In this paper, we present a technique for equilibria characterization of activated carbon having slit-shaped pores. This method was first developed by Do (Do, D. D. A new method for the characterisation of micro-mesoporous materials. Presented at the International Symposium on New Trends in Colloid and Interface Science, September 24-26, 1998 Chiba, Japan) and applied by his group and other groups for characterization of pore size distribution (PSD) as well as adsorption equilibria determination of a wide range of hydrocarbons. It is refined in this paper and compared with the grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMG) simulation and density functional theory (DFT). The refined theory results in a good agreement between the pore filling pressure versus pore width and those obtained by GCMG and DFT. Furthermore, our local isotherms are qualitatively in good agreement with those obtained by the GCMC simulations. The main advantage of this method is that it is about 4 orders of magnitude faster than the GCMC simulations, making it suitable for optimization studies and design purposes. Finally, we apply our method and the GCMG in the derivation of the PSD of a commercial activated carbon. It was found that the PSD derived from our method is comparable to that derived from the GCMG simulations.

A comparison has been made between the spectroscopic properties of the laser dye rhodamine 6G (R6G) in mesostructured titanium dioxide (TiO2) and in ethanol. Steady-state excitation and emission techniques have been used to probe the dye-matrix interactions. We show that the TiO2-nanocomposite studied is a good host for R6G, as it allows high dye concentrations, while keeping dye molecules isolated, and preventing aggregation. Our findings have important implications in the context of solid state dye-lasers and microphotonic device applications. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We study here the adsorption of hexane on nanoporous MCM-41 silica at 303, 313, and 323 K, for various pore diameters between 2.40 and 4.24 nm. Adsorption equilibria, measured thermogravimetrically, show that all the isotherms, that are somewhat akin to those of type V, exhibit remarkably sharp capillary adsorption phase transition steps and are reversible. The position of the phase transition step gradually shifts from low to high relative pressure with an increase in the temperature as well as the pore sizes. The isosteric heats of adsorption derived from the equilibrium information using the Clapeyron equation reveal a gradual decrease with increasing adsorbed amount because of the surface heterogeneity but approach a constant value near the phase transition. A decrease in the pore size results in an increase in the isosteric heat of adsorption because of the increased dispersion forces. A simple strategy, based on the Broekhoff and De Boer adsorption theory, successfully interprets the hexane adsorption isotherms for the different pore size MCM-41 samples. The parameters of an empirical expression, used to represent the potential of interaction between the adsorbate and adsorbent, are obtained by fitting the monolayer region prior to capillary condensation and the experimental phase transition simultaneously, for some pore sizes. Subsequently, the parameters are used to predict the adsorption isotherm on other pore size samples, which showed good agreement with experimental data.

Mesostructured titania thin films were prepared by an evaporation-induced self-assembly process. The highly acidic sot precursors contained titanium(IV) tetraisopropoxide (TTIP) as a titanium source, a tri-block copolymer Pluronic P123 as a template, and acetylacetonate and HCl as hydrolysis inhibitors. Characteristics of the resultant titania thin films were studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, N-2-adsorption/desorption analysis, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). XRD and TEM investigations on the as-synthesised films revealed the appearance of cubic-like, pseudohexagonal, and lamellar mesophases; depending on the amount of water in the sols of film precursors. Template removal by a calcination process yields high surface area (320-360 m(2)/g) mesoporous materials with crystalline anatase frameworks. Water content also influences the degree of anatase crystallinity of the calcined films. Higher water content resulted in improved anatase crystallinity. These nanostructured materials are of interest for photocatalysts, pbotoelectrochemical solar cells and other photonic devices. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Cassava rhizome was catalytically pyrolysed at 500 °C using analytical pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) in order to investigate the effect of catalysts on bio-oil properties. The catalysts studied were zeolite ZSM-5, two aluminosilicate mesoporous materials Al-MCM-41 and Al-MSU-F, and a proprietary commercial catalyst alumina-stabilised ceria MI-575. The influence of catalysts on pyrolysis products was observed through the yields of aromatic hydrocarbons, phenols, lignin-derived compounds, carbonyls, methanol and acetic acid. Results showed that all the catalysts produced aromatic hydrocarbons and reduced oxygenated lignin derivatives, thus indicating an improvement of bio-oil heating value and viscosity. Among the catalysts, ZSM-5 was the most active to all the changes in pyrolysis products. In addition, all the catalysts with the exception of MI-575 enhanced the formation of acetic acid. This is clearly a disadvantage with respect to the level of pH in the liquid bio-fuel.

