Research on women’s employment has proliferated over recent decades, often under a perspective that conceptualizes female labour market activity as independent of male presences and absences in the productive and reproductive spheres. In the face of these approaches, the article argues the need to focus on the couple as the unit of analysis of work-life articulation. After referring to the main theoretical arguments that, from a gender perspective within labour studies, have pointed out the relevance of placing the household as the central space for the analysis of the sexual division of labour, the article reviews different empirical contributions that have incorporated such perspective in the international literature. Next, the state of the art in the Spanish literature is presented, before arguing the desirability of applying such framework of analysis to the study of employment and care work in Spanish households, which are at present undergoing major transformations.

Collaboration in the public sector is imperative to achieve e-government objectives such as improved efficiency and effectiveness of public administration and improved quality of public services. Collaboration across organizational and institutional boundaries requires public organizations to share e-government systems and services through for instance, interoperable information technology and processes. Demands on public organizations to become more open also require that public organizations adopt new collaborative approaches for inviting and engaging citizens in governmental activities. E-government related collaboration in the public sector is challenging, however, and collaboration initiatives often fail. Public organizations need to learn how to collaborate since forms of e-government collaboration and expected outcomes are mostly unknown. How public organizations can collaborate and the expected outcomes are thus investigated in this thesis by studying multiple collaboration cases on the acquisition and implementation of a particular e-government investment (digital archive). This thesis also investigates how e-government collaboration can be facilitated through artifacts. It is done through a case study, where objects that cross boundaries between collaborating communities in the public sector are studied, and by designing a configurable process model integrating several processes for social services. By using design science, this thesis also investigates how an m-government solution that facilitates collaboration between citizens and public organizations can be designed. The thesis contributes to literature through describing five different modes of interorganizational collaboration in the public sector and the expected benefits from each mode. It also contributes with an instantiation of a configurable process model supporting three open social e-services and with evidence of how it can facilitate collaboration. This thesis further describes how boundary objects facilitate collaboration between different communities in an open government design initiative. It contributes with a designed mobile government solution, thereby providing proof of concept and initial design implications for enabling collaboration with citizens through citizen sourcing (outsourcing a governmental activity to citizens through an open call). This thesis also identifies research streams within e-government collaboration research through a literature review and the thesis contributions are related to the identified research streams. This thesis gives directions for future research by suggesting that future research should focus further on understanding e-government collaboration and how information and communication technology can facilitate collaboration in the public sector. It is suggested that further research should investigate m-government solutions to form design theories. Future research should also examine how value can be co-created in e-government collaboration.

The present thesis describes the development of heterogeneous catalytic methodologies using metal−organic frameworks (MOFs) as porous matrices for supporting transition metal catalysts. A wide spectrum of chemical reactions is covered. Following the introductory section (Chapter 1), the results are divided between one descriptive part (Chapter 2) and four experimental parts (Chapters 3–6). Chapter 2 provides a detailed account of MOFs and their role in heterogeneous catalysis. Specific synthesis methods and characterization techniques that may be unfamiliar to organic chemists are illustrated based on examples from this work. Pd-catalyzed heterogeneous C−C coupling and C−H functionalization reactions are studied in Chapter 3, with focus on their practical utility. A vast functional group tolerance is reported, allowing access to substrates of relevance for the pharmaceutical industry. Issues concerning the recyclability of MOF-supported catalysts, leaching and operation under continuous flow are discussed in detail. The following chapter explores puzzling questions regarding the nature of the catalytically active species and the pathways of deactivation for Pd@MOF catalysts. These questions are addressed through detailed mechanistic investigations which include in situ XRD and XAS data acquisition. For this purpose a custom reaction cell is also described in Chapter 4. The scope of Pd@MOF-catalyzed reactions is expanded in Chapter 5. A strategy for boosting the thermal and chemical robustness of MOF crystals is presented. Pd@MOF catalysts are coated with a protecting SiO2 layer, which improves their mechanical properties without impeding diffusion. The resulting nanocomposite is better suited to withstand the harsh conditions of aerobic oxidation reactions. In this chapter, the influence of the nanoparticles’ geometry over the catalyst’s selectivity is also investigated. While Chapters 3–5 dealt with Pd-catalyzed processes, Chapter 6 introduces hybrid materials based on first-row transition metals. Their reactivity is explored towards light-driven water splitting. The heterogenization process leads to stabilized active sites, facilitating the spectroscopic probing of intermediates in the catalytic cycle.

