Indium-tin oxide films have been deposited by reactive electron beam evaporation of ln+Sn alloy both in neutral and ionized oxygen environments. A low-energy ion source (fabricated in-house) has been used. Films deposited with neutral oxygen exhibited very low optical transmittance (5% at 550 nm). Highly transparent (85%) and low-resistivity (5 X 10(-4) Omega cm) films have been deposited in ionized oxygen at ambient substrate temperature. Optical and electrical properties of the films have been studied as a function of deposition parameters. (C) 2002 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers.

Rammed earth is an energy efficient and low carbon emission alternative for load bearing walls. This paper attempts to examine the influence of clay content and moisture content on the compressive strength of cement stabilised rammed earth (CSRE) through experimental investigations. Compressive strength of CSRE prisms was monitored both in dry and wet (saturated) conditions. Major conclusions of the study are:(a) Optimum clay content for maximum compressive strength is about 16%, (b) the strength of CSRE is sensitive to the moisture content at the time of testing, (c) Strength in saturated condition is less than half of the dry strength and (d) Water absorption (saturated water content) increases as the clay content of the soil mix increases and it is in the range of 12 to 16% for the CRSE prisms with 8% cement.

ZnO nanostructured films were deposited at room temperature on glass substrates and cotton fabrics by activated reactive evaporation in a single step without using metal catalyst or templates. Morphological observation has shown that the nanostructured film contains seaurchin-like structures, and this seaurchin containing large number of randomly grown ZnO nanoneedles. Microstructural analysis revealed the single crystalline nature of the grown nanoneedles and their growth direction was indentified to be along [0002]. PL spectrum of nanostructured films has shown a relatively weak near-band-edge emission peak at 380 nm, and a significant broad peak at 557 nm due to the oxygen vacancy-related emission. ZnO nanostructured films grown on glass substrates and cotton fabrics have shown good photocatalytic activity against rhodamine B.

Glioblastoma is the most common and malignant form of primary astrocytoma. Upon investigation of the insulin-like growth factor (IGF) pathway, we found the IGF2BP3/IMP3 transcript and protein to be up-regulated in GBMs but not in lower grade astrocytomas (p<0.0001). IMP3 is an RNA binding protein known to bind to the 5'-untranslated region of IGF-2 mRNA, thereby activating its translation. Overexpression-and knockdown-based studies establish a role for IMP3 in promoting proliferation, anchorage-independent growth, invasion, and chemoresistance. IMP3 overexpressing B16F10 cells also showed increased tumor growth, angiogenesis, and metastasis, resulting in poor survival in a mouse model. Additionally, the infiltrating front, perivascular, and subpial regions in a majority of the GBMs stained positive for IMP3. Furthermore, two different murine glioma models were used to substantiate the above findings. In agreement with the translation activation functions of IMP3, we also found increased IGF-2 protein in the GBM tumor samples without a corresponding increase in its transcript levels. Also, in vitro IMP3 overexpression/knockdown modulated the IGF-2 protein levels without altering its transcript levels. Additionally, IGF-2 neutralization and supplementation studies established that the proproliferative effects of IMP3 were indeed mediated through IGF-2. Concordantly, PI3K and MAPK, the downstream effectors of IGF-2, are activated by IMP3 and are found to be essential for IMP3-induced cell proliferation. Thus, we have identified IMP3 as a GBM-specific proproliferative and proinvasive marker acting through IGF-2 resulting in the activation of oncogenic PI3K and MAPK pathways.

We report a low-temperature synthesis of La1.95Na0.05NiO4 from NaOH flux, La0.97K0.03NiO3 and La0.95K0.05Ni0.85Cu0.15O3 phases from KOH flux at 400 degreesC. Alkali-doped LaNiO3 can be prepared in KOH, but not in NaOH flux and La2NiO4 can be prepared in NaOH, but not in KOH flux. The flux-grown oxides were characterized by powder X-ray Rietveld profile analysis and electron microscopy. Sodium doped La2NiO4 crystallizes in orthorhombic structure and potassium doped LaNiO3-phases crystallizes in rhombohedral structure. La1.95Na0.05NiO4 is weakly paramagnetic and semiconducting while La0.97K0.03NiO3 and La0.95K0.05Ni0.85Cu0.15O3 show Pauli paramagnetic and metallic behavior. Mechanisms that control the volume changes behavior of foundation soils are well understood. The changes that occur in the behavior of soil due to migration of pollutants are not well understood. The extent of changes that occur in the presence of small concentration of contaminants can be predicted based on changes in the thickness of double layer and associated fabric changes. Interactions that occur with strong contaminants depends on the type of soil, type and concentration of contamination and duration of interaction etc It has been shown that different concentrations (1N and 4N) of sodium hydroxide solution causes abnormal changes on volume change behaviour of soil due to mineralogical changes. An attempt is made in this paper to stabilize contaminated soil using fly ash, after establishing its stability in alkali solutions. It was found that the effectiveness of fly ash to control the alkali induced heave increases with fly ash content incorporated into the soil. X-ray diffraction studies reveal that the mineralogical changes that occur in soil due to alkali interaction are inhibited by the presence of fly ash.

The properties of the soils can change drastically due to the presence of contaminants leading to several geotechnical failures founded on them. One important pollutant that can have considerable effect is the alkali released from varies industries. It is known that alkali solutions can increase the swelling of soil containing both expansive and non-expansive minerals. Many attempts to control this alkali-induced heave in soils through chemical agents were not successful. With a view to study the use of fly ash to stabilize alkali contaminated soil, the behavior of soils containing 25% and 50% of fly ash has been studied in the presence of 2N-alkali solution. Results of volume change behavior of non-expansive soil containing kaolinite clay mineral in the presence of fly ash showed that it is effective to control the alkali induced swelling in the soil. The effectiveness increases with an increase in the percentage of fly ash in soils. Detailed X-ray diffraction and SEM studies showed that the mineralogical changes that occur in soil due to alkali interaction are inhibited in the presence of fly ash.

The storage capacity of an activated carbon bed is studied using a 2D transport model with constant inlet flow conditions. The predicted filling times and variation in bed pressure and temperature are in good agreement with experimental observations obtained using a 1.82 L prototype ANG storage cylinder. Storage efficiencies based on the maximum achievable V/V (volume of gas/volume of container) and filling times are used to quantify the performance of the charging process. For the high permeability beds used in the experiments, storage efficiencies are controlled by the rate of heat removal. Filling times, defined as the time at which the bed pressure reaches 3.5 MPa, range from 120 to 3.4 min for inlet flow rates of 1.0 L min(-1) and 30.0 L min(-1), respectively. The corresponding storage efficiencies, eta(s), vary from 90% to 76%, respectively. Simulations with L/D ratios ranging from 0.35 to 7.8 indicate that the storage efficiencies can be improved with an increase in the LID ratios and/or with water cooled convection. Thus for an inlet flow rate of 30.0 L min(-1), an eta(s) value of 90% can be obtained with water cooling for an L/D ratio of 7.8 and a filling time of a few minutes. In the absence of water cooling the eta(s) value reduces to 83% at the same L/D ratio. Our study suggests that with an appropriate choice of cylinder dimensions, solutions based on convective cooling during adsorptive storage are possible with some compromise in the storage capacity.
