Alkali phosphatase activity and hydrochemical structure of waters in the Barents and Norwegian seas were investigated. In a sea with the seasonal bioproduction cycle alkali phosphatase activity is also seasonal, rising with trophic level of waters. At the end of hydrological and biological winter activity is practically zero. Alkali phosphatase activity is especially important in summer, when plankton has consumed winter supply of phosphate in the euphotic layer and nutrient limitation of primary production begins. In summer production and destruction cycle, apparent time for recycling of phosphorus by phosphatase in suspended matter in the euphotic layer of the Barents Sea and Norwegian Sea averages from 7 to 30 hours.

A rapid, economic and sensitive chemiluminescent method involving flow-injection analysis was developed for the determination of dipyrone in pharmaceutical preparations. The method is based on the chemiluminescent reaction between quinolinic hydrazide and hydrogen peroxide in a strongly alkaline medium, in which vanadium(IV) acts as a catalyst. Principal chemical and physical variables involved in the flow-injection system were optimized using a modified simplex method. The variations in the quantum yield observed when dipyrone was present in the reaction medium were used to determine the concentration of this compound. The proposed method requires no preconcentration steps and reliably quantifies dipyrone over the linear range 1–50 µg/mL. In addition, a sample throughput of 85 samples/h is possible. The Iberian pork industry is a typically Spanish industry. The associated image by the consumer to these products corresponds to products made from Iberian pigs in extensive farms (meadows), and fattened in open range. However, according to data released by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment, more than 70 percent of the Iberian pigs produced in Spain are raised on factory farms. The Iberian pork industry is in process of change, both by modifications resulting from the crisis in the sector, and the expected ones in the quality standard, recently agreed. In this environment where there is a significant reduction in trade margins in all links of the value chain of Iberian ham, becomes important to study its structure and operation, identifying the aspects that improve economic efficiency along the value chain and their concordance along it. Likewise, part of the consumers begins searching for quality products, they are interested in certain products that guarantee some sort of quality or production and processing practices, like organic products. There are several studies on various aspects of the Iberian pork industry, made by different institutions, such as universities, private institutions and some European projects. In general, their goal is focused on improving the Iberian hog production or on improving the elaboration of hams. The novelty of the research conducted in this PhD thesis lies in the study of the aspects that determine the economic efficiency of the value chain of Iberian ham from Guijuelo designation of origin, and the comparison between the features that organic or conventional production of Iberian ham brings to it. The objectives propound in this research are the improvement of the value chain of Iberian ham from Guijuelo designation of origin, through the study of its structural and operational problematic. The proposed specific objectives are the improvement of the economic efficiency Resumen in trade relations between the different links in the value chain, and the promotion of the supply of Iberian organic pork products, through the comparative study of conventional and organic productions. In order to achieve these objectives, the used methodology is the agrifood value chain, using as analysis tools the Delphi method, and a SWOT analysis of the Iberian pork industry. The primary sources of information come partly from the collaboration in the European project Q-Porkchains, coordinated by Dr. Jacques Trienekens, and partly from the questionnaires specially designed for the Delphi analysis performed. The secondary sources come from published academic papers, specialized journal articles and reports published by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment. The research conclusions are as follows. Trade relations in the studied value chain are managed, as it is granted a great value to business relationships based on trust, both in the supply of products and in the sale in each link. However, the portfolio that is offered throughout the value chain is not properly managed, since the economic efficiency obtained for the same product is different in each link. Moreover, although the designation of origin of Guijuelo is a well-known brand, the effort made to acquire a collective quality trademark has not been entirely satisfactory, especially in the distribution link. Due to it, it is important to highlight that it is recommended to create a brand focused on quality, and indeed to change the firms integrating the vale chain, if the goal is not shared by all the companies. It is essential to ensure the quality of the product to the consumer, through the transmission of the available information related to the quality standard of Iberian pork products and of the Guijuelo Regulating Council. A detailed study of potential niche markets is required, in order to reach customers looking for a differentiated quality product as Iberian ham of Guijuelo designation of origin. It should be taken into consideration the group of allergy sufferers as potential customers, as they do not easily find pork products in the market free of allergens. Innovation is very important in this industry, and new products could be commercialized that help to shorten the value chain, as fresh acorn Iberian pork. Nowadays, the organic production of Iberian pork products is not significant. The operation is very similar in both conventional and organic production of Iberian pork products, except in the food received by Iberian hogs and the sort of medicinal treatments allowed in each production. The organic acorn Iberian pork production could be interesting for export. Acorn Iberian hams would have a well-known hallmark, which guarantees a traditional production, -as it is done in many extensive holdings of Iberian acorn-pigs-, and that is appreciated by consumers in other countries This niche of consumers could pay for differentiated quality products. Perhaps, this sort of production could solve the limitation to national scope of the quality standard of Iberian pork products. The lack of clarity and unanimity in the industry on the quality of Iberian pork products has been perceived in the agreed changes of the legislation as well as the interest of the processing industry in hams of quality categories which are not linked to extensive but intensive productions, due to their higher sales volume and better yields. This situation pushed "acorn pure Iberian " pigs farmers to split from the Iberian industry, where the importance of cross Iberian pig from intensive farms is growing so high that they can influence the negotiations and decisions taken inside and outside the industry.

