The sediments recovered on ODP Leg 104 have been reported to be characterized by hiatuses. The hiatuses were defined by biostratigraphy and were believed to be caused by erosion related to temporary changes of bottom current composition and velocity. They have been associated with major paleoenvironmental changes, reorganization of global deep water production, and increased bottom water flows. Because of the importance of hiatuses for ongoing research, we decided to closely investigate the sedimentation history for the most significant Pliocene and Miocene biostratigraphic hiatuses by sedimentologic and geochemical means. The sedimentologic studies include clay mineral distributions, grain size data, and organic carbon concentrations. The geochemical studies include determination of 87/86Sr ratios, 10Be and Ir concentrations. The results of the sedimentologic studies suggest either that paleoenvironmental changes associated with hiatuses are not represented in the preserved sediments, or that the hiatuses are an artifact of interpretation of the biostratigraphic data. Strontium isotopes indicate continuous sedimentation for the interval investigated at Site 642, an interpretation confirmed by the steady decline in 10Be. 87/86Sr ratios in the interval from above and below proposed hiatuses H 2.2/2.3 and H2.1/2.2 at Site 643 display stronger changes with depth than expected by steady sedimentation. Ir data for this same interval indicate reduced sedimentation rates. Combining both, sedimentologic and geochemical evidence, the proposed hiatuses could not be confirmed and may represent preservation artifacts.

The Toba lake event, the Australasian microtektite event, and the Cretaceous/Paleogene boundary were analyzed on the basis of foraminifers, carbonate content, trace elements, and spherules (microtektites). The Toba ash event, recovered in Hole 758C, may have had minor influences on the foraminiferal populations. The Australasian tektite event has probably some influence on foraminiferal ecology, because the larger specimens become scarce just above the microtektite layer. Microtektites recovered from Hole 758B closely resemble spherules recovered from several Cretaceous/Paleogene boundary localities in North America. The Cretaceous/Paleogene spherules, however, are usually larger and are completely altered to goyazite in the terrestrial environment and to smectite in a marine environment. The Cretaceous/Paleogene boundary of Hole 752B does not show obvious anomalous trace-element concentrations, and iridium concentrations are below our detection limits. The trace-element pattern is dominated by the alternation of chalk with volcanic ash layers above the Cretaceous/Paleogene boundary.

An Ir anomaly of 61 ng/cm**2 was found in Deep Sea Drilling Project Hole 577B at the same stratigraphic level as the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary defined by nannoplankton. This close correspondence supports the asteroid-impact theory for the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary extinctions.

Ocean Drilling Program Leg 135 backarc basin lavas are characterized by anomalously high Au contents (1.0-11.4 ppb) and strongly fractionated relative platinum group element (PGE) abundances (Pd/Ir ratio, approximately 100). The Rh and Ir contents are very low, ranging from below detection (approximately 0.02 ppb) to 0.08 ppb. The Pd and Pt contents range from <0.3 to 4 ppb. Rh, Pd, and Pt values are consistently and significantly higher in Site 836 and 839 samples relative to those from Sites 834 and 835. Major, trace, and rare earth element (REE) data suggest Sites 836 and 839 have a more pronounced arc signature than Sites 834 and 835. No correlation exists between noble metal abundance and indices of alteration or fractionation (e.g., loss on ignition (LOI), Mg#, and Cr or Ni contents), suggesting that measured values and ratios are primary and reflect characteristics of the mantle source. The evaluation of Leg 135 noble metal data with respect to potential mantle-source components is hindered by the lack of data on magmas derived from such sources. However, analyses of the limited available data for the different magma types suggest that the characteristic enrichment of Leg 135 lavas in Au, relative to Pd and Cu, cannot be derived solely from simple MORB-type or ocean-island-type mantle, or mantle depleted by a previous melt extraction event. The Au-enriched signature of the Lau basin lavas could, however, be produced through the addition of a sedimentary component from the downgoing slab. Separation of Au from the PGE occurs within oceanic hydrothermal systems and gold values of the resultant precipitates are 2-3 orders of magnitude higher than other oceanic crustal components. Even small additions of this component from the downgoing oceanic crust to a supra-subduction zone mantle melt could account for the high mean Au/Pd ratios of the Leg 135 samples (Sites 834 and 835, Au/Pd = 5.04; Sites 836 and 839, Au/Pd = 2.26).

