Stress induced a decrease in the reactivity of the aorta to noradrenaline (NA), as a consequence of an endothelial nitric oxide (NO) system hyperactivity. The main characteristic of the stress response is activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and sympathetic adrenomedullary (SA) system. The participation of the HPA axis and SA system in the decreased reactivity to NA in the aorta of rats exposed to 4-h immobilization was investigated. Concentration-response relationships for NA were obtained in the aorta, with and without endothelium, isolated from normal and stressed rats, following these procedures: (1) in the absence and presence of L-NAME; (2) after adrenalectomy (ADX) or not, in the absence or presence of L-NAME; (3) ADX rats treated or not with corticosterone; (4) ADX associated with stress; and (5) treated or not with reserpine. The reactivity of aorta without endothelium was unaffected by the procedures. The reactivity of aorta with endothelium was decreased by either stress or ADX. This effect was reversed by both L-NAME and corticosterone. ADX did not potentiate the decrease in the aorta reactivity induced by stress. Reserpine did not change the reactivity of aorta with endothelium from normal rats, but prevented the decrease in reactivity induced by stress. It is concluded that the HPA axis participates in endothelium-dependent modulation of aorta reactivity in normal conditions and that thr SA system participates in hyperactivity of the endothelial NO-system induced by stress, which is responsible for the decreased aorta reactivity to NA. The aim of this study was to examine the influence of moderate swimming training on the GH/IGF-1 growth axis and tibial mass in diabetic rats. Male Wistar rats were allocated to one of four groups: sedentary control (SC), trained control (TC), sedentary diabetic (SD) and trained diabetic (TD). Diabetes was induced with alloxan (35 mg/kg b.w.). The training program consisted of a 1 h swimming session/day with a load corresponding to 5% of the b.w., five days/week for six weeks. At the end of the training period, the rats were sacrificed and blood was collected for quantification of the serum glucose, insulin, GH, and IGF-1 concentrations. Samples of skeletal muscle were used to quantify the IGF-1 pepticle content. The tibias were collected to determine their total area, length and bone mineral content. The results were analyzed by ANOVA with P < 0.05 indicating significance. Diabetes decreased the serum levels of GH and IGF-1, as well as the tibial length, total area and bone mineral content in the SD group (P < 0.05). Physical training increased the serum IGF-1 level in the TC and TD groups when compared to the sedentary groups (SC and SD), and the tibial length, total area and bone mineral content were higher in the TD group than in the SD group (P < 0.05). Exercise did not alter the level of IGF-1 in gastrocnemius muscle in nondiabetic rats, but the muscle IGF-1 content was higher in the TD group than in the SD group. These results indicate that swimming training stimulates bone mass and the GH/IGF-1 axis in diabetic rats. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Endocrine system plays a major role in the control of reproductive functions which are regulated by the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonad axis and its interactions. FSH and LH receptor genes are expressed at the gonads and GnRH receptor gene is expressed at the anterior pituitary gland. Misense mutations of the FSH, LH or GnRH receptors, activating or inactivating their functions in mammals, are potentially useful to allow the understanding of the role of this group of gonadotropins in reproductive phenotypes as early puberty and birth interval length. In the present study, polymorphisms in bovine exon 11 and 3'UTR of LHR, exon 10 and 3'UTR of FSHR and GnRHR genes were characterized with some of them resulting in changes in the aminoacidic chain. These polymorphic sites were found in a Bos taurus indicus (Nellore) female population by means of PCR-SSCP and DNA sequencing. Association between nucleotidic/aminoacidic changes and early puberty were determined by Chi-square analysis. It was found association