The adsorption and diffusion of mixed hydrocarbon components in silicalite have been studied using molecular dynamic simulation methods. We have investigated the effect of molecular loadings and temperature on the diffusional behavior of both pure and mixed alkane components. For binary mixtures with components of similar sizes, molecular diffusional behavior in the channels was noticed to be reversed as loading is increased. This behavior was noticeably absent for components of different sizes in the mixture. Methane molecules in the methane/propane mixture have the highest diffusion coefficients across the entire loading range. Binary mixtures containing ethane molecules prove more difficult to separate compared to other binary components. In the ternary mixture, however, ethane molecules diffuse much faster at 400 K in the channel with a tendency to separate out quickly from other components. © 2005 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Mesoporous silica SBA-15 was synthesised by the true liquid crystal templating method, yielding a material with reduced microporosity compared with that produced by the more conventional liquid crystal templating route. Further advancements allow the generation of metal nanoparticle-doped SBA-15 materials with well-defined metal particle sizes, which posses potential as catalytic systems. © 2013 Elsevier Inc. MCM-41's limited hydrothermal stability has been often related to the hydrolysis of Si-O-Si bonds due to the low degree of condensation, its thin walls or a combination of them. In this work, evidence for an additional factor is provided; a physical effect that occurs during the drying of the hydrothermally treated calcined material due to the intense capillary stress exerted in water. Depending on both physical (i.e. mechanical) and chemical (i.e. hydrolysis) resistances, the structure undergoes differently. Three MCM-41 samples with different degree of condensation were investigated. The most remarkable results are found with un-aged TEOS based material, which gets fully disordered and shrunk for all applied hydrothermal temperatures in water. Comparison between water and a low-surface-tension-solvent drying revealed that capillarity is responsible for the loss of ordering (and shrinkage) at moderate hydrothermal temperatures. The material's structure is hexagonal and shrinkage-free under the low-surface-tension-solvent route. At a high hydrothermal temperature, hydrolysis is extensive and responsible for the loss of ordering. The other remarkable finding regards the aged MCM-41 mesostructure that maintains the hexagonal features at all applied temperatures in water, and it is more stable against capillarity at high temperature. The Na-metasilicate based material is mechanically very stable and gets disordered at high temperature due to hydrolysis.

A mild template removal of microcrystalline beta zeolite, based on Fenton chemistry, was optimized. Fenton detemplation was studied in terms of applicability conditions window, reaction rate and scale up. TGA and CHN elemental analysis were used to evaluate the detemplation effectiveness, while ICP, XRD, LPHR-Ar physisorption, and 27Al MAS NMR were applied to characterize the structure and texture of the resulting materials. The material properties were compared to calcination. By understanding the interplay of relevant parameters of the Fenton chemistry, the process can be optimized in order to make it industrially attractive for scale-up. The H2O2 utilization can be minimized down to 15 mL H2O2/g (88 °C, 30 ppm Fe), implying a high solid concentration and low consumption of H2O2. When Fe concentration must be minimized, values as low as 5 ppm Fe can be applied (88 °C, 30 mL H2O2/g), to achieve full detemplation. The reaction time to completeness can be reduced to 5 h when combining a Fe-oxalate catalyst with UV radiation. The protocol was scaled up to 100 times larger its original recipe. In terms of the material's properties, the scaled material is structurally comparable to the calcined counterpart (comparable Si/Al and XRD patterns), while it displays benefits in terms of texture and Al-coordination, the latter with full preservation of the tetrahedral Al

