Esta investigação teve como principal objetivo estudar a relação entre os constructos Inteligência Emocional, Resiliência e Bem-estar Psicológico em jovens de ensino secundário, em vias distintas de ensino. Participaram no estudo 245 jovens, com idades entre 15 e 23 anos, – 155 inseridos no ensino regular e 90 no ensino profissional –, pertencentes ao Agrupamento de Escolas nº 4 de Évora, que responderam a um Questionário Sóciodemográfico, ao Questionário de Inteligência Emocional traço (TEIQue-SF), à Escala de Resiliência de Wagnil e Young (ER) e à Escala de Medida de Manifestação de Bem-Estar Psicológico (EMMBEP). Os principais resultados encontrados sugerem que os jovens do ensino profissional apresentam níveis mais elevados de inteligência emocional traço, resiliência e bemestar psicológico e apontam para a existência de uma relação positiva entre os três constructos; Emotional Intelligence, Resilience and Well-Being: A comparative study between regular high school and vocational route students Abstract: The primary goal of this investigation was to study the relationship between Trait Emotional Intelligence, Resilience and Psychological Well-Being in young people in distinct routes of education. The participants were 245 boys and girls, between the ages of 15 to 23, 155 of which in regular high school and the remain 90 in vocational routes, that responded to a Sociodemographic Questionnaire, to Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire (TEIQue-SF), to Wagnil and Young´s Resilience Scale (ER) and to the Échelle de Mesure des Manifestations de Bien-Être Psychologique. They all belonged to de school’s cluster nº4, in Évora. The main results found suggest that vocational route students present higher levels of trait emotional intelligence, resilience and psychological well-being and point out to the existence of a positive relationship between the three constructs.

The aim of the present study was to advance the methodology and use of time series analysis to quantify dynamic structures in psychophysiological processes and thereby to produce information on spontaneously coupled physiological responses and their behavioral and experiential correlates. Series of analyses using both simulated and empirical cardiac (IBI), electrodermal (EDA), and facial electromyographic (EMG) data indicated that, despite potential autocorrelated structures, smoothing increased the reliability of detecting response coupling from an interindividual distribution of intraindividual measures and that especially the measures of covariance produced accurate information on the extent of coupled responses. This methodology was applied to analyze spontaneously coupled IBI, EDA, and facial EMG responses and vagal activity in their relation to emotional experience and personality characteristics in a group of middle-aged men (n = 37) during the administration of the Rorschach testing protocol. The results revealed new characteristics in the relationship between phasic end-organ synchronization and vagal activity, on the one hand, and individual differences in emotional adjustment to novel situations on the other. Specifically, it appeared that the vagal system is intimately related to emotional and social responsivity. It was also found that the lack of spontaneously synchronized responses is related to decreased energetic arousal (e.g., depression, mood). These findings indicate that the present process analysis approach has many advantages for use in both experimental and applied research, and that it is a useful new paradigm in psychophysiological research. This paper explores the cognitive functions of the Reality Status Evaluation (RSE) system in our experiences of narrative mediated messages (NMM) (fictional, narrative, audio-visual one-way input and moving picture messages), such as fictional TV programs and films. We regard reality in mediated experiences as a special mental and emotional construction and a multi-dimensional concept. We argue that viewers' reality sense in NMM is influenced by many factors with "real - on" as the default value. Some of these factors function as primary mental processes, including the content realism factors of those messages such as Factuality (F), Social Realism (SR), Life Relevance (LR), and Perceptual Realism - involvement (PR), which would have direct impacts on reality evaluations. Other factors, such as Narrative Meaning (NM), Emotional Responses, and personality trait Absorption (AB), will influence the reality evaluations directly or through the mediations of these main dimensions. I designed a questionnaire to study this theoretical construction. I developed items to form scales and sub-scales measuring viewers' subjective experiences of reality evaluations and these factors. Pertinent statistical techniques, such as internal consistency and factorial analysis, were employed to make revisions and improve the quality of the questionnaire. In the formal experiment, after viewing two short films, which were selected as high or low narrative structure messages from previous experiments, participants were required to answer the questionnaire, Absorption questionnaire, and SAM (Self-Assessment Manikin, measuring immediate emotional responses). Results were analyzed using the EQS, structural equation modeling (SEM), and discussed in terms oflatent relations among these subjective factors in mediated experience. The present results supported most of my theoretical hypotheses. In NMM, three main jactors, or dimensions, could be extracted in viewers' subjective reality evaluations: Social Realism (combining with Factuality), Life Relevance and Perceptual Realism. I designed two ways to assess viewers' understanding of na"ative meanings in mediated messages, questionnaire (NM-Q) and rating (NM-R) measurement, and its significant influences on reality evaluations was supported in the final EQS models. Particularly in high story stnlcture messages, the effect of Narrative Meaning (NM) can rarely be explained by only these dimensions of reality evaluations. Also, Empathy seems to playa more important role in RSE of low story structure messages. Also, I focused on two other factors that were pertinent to RSE in NMM, the personality trait Absorption, and Emotional Responses (including two dimensions: Valence and Intensity). Final model results partly supported my theoretical hypotheses about the relationships among Absorption (AB), Social Realism (SR) and Life Relevance (LR); and the immediate impact of Emotional Responses on Perceptual Realism cPR).

