The mission of the Institute of Developing Economies, Japan External Trade Organization (IDE-JETRO) is to make intellectual contributions to the world. In 2006 IDE officially launched its Institutional Repository, ARRIDE based on DSpace to accomplish the mission more effectively. ARRIDE was designed as a three server structure; external server, internal server and development server. Since IDE has copyright on the articles produced by its research staff through their research activities, it can deposit these articles without asking authors for permission, which guarantees sustainability of the Repository. In order that contents in ARRIDE are accessed worldwide IDE has been providing various search engines with proper metadata. Among them, RePEc that is a decentralized database on social sciences is very important.

Enabling Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to formulate knowledge without the intervention of Knowledge Engineers (KEs) requires providing SMEs with methods and tools that abstract the underlying knowledge representation and allow them to focus on modeling activities. Bridging the gap between SME-authored models and their representation is challenging, especially in the case of complex knowledge types like processes, where aspects like frame management, data, and control flow need to be addressed. In this paper, we describe how SME-authored process models can be provided with an operational semantics and grounded in a knowledge representation language like F-logic in order to support process-related reasoning. The main results of this work include a formalism for process representation and a mechanism for automatically translating process diagrams into executable code following such formalism. From all the process models authored by SMEs during evaluation 82% were well-formed, all of which executed correctly. Additionally, the two optimizations applied to the code generation mechanism produced a performance improvement at reasoning time of 25% and 30% with respect to the base case, respectively.

Abstract The design, which is hardly considered in development policies, has not paid adequate attention to justice and global development issues. The antecedents of Design for Development are found in the "technology transfer and imitation"; in "appropriate technologies" of the 70s; in the fashion of doing business for the "base of the pyramid (BoP)"; more recently in the concept of "appropriate innovation"; and lately in the "capabilities approach" which includes questions about justice, equality and development. In this article review is performed an approach to the current situation of Design for Development including: products, business models and academic and research perspectives. In order to achieve it, the review has been conducted through search engines in generic and specialized publications, accessible from the Polytechnic University of Madrid. The results obtained include from commercial products, online repository development technologies, open documentation for design / adaptation of products for development, to conferences, journals, research groups, entrepreneurial initiatives, etc. This is a topic that has no unambiguous expression and that is being addressed in many areas, as in the social sciences and technical and health sciences. ABSTRACT This research falls within the field of the so-called Specialized Languages which for the purpose of this study is the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) discourse. Considering their several distinguishing features terminology concentrates our interest from the point of view of linguistics. It is broadly assumed that terms represent concepts of a subject field. For the classical view of terminology (Wüster, 1968) these terms are formally represented by nouns. Both lexicology and terminology have made significant contributions to the study of terms. Later research as well as other theories on Terminology such as the Communicative Theory of Terminology (Cabré, 1993) have shown that other lexical units can also represent knowledge organization. On these bases, we have focused our research on the relational adjective which represents a functional unit different from a noun while still connected to the noun by means of its nominal root. This may have a potential terminological interest. Therefore the present research is based on the next hypotheses: 1. The relational adjective conveys specialized information when combined with the noun. 2. The relational adjective has a semantic meaning which helps understand the conceptual relationship between the adjective and the noun being modified and disambiguate certain senses of the resulting lexical combination. 3. The relational adjective may impose some restrictions when choosing the nouns it modifies. Considering the above hypotheses, this study has identified and described a multi-word lexical unit pattern [Radj+n] referred to as a Specialized Lexical Combination (SLC) linguistically realized by a relational adjective, Radj, and a noun, n. The analysis of such a syntactic pattern is addressed from the framework of the Generative Lexicon (Pustojovsky, 1995). Such theory provides several levels of semantic description which help lexical decomposition performed generatively. These levels of semantic representation are connected through generative operations or generative devices which account for the compositional interpretation of any linguistic utterance in a given context. This study analyses these different levels and focuses on one of them, i.e. the qualia structure since it may encode the conceptual meaning of the syntactic pattern [Radj+n]. The semantic study of these two lexical items has ultimately confirmed the conceptual meaning of the relational adjective. A corpus made of online ICT articles from magazines written in English and Spanish – some being their translations - has been used for the word extraction. For this purpose some word processing software packages have been employed. Moreover online general language and specialized language dictionaries have been consulted. Search engines, namely WordNet Search 3.1, have been also exploited to find the semantic information of our lexical units. Online reference corpora in English and Spanish have been used for a contrastive analysis of our data. Finally our conclusions have confirmed our initial hypotheses, i.e. relational adjectives are specialized lexical units which together with the nouns are part of the knowledge representation of the ICT subject field. Proposals for new research have been made together with some other suggestions for the design of computer applications to visually show the conceptual meaning of certain lexical units.

In the last few years, there has been a wide development in the research on textual information systems. The goal is to improve these systems in order to allow an easy localization, treatment and access to the information stored in digital format (Digital Databases, Documental Databases, and so on). There are lots of applications focused on information access (for example, Web-search systems like Google or Altavista). However, these applications have problems when they must access to cross-language information, or when they need to show information in a language different from the one of the query. This paper explores the use of syntactic-sematic patterns as a method to access to multilingual information, and revise, in the case of Information Retrieval, where it is possible and useful to employ patterns when it comes to the multilingual and interactive aspects. On the one hand, the multilingual aspects that are going to be studied are the ones related to the access to documents in different languages from the one of the query, as well as the automatic translation of the document, i.e. a machine translation system based on patterns. On the other hand, this paper is going to go deep into the interactive aspects related to the reformulation of a query based on the syntactic-semantic pattern of the request.