On September 9th 2014, an intensive drifter deployment was carried out in the Strait of Gibraltar. In the frame of the EU MED Program MEDESS-4MS, the MEDESS-GIB experiment consisted of the deployment of 35 satellite tracked drifters, mostly of CODE-type, equipped with temperature sensor sampling at a rate of 30 minutes. Drifters were distributed along and on both sides of the Strait of Gibraltar. The MEDESS-GIB deployment plan was designed as to ensure quasi-synoptic spatial coverage. To this end, 4 boats covering an area of about 680 NM2 in 6 hours were coordinated. As far as authors know, this experiment is the most important exercise in the area in terms of number of drifters released. Collected satellite-tracked data along drifter trajectories have been quality controlled and processed to build the here presented MEDESS-GIB data set.

THE chemical, mineralogical and isotopic characteristics of deposits at the Cretaceous/Tertiary (K/T) boundary are suggestive of a large impact event, the prime candidate (Sharpton et al., 1992, doi:10.1038/359819a0) being the Chicxulub crater in Yucatan, Mexico. Spinel-bearing spherules, which may be associated with such impacts, have been reported (Smit and Romein, 1985, doi:10.1016/0012-821X(85)90019-6) at several K/T boundary sites worldwide, but their origin is still uncertain. We have examined the spinel-bearing material recovered from K/T boundary deposits at site 577 in the Pacific Ocean (Heath et al., 1985, doi:10.2973/dsdp.proc.86.104.1985) and find two distinct populations of particles: spherules with dendritic spinel textures dispersed throughout the grains and irregularly shaped fragments with spinels essentially confined to the rim. The morphology and composition of the particles are characteristic of melted and partially melted meteoritic ablation debris, but their location is difficult to reconcile with an impact on the Yucatan peninsula, some 10,000 km away. We suggest instead that the spinel-bearing particles at site 577 are derived from the impact of a 2-km asteroid in the Pacific Ocean, and that several accretionary events of this type are required to explain the global distribution of spinel-bearing spherules at the K/T boundary.

Chemical and isotopic data for rare massive and semimassive sulfide samples cored at Site 1189 (Roman Ruins, PACMANUS) suggest their genetic relationship with sulfide chimneys at the seafloor. Sand collected from the hammer drill after commencement of Hole 1189B indicates that at least the lower section of the cased interval was occupied by material similar to the stockwork zone cored from 31 to ~100 meters below seafloor (mbsf) in this hole, but with increased content of barite, sphalerite, and lead-bearing minerals. Fractional crystallization of ascending hydrothermal fluid involving early precipitation of pyrite may explain vertical mineralogical and chemical zoning within the stockwork conduit and the high base and precious metal contents of Roman Ruins chimneys. A mineralized volcaniclastic unit cored deep in Hole 1189A possibly represents the lateral fringe of the conduit system. Lead isotope ratios in the sulfides differ slightly but significantly from those of fresh lavas from Pual Ridge, implying that at least some of the Pb within the Roman Ruins hydrothermal system derived from a deeper, more radiogenic source than the enclosing altered volcanic rocks.

