While load flow conditions vary with different loads, the small-signal stability of the entire system is closely related with to the locations, capacities and models of loads. In this paper, load impacts with different capacities and models on the small-signal stability are analysed. In the real large-scale power system case, the load sensitivity which denotes the sensitivity of the eigenvalue with respect to the load active power is introduced and applied to rank the loads. The loads with high sensitivity are also considered.

We consider the problem of self-healing in reconfigurable networks e.g., peer-to-peer and wireless mesh networks. For such networks under repeated attack by an omniscient adversary, we propose a fully distributed algorithm, Xheal, that maintains good expansion and spectral properties of the network, while keeping the network connected. Moreover, Xheal does this while allowing only low stretch and degree increase per node. The algorithm heals global properties like expansion and stretch while only doing local changes and using only local information. We also provide bounds on the second smallest eigenvalue of the Laplacian which captures key properties such as mixing time, conductance, congestion in routing etc. Xheal has low amortized latency and bandwidth requirements. Our work improves over the self-healing algorithms Forgiving tree [PODC 2008] andForgiving graph [PODC 2009] in that we are able to give guarantees on degree and stretch, while at the same time preserving the expansion and spectral properties of the network.

The small signal stability of interconnected power systems is one of the important aspects that need to be investigated since the oscillations caused by this kind of instability have caused many incidents. With the increasing penetration of wind power in the power system, particularly doubly fed induction generator (DFIG), the impact on the power system small signal stability performance should be fully investigated. Because the DFIG wind turbine integration is through a fast action converter and associated control, it does not inherently participate in the electromechanical small signal oscillation. However, it influences the small signal stability by impacting active power flow paths in the network and replacing synchronous generators that have power system stabilizer (PSS). In this paper, the IEEE 39 bus test system has been used in the analysis. Furthermore, four study cases and several operation scenarios have been conducted and analysed. The selective eigenvalue Arnoldi/lanczos's method is used to obtain the system eigenvalue in the range of frequency from 0.2 Hz to 2 Hz which is related to electromechanical oscillations. Results show that the integration of DFIG wind turbines in a system during several study cases and operation scenarios give different influence on small signal stability performance.

The battle to mitigate Android malware has become more critical with the emergence of new strains incorporating increasingly sophisticated evasion techniques, in turn necessitating more advanced detection capabilities. Hence, in this paper we propose and evaluate a machine learning based approach based on eigenspace analysis for Android malware detection using features derived from static analysis characterization of Android applications. Empirical evaluation with a dataset of real malware and benign samples show that detection rate of over 96% with a very low false positive rate is achievable using the proposed method.

This paper presents the practical use of Prony Analysis to identify small signal oscillation mode parameters from simulated and actual phasor measurement unit (PMU) ringdown data. A well-known two-area four-machine power system was considered as a study case while the latest PMU ringdown data were collected from a double circuit 275 kV main interconnector on the Irish power system. The eigenvalue analysis and power spectral density were also conducted for the purpose of comparison. The capability of Prony Analysis to identify the mode parameters from three different types of simulated PMU ringdown data has been shown successfully. Furthermore, the results indicate that the Irish power system has dominant frequency modes at different frequencies. However, each mode has good system damping.

A (κ, τ)-regular set is a subset of the vertices of a graph G, inducing a κ-regular subgraph such that every vertex not in the subset has τ neighbors in it. A main eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix A of a graph G has an eigenvector not orthogonal to the all-one vector j. For graphs with a (κ, τ)-regular set a necessary and sufficient condition for an eigenvalue be non-main is deduced and the main eigenvalues are characterized. These results are applied to the construction of infinite families of bidegreed graphs with two main eigenvalues and the same spectral radius (index) and some relations with strongly regular graphs are obtained. Finally, the determination of (κ, τ)-regular sets is analyzed. © 2009 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

An upper bound for the sum of the squares of the entries of the principal eigenvector corresponding to a vertex subset inducing a k-regular subgraph is introduced and applied to the determination of an upper bound on the order of such induced subgraphs. Furthermore, for some connected graphs we establish a lower bound for the sum of squares of the entries of the principal eigenvector corresponding to the vertices of an independent set. Moreover, a spectral characterization of families of split graphs, involving its index and the entries of the principal eigenvector corresponding to the vertices of the maximum independent set is given. In particular, the complete split graph case is highlighted.

A graph is singular if the zero eigenvalue is in the spectrum of its 0-1 adjacency matrix A. If an eigenvector belonging to the zero eigenspace of A has no zero entries, then the singular graph is said to be a core graph. A ( k,t)-regular set is a subset of the vertices inducing a k -regular subgraph such that every vertex not in the subset has t neighbours in it. We consider the case when k=t which relates to the eigenvalue zero under certain conditions. We show that if a regular graph has a ( k,k )-regular set, then it is a core graph. By considering the walk matrix we develop an algorithm to extract ( k,k )-regular sets and formulate a necessary and sufficient condition for a graph to be Hamiltonian.

Taking a Fiedler’s result on the spectrum of a matrix formed from two symmetric matrices as a motivation, a more general result is deduced and applied to the determination of adjacency and Laplacian spectra of graphs obtained by a generalized join graph operation on families of graphs (regular in the case of adjacency spectra and arbitrary in the case of Laplacian spectra). Some additional consequences are explored, namely regarding the largest eigenvalue and algebraic connectivity.

Let G be a finite graph with an eigenvalue μ of multiplicity m. A set X of m vertices in G is called a star set for μ in G if μ is not an eigenvalue of the star complement G\X which is the subgraph of G induced by vertices not in X. A vertex subset of a graph is (k ,t)-regular if it induces a k -regular subgraph and every vertex not in the subset has t neighbors in it. We investigate the graphs having a (k,t)-regular set which induces a star complement for some eigenvalue. A survey of known results is provided and new properties for these graphs are deduced. Several particular graphs where these properties stand out are presented as examples.

Let p(G)p(G) and q(G)q(G) be the number of pendant vertices and quasi-pendant vertices of a simple undirected graph G, respectively. Let m_L±(G)(1) be the multiplicity of 1 as eigenvalue of a matrix which can be either the Laplacian or the signless Laplacian of a graph G. A result due to I. Faria states that mL±(G)(1) is bounded below by p(G)−q(G). Let r(G) be the number of internal vertices of G. If r(G)=q(G), following a unified approach we prove that mL±(G)(1)=p(G)−q(G). If r(G)>q(G) then we determine the equality mL±(G)(1)=p(G)−q(G)+mN±(1), where mN±(1) denotes the multiplicity of 1 as eigenvalue of a matrix N±. This matrix is obtained from either the Laplacian or signless Laplacian matrix of the subgraph induced by the internal vertices which are non-quasi-pendant vertices. Furthermore, conditions for 1 to be an eigenvalue of a principal submatrix are deduced and applied to some families of graphs.