In this work a direct activation route of zeolites is assessed. It consists of NH4-exchanging the as-synthesized solids before removing the organic template. Calcination afterwards serves to combust the organic template and creates the Brønsted sites directly; thus applying merely a single thermal step. This method simplifies their activation and the material suffers less thermal stress. The approach was particularly effective for microcrystalline beta and ferrierite zeolites. Thorough investigation of the template content and materials' texture points out to three relevant effects that can explain the effective exchange process: partial removal of the template during exchange creates substantial microporosity (ferrierite), the remaining template is reorganized within the pores (ferrierite) and finally, void space can exist due to the non-perfect matching between the network and template (beta). This shorter method appears suited for microcrystalline zeolites; it was ineffective for crystalline MFI types. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The potential use of the solvothermal extraction (SE) as a preliminary step to calcination for detemplating SBA-15 mesophases is investigated; aiming to reduce the amount of organics to be burnt and thereby the corresponding structural shrinkage. A systematic study was carried out by soxhlet extraction on mesophases hydrothermally aged between 90 and 130 C. The mesophases containing variable amounts of template were then treated by calcination or pyrolysis/calcination. TGA was applied to quantify the template amount after the various treatments. The as obtained materials were characterized by SAXS and Ar ad/desorption for structural and textural information while 1H NMR gave information about the integrity of the as-recycled template. The study shows that solvothermal conditions remove considerably the template, typically from 50 to 10-20 wt.%, mainly extracted from the primary mesopores. Possible reuse of the extracted template is questionable as it is poor in polyethyleneoxide compared to the synthesis block-copolymer, Pluronic P123. For all thermal protocols applied (direct calcination, calcination after solvent-extraction or pyrolysis/calcination after solvent extraction), the thermal shrinkage decreases with the aging temperature; that is consistent with the condensation degree of the silica. For each mesophase, it was found that the thermal shrinkage becomes less pronounced when the material is fully templated; thus the template can serve as structural support or can control the mass transfer of O2 and thereby the oxidation rate of the template burning. © 2013 Elsevier Inc. The mesoporous materials has been an special attention, among them was discovered in the 1990´s the mesoporous molecular sieve of SBA-15 type. The good features of the SBA- 15 makes this material very promising in catalysis, however, due to the absence of native active sites, it has low catalytic activity. In this way, different metals and oxides have been included in this molecular sieve as a means of introducing active sites and increase its catalytic activity. Among the oxides that are being researched, there is the niobium oxide, which presents strong acid sites and exists in abundance. Brazil is the largest producer of the mineral. On the other hand, the production of biofuels has been desired, but it requires the development of new catalysts for this purpose. The aim of this work was to develop silicate of niobium by impregnation and by new synthesis method for application in the cracking of moringa oil. The methodology consisted of inserting the niobium oxide either by postsynthesis process using wet impregnation and direct insertion. For direct insert a new method was developed for pH adjustment, being tested different pH, and the pH 2.2 was used different ratios of Si/Nb. The materials were characterized by different techniques such as: XRD, N2 adsorption, SEM, EDS, UV-visible, TG/DTG, DSC, TEM, acidity by thermodesorption of n-butilamine and FTIR. After this part of the catalysts developed by the two methods were tested in the thermocatalytic cracking of moringa oil, being used a simple distillation. All silicates of Niobium obtained showed a highly ordered structure, having high specific areas, good distribution of pore diameters, beyond present a morphology in the form of fibers. In the catalysts after synthesis was observed that the niobium inserted has so as octahedrally and tetrahedrally coordinated, demonstrating that there were also oxides formed on the external surface of SBA-15. The materials obtained in the direct synthesis are only tetrahedrally coordinated. The new synthesis method of pH adjusting by using the buffer solution for it, proved to be very efficient for the production of such materials, because the materials obtained showed characteristics and structures similar to the molecular sieve of SBA-15 type. Among the pH tested the material that presented better characteristics was synthesized at pH 2.2. The application of these materials in catalytic cracking showed a higher formation of organic liquids when compared to thermal cracking, in addition to significantly reducing the acidity and residues formed, demonstrating that the use of silicates of Niobium increases both the conversion and the selectivity of the products.
