Nonlinear analysis of thermoacoustic instability is essential for prediction of frequencies, amplitudes and stability of limit cycles. Limit cycles in thermoacoustic systems are reached when the energy input from driving processes and energy losses from damping processes balance each other over a cycle of the oscillation. In this paper an integral relation for the rate of change of energy of a thermoacoustic system is derived. This relation is analogous to the well-known Rayleigh criterion in thermoacoustics, but can be used to calculate the amplitudes of limit cycles, as well as their stability. The relation is applied to a thermoacoustic system of a ducted slot-stabilized 2-D premixed flame. The flame is modelled using a nonlinear kinematic model based on the G-equation, while the acoustics of planar waves in the tube are governed by linearised momentum and energy equations. Using open-loop forced simulations, the flame describing function (FDF) is calculated. The gain and phase information from the FDF is used with the integral relation to construct a cyclic integral rate of change of energy (CIRCE) diagram that indicates the amplitude and stability of limit cycles. This diagram is also used to identify the types of bifurcation the system exhibits and to find the minimum amplitude of excitation needed to reach a stable limit cycle from another linearly stable state, for single- mode thermoacoustic systems. Furthermore, this diagram shows precisely how the choice of velocity model and the amplitudedependence of the gain and the phase of the FDF influence the nonlinear dynamics of the system. Time domain simulations of the coupled thermoacoustic system are performed with a Galerkin discretization for acoustic pressure and velocity. Limit cycle calculations using a single mode, as well as twenty modes, are compared against predictions from the CIRCE diagram. For the single mode system, the time domain calculations agree well with the frequency domain predictions. The heat release rate is highly nonlinear but, because there is only a single acoustic mode, this does not affect the limit cycle amplitude. For the twenty-mode system, however, the higher harmonics of the heat release rate and acoustic velocity interact resulting in a larger limit cycle amplitude. Multimode simulations show that in some situations the contribution from higher harmonics to the nonlinear dynamics can be significant and must be considered for an accurate and comprehensive analysis of thermoacoustic systems. Current fluctuations can provide additional insight into quantum transport in mesoscopic systems. The present work is carried out for the fluctuation properties of transport through a pair of coupled quantum dots which are connected with ferromagnetic electrodes. Based on an efficient particle-number-resolved master equation approach, we are concerned with not only fluctuations of the total charge and spin currents, but also of each individual spin-dependent component. As a result of competition among the spin polarization, Coulomb interaction, and dot-dot tunnel coupling, rich behaviors are found for the self- and mutual-correlation functions of the spin-dependent currents.

Strongly vertically coupled InAs/GaAs quantum dots (QDs) with modulation doping are investigated, and polarization dependence of two-color absorptions was observed. Analysis of photoluminescence (PL) and absorption spectra shows that s-polarized absorptions at. 10.0 and 13.4 mu m, stem from the first excited state E-1 and the second excited state E-2 in the QDs to the bound state E-InGaAs in the InGaAs spacer, respectively, whereas p-polarized absorptions at 10.0 and 8.2 mu m stem from the first excited state E-1 and the ground E-g in the QDs to the bound state E-InGaAs in the InGaAs spacer, respectively. These measurements illustrate that transitions from excited states are more sensitive to normal incidence, which are very important in designing QD infrared detector. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. We study the disentanglement evolution of two spin qubits which interact with a general XY spin-chain environment. The dynamical process of the disentanglement is numerically and analytically investigated in the vicinity of a quantum phase transition (QPT) of the spin chain in both weak and strong coupling cases. We find that the disentanglement of the two spin qubits may be greatly enhanced by the quantum critical behavior of the environmental spin chain. We give a detailed analysis to facilitate the understanding of the QPT-enhanced decaying behavior of the coherence factor. Furthermore, the scaling behavior in the disentanglement dynamics is also revealed and analyzed.

We investigate plasmon excitations in a quantum wire that consists of an infinite one-dimensional array of vertically coupled InAs/GaAs strained quantum dots (QDs). The research is carried out in the framework of random-phase approximation using effective-mass theory. Our formalism is capable of studying plasmons with strong tunneling among QDs, which frustrate the conventionally adopted tight-binding approximation. Based on this formalism, a systematic study on the intraminiband or intrasubband plasmon in vertically coupled InAs/GaAs strained QDs is presented. It is found that an increase of the dot spacing will inevitably reduce the plasmon energy. In contrast, the role of dot height is relatively complex and depends on the dot spacing. The results demonstrate the possibility to engineer collective excitations in low dimensional systems by simply changing their geometric configuration.

The full spectra of magnetoplasmons and single-particle excitations are obtained of coupled one-dimensional electron gases in parallel semiconductor quantum wires with tunneling. We show the effects of the interwire Coulomb interaction and the tunneling, as well as the magnetic-field-induced localization on the elementary excitations in symmetric and asymmetric coulped quantum wire structures. The interacton and resonance between the plasmon and the intersubband single-particle excitations are found in magnetic fields.

Based on an idea that spatial separation of charge states can enhance quantum coherence, we propose a scheme for a quantum computation with the quantum bit (qubit) constructed from two coupled quantum dots. Quantum information is stored in the electron-hole pair state with the electron and hole located in different dots, which enables the qubit state to be very long-lived. Universal quantum gates involving any pair of qubits are realized by coupling the quantum dots through the cavity photon which is a hopeful candidate for the transfer of long-range information. The operation analysis is carried out by estimating the gate time versus the decoherence time.

