As part of a multi-university research program funded by NSF, a comprehensive experimental and analytical study of seismic behavior of hybrid fiber reinforced polymer (FRP)-concrete column is presented in this dissertation. Experimental investigation includes cyclic tests of six large-scale concrete-filled FRP tube (CFFT) and RC columns followed by monotonic flexural tests, a nondestructive evaluation of damage using ultrasonic pulse velocity in between the two test sets and tension tests of sixty-five FRP coupons. Two analytical models using ANSYS and OpenSees were developed and favorably verified against both cyclic and monotonic flexural tests. The results of the two methods were compared. A parametric study was also carried out to investigate the effect of three main parameters on primary seismic response measures. The responses of typical CFFT columns to three representative earthquake records were also investigated. The study shows that only specimens with carbon FRP cracked, whereas specimens with glass or hybrid FRP did not show any visible cracks throughout cyclic tests. Further monotonic flexural tests showed that carbon specimens both experienced flexural cracks in tension and crumpling in compression. Glass or hybrid specimens, on the other hand, all showed local buckling of FRP tubes. Compared with conventional RC columns, CFFT column possesses higher flexural strength and energy dissipation with an extended plastic hinge region. Among all CFFT columns, the hybrid lay-up demonstrated the highest flexural strength and initial stiffness, mainly because of its high reinforcement index and FRP/concrete stiffness ratio, respectively. Moreover, at the same drift ratio, the hybrid lay-up was also considered as the best in term of energy dissipation. Specimens with glassfiber tubes, on the other hand, exhibited the highest ductility due to better flexibility of glass FRP composites. Furthermore, ductility of CFFTs showed a strong correlation with the rupture strain of FRP. Parametric study further showed that different FRP architecture and rebar types may lead to different failure modes for CFFT columns. Transient analysis of strong ground motions showed that the column with off-axis nonlinear filament-wound glass FRP tube exhibited a superior seismic performance to all other CFFTs. Moreover, higher FRP reinforcement ratios may lead to a brittle system failure, while a well-engineered FRP reinforcement configuration may significantly enhance the seismic performance of CFFT columns.

As an alternative to transverse spiral or hoop steel reinforcement, fiber reinforced polymers (FRPs) were introduced to the construction industry in the 1980's. The concept of concrete-filled FRP tube (CFFT) has raised great interest amongst researchers in the last decade. FRP tube can act as a pour form, protective jacket, and shear and flexural reinforcement for concrete. However, seismic performance of CFFT bridge substructure has not yet been fully investigated. Experimental work in this study included four two-column bent tests, several component tests and coupon tests. Four 1/6-scale bridge pier frames, consisting of a control reinforced concrete frame (RCF), glass FRP-concrete frame (GFF), carbon FRP-concrete frame (CFF), and hybrid glass/carbon FRP-concrete frame (HFF) were tested under reverse cyclic lateral loading with constant axial loads. Specimen GFF did not show any sign of cracking at a drift ratio as high as 15% with considerable loading capacity, whereas Specimen CFF showed that lowest ductility with similar load capacity as in Specimen GFF. FRP-concrete columns and pier cap beams were then cut from the pier frame specimens, and were tested again in three point flexure under monotonic loading with no axial load. The tests indicated that bonding between FRP and concrete and yielding of steel both affect the flexural strength and ductility of the components. The coupon tests were carried out to establish the tensile strength and elastic modulus of each FRP tube and the FRP mold for the pier cap beam in the two principle directions of loading. A nonlinear analytical model was developed to predict the load-deflection responses of the pier frames. The model was validated against test results. Subsequently, a parametric study was conducted with variables such as frame height to span ratio, steel reinforcement ratio, FRP tube thickness, axial force, and compressive strength of concrete. A typical bridge was also simulated under three different ground acceleration records and damping ratios. Based on the analytical damage index, the RCF bridge was most severely damaged, whereas the GFF bridge only suffered minor repairable damages. Damping ratio was shown to have a pronounced effect on FRP-concrete bridges, just the same as in conventional bridges. This research was part of a multi-university project, which is founded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation Research (NEESR) program.

