To reveal the moisture migration mechanism of the unsaturated red clays, which are sensitive to water content change and widely distributed in South China, and then rationally use them as a filling material for highway embankments, a method to measure the water content of red clay cylinders using X-ray computed tomography (CT) was proposed and verified. Then, studies on the moisture migrations in the red clays under the rainfall and ground water level were performed at different degrees of compaction. The results show that the relationship between dry density, water content, and CT value determined from X-ray CT tests can be used to nondestructively measure the water content of red clay cylinders at different migration time, which avoids the error reduced by the sample-to-sample variation. The rainfall, ground water level, and degree of compaction are factors that can significantly affect the moisture migration distance and migration rate. Some techniques, such as lowering groundwater table and increasing degree of compaction of the red clays, can be used to prevent or delay the moisture migration in highway embankments filled with red clays.

In this contribution, we experimentally test the effects of azimuth and tilt angle on the acoustic reflectivity of a liquid- anisotropic solid interface. For this study, we are using a large source transducer, and acquired data for samples with different tilt angles. We use Phenolic CE material, which is known to have orthorhombic symmetry. Our results show that changes of the tilt angle produce important variations on the reflectivity that are larger as the tilt increases. The most remarkable feature is the change of the critical angle with the azimuth, which shows a larger spread for larger tilts. The spectral components of the acquired waveforms also show characteristic features linked to the location of the critical angle, we particularly observed a drop in the peak frequency. These observations suggest that care must be taken about the interpretation and inversion of observed incidence and azimuth dependent seismic reflectivities and critical angles in obtaining information on a formation's anisotropy. Zip archive contains four segy files: - LAB_TI00, is not tilted sample in contact with water, - LAB_TI30, is 30degrees tilted sample in contact with water, - LAB_TI45, is 45 degrees tilted sample in contact with water, - LAB_TI90, is 90 degrees tilted sample in contact with water.

The oxygen isotopic composition of pore waters squeezed from sediments in Hole 817C co-varies with the oxygen isotopic composition of Globigerinoides ruber below 8 mbsf. The magnitude of the variation in the pore water d18O is approximately 30% of the variation in the foraminifers. Overall, the d18O of the pore waters increases down the core, a trend that is also present in the Cl- concentrations. The variations in the d18O of pore waters may be the result of either of two phenomena. First, these may reflect original variations in the waters, the magnitude of which has been subsequently reduced by process of diffusion. Second, these may reflect recrystallization of the precursor sediment and isotopic exchange between the fluids and the recrystallized sediment. At the moment data are not available to ascertain which process is responsible although the correlation between the Cl- and the d18O data suggests that these values reflect the original composition modified by diffusion.

Today, the use of heavy metals and chemical products industry expanded. The presence of significant amounts of, pollutants in industrial waste water can lead to serious risks to the environment and human health have heavy metals like chromium is one example of the future of salmon knock pond environment. Chromium is an essential element in the diet, but high doses of this element is very dangerous. Hence the use of chemical methods as a tool for the removal of metals from waste water pond be used. The aim of this study was to investigate the mineral kaolin adsorbents for the removal of chromium is water. Thus, the effect of different concentrations of absorbent micro amounts of chromium absorption and variable temperature, pH and electrolytes were studied. During the investigation of spectroscopic instrument (Varian) UV-VIS are used. Comparison of the absorption mechanism of chromium adsorption by the adsorbent with nano-absorbent kaolin kaolin was investigated. According to the studies done in the same conditions of temperature, pH and shaking rate of chromium absorption by nano kaolin kaolin is much more attractive. Therefore, its use as an adsorbent abundant, cheap, accessible, efficient and effective is proposed.

