- The dissertation analyses the factors explaining the emergence of the Near- Death Experience (NDE) as a research topic in the disciplines of psychology and psychiatry in the United States. The study of a key actor, Russell Noyes, will demonstrate how the experience of near-death became relevant through the work of psychiatrists and psychologists who attributed a clinical and therapeutical quality to it. In order to retrace the academic foundations of the research on death, the experience of dying and near-death, during the 60s and 70s, this dissertation applies a historical method, which combines an empirical approach with a genetic of narratives.

The research project, HR-110, was begun in the fall of 1964 to further investigate the compositional and mechanical properties of some of the carbonate rocks used as aggregate in portland cement concrete. Samples were taken only from those portions of the quarries that are used as aggregate in portland cement concrete by the Iowa State Highway Commission except where designated by commission personnel for purposes of evaluation of potential aggregate sources. Where practical, the samples were taken from each bed recognized by the Highway Commission geologists, and in most instances, the thicker beds were sampled at the top, middle, and bottom to detect any lithologic changes that escaped megascopic observation.

Heavy traffic volumes frequently cause distress in asphalt pavements which were designed under accepted design methods and criteria. The distress appears in the form of rutting in the wheel tracks and rippling or shoving in areas where traffic accelerates or decelerates. Apparently accepted stability test methods alone do not always assure the desired service performance of asphaltic pavements under heavy traffic. The Bituminous Research Laboratory, Engineering Research Institute of Iowa State University undertook the development of a laboratory device by which the resistance of an asphalt paving mix to displacement under traffic might be evaluated, and also be used as a supplemental test to determine adequacy of design of the mix by stability procedures.

A study was undertaken by the Bituminous Research Laboratory of the Engineering Research Institute at Iowa State University, under the sponsorship of the Iowa Highway Research Board, project HR 100, to ascertain the effects of a number of characteristics and properties of asphaltic concrete mixes upon the service behavior of the mixes as evaluated by the Traffic Simulator and by field observations. The study included: Investigations of the relations, of gradation, fraction and resistance to wear of aggregates; of stability, cohesion, per cent voids and asphalt content: of a number of laboratory and field mixes to service behavior as indicated by the Traffic Simulator under various test conditions. Based upon the results of the tests and the relationships noted, tentative criteria for the Traffic Simulator test were devised, subject to verification by observations and measurements of field service behavior of the mixes.

During the summer of 1963 the Materials Department noted the three to four ·year old concrete pavement on I-80 in Cass County was showing extensive surface cracking adjacent to joints and cracks. An examination of the pavement and a few cores from the cracked areas was made by the I.S.H.C. Materials Department and later by David Stark of the P.C.A. Additional surveys were conducted on other concrete pavement made with coarse aggregate from similar rock from two different sources. Blue-line cracking was found on some primary pavement and the indications of incipient cracks were seen on I-29 in Pottawattamie County, north of Council Bluffs. A good "D"-crack pattern is now evident. Surveys were then made of the entire Interstate concrete pavement. No other sections of Interstate were "D"-cracking, although some sections showed joint discoloration. None of these pavements, including the discolored sections, contained "D"-crack associated aggregates. At the same time as the Interstate survey additional pavements and sources were checked. Some "D"-cracking was noticed on certain sections of primary pavement 5-10 years old, in the vicinity of Waterloo and Cedar Rapids. The "D"-cracked pavement was from three aggregate sources, the Newton, Otis, and Burton Ave. quarries. Other pavements in this area that were older or from· different· coarse aggregate sources were not "D"-cracked. We believe that all the "D"-cracking is related, although dedolomitization is probably involved in the intermediate dolomite rocks.