The aim of this thesis was to describe and evaluate visual acuity, macular edema and patientreported outcomes (PRO) following anti-VEGF treatment of diabetic macular edema (DME) patients in a real-world setting. Using a longitudinal study design, a cohort of DME patients was followed from baseline to 1 year after treatment start. Data were collected from two eye clinics at two county hospitals. Social background characteristics, medical data and PRO were measured before treatment initiation, at four month and after 1 year. A total of 57 patients completed the study. Mean age was 69 years and the sample was equally distributed regarding sex. At baseline, the patients described their general health as low. One year after treatment initiation, 30 patients had improved visual acuity and 27 patients had no improvement in visual acuity. The patients whose visual acuity improved reported an improvement in several subscales in patient-reported outcome measures (PROM), which was in contrast to the group that experienced a decline in visual acuity, where there was no improvement in PROM. Outcomes from the study can be useful for developing and providing relevant information and support to patients undergoing this treatment.

In this thesis, the magnetic properties of four transition-metal oxides are presented. Their multiferroic and magnetoelectric phases have been investigated by means of different neutron scattering techniques. The materials TbMnO3 and MnWO4 belong to the group of spin-induced multiferroics. Their ferroelectric polarization can be explained by the inverse DzyaloshinskiiMoriya interaction. Another common feature of both materials is the presence of subsequent magnetic transitions from a spin-density wave to a spin spiral. The features of the phase transitions have been studied in both materials and it could be shown that diffuse magnetic scattering from the spin spiral is present even in the ordered spin-density wave phase. The excitation spectrum in the multiferroic phase of TbMnO3 was investigated in detail and a comprehensive dataset was obtained using time-of-flight spectroscopy. A spin-wave model could be obtained which can quantitatively describe the full dispersion. Furthermore, the polarization of the zone-center excitations could be derived which fit well to data from inelastic neutron spectroscopy and infrared spectroscopy. With the combination of spherical neutron polarimetry and a poling of the sample by an electric field, it was possible to observe the chiral magnetic component of the magnetic excitations in TbMnO3 and MnWO4. The spin-wave model for TbMnO3 obtained in this thesis is able to correctly describe the dispersion of this component. The double tungstate NaFe(WO4)2 is isostructural to the multiferroic MnWO4 and develops a complex magnetic phase diagram. By the use of neutron diffraction techniques, the zero-field structure and high-field structures in magnetic field applied along the b-axis could be determined. The data reveal a direct transition into an incommensurate spin-spiral structure. The value of the incommensurability is driven by anharmonic modulations and shows strong hysteresis effects. The static and dynamic properties in the magnetoelectric spin-glass phase of Ni0.42Mn0.58TiO3 were studied in detail. The spin-glass phase is composed of short-ranged MnTiO3 and NiTiO3-type order. The antiferromagnetic domains could be controlled by crossed magnetic and electric fields, which was visualized using spherical neutron polarimetry. A comprehensive dataset of the magnetic excitations in the spin-glass phase was collected. The dataset revealed correlations in the hexagonal plane which are only weakly coupled along the c-axis. The excitation spectra could be simulated by taking into account the MnTiO3-type order.

