Le dimensionnement des ponts et viaducs au Canada se base sur la norme CAN/CSA S6-14. Pour le calcul de ces structures sous des charges extrêmes, des cartes d'aléa sismique sont produites par la Commission géologique du Canada selon un taux d'amortissement de 5 %. La norme propose des taux d'amortissement visqueux élastique de 2 % pour le béton et de 1 % pour l'acier. Un nouveau facteur de correction selon l'amortissement est mentionné dans cette norme pour modifier les spectres de réponse provenant des cartes sismiques. Plusieurs études sur des ouvrages d'art quantifient les taux d'amortissement visqueux élastique entre 1 % et 2 %, confirmant ainsi qu'il est nécessaire d'utiliser un facteur de correction des spectres pour éviter une sous-évaluation des déplacements au niveau du tablier. Le projet de recherche consiste à quantifier le taux d'amortissement visqueux élastique des ponts routiers grâce à des essais in situ sur des ouvrages du Québec. Les essais débutent avec l'acquisition de données à l'aide d'accéléromètres alors que le pont est sous vibrations ambiantes. Une fois les propriétés modales extraites, un essai sous vibrations forcées par balayage des fréquences est effectué, en ciblant les fréquences propres. L'interprétation de la réponse de la structure à ce dernier essai permet de trouver précisément l'amortissement. Une étude paramétrique sur le logiciel OpenSees est aussi effectuée pour évaluer l'impact de la variation du taux d'amortissement utilisé sur les déplacements du tablier lors d'un séisme. Les résultats démontrent que le taux d'amortissement visqueux élastique peut être aussi bas que 1 %, ce qui peut doubler la réponse en déplacements aux joints d'un pont par rapport à une analyse avec 5 % d'amortissement. Le mémoire cherche à clarifier l'utilisation de la norme S6-14, à démontrer l'importance d'utiliser un bon taux d'amortissement et à encourager l'utilisation d'un facteur de correction des spectres adéquat pour calculer la réponse sismique des ponts routiers québécois et canadiens. Des recommandations sont proposées dans ce sens.

Au Québec, l’épandage des sels de déglaçage pendant l’entretien hivernal des routes est l’une des causes de la corrosion des armatures en acier dans les ouvrages routiers en béton armé. La corrosion de l’acier crée des tensions internes dans le béton, ce qui entraine l’éclatement du béton qui enrobe l’armature d’acier. La durée de vie des infrastructures routières est par conséquent réduite et les coûts d’entretien sont augmentés. Le présent projet de recherche est né d’une collaboration entre le ministère des Transports, de la Mobilité durable et de l’Électrification des Transports (MTMDET) et l’Université de Sherbrooke. Il vise à étudier l’utilisation des barres en polymères renforcés de fibres de verre (PRFV), non sujettes à la corrosion dans les dalles en béton armé continu (BAC). Dans cette étude, une section de chaussée de 300 mètres de long a été instrumentée pendant la reconstruction de l’autoroute 40 Ouest à Montréal, pour caractériser le comportement à court et à long terme des dalles en BAC avec des armatures en PRFV. Les résultats expérimentaux montrent que les conditions climatiques affectent considérablement le comportement à la fissuration des dalles en BAC de PRFV et d’acier. Une analyse par éléments finis d’une section de la chaussée a été également réalisée avec le logiciel Abaqus en vue d’étudier l’influence de plusieurs paramètres tels que le taux d’armature longitudinale, les propriétés des barres de PRFV et leur profondeur, l’épaisseur de la dalle, le coefficient de dilatation thermique du béton et l’espacement des armatures transversales sur le comportement de la dalle en BAC de PRFV. Le modèle par éléments finis a été validé avec les résultats expérimentaux obtenus en chantier. Les résultats numériques montrent que le coefficient de dilatation thermique du béton, le taux d’armature longitudinale, les propriétés des barres de PRFV et leur positionnement dans la dalle, l’épaisseur de la dalle constituent les paramètres qui influencent le plus le comportement des dalles en BAC. Pour le dimensionnement des dalles en BAC de PRFV, des taux d’armature ainsi que des propriétés de barres de PRFV ont été proposés en tenant compte des résultats expérimentaux ainsi que de l’analyse par éléments finis.

