We investigated the effects of environmental color on the reproductive behavior of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus. Two environmental colors were tested by covering the aquarium (60 x 60 x 40 cm) with white (12 groups) or blue (13 groups) cellophane and observing reproductive behavior in groups of 2 males (10.27 ± 0.45 cm) and 3 females (10.78 ± 0.45 cm) each. After assignment to the respective environmental color (similar luminosity = 100 to 120 Lux), the animals were observed until reproduction (identified by eggs in the female's mouth) or up to 10 days after the first nest building. Photoperiod was from 6:00 h to 18:00 h every day. Food was offered in excess once a day and water quality was similar among aquaria. Daily observations were made at 8:00, 11:00, 14:00 and 17:00 h regarding: a) latency to the first nest, b) number of nests, c) gravel weight removed (the male excavates the nest in the bottom of the aquarium), d) nest area, and e) mouthbrooding incubation (indication of reproduction). The proportion of reproducing fish was significantly higher (6 of 13) in the group exposed to the blue color compared the group exposed to the white color (1 of 12; Goodman's test of proportions). Moreover, males under blue light removed significantly larger masses of gravel (blue = 310.70 ± 343.50 g > white = 130.38 ± 102.70 g; P = 0.01) and constructed wider nests (blue = 207.93 ± 207.80 cm² > white = 97.68 ± 70.64 cm²; P = 0.03) than the control (white). The other parameters did not differ significantly between light conditions. We concluded that reproduction in the presence of blue light was more frequent and intense than in the presence of white light.

The chemical modulation of agonistic behavior and conspecific recognition were tested in juveniles of the fish Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (L.). After a 7-day isolation period, the fish were grouped (four individuals per aquarium) for 7 days. Then fish of alpha and beta ranks (previously matched for similar size) were paired in a neutral territory for analysis of their agonistic interaction. Pairs composed of alpha and beta fish were established with either fish from the same group (familiar) or from two different groups (unfamiliar). The pairs were tested in contiguous compartments, either with water exchange between the compartments or in the absence of water exchange. In each condition the fish were separated by a transparent glass partition. Twelve pairs were tested in each experimental condition. Fish behavior was videotaped and the following variables were analyzed: (a) frequency of and time spent in agonistic patterns, (b) latency to start fighting, and (c) duration of swimming. Water exchange between compartments decreased agonistic interactions. This effect, however, was more pronounced in pairs of fish coming from the same group (in this case, subordinate fish spent less time in confrontations than dominant ones). We conclude that chemical communication decreases aggression in this species by (1) inducing an alarm reaction and (2) increasing conspecific recognition (thus stabilizing the dominance hierarchy). Increase in heterogeneous growth as a result of grouping in the Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (L.), is presumed to be partially promoted by the social stress imposed by the dominant fish on the subordinates. Such stress may decrease the energy available for growth. In this study, the effect of social stress on carbohydrate metabolism was studied in adult, growing males. All animals were deprived of food during the experimentation period and pairing was imposed for either 2 or 4 days. Glycemia was measured before and after pairing, and muscle and liver glycogen contents were determined only after pairing. Subordinate fish showed the highest consumption of carbohydrate reserves. This response was caused by the social stress imposed which corroborates the idea that metabolic differences promoted by social stress may be involved in the rouping effect on heterogeneous growth in the Nile tilapia.

The fitness of the snatching frequency as an indicator of food intake in Nile tilapia finger-lings, Oreochromis niloticus (L), was studied. Five groups of four individuals each were used after a two-day starvation period. The hierarchical rank among individuals in the same group was registered. Food in the form of tiny pellets (ranging from 1.30 to 1.95 mm in diameter) was offered, and the individual snatching frequency was observed during a 20-min period. The animals were then sacrificed for evaluation of stomach contents. It was concluded that snatching frequency is not a good parameter to indicate individual food intake in this species when fed as a group with pellets crushed into tiny particles. This raises a problem for investigations that require evaluation of the cumulative effect of competition on food intake, such as growth or conversion efficiency studies. Furthermore, a very low correlation between snatching frequency and food intake was shown in the third hierarchical rank. It is suggested that the linearity assumed in such hierarchies should be reconsidered.

