The ionization dynamics of H2 + exposed to high-intensity, high-frequency, ultrashort laser pulses is investigated with two theoretical approaches. The time-dependent Schrödinger equation is solved by a direct numerical method, and a simple two-center interference-diffraction model is studied. The energy and angular distributions of the photoelectron for various internuclear distances and relative orientations between the internuclear axis of the molecule and the polarization of the field are calculated. The main features of the photoelectron spectrum pattern are described well by the interference-diffraction model, and excellent quantitative agreement between the two methods is found. The effect of quantal vibration on the photoelectron spectrum is also calculated. We find that vibrational average produces some broadening of the main features, but that the patterns remain clearly distinguishable.

Modulations in the excitability of spinal reflex pathways during passive rhythmic movements of the lower limb have been demonstrated by a number of previous studies [4]. Less emphasis has been placed on the role of supraspinal pathways during passive movement, and on tasks involving the upper limb. In the present study, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) was delivered to subjects while undergoing passive flexion-extension movements of the contralateral wrist. Motor evoked potentials (MEPs) of flexor carpi radialis (FCR) and abductor pollicus brevis (APB) muscles were recorded. Stimuli were delivered in eight phases of the movement cycle during three different frequencies of movement. Evidence of marked modulations in pathway excitability was found in the MEP amplitudes of the FCR muscle, with responses inhibited and facilitated from static values in the extension and flexion phases, respectively. The results indicated that at higher frequencies of movement there was greater modulation in pathway excitability. Paired-pulse TMS (sub-threshold conditioning) at short interstimulus intervals revealed modulations in the extent of inhibition in MEP amplitude at high movement frequencies. In the APE muscle, there was some evidence of phasic modulations of response amplitude, although the effects were less marked than those observed in FCR. It is speculated that these modulatory effects are mediated via Ia afferent pathways and arise as a consequence of the induced forearm muscle shortening and lengthening. Although the level at which this input influences the corticomotoneuronal pathway is difficult to discern, a contribution from cortical regions is suggested. Spectra of forward emitted second harmonic light from laser interaction with filamentary plasmas have been experimentally studied. Rather regular modulations in the frequency domain have been observed into overall red-shifted spectra. The observed spectral features are consistent with self-phase-modulation of the intense laser light in growing filaments. A model accounts for this effect.

Relevant to laser based electron/ion accelerations, a single shot second harmonic generation frequency resolved optical gating (FROG) system has been developed to characterize laser pulses (80 J, ∼600 fs) incident on and transmitted through nanofoil targets, employing relay imaging, spatial filter, and partially coated glass substrates to reduce spatial nonuniformity and B-integral. The device can be completely aligned without using a pulsed laser source. Variations of incident pulse shape were measured from durations of 613 fs (nearly symmetric shape) to 571 fs (asymmetric shape with pre- or postpulse). The FROG measurements are consistent with independent spectral and autocorrelation measurements. © 2010 American Institute of Physics.

Chaotic dynamics of directly modulated semiconductor lasers have been studied extensively over the last two decades because of their application in secure optical communication. However, chaos is generally suppressed in such systems when the nonlinear gain reduction factor is above 0.01 which is very much smaller than the reported values in semiconductors like InGaAsP. In this paper we show that by giving an optoelectronic feedback with appropriate delay one can increase the range of the values of the gain reduction factor for which chaos can be observed. Numerical studies show that negative feedback is more efficient in producing chaotic dynamics.

This dissertation examined whether a hearing impairment of the auditory end-organ has the same or a differential effect on the place and periodicity processes. Differential sensitivities for four normally hearing listeners and for both ears of five patients with unilateral Meniere’s disease were measured for tonal frequency and rate of sinusoidally amplitude-modulated noise at common frequencies and rates of the stimulus.

We investigated the IR absorption spectrum of (CH3OH)-C-13 around the frequency of the 10R(20) CO2 laser line. We found two absorption lines which can be excited by 10R(20) and studied the FIR laser emissions excited by this pump line using a waveguide CO2 laser of 300 MHz tunability: We report two new FIR laser lines of large offset, not previously observed due to their weakness and closeness to other stronger lines. We measured the frequencies of five FIR laser lines for the first time by an accurate heterodyne technique and present the complete assignments of the IR-FIR laser systems relative to this pump line. Furthermore we present new frequency values for two FIR laser lines whose frequencies had been previously wrongly measured. Copyright (C) 1997 Elsevier B.V. Ltd.

We report 18 new laser lines from (CH3OH)-C-13 generated in an optically pumped far-infrared laser; the laser lines are in the range of 54.2-420 mu m and are all characterized in wavelength, polarization relative to the pumping CO2 radiation, and pump offset relative to the CO2 center frequency, the frequencies of seven of these new lines along with 10 previously reported lines were measured by an accurate heterodyne technique, mixing them in a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) point contact diode, with another laser line of known frequency.

We present the results of an intracavity Stark spectroscopy experiment on the fundamental state of (CD3OH)-C-13. We use an optically pumped hybrid waveguide FIR laser, CH2F2 as active molecule, and (CD3OH)-C-13 as absorbent molecule. No Brewster window is needed to separate the lasing gas from the absorbing deuterated methanol. An absorption line is assigned as E(l) symmetry (n, K, J): (1,4,18) --> (1,5,18) and its frequency is measured as 63.08631 cm(-1) with a precision of a few parts in 10(7); two more absorptions are reported and a tentative assignment for one of them.

We report the discovery of 57 new fir laser lines from (CD3OH)-C-13 molecule optically pumped by a waveguide CO2 laser of 300 MHz tunability. For all lines, precise frequency offset measurements between the CO2 line center and the center of the absorbing (CD3OH)-C-13 line were performed using the transferred Lamb-Dip technique. We have also measured directly the frequency of seven FIR laser lines by heterodyning with already known laser lines. We present a complete list of all known laser lines (134) and frequency measurements (24) for this molecule.

We report the frequency measurements of 18 optically pumped far-infrared (FIR) laser lines generated from CD3OH and (CH3OH)-C-13. We use the heterodyne technique of mixing FIR laser radiations and microwave radiation on a metal-insulator-metal point-contact tunnel diode to determine the FIR laser frequencies. Two FIR laser systems, consisting of CO2 waveguide pump lasers and Fabry-Perot FIR laser cavities, were used as optical sources. (C) 1997 Optical Society of America.

With Hg-199 atoms confined in an optical lattice trap in the Lamb-Dicke regime, we obtain a spectral line at 265.6 nm for which the FWHM is similar to 15 Hz. Here we lock an ultrastable laser to this ultranarrow S-1(0) - P-3(0) clock transition and achieve a fractional frequency instability of 5.4 x 10(-15) / root tau for tau <= 400 s. The highly stable laser light used for the atom probing is derived from a 1062.6 nm fiber laser locked to an ultrastable optical cavity that exhibits a mean drift rate of -6.0 x 10(-17) s-(1) (-16.9 mHzs(-1) at 282 THz) over a six month period. A comparison between two such lasers locked to independent optical cavities shows a flicker noise limited fractional frequency instability of 4 x 10(-16) per cavity.