The Ophira Mini Sling System involves anchoring a midurethral, low-tension tape to the obturator internus muscles bilaterally at the level of the tendinous arc. Success rates in different subsets of patients are still to be defined. This work aims to identify which factors influence the 2-year outcomes of this treatment. Analysis was based on data from a multicenter study. Endpoints for analysis included objective measurements: 1-h pad-weight (PWT), and cough stress test (CST), and questionnaires: International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire-Short Form (ICIQ-SF) and Urinary Distress Inventory (UDI)-6. A logistic regression analysis evaluated possible risk factors for failure. In all, 124 female patients with stress urinary incontinence (SUI) underwent treatment with the Ophira procedure. All patients completed 1 year of follow-up, and 95 complied with the 2-year evaluation. Longitudinal analysis showed no significant differences between results at 1 and 2 years. The 2-year overall objective results were 81 (85.3%) patients dry, six (6.3%) improved, and eight (8.4%) incontinent. A multivariate analysis revealed that previous anti-incontinence surgery was the only factor that significantly influenced surgical outcomes. Two years after treatment, women with previous failed surgeries had an odds ratio (OR) for treatment failure (based on PWT) of 4.0 [95% confidence interval (CI) 1.02-15.57). The Ophira procedure is an effective option for SUI treatment, with durable good results. Previous surgeries were identified as the only significant risk factor, though previously operated patients showed an acceptable success rate.

Perianal fistulizing Crohn's disease is one of the most severe phenotypes of inflammatory bowel diseases. Combined therapy with seton placement and anti-TNF therapy is the most common strategy for this condition. The aim of this study was to analyze the rates of complete perianal remission after combined therapy for perianal fistulizing Crohn's disease. This was a retrospective observational study with perianal fistulizing Crohn's disease patients submitted to combined therapy from four inflammatory bowel diseases referral centers. We analyzed patients' demographic characteristics, Montreal classification, concomitant medication, classification of the fistulae, occurrence of perianal complete remission and recurrence after remission. Complete perianal remission was defined as absence of drainage from the fistulae associated with seton removal. A total of 78 patients were included, 44 (55.8%) females with a mean age of 33.8 (±15) years. Most patients were treated with Infliximab, 66.2%, than with Adalimumab, 33.8%. Complex fistulae were found in 52/78 patients (66.7%). After a medium follow-up of 48.2 months, 41/78 patients (52.6%) had complete perianal remission (95% CI: 43.5%-63.6%). Recurrence occurred in four (9.8%) patients (95% CI: 0.7%-18.8%) in an average period of 74.8 months. Combined therapy lead to favorable and durable results in perianal fistulizing Crohn's disease.

Objetivou-se avaliar os fatores demográficos, sócio-econômicos e de estilo de vida associados à qualidade da dieta de adultos residentes na Região Metropolitana de São Paulo, Brasil. Estudo transversal, por meio de inquérito domiciliar, de base populacional, foi realizado no Distrito do Butantã e nos municípios de Itapecerica da Serra, Embu e Taboão da Serra. Utilizaram-se dados de um questionário e um recordatório de 24 horas de 1.840 adultos de 20 anos ou mais, de ambos os sexos, incluídos em um inquérito de saúde (ISA-SP). A qualidade da dieta foi avaliada através do índice de qualidade da dieta (IQD) adaptado para a realidade local. Utilizou-se análise de regressão linear para avaliar a associação entre o IQD e as demais variáveis. A maioria da população (75%) apresentou dieta que necessita de melhora. Observaram-se médias baixas para os componentes: frutas, verduras e legumes, leite e derivados. Número de bens de consumo duráveis, escolaridade do chefe da família e ter 60 anos ou mais se associaram ao IQD em homens. Para as mulheres, a faixa etária se associou ao IQD. Em ambos os modelos, o consumo de calorias se manteve como variável de ajuste.

