Despite intensive research on optimizing the methods for depositing carbon encapsulated ferromagnetic nanoparticles, the effect of the carbon cages remains unclear. In the present work, the effect of the graphitic cages on the magnetization of the ferromagnetic core has been studied by comparing the magnetic properties of pure and carbon encapsulated Ni particles of the same size. The carbon encapsulated Ni particles were formed using an electric arc discharge in de-ionized water between a solid graphite cathode and an anode consisting of Ni and C in a mass ratio of Ni:C = 7:3. This method is shown to have potential for low cost production of carbon encapsulated Ni nanoparticle samples with narrow particle size distributions. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) analysis were used to study the crystallography, morphology, and size distribution of the encapsulated and pure Ni nanoparticle samples. The availability of encapsulated particles with various sizes allowed us to elucidate the role of carbon cages in size-dependent properties. Our data suggest that even though encapsulation is beneficial for protection against hostile chemical environments and for avoiding low proximity phenomena, it suppresses the saturation magnetization of the Ni cores.

It is known that the press formability and the elongation of laser textured sheet are improved, and the service life of textured roll is longer than that of the un-textured roll due to hardening of the treated surface. One of the goals to develop high repetitive rate YAG laser-induced discharge texturing (LIDT) is to get deeper hardening zone. By observing and measuring cross-section of LIDT spots in different discharge conditions, it is found that the single-crater, which is formed by the discharge conditions of anode, which is covered by an oil film and with rectangular current waveform, has the most depth of heat affected zone (HAZ) comparing with other crater shapes when discharge energy is the same. The depth of HAZ is mainly depends on pulse duration when the discharge spot is single-crater. The results are analyzed.

While it is well known that it is possible to determine the effective flexoelectric coefficient of nematic liquid crystals using hybrid cells [1], this technique can be difficult due to the necessity of using a D.C. field. We have used a second method[2], requiring an A.C. field, to determine this parameter and here we compare the two techniques. The A.C. method employs the linear flexoelectrically induced linear electro-optic switching mechanism observed in chiral nematics. In order to use this second technique a chiral nematic phase is induced in an achiral nematic by the addition of a small amount of chiral additive (∼3% concentration w/w) to give helix pitch lengths of typically 0.5-1.0 μm. We note that the two methods can be used interchangeably, since they produce similar results, and we conclude with a discussion of their relative merits.

An electron cyclotron wave resonant methane plasma discharge was used for the high rate deposition of hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H). Deposition rates of up to ∼400 Å/min were obtained over substrates up to 2.5 in. in diameter with a film thickness uniformity of ∼±10%. The deposited films were characterised in terms of their mass density, sp3 and hydrogen contents, C-H bonding, intrinsic stress, scratch resistance and friction properties. The deposited films possessed an average sp3 content, mass density and refractive index of ∼58%, 1.76 g/cm3 and 2.035 respectively.Mechanical characterisation indicated that the films possessed very low steady-state coefficients of friction (ca. 0.06) and a moderate shear strength of ∼141 MPa. Nano-indentation measurements also indicated a hardness and elastic modulus of ∼16.1 and 160 GPa respectively. The critical loads required to induce coating failure were also observed to increase with ion energy as a consequence of the increase in degree of ion mixing at the interface. Furthermore, coating failure under scratch test conditions was observed to take place via fracture within the silicon substrate itself, rather than either in the coating or at the film/substrate interface. © 2003 Elsevier B.V. This paper studies the surface melting in the atmosphere by YAG laser-guided micro-arc discharge. In three kinds of surface conditions (free, oiled, and polyethylene covered), we try to control the diameter and the power density of discharge pit. It is found that the power density of 3 x 10(6) W/cm(2) of discharge pit on the oiled surface is moderate to form the melted layer thicker than that of the others, adapting to strengthen the surface of material, and the power density of 1.07 x 10(7) W/cm(2) of discharge pit on the polyethylene-covered surface is highest to form the deepest discharge pit among them, adapting to remove the material.

In this research, asymmetrical cold rolling was produced by the difference in the coefficient of friction between rolls and sheets rather than the difference of roll radius or rotation speeds. The influence of friction coefficient ratio on the cross shear deformation, rolling pressure and torque was investigated using slab analysis. The results showed that the shear deformation zone length increased with the increase of the friction coefficient ratio. The rolling force decreased only under the condition that the friction coefficient ratio increased while the sum of the friction coefficients was held constant. As the reduction per pass was increased, the shear deformation zone length increased and the rolling force also increased. An increase of the front tension resulted in a decrease of the shear deformation zone length. An increase of back tension, however, led to an increase of the shear deformation zone length. The reduction of rolling torque for the work roll with higher surface roughness was greater than that for the work roll with lower surface roughness. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. In order to describe the effect of latent hardening on the macro-plastic behavior of foc-crystal, a new expression for hardening coefficient is proposed in which there are 12 material constants, each having clear physical meaning. And a method of material constant calibration is suggested and used to determine the material constants of copper and aluminum crystal. The simulated load-elongation curves along various crystallographic orientations are comparable with the experimental ones.

The GlidArc discharge is one of the main generation methods of non-equilibrium plasma near atmospheric pressures. In general, Gliding Arc discharge is driven by gas flow [1] in axial direction or by magnetic field in circumferential direction. [2] In this paper, a GlidArc discharge driven by rotating-gas-flow in circumferential direction is presented. The principle of the plasma generator is analyzed. The distribution of the temperature in axial direction is measured by a digital thermometer for three different gases. The experimental set-up of the GlidArc plasma is shown in Fig.1. It consists of a center electrode, an outside electrode, a power supply and a gas supply. The shortest distance between the electrodes is 2-3 mm. When a power supply with 10000 volts is attached to the electrodes, the arc will be ignited at the shortest distance. The small plasma column is rotated by the rotating gas flow in circumferential direction and then the rotating arc is driven towards the exit of the setup by the gas flow.
