Includes supplies needed to install shutters for 24 windows in Harvard Hall. Materials needed include boards, nails, and cross corner hinges.