In the present paper, we discuss the time before the “age of reports”. Besides the Coleman Report in the period of Coleman, the Lady Plowden Report also appeared, while there were important studies in France (Bourdieu & Passeron, 1964; Peyre, 1959) and studies that inaugurated comprehensive education in Nordic countries. We focus on the period after the World War II, which was marked by rising economic nationalism, on the one hand, and by the second wave of mass education, on the other, bearing the promise of more equality and a reduction of several social inequalities, both supposed to be ensured by school. It was a period of great expectations related to the power of education and the rise of educational meritocracy. On this background, in the second part of the paper, the authors attempt to explore the phenomenon of the aforementioned reports, which significantly questioned the power of education and, at the same time, enabled the formation of evidence-based education policies. In this part of the paper, the central place is devoted to the case of socialist Yugoslavia/Slovenia and its striving for more equality and equity through education. Through the socialist ideology of more education for all, socialist Yugoslavia, with its exaggerated stress on the unified school and its overemphasised belief in simple equality, overstepped the line between relying on comprehensive education as an important mechanism for increasing the possibility of more equal and just education, on the one hand, and the myth of the almighty unified school capable of eradicating social inequalities, especially class inequalities, on the other. With this radical approach to the reduction of inequalities, socialist policy in the then Yugoslavia paradoxically reduced the opportunity for greater equality, and even more so for more equitable education. Financial constraints influence corporate policies of firms, including both investment decisions and external financing policies. The relevance of this phenomenon has become more pronounced during and after the recent financial crisis in 2007/2008. In addition to raising costs of external financing, the effects of financial crisis limited the availability of external financing which had implications for employment, investment, sale of assets, and tech spending. This thesis provides a comprehensive analysis of the effects of financial constraints on share issuance and repurchases decisions. Financial constraints comprise both internal constraints reflecting the demand for external financing and external financial constraints that relate to the supply of external financing. The study also examines both operating performance and stock market reactions associated with equity issuance methods. The first empirical chapter explores the simultaneous effects of financial constraints and market timing on share issuance decisions. Internal financing constraints limit firms’ ability to issue overvalued equity. On the other hand, financial crisis and low market liquidity (external financial constraints) restrict availability of equity financing and consequently increase the costs of external financing. Therefore, the study explores the extent to which internal and external financing constraints limit market timing of equity issues. This study finds that financial constraints play a significant role in whether firms time their equity issues when the shares are overvalued. The conclusion is that financially constrained firms issue overvalued equity when the external equity market or the general economic conditions are favourable. During recessionary periods, costs of external finance increase such that financially constrained firms are less likely to issue overvalued equity. Only unconstrained firms are more likely to issue overvalued equity even during crisis. Similarly, small firms that need cash flows to finance growth projects are less likely to access external equity financing during period of significant economic recessions. Moreover, constrained firms have low average stock returns compared to unconstrained firms, especially when they issue overvalued equity. The second chapter examines the operating performance and stock returns associated with equity issuance methods. Firms in the UK can issue equity through rights issues, open offers, and private placement. This study argues that alternative equity issuance methods are associated with a different level of operating performance and long-term stock returns. Firms using private placement are associated with poor operating performance. However, rights issues are found empirically to be associated with higher operating performance and less negative long-term stock returns after issuance in comparison to counterpart firms that issue private placements and open offers. Thus, rights issuing firms perform better than open offers and private placement because the favourable operating performance at the time of issuance generates subsequent positive long-run stock price response. Right issuing firms are of better quality and outperform firms that adopt open offers and private placement. In the third empirical chapter, the study explores the levered share repurchase of internally financially unconstrained firms. Unconstrained firms are expected to repurchase their shares using internal funds rather than through external borrowings. However, evidence shows that levered share repurchases are common among unconstrained firms. These firms display this repurchase behaviour when they have bond ratings or investment grade ratings that allow them to obtain cheap external debt financing. It is found that internally financially unconstrained firms borrow to finance their share repurchase when they invest more. Levered repurchase firms are associated with less positive abnormal returns than unlevered repurchase firms. For the levered repurchase sample, high investing firms are associated with more positive long-run abnormal stock returns than low investing firms. It appears the market underreact to the levered repurchase in the short-run regardless of the level of investments. These findings indicate that market reactions reflect both undervaluation and signaling hypotheses of positive information associated with share repurchase. As the firms undertake capital investments, they generate future cash flows, limit the effects of leverage on financial distress and ultimately reduce the risk of the equity capital.

