This paper presents an application study into the use of a bi-directional link with the human nervous system by means of an implant, positioned through neurosurgery. Various applications are described including the interaction of neural signals with an articulated hand, a group of cooperative autonomous robots and to control the movement of a mobile platform. The microelectrode array implant itself is described in detail. Consideration is given to a wider range of possible robot mechanisms, which could interact with the human nervous system through the same technique.

Enchantment is a term frequently used by human geographers to express delight, wonder or that which cannot be simply explained. However, it is a concept that has yet to be subject to sustained critique, specifically how it can be used to progress geographic thought and praxis. This paper makes sense of, and space for, the unintelligibility of enchantment in order to encourage a less repressed, more cheerful way of engaging with the geographies of the world. We track back through our disciplinary heritage to explore how geographers have employed enchantment as a force through which the world inspires affective attachment. We review the terrain of the debate surrounding recent geographical engagements with enchantment, focusing on the nature of being critical and the character of critique in human geography, offering a new ‘enchanted’ stance to our geographical endeavours. We argue that the moment of enchantment has not passed with the current challenging climate; if anything, it is more pressing.

Introduction: Wound healing process involves the activation of extracellular matrix components, remodeling enzymes, cellular adhesion molecules, growth factors, cytokines and chemokines genes. However, the molecular patterns underlying the healing process periapical environment remain unclear. Here we hypothesized that endodontic infection might result in an imbalance in the expression of wound healing genes involved in the pathogenesis of periapical lesions. Furthermore, we suggest that differential expression of wound healing markers in active and latent granulomas could account for different clinical outcomes for such lesions. Methods: Study samples consisted of 93 periapical granulomas collected after endodontic surgeries and 24 healthy periodontal ligament tissues collected from premolars extracted for orthodontic purposes as control samples. Of these, 10 periapical granulomas and 5 healthy periapical tissues were used for expression analysis of 84 wound healing genes by using a pathway-specific real-time polymerase chain reaction array. The remaining 83 granulomas and all 24 control specimens were used to validate the obtained array data by real-time polymerase chain reaction. Observed variations in expression of wound healing genes were analyzed according to the classification of periapical granulomas as active/progressive versus inactive/stable (as determined by receptor activator for nuclear factor kappa B ligand/osteoprotegerin expression ratio). Results: We observed a marked increase of 5-fold or greater in SERPINE1, TIMP1, COL1A1, COL5A1, VTN, CTGF, FGF7, TGFB1, TNF, CXCL11, ITGA4, and ITGA5 genes in the periapical granulomas when compared with control samples. SERPINE1, TIMP1, COL1A1, TGFB1, and ITGA4 mRNA expression was significantly higher in inactive compared with active periapical granulomas (P < .001), whereas TNF and CXCL11 mRNA expression was higher in active lesions (P < .001). Conclusions: The identification of novel gene targets that curb the progression status of periapical lesions might contribute to a more accurate diagnosis and lead to treatment modalities more conducive to endodontic success. CONTEXT 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase deficiency (3βHSD) is a rare disorder of sexual development and steroidogenesis. There are two isozymes of 3βHSD, HSD3B1 and HSD3B2. Human mutations are known for the HSD3B2 gene which is expressed in the gonads and the adrenals. Little is known about testis histology, fertility and malignancy risk. OBJECTIVE To describe the molecular genetics, the steroid biochemistry, the (immuno-)histochemistry and the clinical implications of a loss-of-function HSD3B2 mutation. METHODS Biochemical, genetic and immunohistochemical investigations on human biomaterials. RESULTS A 46,XY boy presented at birth with severe undervirilization of the external genitalia. Steroid profiling showed low steroid production for mineralocorticoids, glucocorticoids and sex steroids with typical precursor metabolites for HSD3B2 deficiency. The genetic analysis of the HSD3B2 gene revealed a homozygous c.687del27 deletion. At pubertal age, he showed some virilization of the external genitalia and some sex steroid metabolites appeared likely through conversion of precursors secreted by the testis and converted by unaffected HSD3B1 in peripheral tissues. However, he also developed enlarged breasts through production of estrogens in the periphery. Testis histology in late puberty revealed primarily a Sertoli-cell-only pattern and only few tubules with arrested spermatogenesis, presence of few Leydig cells in stroma, but no neoplastic changes. CONCLUSIONS The testis with HSD3B2 deficiency due to the c.687del27 deletion does not express the defective protein. This patient is unlikely to be fertile and his risk for gonadal malignancy is low. Further studies are needed to obtain firm knowledge on malignancy risk for gonads harboring defects of androgen biosynthesis.