The changes in time and location of surface temperature from a water body has an important effect on climate activities, marine biology, sea currents, salinity and other characteristics of the seas and lakes water. Traditional measurement of temperature is costly and time consumer due to its dispersion and instability. In recent years the use of satellite technology and remote sensing sciences for data acquiring and parameter and lysis of climatology and oceanography is well developed. In this research we used the NOAA’s Satellite images from its AVHRR system to compare the field surface temperature data with the satellite images information. Ten satellite images were used in this project. These images were calibrated with the field data at the exact time of satellite pass above the area. The result was a significant relation between surface temperatures from satellite data with the field work. As the relative error less than %40 between these two data is acceptable, therefore in our observation the maximum error is %21.2 that can be considered it as acceptable. In all stations the result of satellite measurements is usually less than field data that cores ponds with the global result too. As this sea has a vast latitude, therefore the different in the temperature is natural. But we know this factor is not the only cause for surface currents. The information of all satellites were images extracted by ERDAS software, and the “Surfer” software is used to plot the isotherm lines.

According to the Water Framework Directive (WFD) transitional waters should be differentiated according to type and, in some cases, divided into different water bodies. This raises a dilemma in trying to define parts of a continuum. In the sequence of WFD several indices have been proposed including the Estuarine Fish Assessment Index, which can be applied taking an estuary as a whole (EFAI - without water bodies division) or divided in water bodies (EFAI(WB)). The purpose of this work is to analyze the robustness of the Estuarine Fish Assessment Index, based on three different ways of dividing Portuguese estuaries into water bodies according to different criteria (criterion 1 - distance to the estuary mouth, criterion 2 - salinity and criterion 3 - morphology, salinity and human dimension as pressure and state). In this study we evaluated at which degree these three criteria could influence the ecological quality ratio (EQR) results, when the index was applied to water body level (EFAI(WB)). Also, for each estuary, the EQR(WB) results for each criterion of EFAI(WB) were combined and weighted according to the water bodies areas (EFAI overall weighted - EFAI(Ow)). Finally, it was compared if the results obtained for each criterion with the EFAI(OW) were similar to the results of the index application taking the estuary as a whole (EFAI without water bodies division). No significant differences were found in both cases, which indicated that this index is a robust method regarding the division of the estuaries in different water bodies, which is an important element of a fish-based multimetric tool for assessing estuarine ecological quality. However, in some cases, different ecological quality statuses were achieved when applying the EFAI(Ow) or the EFAI. This work addressed several aspects regarding the possible division of water bodies at the WFD context. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The comfort level of the seat has a major effect on the usage of a vehicle; thus, car manufacturers have been working on elevating car seat comfort as much as possible. However, still, the testing and evaluation of comfort are done using exhaustive trial and error testing and evaluation of data. In this thesis, we resort to machine learning and Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) to develop a fully automated approach. Even though this approach has its advantages in minimizing time and using a large set of data, it takes away the degree of freedom of the engineer on making decisions. The focus of this study is on filling the gap in a two-step comfort level evaluation which used pressure mapping with body regions to evaluate the average pressure supported by specific body parts and the Self-Assessment Exam (SAE) questions on evaluation of the person’s interest. This study has created a machine learning algorithm that works on giving a degree of freedom to the engineer in making a decision when mapping pressure values with body regions using ANN. The mapping is done with 92% accuracy and with the help of a Graphical User Interface (GUI) that facilitates the process during the testing time of comfort level evaluation of the car seat, which decreases the duration of the test analysis from days to hours.

High dose rate brachytherapy (HDR) using 192Ir sources is well accepted as an important treatment option and thus requires an accurate dosimetry standard. However, a dosimetry standard for the direct measurement of the absolute dose to water for this particular source type is currently not available. An improved standard for the absorbed dose to water based on Fricke dosimetry of HDR 192Ir brachytherapy sources is presented in this study. The main goal of this paper is to demonstrate the potential usefulness of the Fricke dosimetry technique for the standardization of the quantity absorbed dose to water for 192Ir sources. A molded, double-walled, spherical vessel for water containing the Fricke solution was constructed based on the Fricke system. The authors measured the absorbed dose to water and compared it with the doses calculated using the AAPM TG-43 report. The overall combined uncertainty associated with the measurements using Fricke dosimetry was 1.4% for k = 1, which is better than the uncertainties reported in previous studies. These results are promising; hence, the use of Fricke dosimetry to measure the absorbed dose to water as a standard for HDR 192Ir may be possible in the future.
