We use many-body theory to find the asymptotic behaviour of second-order correlation corrections to the energies and positron annihilation rates in many- electron systems with respect to the angular momenta l of the single-particle orbitals included. The energy corrections decrease as 1/(l+1/2)4, in agreement with the result of Schwartz, whereas the positron annihilation rate has a slower 1/(l+1/2)2 convergence rate. We illustrate these results by numerical calculations of the energies of Ne and Kr and by examining results from extensive con?guration-interaction calculations of PsH binding and annihilation.

The variation in the activation energy for the initial stage of photomineralization of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP), sensitized by Degussa P25 TiO2 was investigated as a function of P-O2 and [4-CP]. A model was developed based on the incorporation of Arrhenius-type functions in a general rate equation for the initial stage of photomineralization. Values of the essential constants in the model were derived from a few simple experiments. Positive, negative and zero apparent activation energies were predicted using the model, and verified experimentally, under moderate reaction conditions. The general applicability of the model is briefly discussed.

All ionizing radiations deposit energy stochastically along their tracks. The resulting distribution of energies deposited in a small target such as the DNA helix leads to a corresponding spectrum in the severity of damage produced. So far, most information about the probable spectra of DNA lesion complexity has come from Monte Carlo studies which endeavour to model the relationship between the energy deposited in DNA and the damage induced. The aim of this paper is to establish methods of determining this relationship by irradiating pBR322 plasmid DNA using low energy electrons with energies comparable with the minimum energy thought to produce critical damage. The technique of agarose gel electrophoresis has been used to ascertain the fraction of DNA single- and double-strand breaks induced by monoenergetic electrons with energies as low as 25 eV. Purpose: Theoretical modelling techniques are often used to simulate the action of ionizing radiations on cells at the nanometre level, Using monoenergetic vacuum-UV (VUV) radiation to irradiate DNA either dry or humidified, the action spectra for the induction of DNA damage by low energy photons and the role of water and can be studied. These data provide inputs for the theoretical models.

Purpose: To measure action spectra for the induction of single- strand breaks (SSB) and double-strand breaks (DSB) in plasmid DNA by low-energy photons and provide estimates for the energy dependence of strand-break formation important for track-structure simulations of DNA damage.