L’objectif principal de la présente thèse est d’étudier la nature multifactorielle des difficultés attentionnelles que présentent les personnes ayant subi un traumatisme craniocérébral léger (TCCL). Plus spécifiquement, nous avons voulu cerner l’impact des symptômes de douleur, ainsi que de facteurs émotifs et de personnalité, sur le fonctionnement attentionnel de personnes ayant eu un TCCL. Afin d’atteindre cet objectif, cette thèse présente trois articles. Dans le premier article, l’impact cognitif/neuropsychologique de la douleur chronique (DC) et de ses variables psychologiques concomitantes a été examiné par le biais d’une recension des écrits. Le deuxième article présente une étude expérimentale portant sur les relations entre des variables liées à la douleur et à l’affectivité, et le fonctionnement attentionnel de personnes ayant subi un TCCL étant à différents stades de récupération, comparativement à un groupe témoin normal. Enfin, un troisième article décrit une étude expérimentale qui a été menée afin d’explorer les associations entre certains facteurs de personnalité (neuroticisme, extraversion) et l’efficacité attentionnelle chez des participants normaux, ainsi que chez des personnes ayant subi un TCCL. Les résultats des articles présentés dans cette thèse démontrent que le TCCL en soi peut nuire au fonctionnement attentionnel, puisque des déficits de l’attention peuvent être observés sur des tâches neuropsychologiques qui mesurent les temps de réaction avec précision. Des variables concomitantes au TCCL peuvent aussi avoir un impact négatif sur l’attention sélective; la présence de symptômes de douleur nuit à la performance sur des tâches d’attention et certains traits de personnalité sont associés à l’efficacité attentionnelle ou aux symptômes post-commotionnels. Cette thèse montre donc que divers facteurs peuvent contribuer aux difficultés d’attention des personnes ayant subi un TCCL. Le neuropsychologue devrait utiliser des tâches sensibles aux atteintes, parfois plus subtiles, que présentent les personnes ayant eu un TCCL lorsqu’il tente de comprendre les difficultés attentionnelles de cette clientèle. De plus, les variables associées à la douleur et certains traits de personnalité devraient être systématiquement évalués lors de l’examen neuropsychologique post-TCCL.

Der Dimensionierung emotionaler Expressivität auf Fragebogenebene wurde in zwei Untersuchungen nachgegangen. Gross und John (1998) untersuchten die Items bestehender Fragebogen auf ihre dimensionale Struktur hin und ermittelten die fünf Facetten positive und negative Expressivität, Impulsstärke, Darstellungsfähigkeit (expressive confidence) und Verstellungstendenz (masking), wobei die drei erstgenannten in einem hierarchischen Modell einen engeren Zusammenhang mit einander aufwiesen (Kern-Expressivität) als die beiden anderen. Untersuchung 1 ging den Fragen nach, ob sich die gleichen Dimensionen auch mit deutschen Adaptationen der Fragebogen finden lassen, und ob sich die dimensionale Struktur ändert, wenn weitere Fragebogen aus dem Bereich der Expressivität hinzugenommen werden. Die Dimensionen von Gross und John (1998) konnten nur zum Teil repliziert werden. Dies und die Ergebnisse des erweiterten Itempools führten zur Formulierung eines modifizierten (erweiterten) Modells der Facetten emotionaler Expressivität. In Untersuchung 2 wurden Items für einen Fragebogen zu Facetten emotionaler Expressivität (FFEE) formuliert, welche die im modifizierten Modell spezifizierten Dimensionen erheben sollten. Die drei postulierten übergeordneten Bereiche Kern-Expressivität, soziale Expressivität und kognitive Expressivität konnten auch empirisch gefunden werden. Darüber hinaus differenzierten sich die negativen Items der Kern-Expressivität stärker als die positiven. Die Zusammenhänge mit externen Expressivitäts-Fragebogen, den globalen Persönlichkeitsmerkmalen Extraversion und Neurotizismus und den Angstbewältigungsdimensionen Vigilanz und kognitive Vermeidung bestätigten die Validität des FFEE. Theoretische Implikationen und Ansatzpunkte für weitere Forschungen wurden diskutiert.