Introduction: Oesophageal adenocarcinoma has increased dramatically in incidence over the past three decades with a particularly high burden of disease at the gastro-oesophageal junction. Many cases occur in individuals without known gastro-oesophageal reflux disease and in the absence of Barrett’s oesophagus suggesting that mechanisms other than traditional reflux may be important. Distal squamous mucosa may be prone to acid damage even in the absence of traditional reflux by the mechanism of distal opening of the lower oesophageal sphincter. This is splaying of the distal segment of lower oesophageal sphincter allowing acid ingress without traditional reflux. It has been suggested that the cardiac mucosa at the gastro-oesophageal junction, separating oesophageal squamous mucosa and acid secreting columnar mucosa of the stomach may be an abnormal mucosa arising as a consequence of acid damage. By this theory the cardiac mucosa is metaplastic and akin to ultra-short Barrett’s oesophagus. Obesity is a known risk factor for adenocarcinoma at the gastro-oesophageal junction and its rise has paralleled that of oesophageal cancer. Some of this excess risk undoubtedly operates through stress on the gastro-oesophageal junction and a predisposition to reflux. However we sought to explore the impact of obesity on the gastro-oesophageal junction in healthy volunteers without reflux and in particular to determine the characteristics of the cardiac mucosa and mechanisms of reflux in this group. Methods: 61 healthy volunteers with normal and increased waist circumference were recruited. 15 were found to have a hiatus hernia during the study protocol and were analysed separately. Volunteers had comprehensive pathological, physiological and anatomical assessments of the gastro-oesophageal junction including endoscopy with biopsies, MRI scanning before and after a standardised meal, prolonged recording of pH and manometry before and after a meal and screening by fluoroscopy to identify the squamo-columnar junction. In the course of the early manometric assessments a potential error associated with the manometry system recordings was identified. We therefore also sought to document and address this on the benchtop and in vivo. Key Findings: 1. In documenting the behaviour of the manoscan we described an immediate effect of temperature change on the pressure recorded by the sensors; ‘thermal effect’ and an ongoing drift of the recorded pressure with time; ‘baseline drift’. Thermal effect was well compensated within the standard operation of the system but baseline drift not addressed. Applying a linear correction to recorded data substantially reduced the error associated with baseline drift. 2. In asymptomatic healthy volunteers there was lengthening of the cardiac mucosa in association with central obesity and age. Furthermore, the cardiac mucosa in healthy volunteers demonstrated an almost identical immunophenotype to non-IM Barrett’s mucosa, which is considered to arise by metaplasia of oesophageal squamous mucosa. These findings support the hypothesis that the cardia is metaplastic in origin. 3. We have demonstrated a plausible mechanism of damage to distal squamous mucosa in association with obesity. In those with a large waist circumference we observed increased ingress of acid within but not across the lower oesophageal sphincter; ‘intrasphincteric reflux’ 4. The 15 healthy volunteers with a hiatus hernia were compared to 15 controls matched for age, gender and waist circumference. Those with a hiatus hernia had a longer cardiac mucosa and although they did not have excess traditional reflux they had excess distal acid exposure by short segment acid reflux and intrasphincteric acid reflux. Conclusions: These findings are likely to be relevant to adenocarcinoma of the gastro-oesophageal junction

Investments in training measures can only be considered effective if the transfer of the learned contents to practical situations is continuously successful. In this context the scientific and professional discourse regarding the effectiveness of further education, especially regarding training transfer, has intensified considerably. This analysis provides a systematic and comprehensive overview of the current state of international empirical research regarding major influencing factors of learning transfer in the context of formalized further vocational training. Our review of literature differentiates the most important influencing factors on the micro-level of the specific individual characteristics of the participants, the meso-level of measure-specific characteristics of the field of learning, as well as institutional characteristics of the work environment at the macro-level. Decades of transfer research brings forth a wealth of information regarding factors which influence the learning transfer. The current analysis systematizes these results and clarifies that the current state of research regarding the determinants of the process of learning transfer shows clear trends. But there are also some inconsistent findings. Thus the question of which factors positively influence the success of learning transfer is well-studied for the micro-level in particular. The article shows that there is still a research deficit concerning the major determinants of learning transfer at the meso- and macro-level. Finally, in this context this article identifies promising directions for future research. (DIPF/Orig.)

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is becoming a growing global problem, and there is an urgent need to identify reliable blood biomarkers of the risk and progression of this condition. A potential candidate is the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which modulates major trophic effects in the brain. However, findings are apparently inconsistent regarding peripheral blood BDNF levels in AD patients vs. healthy people. We thus performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of the studies that have examined peripheral BDNF levels in patients with AD or mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and healthy controls. We searched articles through PubMed, EMBASE, and hand searching. Over a total pool of 2061 potential articles, 26 met all inclusion criteria (including a total of 1584 AD patients, 556 MCI patients, and 1294 controls). A meta-analysis of BDNF levels between early AD and controls showed statistically significantly higher levels (SMD [95 % CI]: 0.72 [0.31, 1.13]) with no heterogeneity. AD patients with a low (<20) mini-mental state examination (MMSE) score had lower peripheral BDNF levels compared with controls (SMD [95 % CI]: -0.33 [-0.60, -0.05]). However, we found no statistically significant difference in blood (serum/plasma) BDNF levels between all AD patients and controls (standard mean difference, SMD [95 % CI]: -0.16 [-0.4, 0.07]), and there was heterogeneity among studies (P < 0.0001, I 2 = 85.8 %). There were no differences in blood BDNF levels among AD or MCI patients vs. controls by subgroup analyses according to age, sex, and drug use. In conclusion, this meta-analysis shows that peripheral blood BDNF levels seem to be increased in early AD and decreased in AD patients with low MMSE scores respectively compared with their age- and sex-matched healthy referents. At present, however, this could not be concluded from individual studies.
