Catalytic activity of cordierite honeycomb by a completely new coating method for the oxidation of major hydrocarbons in exhaust gas is reported here. The new coating process consists of (a) dipping and growing γ-Al2O3 on cordierite by combustion of monolith dipped in the aqueous solution of Al(NO3)3 and oxalyldihydrazide (ODH) (or glycine) at 600 °C and active catalyst phase Ce0.98Pd0.02O2−δ on γ-Al2O3-coated cordierite again by combustion of monolith dipped in the aqueous solution of ceric ammonium nitrate, ODH and 1.2 × 10−3 M PdCl2 solution at 500 °C. Weight of active catalyst can be varied from 0.02 wt% to 2 wt% which is sufficient but can be loaded even up to 12 wt% by repeating dip dry combustion. Adhesion of catalyst to cordierite surface is via oxide growth, which is very strong. ‘HC’ oxidation over the monolith catalyst is carried out with a mixture having the composition, 470 ppm of both propene and propane and 870 ppm of both ethylene and acetylene with the varying amount of O2. Three-way catalytic test is done by putting hydrocarbon mixture along with CO (10 000 ppm), NO (2000 ppm) and O2 (15 000 ppm). Below 350 °C full conversion is achieved. In this method, handling of nano-material powder is avoided.

Oxygen reactivity and catalytic activity of the cobalt-containing layered defect perovskites, YBa2Cu2CoO7+delta and LaBa2Cu2CoO7+delta, in comparison with LaBa2Cu3O7-delta have been investigated employing temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) and temperature-programmed surface reactions (TPSR) in the stoichiometric and catalytic mode using carbon monoxide as a probe molecule. TPD studies showed evidence for the presence of two distinct labile oxygen species, one at (0 0 1/2) sites and the other at (0 1/2 0) sites in LaBa2Cu2CoO7+delta against a single labile species at (0 1/2 0) in the case of two other oxides. The activation energies for the catalytic oxidation of carbon monoxide by oxygen over LaBa2Cu3O7-delta, YBa2Cu2CoO7+delta, and LaBa2Cu2CoO7+delta have been estimated to be 24.2, 15.9, and 13.6 kcal/mol, respectively. The reactivity and catalytic activity of the oxide systems have been interpreted in terms of the structural changes brought about by substituents, guided by a directing effect of the larger rare earth cation. TPSR profiles, structural analysis, and infrared spectroscopic investigations suggest that the oxygen present at (0 0 1/2) sites in the case of LaBa2Cu2CoO7+delta is accessible to catalytic oxidation of CO through a Mars-Van Krevelen pathway. Catalytic conversion of CO to CO2 over LaBa2Cu2CoO7+delta occurs at 200 degrees C. The enhanced reactivity is explained in terms of changes brought about in the coordination polyhedra around transition metals, enhanced basal plane oxygen diffusivity, and redox potentials of the different transition metal cations.

We demonstrate an ultrafast method for the formation of, graphene supported Pt catalysts by the co-reduction of graphene oxide and Pt salt using ethylene glycol under microwave irradiation conditions. Detailed analysis of the mechanism of formation of the hybrids indicates a synergistic co-reduction mechanism whereby the presence of the Pt ions leads to a faster reduction of GO and the presence of the defect sites on the reduced GO serves as anchor points for the heterogeneous nucleation of Pt. The resulting hybrid consists of ultrafine nanoparticles of Pt uniformly distributed on the reduced GO susbtrate. We have shown that the hybrid exhibits good catalytic activity for methanol oxidation and hydrogen conversion reactions. The mechanism is general and applicable for the synthesis of other multifunctional hybrids based on graphene.

