La letra con sangre entra La emancipada (1863) de Miguel Riofrío, primera novela ecuatoriana (Estudios)

Este ensayo revisa elementos presentes en La emancipada (1863), texto que funda la novela ecuatoriana, y que representa por primera vez el territorio de esta nación. Revisa las relaciones de esta novela con otros discursos, como el refrán tradicional que afirma «La letra con sangre entra», en referencia a la dominación y el control ejercido por las élites sobre sujetos subalternos (en este caso los indios y las mujeres). Resalta el hecho de que la protagonista da validez a un texto ajeno, al poner su firma en una carta redactada por su padre, aunque escribe en el reverso del papel su propio mensaje, éste no llega con claridad a su destino. El motivo con el que se inicia la literatura ecuatoriana es revelador de otros elementos que contribuyeron a la formación de las naciones hispanoamericanos americanas en el siglo XIX.

Liberalismo radical en Colombia (1863-1885) y Ecuador (1895-1915)

Con el presente trabajo pretendo revisar el concepto de liberalismo radical como movimiento político en su configuración estatal de Colombia y Ecuador. Ambos países comparten, para su fortuna, vidas políticas paralelas que pudieron confluir en su historia, formación y política. El primer capítulo se ocupa de la noción de radicalismo e función del liberalismo y el conservadurismo; en el capítulo segundo se desarrollan aquellas condiciones necesarias que vieron nacer al liberalismo radical y le propiciaron su oportunidad en el poder; finalmente, el capítulo tercero se concentra en ilustrar las acciones de los gobiernos radicales, sus protagonistas y su coherencia conforme obedecen a una doctrina liberal radical. Pongo de presente no solo las coincidencias políticas que permitieron el surgimiento de una fuerte corriente liberal radical sino que también destacó las consecuencias positivas y negativas que pudieron dejar sus gobiernos en la praxis y la memoria de sus pueblos. Sin duda, su momento histórico funda en cada nación una esperanza social importante y una revolución que marcaría un devenir muy favorable a los estados nacientes y su reformulación de la forma colonial de administración y la política en manos de una fuerte tradición criolla o militarista. Creo que el liberalismo radical, que con sus matices gobernó en Colombia y Ecuador, puso de presente al individuo como protagonista de la historia y a las sociedades que éstos conformaban. También lucha contra las instituciones coloniales que requieren de lo religioso para sobrevivir. Incuba, en la formación y la educación, el proyecto genuino de un hombre moderno, racional y autónomo que puede construir su futuro y autodeterminarse. Lamentablemente, fracasa en su férreo espíritu de combatir de manera compulsiva a la semilla de religión que había sido legada tres siglos antes pero sienta el Estado laico que permitirá la consolidación estatal con un definitivo quiebre de la política colonial y en la aplicación de un igualitarismo que pueda regular la sociedad naciente.

Olfactory attractiveness of mixtures of some host plant and conspecific semiochemicals to the banana weevil Cosmopolites sordidus (Germar, 1824)

A simple "Y" shaped olfactometer was used in laboratory studies on the olfactory attractiveness of mixtures in various proportions of industrial analogues of some host plant and conspecific-based semiochemicals, or their combinations with banana rhizome, to the banana weevil. The aim was to identify factors that influence their attractiveness to the weevil, and consider the possibility for their use as lures for trapping the weevil in the field. Cosmopolites sordidus was attracted to the mixtures at specific concentrations and proportions of constituent chemicals. 6-methylhept-5-en-2-one was only attractive on its own at 1 µl/100 ml and in mixture with 4- mercaptophenol, but not at 10 µl, 0.01 µl, or in combination with banana rhizome. 4-mercaptohpenol and 2-n-butylfuran, which were compatible with most host plant-based chemicals and were attractive as a mixture, were perceived to be key elements in the composition of attractants to the weevil. It was concluded that in addition to the composition, other factors that may determine the attractiveness or otherwise of a mixture to C. sordidus are the proportions and concentrations of the constituent chemicals.