Metabolic differences derived from social stress usually show data with high variance that may hinder the finding of important differences. Since such high variance may be caused by agonistic variability occurring during social interactions, this work tested whether metabolism is associated with agonistic profile in the cichlid fish Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (L.). Metabolism was inferred from oxygen consumption, resistance to progressive hypoxia and ventilatory rate. Fifteen pairs of alevins were used for each metabolic and behavioral series. An ethogram based on 8 types of agonistic interactions was employed. Agonistic profiles were determined and associated with the physiological parameters later on. The test of canonical correlation showed significant association between some agonistic profiles and metabolism. Ventral nipping and lateral fight appeared as the two most important in promoting association with metabolism.
SYNAPTONEMAL COMPLEX-ANALYSIS IN SPERMATOCYTES OF TILAPIA, OREOCHROMIS-NILOTICUS (PISCES, CICHLIDAE)
Resumo:
Some adaptations of the synaptonemal complex (SC) whole-mounting technique first used in plants permitted its application to meiotic studies in tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus. Direct observation of the chromosome pairing process and bivalent structure during the meiotic prophase of this fish species by light and electron microscopy permitted the analysis of SCs in autosomes and the possible identification of sex chromosomes. The analysis of SCs in spermatocytes of 0. niloticus revealed that all 22 bivalent chromosomes completely paired, except for the occurrence of a size heteromorphism in the terminal region of the largest bivalent associated with the presence of an incompletely paired segment during the synapsis process, which may be the cytological visualization of an XX/XY sex chromosome system in this species.

To evaluate the nutritional value of palm kernel meal on the performance Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), five isonitrogenous (30% crude protein), isoenergetic (2800 kcal/kg of digestible energy), and isofibrous (10% crude fiber) diets, with increasing levels of palm kernel meal (0, 7, 14, 21, 28 and 35%). were ad libitum fed to fingerlings with initial body weight of 1.52g +/- 0.04, housed per 120 days in 35 aquarium of 60 liters with fingerlings each. The environmental culture condition were monitored during all experimental period. Statistical analyses of recorded data were performed through polynomial regression models. To determine the apparent digestibility, macroscopic analysis of viscera and microscopic analysis of intestine epithelium were performed. The obtained results indicated that the inclusion of palm kernel meal up to 35% Nile tilapia diets did not affects the apparent digestibility and did not induce any pathological effects on viscera and intestinal epithelium.

The aim of this study was to analyze the genetic diversity of four Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) strains using the RAPD marker. Fin samples of GIFT (G), Chitralada (C), Supreme (S) and Bouake (B) juvenile stocks have been collected. The 11 primers used yielded 81 fragments of which 41.98% were polymorphic. The percentage of polymorphic loci (G: 18.52%; C: 19.75%; S: 20.99% and B: 24.79%) showed that there was a genetic differentiation among the strains, showing the G(st) values a high (BxG: 0.231; BxC: 0.224; GxC: 0.194 and SxC: 0.208) and elevated (BxS: 0.315 and GxS: 0.270) differentiation. The highest gene flow (N(m)) was among the GxC (2.082) strains. The distance and genetic identity values (0.044 and 0.957 respectively) and the dendrogram indicate that the GxC is the most genetically similar strains. The genetic similarity was high among of the strains (G: 0,932; C: 0,903; S: 0,891 and B: 0.900). These results will enable a correct reproductive and genetic strains management.

Organic selenium in the diet of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) broodstock. The aim of this study to test the effect of organic selenium supplementation in the diets of Nile tilapia broodstock. Growth, reproductive performance and performance of fingerlings were evaluated. Eighty adult fish were used, with average weight of 121.7 g and divided into groups of four animals (3 female and 1 male) stocked in 20 tanks with 1.5 cubic meters. The fish were fed five diets containing different levels of organic selenium (0.0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, and 1.0 mg kg-1 ration). In the experimental period, females from all tanks were captured and the eggs collected. The experimental design was entirely randomized, with five treatments and four replicates. To evaluate progeny performance, the fingerlings were shared in four aquariums and fed during 30 days with commercial diet (45% CP). The supplementation with organic selenium did not affect the productive performance as with the reproductive parameters of the broodstock (p > 0.05). on the other hand, the broodstock fed with 0.50 mg of organic selenium produced fingerlings that presented improved weight gain (p < 0.05) compared to fish fed the control diet.