According to some estimates, world's population growth is expected about 50% over the next 50 years. Thus, one of the greatest challenges faced by Engineering is to find effective options to food storage and conservation. Some researchers have investigated how to design durable buildings for storing and conserving food. Nowadays, developing concrete with mechanical resistance for room temperatures is a parameter that can be achieved easily. On the other hand, associating it to low temperature of approximately 35 °C negative requires less empiricism, being necessary a suitable dosage method and a careful selection of the material constituents. This ongoing study involves these parameters. The presented concrete was analyzed through non-destructive tests that examines the material properties periodically and verifies its physical integrity. Concrete with and without incorporated air were studied. The results demonstrated that both are resistant to freezing.

Environmental issues due to increases in emissions of air pollutants and greenhouse gases are driving the development of clean energy delivery technologies such as fuel cells. Low temperature Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFC) use hydrogen as a fuel and their only emission is water. While significant advances have been made in recent years, a major limitation of the current technology is the cost and materials limitations of the proton conduction membrane. The proton exchange membrane performs three critical functions in the PEMFC membrane electrode assembly (MEA): (i) conduction of protons with minimal resistance from the anode (where they are generated from hydrogen) to the cathode (where they combine with oxygen and electrons, from the external circuit or load), (ii) providing electrical insulation between the anode and cathode to prevent shorting, and (iii) providing a gas impermeable barrier to prevent mixing of the fuel (hydrogen) and oxidant. The PFSA (perfluorosulphonic acid) family of membranes is currently the best developed proton conduction membrane commercially available, but these materials are limited to operation below 100oC (typically 80oC, or lower) due to the thermochemical limitations of this polymer. For both mobile and stationary applications, fuel cell companies require more durable, cost effective membrane technologies capable of delivering enhanced performance at higher temperatures (typically 120oC, or higher. This is driving research into a wide range of novel organic and inorganic materials with the potential to be good proton conductors and form coherent membranes. There are several research efforts recently reported in the literature employing inorganic nanomaterials. These include functionalised silica phosphates [1,2], fullerene [3] titania phosphates [4], zirconium pyrophosphate [5]. This work addresses the functionalisation of titania particles with phosphoric acid. Proton conductivity measurements are given together with structural properties.

Background: Inflammatory events antecede established renal injury in rats with 5/6 renal ablation (Nx), as indicated by the beneficial effects of early, uninterrupted treatment with mycophenolate mofetil (MMF). Angiotensin II also exerts a major pathogenic role at this initial phase. We investigated whether losartan (L) or L+MMF treatment, started early, and L+MMF treatment, started late, would exert lasting renoprotection in Nx even after being discontinued. Methods: Adult male Munich-Wistar rats underwent Nx and were divided into three groups: Nx (untreated), Nx(L) (given L), and Nx(LMMF) (given L and MMF). Protocol 1: treatments began on day 1, and ceased on day 30, after Nx. Protocol 2: L+MMF treatment began on day 30 and ceased on day 60. Results: Protocol 1: on day 30, hypertension, albuminuria and renal injury were strongly attenuated in Groups Nx(L) and Nx(LMMF). On day 120, these abnormalities were still attenuated in group Nx(LMMF). Protocol 2: on day 120, all parameters were similar between this late Nx(LMMF) group and untreated Nx. Conclusion: In Nx, temporary suppression of early, transitory hemodynamic/inflammatory phenomena affords relatively durable renoprotection even after treatment discontinuation. Objectives: The aim of this study was to explore the therapeutic opportunities of each step of 3-step etch-and-rinse adhesives. Methods: Etch-and-rinse adhesive systems are the oldest of the multi-generation evolution of resin bonding systems. In the 3-step version, they involve acid-etching, priming and application of a separate adhesive. Each step can accomplish multiple goals. Acid-etching, using 32-37% phosphoric acid (pH 0.1-0.4) not only simultaneously etches enamel and dentin, but the low pH kills many residual bacteria. Results: Some etchants include anti-microbial compounds such as benzalkonium chloride that also inhibits matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) in dentin. Primers are usually water and HEMA-rich solutions that ensure complete expansion of the collagen fibril meshwork and wet the collagen with hydrophilic monomers. However, water alone can re-expand dried dentin and can also serve as a vehicle for protease inhibitors or protein cross-linking agents that may increase the durability of resin-dentin bonds. In the future, ethanol or other water-free solvents may serve as dehydrating primers that may also contain antibacterial quaternary ammonium methacrylates to inhibit dentin MMPs and increase the durability of resin-dentin bonds. The complete evaporation of solvents is nearly impossible. Significance: Manufacturers may need to optimize solvent concentrations. Solvent-free adhesives can seal resin-dentin interfaces with hydrophobic resins that may also contain fluoride and antimicrobial compounds. Etch-and-rinse adhesives produce higher resin-dentin bonds that are more durable than most 1 and 2-step adhesives. Incorporation of protease inhibitors in etchants and/or cross-linking agents in primers may increase the durability of resin-dentin bonds. Forecasting category or industry sales is a vital component of a company's planning and control activities. Sales for most mature durable product categories are dominated by replacement purchases. Previous sales models which explicitly incorporate a component of sales due to replacement assume there is an age distribution for replacements of existing units which remains constant over time. However, there is evidence that changes in factors such as product reliability/durability, price, repair costs, scrapping values, styling and economic conditions will result in changes in the mean replacement age of units. This paper develops a model for such time-varying replacement behaviour and empirically tests it in the Australian automotive industry. Both longitudinal census data and the empirical analysis of the replacement sales model confirm that there has been a substantial increase in the average aggregate replacement age for motor vehicles over the past 20 years. Further, much of this variation could be explained by real price increases and a linear temporal trend. Consequently, the time-varying model significantly outperformed previous models both in terms of fitting and forecasting the sales data. Copyright (C) 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

A maioria das infra-estruturas de transportes, nomeadamente os pavimentos rodoviários e aeroportuários, são constituídas por misturas betuminosas, o que permite um bom desempenho e uma adequada durabilidade, nas condições usuais de serviço. As misturas betuminosas são ainda amplamente utilizadas na construção de zonas de estacionamento de veículos, tendo-se verificado recentemente a sua aplicação também em infra-estruturas ferroviárias. Face à necessidade de melhorar o desempenho das vias-férreas, permitindo uma concepção mais durável de linhas de alta velocidade e uma redução dos custos da sua manutenção, tem-se vindo a desenvolver diversos estudos para promover a utilização de novos materiais, principalmente através da incorporação de misturas betuminosas. O presente trabalho tem como objectivo a caracterização do comportamento mecânico de misturas betuminosas a aplicar em infra-estruturas de transportes. Como metodologia para o estudo do comportamento mecânico das misturas betuminosas foram realizados em laboratório ensaios de cargas repetidas, nomeadamente, ensaios de flexão em quatro pontos para determinação da rigidez e da resistência à fadiga e ensaios de compressão triaxiais cíclicos para avaliação do comportamento à deformação permanente. A resistência à fadiga das misturas betuminosas em estudo foi avaliada através do ensaio de flexão em quatro pontos, com extensão controlada, e aplicação de um carregamento sinusoidal com diferentes frequências, de acordo com o procedimento de ensaio da norma europeia EN 12697-24 (2004 + A1: 2007). A resistência à deformação permanente das misturas betuminosas foi analisada através de ensaios de compressão triaxiais cíclicos, submetendo-as a uma tensão de confinamento estática pela aplicação parcial de vácuo e a uma pressão axial cíclica sob a forma rectangular, de acordo com a norma europeia EN 12697-25 (2004). O conhecimento destas propriedades mecânicas assume particular importância ao nível da formulação das misturas betuminosas, do dimensionamento de uma estrutura ou do estabelecimento de uma adequada solução para uma obra de reabilitação duma infra-estrutura de transportes. Para este estudo foi utilizado um modelo físico construído numa fossa no LNEC, com o propósito de serem testadas três substruturas ferroviárias não convencionais, utilizando sub-balastro betuminoso. A selecção das substruturas foi efectuada após uma análise de várias secções de estruturas já testadas e aplicadas noutros países, de forma a proporcionar comparações fiáveis entre elas. Os resultados obtidos mostraram que a mistura betuminosa AC20 base 50/70 (MB) aplicada na camada de sub-balastro é adequada para ser aplicada nas infra-estruturas de transportes pois apresenta um bom desempenho à fadiga e à deformação permanente. Através dos ensaios efectuados foi ainda possível entender a importante influência das características volumétricas, principalmente da porosidade para o bom comportamento da mistura betuminosa.