BACKGROUND: It is well known that there are specific peripheral activation patterns associated with the emotional valence of sounds. However, it is unclear how these effects adapt over time. The personality traits influencing these processes are also not clear. Anxiety disorders influence the autonomic activation related to emotional processing. However, personality anxiety traits have never been studied in the context of affective auditory stimuli. METHODS: Heart rate, skin conductance, zygomatic muscle activity and subjective rating of emotional valence and arousal were recorded in healthy subjects during the presentation of pleasant, unpleasant, and neutral sounds. Recordings were repeated 1 week later to examine possible time-dependent changes related to habituation and sensitization processes. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: There was not a generalized habituation or sensitization process related to the repeated presentation of affective sounds, but rather, specific adaptation processes for each physiological measure. These observations are consistent with previous studies performed with affective pictures and simple tones. Thus, the measures of skin conductance activity showed the strongest changes over time, including habituation during the first presentation session and sensitization at the end of the second presentation session, whereas the facial electromyographic activity habituated only for the neutral stimuli and the heart rate did not habituate at all. Finally, we showed that the measure of personality trait anxiety influenced the orienting reaction to affective sounds, but not the adaptation processes related to the repeated presentation of these sounds.

Emotional stability promotes intelligence In the research field of the relationship between intelligence and personality factors, one of the most consistent findings is that intelligence is positively correlated with emotional stability. However, few studies have considered this relationship in children, and very few have differentiated between types of intelligence as well as underlying differences in working memory capacity when explaining the relationship between intelligence scores and emotional stability. In this study, the level of emotional stability and performance in a proxy for fluid and crystallized intelligence as well as in two working memory tasks was assessed in a sample of 397 primary school children. Results reveal that emotional stability is significantly positively related to vocabulary (crystallized intelligence), moderated by high working memory performance, but unrelated to abstract reasoning (fluid intelligence). This was interpreted as indicating that the positive relationship between intelligence and emotional stability is mainly due to learning advantages starting in early age, due to high working memory performance, rather than to higher general intelligence. This bears the important implication that emotionally labile children (high level of neuroticism) should be supported to regulate their negative emotions, intrusive thoughts and anxiety as early as possible to eliminate progressive learning disadvantages. One approach to do so is by specific working memory training targeting the improvement of emotional regulation skills.

The Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-fourth edition (i.e. WISC-IV) recognizes a four-factor scoring structure in addition to the Full Scale IQ (FSIQ) score: Verbal Comprehension (VCI), Perceptual Reasoning (PRI), Working Memory (WMI), and Processing Speed (PSI) indices. However, several authors suggested that models based on the Cattell-Horn-Carroll (CHC) theory with 5 or 6 factors provided a better fit to the data than does the current four-factor solution. By comparing the current four-factor structure to CHC-based models, this research aimed to investigate the factorial structure and the constructs underlying the WISC-IV subtest scores with French-speaking Swiss children (N = 249). To deal with this goal, confirmatory factor analyses (CFAs) were conducted. Results showed that a CHC-based model with five factors better fitted the French-Swiss data than did the current WISC-IV scoring structure. All together, these results support the hypothesis of the appropriateness of the CHC model with French-speaking children.

Psychogenetic research has emphasised the influence of social factors on a child's intellectual development. In her work, Ms. Dumitrascu examines two such factors; family size and order of birth. However, since these formal parameters tend to be unstable, other more informal factors should be taken into consideration. Of these, perhaps the most interesting is the "style" of parental education, which Ms. Dumitrascu regards as an expression of national traditions at the family level. This educational style is culture dependent. Only a comparative, cross-cultural study can reveal the real mechanism through which educational style influences the development of a child's intellect and personality. Ms. Dumitrascu conducted an experimental cross-cultural study aimed at examining the effects of the family environment on a child's intellectual development. Three distinct populations were involved in her investigation, each having quite a distinct status in their geographical area; Romanians, Romanies (Gypsies) from Romania, and Russians from the Republic of Moldova. She presented her research in the form of a series of articles written in English totalling 85 pages, and also on disc. A significant difference was revealed between the intelligence of a child living in a large family, and that of a child with no brothers or sisters. In the case of Romany children, the gap is remarkably large. Ms. Dumitrascu concludes that the simultaneous action of several negative factors (low socio-economic status, large family size, socio-cultural isolation of a population) may delay child development. Subjected to such a precarious environment, Romany children do not seek self-realisation, but rather struggle to survive the hardship. Most of them remain out of civilisation. Unfortunately, adult Romanies seldom express any concern regarding their children's successful social integration. The school as main socialisation tool has no value for most parents. Ms. Dumitrascu argues the need for a major effort aimed at helping Romany's social integration. She hopes this project will be of some help for psychologists, social workers, teachers, and all those who are interested in the integration into society of minority groups.
