In the early 1990s, the Cold War ended, Back to the Future III was in theaters, and Iowa led the nation in reading and mathematics. Times have changed. A decade into the 21st century, Iowa has conceded its place at the top. During the past 20 years, achievement trends illustrate Iowa’s slide from a national leader in PK-12 education to a national average―sometimes below average―performer as other states (and nations) have accelerated past the state. Iowa students’ futures are at risk. Collectively, Iowa students are not hitting the mark in mathematics and reading competency. Sure, Iowa has its share of super-achievers. But the mass of Iowa students—not just underprivileged or minority students, but many of the majority white, relatively affluent students as well—are falling short of what is needed to attain quality jobs, growing incomes, and secure livelihoods in today’s globally competitive world. The world has moved beyond the industrial age and information age and is now in the innovation age. Students must be armed not only with knowledge, but also with skills and insights needed to critically analyze and innovate. The pressing problems and grand opportunities the world faces require that many more people contribute as innovators and problem solvers, not order takers and implementers. Innovators will prosper. Order takers will stagnate. The days of an abundance of low-skill jobs have come to an end.

Iowans have long shared a deep commitment to giving our children the best education possible. We recognize young people today must meet higher expectations than ever to thrive in this global, knowledge-based economy. For the sake of our children and our state, it is vitally important that we build on our tradition of excellence to improve our schools. Iowa’s house of education still has a strong foundation, but it is also in need of a major remodel to be ready for the days ahead.

Another recently enacted law is the Iowa Safe Schools Law. Effective September 1, 2007, Iowa Code Chapter 280 requires both public and private schools to establish policies prohibiting harassment and bullying against students by employees, school volunteers, or other students. Sexual Orientation and Gender identity are covered under the Safe Schools Law. Students may now seek remedies under both Chapter 216 and Chapter 280.

This legislative brief serves as an overview of the legislation, which I encourage you to read and discuss in greater detail. the goals behind these policies are straightforward: Comprehensive and systematically raise and support the teaching profession while expanding efforts to customize instruction to every student's passion and talents. Iowa's children deserve the best education can provide so they leave our schools with the knowledge and skills necessary for successful and rewarding lives. Iowa has many good schools with hard-working, talented educators who deserves our respect and appreciation. Iowa and Some Iowans is a classed bibliography of materials by Iowans or about Iowa. It is in the same order in which the average school or public library or media center would shelve materials, that is, nonfiction in order using the Dewey Decimal System, and fiction in alphabetical order by author. Biographies and autobiographies are generally entered 920's. A few may be entered under the subject with which the biography is related. An attempt is made to provide most of the information needed to catalog each title including the Iowa-related subject headings, and the joint authors, artists and series titles pertinent to the bibliography. These items are included at the bottom of the entry as numbered “tracings” and are a record of the items included in the indexes. OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence of and the factors related to overweight and obesity in a sample of children from the region of Sintra, Portugal. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Cross-sectional study, stratified for freguesia with random selection of schools. Height, weight, triceps skinfold, upper arm and waist circumferences were measured, and overweight/obesity defined according to international criteria. Breast-feeding, number of daily meals and parents' height and weight data were also collected. RESULTS: One thousand two hundred and twenty-five children aged 6-10 years were assessed. Overall prevalence of overweight and obesity was 35.6% (23% overweight and 12.6% obesity). Overweight or obese children had higher triceps skinfold, upper arm circumference, arm muscle area, and waist circumference than their normal weight counterparts (P < 0.001). On multivariate analysis, relatively to a child without obese progenitors, a child with one obese progenitor had an obesity risk multiplied by 2.78 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.76-4.38), while a child with two obese progenitors had a risk multiplied by 6.47 (95% CI: 5.59-16.19). Conversely, being picky was significantly related with a smaller risk of obesity: for boys, odds ratio (OR) = 0.15 (95% CI: 0.04-0.63); for girls, OR = 0.19 (95% CI: 0.06-0.64). Finally, no relationships were found between obesity, birth weight, birth height or breast-feeding. DISCUSSION: Prevalence of overweight and obesity are elevated among children of the Sintra region in Portugal compared to most other regions of Europe. The relationship with the parents' nutritional state stresses the need to target families for preventing obesity.

Aquest és un projecte d'investigació descriptiva. Té com a finalitat conèixer i comprendre com és la inclusió dels nens amb Paràlisis Cerebral a les escoles ordinàries (bressol, primària i secundària), de la ciutat de Barcelona, des de la mirada de la Teràpia Ocupacional. Per tant, primer s'ha d'investigar quants alumnes amb aquesta lesió estan inclosos en escoles ordinàries, com també conèixer quants alumnes tornen a l'escola especial després d'estar escolaritzats a la ordinària. D'altra banda, es pretén descriure les perspectives i percepcions dels professionals i els alumnes implicats a la inclusió, i què succeeix a l'escola ordinària perquè alguns alumnes hagin de tornar a l'especial en algun moment de la seva escolarització. El projecte és de caire qualitatiu, on els instruments per l'obtenció de dades són protocols d'observació, entrevistes semi- estructurades i enquestes. Encara que per obtenir la mostra i els participants s'utilitzaran tècniques quantitatives. Les limitacions de l'estudi seran aquelles escoles, professionals i alumnes que per motius personals no vulguin participar de la mostra.

L’escola bressol és el primer centre educatiu on els infants tenen accés a l’era digital després de l’entorn familiar que és el primer que reben després del seu naixement. Aquests centres educatius també han de donar resposta a la societat digital que hi ha actualment per tal d’aconseguir un desenvolupament integral de l’infant. Per realitzar aquesta integració de les Tecnologies de la Informació i la Comunicació (TIC) al centre és important una bona formació per part dels docents i tenir clar quins són els elements que fan una bona pràctica TIC. En el present treball final de grau s’aprofundeix en les bones pràctiques educatives en l’ús de les TIC i, posteriorment, es realitza una proposta de transferència de les mateixes a una escola de nova creació.
