Clinical research: how to be involved

The Northern Ireland Clinical Research Network (NICRN) undertakes research in a range of medical fields, which have recently been expanded to include mental health. The NICRN is part of a UK-wide initiative to provide opportunities for patients and clinicians to participate in high-quality clinical research.This suite of leaflets provides both the public and clinical researchers with an introduction to the work of the NICRN. They provide an overview of the NICRN's goals and highlight what the network can offer to patients, carers and researchers. Each leaflet includes specific details on the NICRN's work in that area and reasons why clinical research plays such a vital role in improving the delivery of health and social care

Getting to know your baby

This leaflet is for women who are pregnant and describes how they can start connecting with their baby. It explains what babies need to feel safe and secure and will help new mothers get off to a good start with feeding and caring for their babies.

Clostridium difficile infection

This leaflet provides healthcare patients, their families and carers with comprehensive information on Clostridium difficile (C. diff) infection. It provides some background on the infection�and highlights a range of key factors, including the symptoms to look out for, common causes of contamination, the appropriate course of action should you become infected, and possible treatment options. It also offers advice to visitors and carers on precautions and rules they should follow when in the presence of a patient with C. diff infection.

This�leaflet is part of an extension of the cleanyourhands campaign, aimed at preventing the spread of healthcare associated infections (HCAIs) in community healthcare settings including primary care and dental services, residential and nursing homes (including independent sector homes), hospices and independent clinics/hospitals. It describes the campaign and outlines the campaign resources.

Rubella and pregnancy - What you need to know (English and two translations)

This leaflet for women provides updated information on rubella and how to get vaccinated so it is not passed on during pregnancy.Rubella, otherwise known as German measles, can be very serious for the unborn baby in the first three months of pregnancy and can cause damage to the sight, hearing, heart and brain, a condition known as congenital rubella syndrome (CRS).Infection can be prevented by the MMR vaccine, which protects the mother and her unborn baby.

Newborn blood spot screening (English and 10 translations)

The newborn blood spot pre-screening information leaflet for parents has been revised to include information about sickle cell disorders (SCD) and medium chain�acyl coA dehydrogenase deficiency (MCADD) family history. The revised pre-screening leaflet should be given to all pregnant women by 30 weeks gestation and reissued to parents following delivery, before day five.Further information about screening and the care of children with SCD is available at:
