A newly designed and structurally characterized cell permeable diformyl-p-cresol based receptor (HL) selectively senses the AsO33- ion up to ca. 4.1 ppb in aqueous media over the other competitive ions at biological pH through an intermolecular H-bonding induced CHEF (chelationenhanced fluorescence) process, established by detailed experimental and theoretical studies. This biofriendly probe is highly competent in recognizing the existence of AsO33- ions in a living organism by developing an image under a fluorescence microscope and useful to estimate the amount of arsenite ions in various water samples.

A new cell permeable quinazoline based receptor (1) selectively senses HSO4- ions of nanomolar region in 0.1 M HEPES buffer (ethanol-water: 1/5, v/v) at biological pH over other competitive ions through the proton transfer followed by hydrogen bond formation and subsequent anion coordination to yield the LHSO4]-LH+center dot 3H(2)O (2) ensemble, which has been crystallographically characterised to ensure the structure property relationship. This non-cytotoxic HSO4- ion selective biomarker has great potential to recognize the intercellular distribution of HSO4- ions in HeLa cells under fluorescence microscope.

In this work, we have reported the synthesis of dahlia flower-like ZnO nanostructures consisting of human finger-like nanorods by the hydrothermal method at 120 degrees C and without using any capping agent. Optical properties of the samples, including UV-vis absorption and photoluminescence (PL) emission characteristics are determined by dispersing the samples in water as well as in ethanol media. The quenching of PL emission intensity along-with the red shifting of the PL emission peak are observed when the samples are dispersed in water in comparison to those obtained after dispersing the samples in ethanol. It has been found that PL emission characteristic, particularly the spectral nature of PL emission, of the samples remains almost unaltered (except some improvement in UV PL emission) even after thermally annealing it for 2 h at the temperature of 300 degrees C. Also the synthesized powder samples, kept in a plastic container, showed a very stable PL emission even after 15 months of synthesis. Therefore, the synthesized samples might be useful for their applications in future optoelectronics devices. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We explore the potential energy landscape of structure breaking binary mixtures (SBBM) where two constituents dislike each other, yet remain macroscopically homogeneous at intermediate to high temperatures. Interestingly, we find that the origin of strong composition dependent non-ideal behaviour lies in its phase separated inherent structure. The inherent structure (IS) of SBBM exhibits bi-continuous phase as is usually formed during spinodal decomposition. We draw analogy of this correlation between non-ideality and phase separation in IS to explain observation of non-ideality in real aqueous mixtures of small amphiphilic solutes, containing both hydrophilic and hydrophobic groups. Although we have not been able to obtain IS of these liquids, we find that even at room temperature these liquids sustain formation of fluctuating, transient bi-continuous phase, with limited lifetime (tau less than or similar to 20 ps). While in the model (A, B) binary mixture, the non-ideal composition dependence can be considered as a fluctuation from a phase separated state, a similar scenario is expected to be responsible for the unusually strong non-ideality in these aqueous binary mixtures.

Local heterogeneity is ubiquitous in natural aqueous systems. It can be caused locally by external biomolecular subsystems like proteins, DNA, micelles and reverse micelles, nanoscopic materials etc., but can also be intrinsic to the thermodynamic nature of the aqueous solution itself (like binary mixtures or at the gas-liquid interface). The altered dynamics of water in the presence of such diverse surfaces has attracted considerable attention in recent years. As these interfaces are quite narrow, only a few molecular layers thick, they are hard to study by conventional methods. The recent development of two dimensional infra-red (2D-IR) spectroscopy allows us to estimate length and time scales of such dynamics fairly accurately. In this work, we present a series of interesting studies employing two dimensional infra-red spectroscopy (2D-IR) to investigate (i) the heterogeneous dynamics of water inside reverse micelles of varying sizes, (ii) supercritical water near the Widom line that is known to exhibit pronounced density fluctuations and also study (iii) the collective and local polarization fluctuation of water molecules in the presence of several different proteins. The spatio-temporal correlation of confined water molecules inside reverse micelles of varying sizes is well captured through the spectral diffusion of corresponding 2D-IR spectra. In the case of supercritical water also, we observe a strong signature of dynamic heterogeneity from the elongated nature of the 2D-IR spectra. In this case the relaxation is ultrafast. We find remarkable agreement between the different tools employed to study the relaxation of density heterogeneity. For aqueous protein solutions, we find that the calculated dielectric constant of the respective systems unanimously shows a noticeable increment compared to that of neat water. However, the `effective' dielectric constant for successive layers shows significant variation, with the layer adjacent to the protein having a much lower value. Relaxation is also slowest at the surface. We find that the dielectric constant achieves the bulk value at distances more than 3 nm from the surface of the protein.

Balanced white light emitting systems are important for applications in electronic devices. Of all types of white light emitting materials, gels have the special advantage of easy processability. Here we report two white light emitting gels, which are based on lanthanide cholate self-assembly. The components are commercially available and the gels are prepared by simply sonicating their aqueous solutions (1-3min), unlike any other known white light emitting systems. Their CIE co-ordinates, calculated from the luminescence data, fall in the white light range with a correlated color temperature of ca. 5600 K.

Reduced graphene oxide (RGO) is prepared by thermal exfoliation of graphite oxide in air. Symmetric RGO/RGO supercapacitors are constructed in a non-aqueous electrolyte and characterized. The values of energy density are 44 Wh kg(-1) and 15 Wh kg(-1), respectively at 0.15 and 8.0 kW kg(-1). The symmetric supercapacitor exhibits stable charge/discharge cycling tested up to 3000 cycles. The low-temperature thermal exfoliation approach is convenient for mass production of RGO at low cost and it can be used as electrode material for energy storage applications. (c) The Author(s) 2015. We report the synthesis of high quality vanadium dioxide (VO2) thin films by a novel spray pyrolysis technique, namely ultrasonic nebulized spray pyrolysis of aqueous combustion mixture (UNSPACM). This simple and cost effective two step process involves synthesis of a V2O5 film on an LaAlO3 substrate followed by a controlled reduction to form single phase VO2. The formation of M1 phase (p21/c) is confirmed by Raman spectroscopic studies. A thermally activated metal-insulator transition (MIT) was observed at 61 degrees C, where the resistivity changes by four orders of magnitude. Activation energies for the low conduction phase and the high conduction phase were obtained from temperature variable resistance measurements. The infrared spectra also show a dramatic change in reflectance from 13% to over 90% in the wavelength range of 7-15 mu m. This indicates the suitability of the films for optical switching applications at infrared frequencies.

Experimental studies (circular dichroism and ultra-violet (UV) absorption spectra) and large scale atomistic molecular dynamics simulations (accompanied by order parameter analyses) are combined to establish a number of remarkable (and unforeseen) structural transformations of protein myoglobin in aqueous ethanol mixture at various ethanol concentrations. The following results are particularly striking. (1) Two well-defined structural regimes, one at x(EtOH) similar to 0.05 and the other at x(EtOH) similar to 0.25, characterized by formation of distinct partially folded conformations and separated by a unique partially unfolded intermediate state at x(EtOH) similar to 0.15, are identified. (2) Existence of non-monotonic composition dependence of (i) radius of gyration, (ii) long range contact order, (iii) residue specific solvent accessible surface area of tryptophan, and (iv) circular dichroism spectra and UV-absorption peaks are observed. Interestingly at x(EtOH) similar to 0.15, time averaged value of the contact order parameter of the protein reaches a minimum, implying that this conformational state can be identified as a molten globule state. Multiple structural transformations well known in water-ethanol binary mixture appear to have considerably stronger effects on conformation and dynamics of the protein. We compare the present results with studies in water-dimethyl sulfoxide mixture where also distinct structural transformations are observed along with variation of co-solvent composition. The remarkable capability of nature to design and create excellent self-assembled nano-structures, especially in the biological world, has motivated chemists to mimic such systems with synthetic molecular and supramolecular systems. The hierarchically organized self-assembly of low molecular weight gelators (LMWGs) based on non-covalent interactions has been proven to be a useful tool in the development of well-defined nanostructures. Among these, the self-assembly of sugar-derived LMWGs has received immense attention because of their propensity to furnish biocompatible, hierarchical, supramolecular architectures that are macroscopically expressed in gel formation. This review sheds light on various aspects of sugar-derived LMWGs, uncovering their mechanisms of gelation, structural analysis, and tailorable properties, and their diverse applications such as stimuli-responsiveness, sensing, self-healing, environmental problems, and nano and biomaterials synthesis.

In this article, the SrFeO3-delta photocatalyst was synthesized by a solution combustion method and applied for the photocatalytic degradation of aqueous nitrobenzene in the presence and absence of H2O2. The SrFeO3-delta photocatalyst was characterized by XRD, FT-IR, FE-SEM, TEM, TG-DTG, XPS, and UV visible spectroscopy. The band gap energy of SrFeO3-delta was found to be 3.75 eV which lies in the UV region. The XPS results indicate that the oxidation state of Sr and Fe in SrFeO3-delta was 2+ and 3+, respectively, and the surface atomic ratio of Sr and Fe is 0.995. The photocatalytic activity reveals that the degradation of nitrobenzene over the SrFeO3-delta catalyst itself (UV/SFO) is superior compared to SrFeO3-delta in the presence of H2O2 (UV/SFO/H2O2) with a degradation efficiency of 99-96%. The degradation of nitrobenzene obeys first-order kinetics in both UV/SFO and UV/SFO/H2O2 processes. The decrease in degradation efficiency with UV/SFO/H2O2 was attributed due to the formation of strontium carbonate on the photocatalyst surface.

Changes in the protonation and deprotonation of amino acid residues in proteins play a key role in many biological processes and pathways. Here, we report calculations of the free-energy profile for the protonation deprotonation reaction of the 20 canonical alpha amino acids in aqueous solutions using ab initio Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics simulations coupled with metad-ynamics sampling. We show here that the calculated change in free energy of the dissociation reaction provides estimates of the multiple pK(a) values of the amino acids that are in good agreement with experiment. We use the bond-length-dependent number of the protons coordinated to the hydroxyl oxygen of the carboxylic and the amine groups as the collective variables to explore the free-energy profiles of the Bronsted acid-base chemistry of amino acids in aqueous solutions. We ensure that the amino acid undergoing dissociation is solvated by at least three hydrations shells with all water molecules included in the simulations. The method works equally well for amino acids with neutral, acidic and basic side chains and provides estimates of the multiple pK(a) values with a mean relative error, with respect to experimental results, of 0.2 pK(a) units.

In the present study a versatile and efficient adsorbent with high adsorption capacity for adsorption of Congo red dye in aqueous solution at ambient temperature without adjusting any pH is presented over the Ag modified calcium hydroxyapatite (CaHAp). CaHAp and Ag-doped CaHAp materials were synthesized using facile aqueous precipitation method. The physico-chemical properties of the materials were determined by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-Visible spectroscopy, N-2 physisorption and acidity was determined by n-butylamine titration and pyridine adsorption methods. XRD analysis confirmed all adsorbents exhibit hexagonal CaHAp structure with P6(3)/m space group. TEM analysis confirms the rod like morphology of the adsorbents and the average length of the rods were in the range of 40-45 nm. Pyridine adsorption results indicate increase in number of Lewis acid sites with Ag doping in CaHAp. Adsorption capacity of CaHAp was found increased with Ag content in the adsorbents. Ag (10): CaHAp adsorbent showed superior adsorption performance among all the adsorbents for various concentrations of Congo red (CR) dye in aqueous solutions. The amount of CR dye adsorbed on Ag (10): CaHAp was found to be 49.89-267.81 mg g(-1) for 50-300 ppm in aqueous solution. A good correlation between adsorption capacity and acidity of the adsorbents was observed. The adsorption kinetic data of adsorbents fitted well with pseudo second-order kinetic model with correlation coefficients ranged from 0.998 to 0.999. The equilibrium adsorption data was found to best fit to the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. (C) 2015 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The complex formation of alkyl ammonium salts by water-soluble carboxylatopillar5] arene (CP5A) in aqueous medium is reported. p-Xylene diammonium salt and a series of secondary alkyl ammonium salts with various alkyl groups have been prepared and investigated for complex formation. All the ammonium salts exhibit strong host-guest complexation with CP5A under neutral aqueous conditions. H-1 NMR, H-1 DOSY and 2D NOESY NMR experiments have been performed to characterize these inclusion complexes. In this study, the hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions govern the complex formation leading to the formation of pseudorotaxane species. Five pseudo2] rotaxanes and one pseudo3] rotaxane were obtained whose association constant values and stoichiometry were evaluated by an NMR titration method. The results indicate the use of ammonium salts as new complimentary synthons for CP5A in aqueous medium, adding to the repertoire of existing recognition motifs such as paraquat and 1,4-bis(pyridinium) derivatives.