This present work deals with the instability of structures made of various materials. It captures and models different types of instabilities using numerical analysis. Firstly, we consider bifurcation for anisotropic cylindrical shells subject to axial loading and internal pressure. Analysis of bifurcation and post bifurcation of inflated hyperelastic thick-walled cylinder is formulated using a numerical procedure based on the modified Riks method for an incompressible material with two preferred directions which are mechanically equivalent and are symmetrically disposed. Secondly, bulging/necking motion in doubly fiber-reinforced incompressible nonlinearly elastic cylindrical shells is captured and we consider two cases for the nature of the anisotropy: (i) reinforcing models that have a particular influence on the shear response of the material and (ii) reinforcing models that depend only on the stretch in the fiber direction. The different instability motions are considered. Axial propagation of the bulging instability mode in thin-walled cylinders under inflation is analyzed. We present the analytical solution for this particular motion as well as for radial expansion during bulging evolution. For illustration, cylinders that are made of either isotropic incompressible non-linearly elastic materials or doubly fiber reinforced incompressible non-linearly elastic materials are considered. Finally, strain-softening constitutive models are considered to analyze two concrete structures: a reinforced concrete beam and an unreinforced notch beam. The bifurcation point is captured using the Riks method used previously to analyze bifurcation of a pressurized cylinder.

ABSTRACT Geographical indications play a key role in environmental, social and economic sustainabily of agricultura worldwide. This research aims to analyze the way their recognition and protection can be enhanced to create value added for the producer and the whole society. It has been reviewed the multilateral and European frame of protection of geographical indications and the relation with trademarks to evaluate the need of improvement. Moreover, it has been explored the way geographical indications contribute to increase value added and equity in developing countries, with special attention to the case of coffee. Thanks to the use of the Delphi method and qualitative interviews to relevant experts during the empirical research, it has been posible to make an accurate SWOT analysis of geographical indications sector and define measures to improve the Spanish and European quality policy, some of them related to international trade.

An analytical method was developed for the simultaneous determination in poultry manure of 41 organic contaminants belonging to different chemical classes: pesticides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, polychlorinated biphenyls, and polybrominated diphenyl ethers. Poultry manure was extracted with a modified QuEChERS method, and the extracts were analyzed by isotope dilution GC/MS. Recovery of these contaminants from samples spiked at levels ranging from 25 to 100 ng/g was satisfactory for all the compounds. The developed procedure provided LODs from 0.8 to 9.6 ng/g. The analysis of poultry manure samples collected on different farms confirmed the presence of some of the studied contaminants. Pyrethroids and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were the main contaminants detected.

Although cultural industries can benefit from social networks in many ways, few Spanish studies examine the extent to which firms within this economic sector actually use such networks. This study's objective is to investigate the role of online social networks in Spanish cultural firms. The study begins with a literature review on cultural industries and social networks. Then the study proceeds to a Delphi analysis that draws upon experts' opinions. Results reveal a predominance of utilitarian uses over expressive ones, as well as an overriding use of proactive motivations rather than reactive ones within the context of cultural firms' use of social networks. The study confirms the profitability of these networks and the transfer of influence or power from providers to the consumers of cultural goods and services.

Hysteresis models that eliminate the artificial pumping errors associated with the Kool-Parker (KP) soil moisture hysteresis model, such as the Parker-Lenhard (PL) method, can be computationally demanding in unsaturated transport models since they need to retain the wetting-drying history of the system. The pumping errors in these models need to be eliminated for correct simulation of cyclical systems (e.g. transport above a tidally forced watertable, infiltration and redistribution under periodic irrigation) if the soils exhibit significant hysteresis. A modification is made here to the PL method that allows it to be more readily applied to numerical models by eliminating the need to store a large number of soil moisture reversal points. The modified-PL method largely eliminates any artificial pumping error and so essentially retains the accuracy of the original PL approach. The modified-PL method is implemented in HYDRUS-1D (version 2.0), which is then used to simulate cyclic capillary fringe dynamics to show the influence of removing artificial pumping errors and to demonstrate the ease of implementation. Artificial pumping errors are shown to be significant for the soils and system characteristics used here in numerical experiments of transport above a fluctuating watertable. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Learning technologies are now a ubiquitous force in the higher education sector however we continue to pursue more inventive ways to use them for teaching and learning. Many teaching academics that seek to be innovative do not have access to a supportive technology innovation zone. The aim of this study was to investigate the articulated staff development needs of academics involved in a faculty based technology innovation project and create the conditions that would cultivate innovation. The study sought to find out how academics perceived they might best be assisted through their technology innovation process so that participants’ needs were incorporated into planning. A questionnaire was used to elicit background information about the academics’ experience, skills and self diagnosed skill deficits in this context. Participants were also requested to provide information about how they thought they would best acquire the skills given their time and other resource constraints. A modified Delphi Technique was utilised to achieve some consensus on what academics required to support technology innovation. Complemented by an enabling and empowering team based approach, the academics were provided with an innovation zone to achieve significant goals for the project.
