In November 2010, nearly 110,000 people in the United States were waiting for organs for transplantation. Despite the fact that the organ donor registration rate has doubled in the last year, Texas has the lowest registration rate in the nation. Due to the need for improved registration rates in Texas, this practice-based culminating experience was to write an application for federal funding for the central Texas organ procurement organization, Texas Organ Sharing Alliance. The culminating experience has two levels of significance for public health – (1) to engage in an activity to promote organ donation registration, and (2) to provide professional experience in grant writing. ^ The process began with a literature review. The review was to identify successful intervention activities in motivating organ donation registration that could be used in intervention design for the grant application. Conclusions derived from the literature review included (1) the need to specifically encourage family discussions, (2) religious and community leaders can be leveraged to facilitate organ donation conversations in families, (3) communication content must be culturally sensitive and (4) ethnic disparities in transplantation must be acknowledged and discussed.^ Post the literature review; the experience followed a five step process of developing the grant application. The steps included securing permission to proceed, assembling a project team, creation of a project plan and timeline, writing each element of the grant application including the design of proposed intervention activities, and completion of the federal grant application. ^ After the grant application was written, an evaluation of the grant writing process was conducted. Opportunities for improvement were identified. The first opportunity was the need for better timeline management to allow for review of the application by an independent party, iterative development of the budget proposal, and development of collaborative partnerships. Another improvement opportunity was the management of conflict regarding the design of the intervention that stemmed from marketing versus evidence-based approaches. Six mandates were identified by the Committee as high-impact and worthy of the General Assembly's immediate attention. These recommendations include the elimination or modification of three mandates that would result in an estimated $55.1 million in annual savings for public universities. The other three recommendations, if implemented, will provide long-term indirect savings by reducing administrative work and promoting efficiencies at public universities. Two additional mandates are included in this report as areas of concern. The Committee asks the General Assembly to also review these two concerns during the upcoming fiscal year.

This study explored influences on adoption, maintenance and cessation of smoking among young women as they experienced life transitions: leaving home, gaining employment or attending college/university, marriage and parenthood. Standardized, open-ended telephone interviews were conducted with 80 women (including never smokers, continuing smokers, recent adopters and quitters) aged 24-29 years, recruited from participants in the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health. The social context of smoking (socializing with other smokers, drinking alcohol and going to pubs and clubs) was perceived to be a predominant influence on smoking from the time young women left home until they settled into a committed relationship or started their own family. Stress was identified as an important factor as they experienced lifestyle changes. An increased sensitivity to the negative aspects of smoking after turning 21 was reported, and around the mid-20s the women became concerned about the addictive nature of cigarettes. Motherhood was seen to carry increased responsibilities to protect children from passive smoking and there was a perceived importance of positive role modelling to protect children from becoming smokers themselves. This study highlights the need for public health campaigns to address the social role that smoking plays in young women's lives, and the perceived use of cigarettes for stress relief. Life changes such as settling down with a partner and the contemplation of motherhood provide opportunities for targeted interventions to promote quitting.

There are few professions in which visual acuity is as important as it is to radiologists. The diagnostic decision making process is composed of a number of events (detection or observation, interpretation and reporting), where the detection phase is subject to a number of physical and psychological phenomena that are critical to the process. Visual acuity is one phenomenon that has often been overlooked, and there is very little research assessing the impact of reduced visual acuity on diagnostic performance. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of reduced visual acuity on an observer’s ability to detect simulated nodules in an anthropomorphic chest phantom.

The intimate partner violence (IPV) is defined as any behavior within an intimate relationship that causes physical, psychological or sexual damage to members of relationship (Organización Panamericana de la Salud, Oficina Regional para las Américas de la Organización Mundial de la Salud 2003). Exposure to the IPV during pregnancy leads to a number of risk factors with significant impact on the physical, mental and social well-being of women, as well in perinatal outcomes. The prevalence rates, existing throughout the world, have demonstrated the importance of further enhance the attention given to the woman / couple / family, from prenatal care to the postpartum. (World Health Organization, WHO Collaborating Centre for Violence Prevention 2010), challenges the health professionals to monitor the phenomenon of IPV and compare national and international indicators in order to adjust and qualify interventions. This requires awareness of health professionals in the early identification of these indicators using appropriate communication strategies and safe environments.

Os Hospitais são organizações extraordinariamente complicadas, representando uma das formas mais complexas de organização humana. Desempenham, igualmente, um papel inquestionável e essencial para a sociedade – a prestação dos cuidados de saúde, mas também a promoção, prevenção e protecção da mesma. Ao contrário do que se pensa, a compreensão da necessidade de desenvolvimento de departamentos de comunicação organizacional no seio das instituições de saúde públicas não é só uma realidade nos países anglo-saxónicos. Na realidade um pouco por toda a Europa a consciencialização sobre o valor intrínseco da comunicação organizacional e institucional para o melhor desempenho das unidades de saúde é já uma questão de facto ao contrário do que parece continuar a acontecer em Portugal. Esta investigação tem como objectivo por um lado a caracterização das estruturas de comunicação existentes nos hospitais públicos portugueses e por outro lado, evidenciar as áreas que são mais privilegiadas por estas estruturas. É importante num momento de mudança em termos de políticas públicas de saúde, a clarificação do papel dos departamentos de comunicação no seio das unidades hospitalares colocando-os enquanto órgãos estratégicos no desenvolvimento e na prossecução dos objectivos das instituições.

RESUMO - A Responsabilidade Social é actuar de modo justo, digno e responsável com todos os stakeholders. Por outro lado a Saúde Pública tem como principal objectivo promover a saúde dos indivíduos, comunidades e sociedades como um todo, incidindo nos determinantes de saúde. As empresas têm adoptado inúmeras acções e politicas socialmente responsáveis que contribuem para o aumento da concretização dos objectivos a longo prazo. As empresas criam códigos de ética e de conduta, redigem relatórios sociais, aderem a normas e certificações internacionais, promovem auditorias internas e externas, desenvolvem políticas laborais para evitar problemas e escândalos que afectem a reputação da empresa, apoiam cada vez mais causas sociais, preocupamse com o bem-estar e as condições de trabalho dos colaboradores e com o ambiente. Todos os esforços e investimentos parecem ser poucos quando se observa a possibilidade de maior reconhecimento e retorno financeiro. Existem diversas concepções para o que é ser-se socialmente responsável e de como a empresa deve agir enquanto cidadã. Ao mesmo tempo, são muitas as actividades que podem ser desenvolvidas no que diz respeito à responsabilidade social das empresas na área da promoção da saúde pública. Este estudo pretende criar uma ligação entre o conceito de Responsabilidade Social das Empresas e de Saúde Pública e, nesse sentido, procurar associar os objectivos das acções desenvolvidas pelas empresas estudadas com os objectivos prosseguidos pela Saúde Pública.

This work evaluates the efficiency position of the health system of each OECD country. It identifies whether, or not, health systems changed in terms of quality and performance after the financial crisis. The health systems performance was calculated by fixed-effects estimator and by stochastic frontier analysis. The results suggest that many of those countries that the crisis affected the most are more efficient than the OECD average. In addition, some of those countries even managed to reach the top decile in the efficiency ranking. Finally, we analyze the stochastic frontier efficiency scores together with other health indicators to evaluate the health systems’ overall adjustments derived from the crisis.