In this thesis, producing ability of electricity by horizontal tidal current turbines and installing possibility of these turbines on bridge's piers in the marine environments has been studied to reduce primary implementation costs and make the plan, economical. To do this and to study its feasibility, the exerted forces from installing horizontal tidal current turbines were compared with the forces applied to the bridge structure during designing process (given in the Standards). Then, the allowable ranges of the overloading which is tolerable by the piers of the bridge were obtained. Accordingly, it is resulted that for installing these turbines, the piers of the existing bridges are required to be strengthened. Because of increasing usage of renewable powers and as a suggestion, the exerted forces from installing turbine for loading coefficients of different Standards are given. Finally as an example, preliminary designing of a horizontal tidal current turbine was carried out for Gesham Channel and the forces exerted from turbine to the bridge's pier were calculated for the future usage in order to create a test site of real dimensions.

Ce travail aborde l’un des problèmes majeurs dans la traduction d’un texte, c’est-à-dire la présence de plusieurs registres et de plusieurs langues au sein d’un texte source, problème qui rend la restitution d’un texte dans une autre langue particulièrement ardue. Le titre « Traduire le dialecte et l’oralité : Pier Vittorio Tondelli et Les nouveaux libertins » décrit les thèmes abordés : l’exemple choisi pour cette analyse sera en effet le roman Altri libertini de Pier Vittorio Tondelli, traduit en français sous le titre Les nouveaux libertins. Il s’agit d’un roman caractérisé par la présence de dialectes, de diverses langues étrangères, d’argot juvénile et d’un style très oralisé, le tout cohabitant avec l’italien standard. Au cours de cette analyse, nous allons voir comment la traduction en français a tenté de reproduire la même pluralité de styles qui distingue Altri libertini. Après une introduction centrée sur le concept de dialecte, le rôle de l’hétérolinguisme en traduction, ainsi que sur l’auteur Pier Vittorio Tondelli, nous analyserons des extraits du roman et leur traduction française correspondante ; ces extraits seront caractérisés par l’utilisation de certains mots et expressions qui illustrent le large éventail de langues et de registres présents dans le roman, ceci afin de comprendre comment la traductrice française a restitué certains concepts, quelles difficultés majeures elle a rencontrées et quelles solutions elle a adoptées.

A seguito di un’esigenza esplicitata della Divisione IMA Ilapak Lugano, il team del PaLM Entreprise ha creato il Modulo Segnalazione Modifiche (MSM) con lo scopo di standardizzare e strutturare il flusso informativo relativo alle modifiche della distinta base dagli uffici tecnici a quelli della logistica e produzione. La prima analisi effettuata è stata incentrata sulla situazione AS-IS e sul primo applicativo che utilizzava Ilapak Lugano, il Segnalazione Modifiche (SM). Dopo aver appreso il funzionamento del vecchio SM, sono emerse diverse criticità come la scarsa integrazione con la piattaforma PaLM e con gli altri sistemi che conducevano a problemi di trasmissione di informazione tra gli uffici e ad errori nel recupero delle modifiche corrette. Dopo differenti riunioni tra i due team sono state concordate le prime specifiche. Successivamente l’elaborato procede con un’analisi della situazione TO-BE, descrivendo le caratteristiche ed i vantaggi del MSM. Uno dei principali benefici è che il Modulo è perfettamente integrato all’interno del PaLM e con tutti i sistemi PDM e CAD. Tutto ciò permette di migliorare la comunicazione e la collaborazione tra i vari dipartimenti, in special modo tra gli uffici tecnici e la logistica e con i fornitori. La terza ed ultima analisi è, invece, una valutazione economica: vengono calcolati i costi della situazione AS-IS, quelli della TO-BE e, in seguito, viene fatta un’analisi costi/benefici, confrontando i due scenari. Attraverso l’implementazione del MSM, si ottengono i seguenti risultati: non solo si ottiene una riduzione dei costi, ma anche un risparmio importante di tempo per gli operatori. Ilapak Lugano è risultata essere la portavoce di un progetto che, in realtà, molte altre Divisioni IMA desiderano. Senza dubbio, il fine ultimo del progetto del MSM è quello di introdurlo in quante più Divisioni possibili, rendendolo un modulo indispensabile all’interno dell’azienda.