Taylor v Caldwell (1863)

A Landmark Case is one which stands out from other less remarkable cases. Landmark status is generally accorded because the case marks the beginning or the end of a course of legal development. Taylor v Caldwell is regarded as a landmark case because it marks the beginning of a legal development: the introduction of the doctrine of frustration into English contract law. This chapter explores the legal and historical background to the case to ascertain if it is a genuine landmark. A closer scrutiny reveals that while the legal significance of the case is exaggerated, the historical significance of the cases reveals an unknown irony: the case is a suitable landmark to the frustration of human endeavours. While the existence of the Surrey Music Hall was brief, it brought insanity, imprisonment, bankruptcy and death to its creators.

Parallel editing, multi-positionality and maximalism: cosmopolitan effects as explored in some art works by Melanie Jackson and Vivienne Dick

Garfield produces a critique of neo-minimalist art practice by demonstrating how the artist Melanie Jackson’s Some things you are not allowed to send around the world (2003 and 2006) and the experimental film-maker Vivienne Dick’s Liberty’s booty (1980) – neither of which can be said to be about feeling ‘at home’ in the world, be it as a resident or as a nomad – examine global humanity through multi-positionality, excess and contingency, and thereby begin to articulate a new cosmopolitan relationship with the local – or, rather, with many different localities – in one and the same maximalist sweep of the work. ‘Maximalism’ in Garfield’s coinage signifies an excessive overloading (through editing, collage, and the sheer density of the range of the material) that enables the viewer to insert themselves into the narrative of the work. In the art of both Jackson and Dick Garfield detects a refusal to know or to judge the world; instead, there is an attempt to incorporate the complexities of its full range into the singular vision of the work, challenging the viewer to identify what is at stake.

Taxonomic review of Haliclystus antarcticus Pfeffer, 1889 (Stauromedusae, Staurozoa, Cnidaria), with remarks on the genus Haliclystus Clark, 1863

Difficulties concerning the taxonomy of stauromedusae are long known, and there is a clear need for taxonomic revision of the genus Haliclystus, as well as the reevaluation of some species. Haliclystus antarcticus Pfeffer, 1889 is recorded from Admiralty Bay, King George Island, Antarctic Peninsula. Due to the lack of detailed information on this species, we provide a redescription, presenting new data on the cnidome, morphometry, geographical distribution and intraspecific variation. Based on these characters, we propose that our specimens and Haliclystus auricula from Chile and Argentina are synonymous and should be classified as H. antarcticus. We also review the worldwide distribution of the genus Haliclystus Clark, 1863 and discuss taxonomic issues, concluding that some characters traditionally used in the taxonomy of the group should be used cautiously.

Dyrbara experimenter : Införandet av modernare gatubelysning i Falu stad 1863-1888

Syftet med uppsatsen är att belysa en aspekt av Faluns omvandling till modern stad. Den del i denna modernisering som vidrörs i uppsatsen är införandet av elektrisk gatubelysning. Frågeställningarna i uppsatsen rör diskussionen som föregicks i stadsförvaltningen då man införde elektrisk gatubelysning i Falun och anledningarna till införandet av elektrisk belysning. Materialet som har använts för undersökningen är protokoll från stadsfullmäktige och drätselkammare i Falun under perioden 1863-1888. Gatubelysningen i Falun har sedan 1849 varit i stadsförvaltningens regi. Flera olika metoder av gatubelysning har sedan dess tillämpats och ännu fler metoder har diskuterats men aldrig kommit till stånd. Denna uppsats rör också anledningarna till gatubelysning i Falun vilka var flera utöver att få gatorna belysta för nattvandrarna. Stävjandet av brottsligheten var en av dem, estetiken en annan men även ett självändamål tycks också skönjbart. Byggandet av den moderna staden krävde moderna metoder och material. Elektriciteten som metod för belysning av gator var i högsta grad modernt och Falun var bland de första städerna som antog elektrisk gatubelysning i Sverige.
