The king's champion: re-enacting Arthurian romance at the English coronation banquet

Recent scholarship has emphasised the extent to which historical events are reflected in medieval romance. This paper seeks to draw attention to an instance where that relationship appears to have been inverted and a romance motif was carefully recreated at a particularly important event in the historical world. From the fourteenth century onwards, a mounted knight ceremonially rode into the English coronation banquet and issued a challenge to all assembled. The visual detail of the ritual strikingly echoes that of the romance motif of the “intruder at the feast”. This motif crops up in numerous romances, and is particularly associated with Arthurian narratives where it usually serves as a catalyst for adventure, providing the court and the king with an opportunity to justify their authority and reputation. This paper analyses the precise nature of the historical ritual and explores how the romance resonances of the ceremony at the coronation feast could be used to underpin political authority and courtly identity. In doing so, it seeks to underscore the centrality of Arthurian romance to English monarchical self-imagining and the symbolic power which could be ascribed to the genre's themes and conventions.

The seaweed flora of Admiralty Bay, King George Island, Antarctic

Admiralty Bay is located on the western side of King George Island. Although several research teams of different nationalities have carried out surveys in the region for decades, there are only two publications dealing with the seaweed flora of the bay. Here, we report on a taxonomic survey of the seaweeds we collected during the 25th Brazilian Antarctic Expedition (December 2006/November 2007). We discovered 42 species (21 Rhodophyta, 14 Phaeophyceae, and 7 Chlorophyta), corresponding to an increase of about 31% in the seaweed biodiversity hitherto known for the region. Considering that the Antarctic Peninsula, adjacent to King George Island seems to be one of the most rapidly warming spots on the planet, this kind of survey may provide a valuable tool for detecting eventual changes in seaweed biodiversity.

Examensuppsats inom Ljudproduktion, Högskolan Dalarna, Akademin för språk och medier, Falun. I denna uppsats undersöktes filmljudet i dramafilmen The King´s Speech. Detta för att ta reda på vilka funktioner filmljudet fyller i de valda sekvenserna ur nämnda film, samt hur ljudet är placerat i filmens flerkanalsmix. Filmen granskades med hjälp av en audio-visuell analys. Denna metod går ut på att ljudet och bilden undersöks separat, för att sedan åter kombineras och analyseras som helhet. Den audio-visuella analysmetod som använts kommer från ljudteoretikern Michel Chion, och kallas Masking. Resultatet av den audio-visuella analysen pekade mot att ljudets huvudsakliga funktioner var att skapa en realistisk skildring av karaktärer och omgivningar, skapa en känsla av närvaro, samt att skapa och bibehålla olika perspektiv i den narrativa världen. Den stora majoriteten av ljud visade sig vara placerade i centerkanalen, medan främst ickediegetisk musik och ambiensljud var placerade i front- och surroundkanalerna. Detta kanalanvändande tycktes gynna de funna funktionerna, främst genom att bidra till känslan av närvaro och realism, genom att omsluta filmpubliken med ambienta ljud.

Assessment of value creation in private equity: the acquisition of Burger King by 3G Capital

This thesis elaborates the creation of value in private equity and in particular analyzes value creation in 3G Capital’s acquisition of Burger King. In this sense, a specific model is applied that composes value creation into several drivers, in order to answer the question of how value creation can be addressed in private equity investments. Although previous research by Achleitner et al. (2010) introduced a specific model that addresses value creation in private equity, the respective model was neither applied to an individual company, nor linked to indirect drivers that explain the dynamics and rationales for the creation of value. In turn this paper applies the quantitative model to an ongoing private equity investment and thereby provides different extensions to turn the model into a better forecasting model for ongoing investments, instead of only analyzing a deal that has already been divested from an ex post perspective. The chosen research approach is a case study about the Burger King buyout that first includes an extensive review about the current status of academic literature, second a quantitative calculation and qualitative interpretation of different direct value drivers, third a qualitative breakdown of indirect drivers, and lastly a recapitulating discussion about value creation and value drivers. Presenting a very successful private equity investment and elaborately demonstrating the dynamics and mechanisms that drive value creation in this case, provides important implications for other private equity firms as well as public firms in order to develop their proprietary approach towards value creation.

Aspectos morfológicos do fruto, da semente e desenvolvimento pós-seminal de faveira (Clitoria fairchildiana R. A. Howard. - Fabaceae)

O presente trabalho teve por objetivo descrever a morfologia dos frutos, das sementes e o desenvolvimento pós-seminal de faveira (Clitoria fairchildiana R. A. Howard. - Fabaceae). Os frutos e as sementes foram caracterizados quanto à forma e dimensões. Periodicamente, unidades representativas de cada fase de germinação foram retiradas para as descrições morfológicas. Os frutos são do tipo legume, deiscentes e de coloração marrom. As sementes são exalbuminosas, de forma orbicular e achatada, com tegumento de coloração castanho-esverdeada. O hilo tem forma elíptica, homocromo e de tamanho pequeno em relação à semente. Os cotilédones são livres, de coloração verde, maciços e plano-convexos e o embrião é invaginado. O início do desenvolvimento pós-seminal é marcado pelo rompimento do tegumento e emissão da raiz primária, glabra, de coloração amarelo-esverdeada e de forma cilíndrica. Posteriormente, observa-se o desenvolvimento das raízes secundárias, levemente esbranquiçadas, curtas e filiformes. em seguida, o crescimento do hipocótilo proporciona a emergência dos cotilédones e da plúmula acima do substrato. O epicótilo alonga-se e, em seguida, observa-se a expansão dos eófilos, simples, opostos, com tricomas simples e esparsos, pecíolos curtos com estípulas em sua base. Posteriormente ao desenvolvimento dos eófilos, ocorre a formação do segundo par de folhas, alternas, trifolioladas, estipuladas e com estipelas na base dos peciólulos.