between FSHR 3'UTR polymorphisms at position 2181, 2248 and 2249 bp and early puberty phenotype (p < 0.05). The presence of these new molecular markers might be considered in further studies to validate its correlation with early puberty or other reproduction associated phenotypes in cattle breeds. The pressure field in a high-power klystron amplifier is investigated to scale the ionic vacuum pump used to maintain the ultra high-vacuum in the device in order to increase its life-time. The investigation is conducted using an 1.3 GHz, 100 A - 240 keV high-power klystron with five reentrant coaxial cavities, assembled in a cylindrical drift tube 1.2 m long. The diffusion equation is solved to the regime molecular flow to obtain the pressure profile along the axis of the klystron drift tube. The model, solved by both analytical and numerical procedures, is able to determine the pressure values in steady-state case. This work considers the specific conductance and all important gas sources, as in the degassing of the drift tube and cavities walls, cathode, and collector. For the drift tube degassing rate equals to q(deg) = 2x10(-12) (-)mbar.L.s(-1) cm(-2) (degassing rate per unit area), to cavities q(cavity) = 3x10(-13) mbar.L.s(-1)cm(-2), to the cathode q(cathode) = 6x10(-9)_mbar.L.s(-1) and to the collector q(collector) = 6x10(-9) mbar.L.s(-1), it was found that a 10 L.s(-1) ionic vacuum pump connected in the output waveguide wall is suitable. In this case, the pressure obtained in the cathode is p(cathode) = 6.3x10(-9) mbar, in the collector p(collector) = 2.7x10(-9) mbar, and in the output waveguide p = 2.1x10(-9) mbar. Although only the steady-state case is analyzed, some aspects that may be relevant in a transient situation, for instance, when the beam hits the drift tube walls, producing a gas burst, is also commented.

a-b axis-oriented, lanthanum doped Bi4Ti3O12 (BLT) thin films with a TiO2 rutile buffer layer deposited on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates were grown by the soft chemical method. Butterfly dielectric behavior has been achieved and can be ascribed to the ferroelectric domain switching. The remanent polarization and the coercive voltage for the film deposited on TiO2 buffer layer were 22.2 mu C/cm(2) and 1.8 V, respectively. Random-oriented BLT films showed a reduction in switching polarization when compared to the a-b axis-oriented films. Due to the excellent physical properties, these films are a promising candidate for use in lead-free applications in ferroelectric devices. (c) 2006 American Institute of Physics.

Effects of a short-term hyper- and hypoprolactinaemia on serum concentrations of LH, testosterone and semen quality in six male Beagles were investigated. Blood samples were collected at 3-day intervals for 12 weeks. The time span was divided into five 3-week periods: pre-treatment, metoclopramide (MCP) treatment (0.2 mg/kg orally three times daily), cabergoline (CAB) treatment (5 mu g/kg orally once daily), post-treatment 1 and post-treatment 2. In the latter, only semen characteristics were evaluated. Semen parameters were analyzed once per week during the whole 15-week investigation time. At the end of each period, the effects of a single intravenous injection of thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH; 10 mu g/kg) on the secretion of prolactin (PRL), LH, testosterone, thyroid-stimulating hormone and thyroxine (T4) were investigated. Pre-treatment serum PRL concentration increased under MCP (p < 0.05), followed by a decrease under CAB administration (p < 0.05). Luteinizing hormone and testosterone concentrations were not affected. Except for straight-line sperm velocity, semen quality did not differ between collection periods. A single iv TRH injection induced a significant PRL increase at 20 min in all experimental periods except during CAB treatment. Luteinizing hormone and testosterone did not show clear TRH-related changes. Basic T4 levels were significantly reduced after CAB treatment ( p < 0.05). The results of the present study demonstrate that MCP-induced short-term hyperprolactinaemia in male beagles does not seriously affect the hypothalamo-pituitary axis and semen quality.

