The cataphoretic purification of helium was investigated for binary mixtures of He with Ar, Ne, N2, O2, CO, and CO2 in DC glow discharge. An experimental technique was developed to continuously measure the composition in the anode end-bulb without sample withdrawal. Discharge currents ranged from 10 ma to 100 ma. Total gas pressure ranged from 2 torr to 9 torr. Initial compositions of the minority component in He ranged from 1.2 mole percent to 7.5 mole percent.

The cataphoretic separation of Ar and Ne from He was found to be in agreement with previous investigators. The cataphoretic separation of N2, O2, and CO from He was found to be similar to noble gas systems in that the steady-state separation improved with (1) increasing discharge current, (2) increasing gas pressure, and (3) decreasing initial composition of the minority component. In the He-CO2 mixture, the CO2 dissociated to CO plus O2. The fraction of CO2 dissociated was directly proportional to the current and pressure and independent of initial composition.

The experimental results for the separation of Ar, Ne, N2, O2, and CO from He were interpreted in the framework of a recently proposed theoretical model involving an electrostatic Peclet number. In the model the electric field was assumed to be constant. This assumption was checked experimentally and the maximum variation in electric field was 35% in time and 30% in position. Consequently, the assumption of constant electric field introduced no more than 55% variation in the electrostatic Peclet number during a separation.

To aid in the design of new cataphoretic systems, the following design criteria were developed and tested in detail: (1) electric field independent of discharge current, (2) electric field directly proportional to total pressure, (3) ion fraction of impurity directly proportional to discharge current, and (4) ion fraction of impurity independent of total pressure. Although these assumptions are approximate, they enabled the steady-state concentration profile to be predicted to within 25% for 75% of the data. The theoretical model was also tested with respect to the characteristic time associated with transient cataphoresis. Over 80% of the data was within a factor of two of the calculated characteristic times.

The electrostatic Peclet number ranged in value from 0.13 to 4.33. Back-calculated ion fractions of the impurity component ranged in value from 4.8x10-6 to 178x10-6.

Several alpine vertebrates share a distribution pattern that extends across the South-western Palearctic but is limited to the main mountain massifs. Although they are usually regarded as cold-adapted species, the range of many alpine vertebrates also includes relatively warm areas, suggesting that factors beyond climatic conditions may be driving their distribution. In this work we first recognize the species belonging to the mentioned biogeographic group and, based on the environmental niche analysis of Plecotus macrobullaris, we identify and characterize the environmental factors constraining their ranges. Distribution overlap analysis of 504 European vertebrates was done using the Sorensen Similarity Index, and we identified four birds and one mammal that share the distribution with P. macrobullaris. We generated 135 environmental niche models including different variable combinations and regularization values for P. macrobullaris at two different scales and resolutions. After selecting the best models, we observed that topographic variables outperformed climatic predictors, and the abruptness of the landscape showed better predictive ability than elevation. The best explanatory climatic variable was mean summer temperature, which showed that P. macrobullaris is able to cope with mean temperature ranges spanning up to 16 degrees C. The models showed that the distribution of P. macrobullaris is mainly shaped by topographic factors that provide rock-abundant and open-space habitats rather than climatic determinants, and that the species is not a cold-adapted, but rather a cold-tolerant eurithermic organism. P. macrobullaris shares its distribution pattern as well as several ecological features with five other alpine vertebrates, suggesting that the conclusions obtained from this study might be extensible to them. We concluded that rock-dwelling and open-space foraging vertebrates with broad temperature tolerance are the best candidates to show wide alpine distribution in the Western Palearctic.

We observed and described some phenomena, which were that when a alpha-BBO crystal was irradiated by a focused femtosecond laser beam, the temperature effect happened in a minute area of focus, then the induced beta-BBO phase was separated within the minute area in the alpha-BBO crystal. Size-related differences in power production and swim speed duration may contribute to the observed deficit of nursing calves in relation to lactating females killed in sets by tuna purse-seiners in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean (ETP). Power production and swim-speed duration were estimated for northeastern spotted dolphins (Stenella attenuata), the species (neonate through adult) most often captured by the fishery. Power required by neonates to swim unassisted was 3.6 times that required of an adult to swim the same speed. Estimated unassisted burst speed for neonates is only about 3 m/s compared to about 6 m/s for adults. Estimated long-term sustainable speed is about 1 m/s for neonates compared to about 2.5 m/s for adults. Weight-specific power requirements decrease as dolphin calves increase in size, but power estimates for 2-year-old spotted dolphin calves are still about 40% higher than power estimates for adults, to maintain the same speed. These estimated differences between calves and adults are conservative because the calculations do not include accommodation for reduced aerobic capacity in dolphin calves compared to adults. Discrepancies in power production are probably ameliorated under normal circumstances by calves drafting next to their mothers, and by employing burst-coast or leap-burst-coast swimming, but the relatively high speeds associated with evasion behaviors during and after tuna sets likely diminish use of these energy-saving strategies by calves.