Cathodic reduction of oxygen in fuel cells is known to be enhanced on platinum alloys in relation to the platinum metal. The higher performance of the platinum alloys is as a result of the improved oxygen-reduction kinetics on the alloys but there is hardly any increase in the electrode platinum-surface-areas for the platinum alloys as compared to the platinum metal, and thus the higher performance is solely due to the enhanced electrocatalytic activity of the alloys as compared to the platinum metal. The present X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) study on carbon-supported Pt, Pt–Co and Pt–Co–Cr electrocatalysts suggests the presence of a relatively lower Pt-oxide content on the alloys. The X-ray powder diffraction patterns for these electrocatalysts show that while the carbon-supported platinum electrocatalyst has a face-centered cubic (fcc) phase, carbon-supported Pt–Co and Pt–Co–Cr electrocatalysts exhibit a face-centered tetragonal (fct) phase. But, Pt electrocatalyst has a lower particle-size and, hence, a higher dispersion. Previous studies have shown higher activities on the Pt-alloys than on Pt, and have attributed it to changes in the electronic and structural characteristics of Pt. These changes can be correlated with the lower oxidation-state of Pt sites, as found in this study.

The preparation of ZnO nanorod films decorated with cobalt-acetate (CoAc) electrocatalyst and its activity for photoelectrolysis of water have been demonstrated. The photochemically prepared CoAc catalyst is chemically and morphologically similar to the electrochemically prepared CoAc catalyst. The on-set potential of oxygen evolution reaction is lower on CoAc-ZnO photoanode in relation to bare ZnO photoanode. There is a three to four fold increase in photooxidation current of OER due to the presence of CoAc co-catalyst on ZnO. Thus, the photochemically prepared CoAc on ZnO is an alternative and efficient co-catalyst for photoelectrochemical oxygen evolution reaction. The enhancement in photocatalytic activity of ZnO by the CoAc catalyst photochemically deposited from acetate buffer solution is significantly greater than the cobalt-phosphate (CoPi) co-catalyst deposited from phosphate buffer solution. The anionic tripod ligand NaLoMe (L_(oMe) - = [(η^5-C_5H_5)Co{P(O)(OCH_3)_2}_3]^-) reacts with RuO_4 in a biphasic reaction mixture of 1% H_2SO_4 and CCI_4 to afford [(L_(oMe) (HO)Ru^(IV) (µ-O)_2Ru ^(IV)(OH)(L_(oMe)] (1), which is treated with aqueous CF_3S0_3H to generate [(L_(oMe)(H_2O)Ru^(IV) (µ-O)_2R^(IV) (OH_2)(L_(oMe)][CF_3SO_3]_2 ([H_21][CF_3SO_3]_2). Addition of iodosobenzene to an acetonitrile solution of this salt yields [(L_(oMe)(O)Ru^v(µ-0)2Ru^v-(O)(_(LoMe)] (2). The dimer 1 can be reduced chemically or electrochemically to the Ru^(III)- Ru^(III) dimers [(L_(oMe)(H_20)Ru^(III) (µ-OH)_2Ru^(III) (OH_2)(L_(oMe)) ]^2+ and [(L_(oMe)) ^(III) (µ-0Hh(µ-0H2)Ru^(III) (L_(oMe)]^2+ which interconvert in aqueous media. Two electron processes dominate both the bulk chemistry and the electrochemistry of 1. Among these processes are the quasi-reversible Ru^(IV) - Ru^(IV)/Ru^(III)- Ru^(III) and Ru^(III)- Ru^(III)/ Ru^(II)- Ru^(II) reductions and a largely irreversible Ru^(V) - Ru^(V)/ Ru^(IV) - Ru^(IV)/oxidation. The dioxo dimer 2 oxidizes alcohols and aldehydes in organic media to afford 1 and the corresponding aldehydes and acids. Analogously, the Ru^(V) - Ru^(V)/ Ru^(IV)- Ru^(IV) redox wave mediates the electrooxidation of alcohols and aldehydes in aqueous buffer. In this system, substrates can be oxidized completely to CO_2. The kinetic behavior of these oxidations was examined by UV-vis and chronoamperometry, respectively, and the chemistry is typical of metal-oxo complexes, indicating that electronic coupling between two metal centers does not dramatically affect the metal-oxo chemistry. Dimer [H_21]^(2+) also reacts with alcohols, aldehydes, and triphenylphosphine in CH_3CN to afford Ru^(III)- Ru^(III) products including [(L_(oMe))CH_3CN) Ru^(III) (µ-OH)_2 Ru^(III) (NCCH_3)( L_(oMe))][CF_3SO_3]2 (characterized by X-ray crystallography) and the corresponding organic products. Reaction of 1 with formaldehyde in aqueous buffer quantitatively affords the triply bridged dimer [(L_(oMe)Ru^(III) (µ-OH)2- (µ-HCOO) Ru^(III) (L_(oMe)][CF_3SO_3] (characterized by X-ray crystallography). This reaction evidently proceeds by two parallel inner-sphere pathways, one of which is autocatalytic. Neither pathway exhibits a primary isotope effect suggesting the rate determining process could be the formation of an intermediate, perhaps a Ru^(IV) - Ru^(IV) formate adduct. The Ru^(III)- Ru^(III)formate adduct is easily oxidized to the Ru^(IV) - Ru^(IV) analog [(L_(oMe)Ru^(IV)(µ-OH)_2-(µ-HCOO) Ru^(IV) (L_(oMe)][CF_3SO_3], which, after isolation, reacts slowly with aqueous formaldehyde to generate free formate and the Ru^(III)- Ru^(III) formate adduct. These dimers function as catalysts for the electrooxidation of formaldehyde at low anodic potentials (+0.0 V versus SCE in aqueous buffer, pH 8.5) and enhance the activity of Nafion treated palladium/carbon heterogeneous fuel cell catalysts.