Seventeen basalts from Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 183 to the Kerguelen Plateau (KP) were analyzed for the platinum-group elements (PGEs: Ir, Ru, Rh, Pt, and Pd), and 15 were analyzed for trace elements. Relative concentrations of the PGEs ranged from ~0.1 (Ir, Ru) to ~5 (Pt) times primitive mantle. These relatively high PGE abundances and fractionated patterns are not accounted for by the presence of sulfide minerals; there are only trace sulfides present in thin-section. Sulfur saturation models applied to the KP basalts suggest that the parental magmas may have never reached sulfide saturation, despite large degrees of partial melting (~30%) and fractional crystallization (~45%). First order approximations of the fractionation required to produce the KP basalts from an ~30% partial melt of a spinel peridotite were determined using the PELE program. The model was adapted to better fit the physical and chemical observations from the KP basalts, and requires an initial crystal fractionation stage of at least 30% olivine plus Cr-spinel (49:1), followed by magma replenishment and fractional crystallization (RFC) that included clinopyroxene, plagioclase, and titanomagnetite (15:9:1). The low Pd values ([Pd/Pt]_pm < 1.7) for these samples are not predicted by currently available Kd values. These Pd values are lowest in samples with relatively higher degrees of alteration as indicated by petrographic observations. Positive anomalies are a function of the behavior of the PGEs; they can be reproduced by Cr-spinel, and titanomagnetite crystallization, followed by titanomagnetite resorption during the final stages of crystallization. Our modeling shows that it is difficult to reproduce the PGE abundances by either depleted upper or even primitive mantle sources. Crustal contamination, while indicated at certain sites by the isotopic compositions of the basalts, appears to have had a minimal affect on the PGEs. The PGE abundances measured in the Kerguelen Plateau basalts are best modeled by melting a primitive mantle source to which was added up to 1% of outer core material, followed by fractional crystallization of the melt produced. This reproduces both the abundances and patterns of the PGEs in the Kerguelen Plateau basalts. An alternative model for outer core PGE abundances requires only 0.3% of outer core material to be mixed into the primitive mantle source. While our results are clearly model dependent, they indicate that an outer core component may be present in the Kerguelen plume source.

Neutron activation analyses of iridium and other chemical elements were performed across a 1-m-thick, partly nonbioturbated, clay-rich interval at the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary in ODP Hole 738C. The results show that the boundary interval holds one of the highest Ir enrichments (320 ng Ir/cm2) of all known Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary layers. Iridium concentrations are highest (18 ppb Ir, whole-rock samples) a few centimeters above the base of the clayrich interval and gradually tail off upsection. Compared with background levels the most Ir-rich interval also shows strongly enhanced concentrations of Cr (215 ppm) and slightly elevated Co concentrations (13 ppm). The Ir-rich interval shows low As (< 15 ppm) and Sb (<0.8 ppm) concentrations, a fact that is congruent with absence of abundant authigenic sulfides in the sediment. Irregularly distributed Fe enrichments and a greenish gray color of the Fe-rich intervals may indicate the presence of glauconitic clay minerals and suboxic, slightly reducing conditions during deposition. Rare earth element (REE) abundance patterns change considerably across the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary interval, reflecting either a change in Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary seawater REE composition or the occurrence of different REE fractionation processes due to changing depositional environment. Element-vs.-element ratios of Hf, Ta, Th, U, Cs, and Sc are similar between the most Ir-rich layers of the boundary section and other levels with lower Ir concentrations. This may imply that the clay fraction of the Ir-rich layers of the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary interval is made up predominantly of locally derived material. Calculated calcite-free abundances of Hf, Ta, Th, U, Cs, and Sc, on the other hand, are reconcilable with an extraneous origin of the bulk of the clay in the most Ir-rich layers. The Ir in the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary clay-rich zone in Hole 738C is most likely derived from an earth-impacting asteroid; however, the origin of the clay-rich zone remains enigmatic.

It was found out that the lower parts of slopes of the Untersee mountain valley (East Antarctica) were locally covered with lithificates (both carbonate-free and carbonate-poor). They occur in three modes: crusts, films, and impregnates. All of them cover Late Pleistocene moraine material and consist of mixture of lacustrine sedimentary material and filling material of moraines. A mechanism of their genesis is offered.