The dielectric response of an electron system composed of an array of parallel quantum wires with weak coupling and strong coupling are studied, and the dispersions of the collective excitations and the single particle excitations (SPE) as functions of wave-vectors are given. It is found that for the nearly isolated quantum wires with several subbands occupation, there are a series of intra-subband collective excitations between corresponding intra-subband SPE spectra. There also exist inter-subband collective excitations when q(x) not equal 0 (q(x) is the wave-vector component in the modulation direction), whose energies are close by the corresponding inter-subband SPE spectra. The energy of the intra-subband mode decreases and that of inter-subband mode increases with q(x) increasing. The collective excitation dispersions show obvious anisotropy in the 1D quantum limit. The calculated results agree with the experiment well. The coupling between quantum wires affects markedly both the collective and single-particle excitations spectra. The system changes to a near-two-dimensional electron system gradually with increasing coupling.

The thermal population in photocarrier systems coupled by hole mixing tunneling is studied by an analysis of the high energy tails in cw photoluminescence spectra of asymmetric coupled double wells. Photocarriers in wide well are heated due to hole transfer from the narrow well through resonant tunneling as well as by photon heating. The influences of the excitation intensity and lattice temperature on the tunneling transfer and thermal population are discussed.

A novel coupled distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) with double thickness periods was theoretically analyzed based on the spontaneous radiation properties of high brightness AlGaInP light emitting diodes(LED). Several important factors were considered including spontaneous radiation angle distribution, absorption and FTR of DBR. Calculation results showed that the optimum optical thickness of single layer of the DBR deviates from 1/4 lambda. AIGaInP high brightness light emitting diodes both with Al0.5Ga0.5As/AlAs coupled DBR and with conventional DBR were fabricated by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition(MOCVD). X-ray double crystal diffraction and reflection spectrum were employed to determine the thickness and reflectivity of the DBR. It was found that reflectivity of coupled DBR is less sensitive to incident angle than conventional DBR, higher external quantum efficiency of light emitting diodes with coupled DBR was obtained than that with conventional DBR.

High-speed free-space optical communication systems have recently used fiber-optical components. The coupling efficiency with which the received laser beam can be coupled into a single-mode fiber is noticeably limited by atmospheric turbulence due to the degradation of its spatial coherence. Fortunately, adaptive optics (AO) can alleviate this limitation by partially correcting the turbulence-distorted wavefront. The coupling efficiency improvement provided by Zernike modal AO correction is numerically evaluated. It is found that the first 3-20 corrected polynomials can considerably improve the fiber-coupling efficiency. The improvement brought by AO is compared with that brought by a coherent fiber array. Finally, a hybrid technique that integrates AO and a coherent fiber array is proposed. Results show that the hybrid technique outperforms each of the two above-mentioned techniques. With the objective of making calcium alginate gel beads with small and uniform size, membrane emulsification coupled with internal gelation was proposed. Spherical gel beads with mean size of about 50 mum, and even smaller ones in water, and with narrow size distribution were successfully obtained. Experimental studies focusing mainly on the effect of process parameters on bead properties were performed. The size of the beads was mainly dependent on the diameter of the membrane pores. High transmembrane pressure made for large gel beads with wide size distribution. Low sodium alginate concentration produced nonspherical beads, whereas a high concentration was unsuitable for the production of small beads with narrow distribution. Thus 1.5% w/v was enough. A high surfactant concentration favored the formation of small beads, but the adverse effect on mass transfer should be considered in this novel process. (C) 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

A rapid and simple analytical method was developed for the simultaneous and quantitative determination and separation of hydrophilic imidazolium ionic liquids (ILs) (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride, [C(4)mim]Cl; 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride, [C(6)mim]Cl; 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride, [C(8)mim]Cl; 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride, [Amim]Cl; or 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide, [Amim]Br) with miscible ethyl acetate and EtOH and their mixtures using reverse phase liquid chromatography coupled with refractive index detection (RPLC-RI). The influence of 60 to 100% (volume percentage) methanol in the mobile phase on the IL systems ([C(4)mim]Cl, [C(6)mim]Cl, [C(8)mim]Cl, [Amim]Br, or [Amim]Cl)-ethyl acetate-EtOH was investigated.

capillary electrophoresis (CE) is characterized. A 300 mum diameter Pt working electrode was used to directly couple with a 75 mum inner diameter separation capillary without an electric field decoupler. The hydrodynamic cyclic voltammogram (CV) of Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) showed that electrophoretic current did not affect the ECL reaction. The presence of high-voltage (HV) field only resulted in the shift of the ECL detection potential. The distance of capillary to electrode was an important parameter for optimizing detection performance as it determined the characteristics of mass transport toward the electrode and the actual concentration of Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) in the detection region. The optimum distance of capillary to electrode was decided by the inner diameter of the capillary, too. For a 75 mum capillary, the working electrode should be placed away from the capillary outlet at a distance within the range of 20-260 mum. The effects of pH value of ECL solution and molecular structure of analytes on peak height and theoretical plate numbers were discussed. Using the 75 mum capillary, under the optimum conditions, the method provided a linear range for tripropylamine (TPA) between 1 x 10(-10) and 1 X 10(-5) mol/L with correlation coefficient of 0.998. The detection limit (signal-to-noise ratio S/N = 3) was 5.0 x 10(-11) mol/L. The relative standard deviation in peak height for eight consecutive injections was 5.6%. By this new technique lidocaine spiked in a urine sample was determined. The method exhibited the linear range for lidocaine from 5.0 x 10(-8) to 1.0 X 10(-5) mol/L with correlation efficient of 0.998. The limit of detection (S/N = 3) was 2.0 x 10(-1) mol/L.