The goal of the project is to analyze, experiment, and develop intelligent, interactive and multilingual Text Mining technologies, as a key element of the next generation of search engines, systems with the capacity to find "the need behind the query". This new generation will provide specialized services and interfaces according to the search domain and type of information needed. Moreover, it will integrate textual search (websites) and multimedia search (images, audio, video), it will be able to find and organize information, rather than generating ranked lists of websites.

Development of mass spectrometry techniques to detect protein oxidation, which contributes to signalling and inflammation, is important. Label-free approaches have the advantage of reduced sample manipulation, but are challenging in complex samples owing to undirected analysis of large data sets using statistical search engines. To identify oxidised proteins in biological samples, we previously developed a targeted approach involving precursor ion scanning for diagnostic MS3 ions from oxidised residues. Here, we tested this approach for other oxidations, and compared it with an alternative approach involving the use of extracted ion chromatograms (XICs) generated from high-resolution MSMS data using very narrow mass windows. This accurate mass XIC data methodology was effective at identifying nitrotyrosine, chlorotyrosine, and oxidative deamination of lysine, and for tyrosine oxidations highlighted more modified peptide species than precursor ion scanning or statistical database searches. Although some false positive peaks still occurred in the XICs, these could be identified by comparative assessment of the peak intensities. The method has the advantage that a number of different modifications can be analysed simultaneously in a single LC-MSMS run. This article is part of a Special Issue entitled: Posttranslational Protein modifications in biology and Medicine. Biological significance: The use of accurate mass extracted product ion chromatograms to detect oxidised peptides could improve the identification of oxidatively damaged proteins in inflammatory conditions. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

Determining the Ordered Weighted Averaging (OWA) operator weights is important in decision making applications. Several approaches have been proposed in the literature to obtain the associated weights. This paper provides an alternative disparity model to identify the OWA operator weights. The proposed mathematical model extends the existing disparity approaches by minimizing the sum of the deviation between two distinct OWA weights. The proposed disparity model can be used for a preference ranking aggregation. A numerical example in preference ranking and an application in search engines prove the usefulness of the generated OWA weights.

While much of a company's knowledge can be found in text repositories, current content management systems have limited capabilities for structuring and interpreting documents. In the emerging Semantic Web, search, interpretation and aggregation can be addressed by ontology-based semantic mark-up. In this paper, we examine semantic annotation, identify a number of requirements, and review the current generation of semantic annotation systems. This analysis shows that, while there is still some way to go before semantic annotation tools will be able to address fully all the knowledge management needs, research in the area is active and making good progress.

In many e-commerce Web sites, product recommendation is essential to improve user experience and boost sales. Most existing product recommender systems rely on historical transaction records or Web-site-browsing history of consumers in order to accurately predict online users’ preferences for product recommendation. As such, they are constrained by limited information available on specific e-commerce Web sites. With the prolific use of social media platforms, it now becomes possible to extract product demographics from online product reviews and social networks built from microblogs. Moreover, users’ public profiles available on social media often reveal their demographic attributes such as age, gender, and education. In this paper, we propose to leverage the demographic information of both products and users extracted from social media for product recommendation. In specific, we frame recommendation as a learning to rank problem which takes as input the features derived from both product and user demographics. An ensemble method based on the gradient-boosting regression trees is extended to make it suitable for our recommendation task. We have conducted extensive experiments to obtain both quantitative and qualitative evaluation results. Moreover, we have also conducted a user study to gauge the performance of our proposed recommender system in a real-world deployment. All the results show that our system is more effective in generating recommendation results better matching users’ preferences than the competitive baselines.

Phospholipid oxidation can generate reactive and electrophilic products that are capable of modifying proteins, especially at cysteine, lysine and histidine residues. Such lipoxidation reactions are known to alter protein structure and function, both with gain of function and loss of activity effects. As well as potential importance in the redox regulation of cell behaviour, lipoxidation products in plasma could also be useful biomarkers for stress conditions. Although studies with antibodies suggested the occurrence of lipoxidation adducts on ApoB-100, these products had not previously been characterized at a molecular level. We have developed new mass spectrometry-based approaches to detect and locate adducts of oxidized phospholipids in plasma proteins, as well as direct oxidation modifications of proteins, which avoid some of the problems typically encountered with database search engines leading to erroneous identifications of oxidative PTMs. This approach uses accurate mass extracted ion chromatograms (XICs) of fragment ions from peptides containing oxPTMs, and allows multiple modifications to be examined regardless of the protein that contains them. For example, a reporter ion at 184.074 Da/e corresponding to phosphocholine indicated the presence of oxidized phosphatidylcholine adducts, while 2 reporter ions at 100.078 and 82.025 Da/e were selective for allysine. ApoB-100-oxidized phospholipid adducts were detected even in healthy human samples, as well as LDL from patients with inflammatory disease. Lipidomic studies showed that more than 350 different species of lipid were present in LDL, and were altered in disease conditions. LDL clearly represents a very complex carrier system and one that offers a rich source of information about systemic conditions, with potential as indicators of oxidative damage in ageing or inflammatory diseases.