A adequada previsão do comportamento diferido do betão, designadamente da retracção, é essencial no projecto de uma obra de grandes dimensões, permitindo conceber, dimensionar e adoptar as disposições construtivas para um comportamento estrutural que satisfaça os requisitos de segurança, utilização e durabilidade. O actual momento é marcado por uma transição em termos da regulamentação de estruturas, com a eminente substituição da regulamentação nacional por regulamentação europeia. No caso das estruturas de betão, o Regulamento de Estruturas de Betão Armado e Pré-Esforçado (REBAP), em vigor desde 1983, será substituído pelo Eurocódigo 2. Paralelamente, a Federation International du Betón publicou o Model Code 2010 (MC2010), um documento que certamente terá forte influência na evolução da regulamentação das estruturas de betão. Neste contexto, o presente trabalho tem como objectivo estabelecer uma comparação entre os diferentes modelos de previsão da retracção incluídos nos documentos normativos referidos, identificando as principais diferenças e semelhanças entre eles e quantificando a influência dos diferentes factores considerados na sua formulação, de forma a avaliar o impacto que a introdução destes modelos de previsão irá ter no projecto de estruturas de betão. Com o propósito de aferir a forma como estes modelos reflectem a realidade do fenómeno em estudo, procedeu-se à aplicação destes modelos de previsão ao betão de duas obras cujo comportamento estrutural é observado pelo LNEC, concretamente a ponte Miguel Torga, sobre o rio Douro, na Régua, e a ponte sobre o rio Angueira, no distrito de Bragança. Em ambas as obras tinha sido efectuada a caracterização in situ da retracção, tendo-se comparado os valores experimentais assim obtidos com os valores provenientes da aplicação dos modelos de previsão considerados neste trabalho. Finalmente são apresentadas algumas conclusões obtidas com o trabalho desenvolvido nesta dissertação, bem como algumas sugestões para desenvolvimentos futuros.

Considering ancient monuments and historical buildings, it seems that these mortars have proved to be durable and reliable materials. The restoration and maintenance of old renders is one of the key aspects of correct rehabilitation practice. The ideal course of action is to replace the damaged material by a material with compatible characteristics.The study in development presents the chemical, physical and morphologic analysis performed for ancient air lime mortars belonging to historical monuments: Santa Marta Fortress in the coast line Lisbon-Cascais dated from XVII century and Defense Wall of Lisbon dated from XI century, which layout could be associated to roman period. It is important to underline that the studied samples of ancient portuguese air lime mortars, have been submitted during centuries to very severe maritime environment that includes daily cycles of wet/dry, wind, friction and the constant presence of salts, generally aggressive. However, they show very good performance and conservation state, unlike most of the new air lime mortars, which are generally considered weak, not very durable, materials. This work is included in a study intending to determine key factors to the durability of these ancient materials in presence of water. Visible reaction rims around some aggregates suggests the occurrence of pozzolanic reactions between aggregates and the lime binder that creates neoformation products, such as calcium-silico-aluminates, which seems be, besides the pores filling, the responsible for the resistance and cohesion of these ancient mortars submitted to aggressive humid environments.
