Nestmate discrimination in the social wasp Ropalidia marginata: chemical cues and chemosensory mechanism

Nestmate discrimination plays an important role in preserving the integrity of social insect colonies. It is known to occur in the primitively eusocial wasp Ropalidia marginata in which non-nestmate conspecifics are not allowed to come near a nest. However, newly eclosed females are accepted in foreign colonies, suggesting that such individuals may not express the cues that permit differentiation between nestmates and non-nestmates. As cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) have been implicated as chemosensory cues used in nestmate recognition in other species, we investigated, using bioassays and chemical analyses, whether CHCs can play a role in nestmate recognition in R. marginata. We found that individuals can be differentiated according to colony membership using their CHC profiles, suggesting a role of CHCs in nestmate discrimination. Non-nestmate CHCs of adult females received more aggression than nestmate CHCs, thereby showing that CHCs are used as cues for nestmate recognition. Contrarily, and as expected, CHCs of newly eclosed females were not discriminated against when presented to a foreign colony. Behavioural sequence analysis revealed the behavioural mechanism involved in sensing nestmate recognition cues. We also found that newly eclosed females had a different CHC profile from that of adult females, thereby providing an explanation for why young females are accepted in foreign colonies. Cinderella comes to the Ball: Article 14 and the right to non-discrimination in the ECHR

Article 14 ECHR has often been derided as a Cinderella provision, but during the last few years, this has started to change. This article examines how Article 14 has developed, and may live up to its potential as a powerful non-discrimination principle. The case law developments in relation to the “ambit” requirement in Article 14, the development of indirect discrimination case law, and the approval of positive action, all point to a more substantive conception of equality, which offers protection to disadvantaged and vulnerable groups.

Conflict, Regulation and Marginalisation in the North of Ireland: The Experiences of Children and Young People

Based on primary research and consultations conducted over the last four years in the north of Ireland, this article considers the lives and experiences of children and young people in communities where the legacy of conflict and economic deprivation are most marked. It explores the reality of differential policing in communities where paramilitaries filled the policing deficit during the Conflict through informal 'justice' and punishment beatings. Finally, it considers the potential for change in a climate increasingly hostile towards children and young people, and the realisation of their rights.

Predictable Pathways? Negotiating Risk in the Context of Marginalisation and Social Exclusion

This article is based on ethnographic research with young people living in an area of multiple deprivation in the North-east of England. The young people in this study experience many risk factors associated with social exclusion and future offending. Through in-depth examination of crime within the context of their lives, it will be argued that recent theorisations of youth crime and criminal careers do not fully capture the nature of their offending, the contextual circumstances surrounding it and the differential impact of similar risk factors on their lives. The article concludes by suggesting that not only do such theories detract from the situations of poverty and social exclusion in which young people live but that youth policies informed by them potentially add to their experiences of exclusion and marginalisation.