It is indispensable to remove CO at the level of less than 50ppm in H-2-rich feed gas for the proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells. In this paper, catalyst with high activity and selectivity, and a microchannel reactor for CO preferential oxidation (PROX) have been developed. The results indicated that potassium on supported Rh metal catalysts had a promoting effect in the CO selective catalytic oxidation under H-2-rich stream, and microchannel reactor has an excellent ability to use in on-board hydrogen generation system. CO conversion keeps at high levels even at a very high GHSV as 500 000 h(-1), so, miniaturization of hydrogen generation system can be achieved by using the microchannel reactor. Ce1-XNiXO2 oxides with X varying from 0.05 to 0.5 were prepared by different methods and characterized by XRD and TPR techniques. Ce(0.7)Mi(0.3)O(2) sample prepared by sol-gel method shows the highest reducibility and the highest catalytic activity for methane combustion. Three kinds of Ni phases co-exist in the Ce1-XNiXO2 catalysts prepared by sol-gel method: (i) aggregated NiO on the support CeO2, (ii) highly dispersed NiO with strong interaction with CeO2 and (iii) Ni atoms incorporated into CeO2 lattice. The distribution of different Ni species strongly depends on the preparation methods. The highly dispersed NiO shows the highest activity for methane combustion. The NiO aggregated on the support CeO2 shows lower catalytic activity for methane combustion, while the least catalytic activity is found for the Ni species incorporated into CeO2. Any oxygen vacancy formed in CeO2 lattice due to the incorporating of Ni atoms adsorbs and activates the molecular oxygen to form active oxygen species. So the highest catalytic activity for methane combustion on Ce0.7Ni0.3O2 catalyst is attributed not only to the highly dispersed Ni species but also to the more active oxygen species formed. In this paper, it was found that the electrocatalytic activity of a Pt electrode for the electro-oxidation of formic acid could be dramatically enhanced with the modification of macrocycle compounds, such as iron-tetrasulfophthalocyanine (FeTSPc). The electro-oxidation of formic acid on a modified Pt electrode with FeTSPc occurs mainly through a direct pathway. A series of macrocycle compounds were also investigated as modifiers and exhibited a promotion effect similar to the Pt electrode.