A atenção à saúde das crianças tem como objetivo garantir um adequado desenvolvimento nesse período da vida a partir de um estudo adequado nas diferentes faixas etárias para conseguir um desenvolvimento e crescimento ótimo, abordando aspectos ambientais, biopsicossociais, promoção a saúde e prevenção de agravos como estratégia fundamental. O acompanhamento das crianças na atenção primária é de fundamental relevância, pois pode atuar de forma preventiva na diminuição das taxas de mortalidade infantil com a garantia de um acompanhamento de qualidade. Objetivando qualificar a atenção das crianças pertencentes à Unidade de Saúde Agenor Paolo da Silva do município de Alto Alegre/RR foi realizada uma intervenção em saúde entre os meses de fevereiro e junho de 2015 direcionada à população anteriormente citada. Inicialmente, foi organizado um projeto com os seguintes objetivos: ampliar a cobertura, melhorar a adesão e qualidade dos atendimentos às crianças, melhorar o registro das informações, mapear as crianças de risco e promover saúde. A relevância da intervenção encontra-se na garantia da saúde por meio de um acompanhamento efetivo e humanizado incluindo ações de prevenção e promoção à saúde, além de diagnóstico e tratamento precoce das patologias que podem ocorrer nesse período. Para alcançar os objetivos foram realizadas ações nos quatro eixos pedagógicos do curso, a saber: monitoramento e avaliação, organização e gestão do serviço, engajamento público e qualificação da prática clínica. Utilizamos a Planilha de coleta de dados e ficha espelho disponibilizada pela Universidade Federal de Pelotas. Antes da intervenção, das 162 crianças estimadas para a área, a equipe acompanhava 6% (11) das crianças menores de 1 ano. Diante disso, a equipe propôs a intervenção para realizar uma ampliação e qualificação da atenção a saúde das crianças. Desta forma, após a intervenção alcançamos como principais resultados o acompanhamento na puericultura de 79 crianças até 72 meses (48%) estimadas para a área. A maioria dos indicadores de qualidade foi alcançada em sua totalidade, tais como, monitoramento de crianças com excesso de peso, monitoramento do desenvolvimento, realização do teste do pezinho e triagem auditiva. Os resultados que não tiveram êxito foram vacinação em dia para 73 crianças (92,4%), suplementação de ferro para 20 crianças (87%) e primeira consulta odontológica para 55 crianças (77,5%). As ações desenvolvidas na unidade durante a intervenção podem ser consideradas como ações simples, mas de grande relevância para a qualificação da assistência as crianças, pois contribuíram para a melhoria dos atendimentos dispensados.

The metabolic enzyme fatty acid synthase (FASN) is responsible for the endogenous synthesis of palmitate, a saturated long-chain fatty acid. In contrast to most normal tissues, a variety of human cancers overexpress FASN. One such cancer is cutaneous melanoma, in which the level of FASN expression is associated with tumor invasion and poor prognosis. We previously reported that two FASN inhibitors, cerulenin and orlistat, induce apoptosis in B16-F10 mouse melanoma cells via the intrinsic apoptosis pathway. Here, we investigated the effects of these inhibitors on non-tumorigenic melan-a cells. Cerulenin and orlistat treatments were found to induce apoptosis and decrease cell proliferation, in addition to inducing the release of mitochondrial cytochrome c and activating caspases-9 and -3. Transfection with FASN siRNA did not result in apoptosis. Mass spectrometry analysis demonstrated that treatment with the FASN inhibitors did not alter either the mitochondrial free fatty acid content or composition. This result suggests that cerulenin- and orlistat-induced apoptosis events are independent of FASN inhibition. Analysis of the energy-linked functions of melan-a mitochondria demonstrated the inhibition of respiration, followed by a significant decrease in mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm) and the stimulation of superoxide anion generation. The inhibition of NADH-linked substrate oxidation was approximately 40% and 61% for cerulenin and orlistat treatments, respectively, and the inhibition of succinate oxidation was approximately 46% and 52%, respectively. In contrast, no significant inhibition occurred when respiration was supported by the complex IV substrate N,N,N',N'-tetramethyl-p-phenylenediamine (TMPD). The protection conferred by the free radical scavenger N-acetyl-cysteine indicates that the FASN inhibitors induced apoptosis through an oxidative stress-associated mechanism. In combination, the present results demonstrate that cerulenin and orlistat induce apoptosis in non-tumorigenic cells via mitochondrial dysfunction, independent of FASN inhibition.