The effects of gonadectomy on the secretion of prolactin, LH, TSH, and thyroxine were investigated. Blood serum hormone concentrations were analysed before and at 20, 120, and 180 min after a single iv TRH injection in each of eight healthy intact and castrated male beagle dogs before (control) and after 4-week treatment with the dopamine-2 receptor agonist cabergoline. Under control conditions the mean prolactin, TSH, and thyroxine concentrations were similar in intact and gonadectomised dogs, and administration of TRH provoked a significant (p < 0.01) increase in concentrations of the three hormones. The overall inhibitory effect of cabergoline treatment on prolactin secretion was more pronounced in the castrated dogs compared with the intact group. Cabergoline significantly suppressed the TRH-induced prolactin increase in each group (p < 0.01). Corresponding TRH-stimulated TSH concentrations were not affected by cabergoline. In the gonadectomised dogs, thyroxine concentrations before and at 120 and 180 min after TRH injection were significantly lower than under control conditions. LH concentrations were always higher (p < 0.01) in gonadectomised dogs compared with the intact dogs, but appeared to be affected neither by TRH nor by cabergoline administration. It can thus be concluded from the results, that gonadectomy does not result in hyperprolactinaemia in male dogs, while LH concentrations are significantly increased due to missing androgen feedback. Thyroid function remains unaffected by gonadectomy. Testicular steroids appear to interact with central dopaminergic and probably other neuroendocrine mechanisms regulating the secretion of prolactin, TSH, and thyroxine. Thus, long-term dopamine-2 receptor agonistic treatment may lead to a hypothyroid condition in castrated male dogs. (c) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Resistivity (DC) method using vertical electrical soundings (Schlumberger array) are conducted In the vicinity of Canoas/RS, applied to environmental studies with the objective of Investigating groundwater conditions, The present paper shows a geoelectrlcal Identification of the lithology and an estimate of the relationship between the resistivity and Dar Zarrouk parameters (transverse unit resistance and longitudinal unit conductance) with the properties such as aquifer transmlssivlty and protection of ground water resources, In the saturated sediments, resistivity values defined the following sequence: clay layers (resistivity < 40 ohm-m) and sand layers (resistivity > 40 ohm-m), Two sand layers were identified; one corresponding to the unconfined aquifer and another to the confined aquifer between two clay layers, In the map of the transverse unit resistance of the unconfined aquifer, the tendencies of high values can be associated with the zones of high transmissivity; hence, these zones are suggested for the installation of monitoring wells, The map of longitudinal conductance Illustrates the Impermeability of the confining clay layer, Values of S > 1.0 siemens would indicate zones in which the confined aquifer would be protected; In comparison, values of S < 1.0 siemens would indicate zones of probable risks of contamination. © 2006 Sociedade Brasileira de Geofísica.

The main aim of this study was to develop dense and conducting SnO 2 ceramics without precipitated phases on the grain boundaries, which was verified using field emission scanning microscopy (FE-SEM) coupled with an energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (FE-SEM/EDS). Two sample groups were investigated, where the first sample group was doped with zinc while the second one was doped with cobalt. The ceramics were prepared using the oxides mixture method and the sintering was carried out in a conventional muffle oven as well as in microwave oven. The results obtained were found to be similar regarding the relative density for the two sintering methods while time and temperature gains were observed for the microwave sintering method. The relative densities obtained were nearly 95%, for the two sintering methods. Concerning the electrical characterization measurements-electric field x current density as well as the environment temperature, the ceramics obtained through the conventional sintering method presented non-ohmic behavior. For the microwave sintered ceramics, we observed an ohmic behavior with electrical resistivity of 1.3 Ωcm for the samples doped with ZnO/Nb 2O 5 and 2.5 Ωcm for that of the samples doped with CoO/Nb 2O 5. The FE-SEM/EDS results for the microwave sintered ceramics indicated a structure with a reduced number of pores and other phases segregated at the grain boundaries, which leads to a better conductive ceramic than the conventional oven sintered samples. The dilatometry analysis determined the muffle sintering temperature and the difference between the densification of cobalt and zinc oxides. The addition of niobium oxide resulted in the decrease in resistivity, which thus led us to conclude that it is possible to obtain dense ceramics with low electrical resistivity based on SnO 2 using commercial oxides by the oxides mixture technique and the microwave oven sintering method.
