[EU]Proiektu honen helburua, Makina eta Motor Termiko sailean dagoen aire girotu, aireztatze eta berogailu sistema elikatzen duen makinaren analisi bat egitea da. Makina behar duen bezala lan egiten duen eta bulegoetan airearen kalitatea bermatzen baden ikusiko dugu. Hortaz, testu honek aurreko egoerak betetzen diren edo ez argituko du eta ezezko kasua izatekotan funtzionamendu normalera bueltatzeko aukerak proposatuko dira. Horretarako neurketak bai bulegoetan egingo dira eta baita makinan ere. Datu hauek (tenperatuak, emariak, hezetasuna, eta abar…) Excel horri batean gordeko dira gero taulak lortzeko eta errazago identifikatzeko non dauden arazoak. Climate change is becoming a serious issue for the construction industry, since the time scales at which climate change takes place can be expected to show a true impact on the thermal performance of buildings and HVAC systems. In predicting this future building performance by means of building simulation, the underlying assumptions regarding thermal comfort conditions and the related heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) control set points become important. This article studies the thermal performance of a reference office building with mixedmode ventilation in the UK, using static and adaptive thermal approaches, for a series of time horizons (2020, 2050 and 2080). Results demonstrate the importance of the implementation of adaptive thermal comfort models, and underpin the case for its use in climate change impact studies. Adaptive thermal comfort can also be used by building designers to make buildings more resilient towards change. © 2010 International Building Performance Simulation Association (IBPSA).

Space heating accounts for a large portion of the world's carbon dioxide emissions. Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHPs) are a technology which can reduce carbon emissions from heating and cooling. GSHP system performance is however highly sensitive to deviation from design values of the actual annual energy extraction/rejection rates from/to the ground. In order to prevent failure and/or performance deterioration of GSHP systems it is possible to incorporate a safety factor in the design of the GSHP by over-sizing the ground heat exchanger (GHE). A methodology to evaluate the financial risk involved in over-sizing the GHE is proposed is this paper. A probability based approach is used to evaluate the economic feasibility of a hypothetical full-size GSHP system as compared to four alternative Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system configurations. The model of the GSHP system is developed in the TRNSYS energy simulation platform and calibrated with data from an actual hybrid GSHP system installed in the Department of Earth Science, University of Oxford, UK. Results of the analysis show that potential savings from a full-size GSHP system largely depend on projected HVAC system efficiencies and gas and electricity prices. Results of the risk analysis also suggest that a full-size GSHP with auxiliary back up is potentially the most economical system configuration. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.

Tetra-n-butyl-ammonium bromide (TBAB) clathrate hydrate slurry (CHS) is one kind of secondary refrigerants, which is promising to be applied into air-conditioning or latent-heat transportation systems as a thermal storage or cold carrying medium for energy saving. It is a solid-liquid two phase mixture which is easy to produce and has high latent heat and good fluidity. In this paper, the heat transfer characteristics of TBAB slurry were investigated in a horizontal stainless steel tube under different solid mass fractions and flow velocities with constant heat flux. One velocity region of weakened heat transfer was found. Moreover, TBAB CHS was treated as a kind of Bingham fluids, and the influences of the solid particles, flow velocity and types of flow on the forced convective heat transfer coefficients of TBAB CHS were investigated. At last, criterial correlations of Nusselt number for laminar and turbulent flows in the form of power function were summarized, and the error with experimental results was within 20%.

At 8.18pm on 2 September 1998, Swissair Flight 111 (SR 111), took off from New York’s JFK airport bound for Geneva, Switzerland. Tragically, the MD-11 aircraft never arrived. According to the crash investigation report, published on 27 March 2003, electrical arcing in the ceiling void cabling was the most likely cause of the fire that brought down the aircraft. No one on board was aware of the disaster unfolding in the ceiling of the aircraft and, when a strange odour entered the cockpit, the pilots thought it was a problem with the air-conditioning system. Twenty minutes later, Swissair Flight 111 plunged into the Atlantic Ocean five nautical miles southwest of Peggy’s Cove, Nova Scotia, with the loss of all 229 lives on board. In this paper, the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis of the in-flight fire that brought down SR 111 is described. Reconstruction of the wreckage disclosed that the fire pattern was extensive and complex in nature. The fire damage created significant challenges to identify the origin of the fire and to appropriately explain the heat damage observed. The SMARTFIRE CFD software was used to predict the “possible” behaviour of airflow as well as the spread of fire and smoke within SR 111. The main aims of the CFD analysis were to develop a better understanding of the possible effects, or lack thereof, of numerous variables relating to the in-flight fire. Possible fire and smoke spread scenarios were studied to see what the associated outcomes would be. This assisted investigators at Transportation Safety Board (TSB) of Canada, Fire & Explosion Group in assessing fire dynamics for cause and origin determination.

Heat Alert and Response Systems (HARS) are currently undergoing testing and implementation in Canada. These programs seek to reduce the adverse health effects of heat waves on human health by issuing weather forecasts and warnings, informing individuals about possible protections from excessive heat, and providing such protections to vulnerable subpopulations and individuals at risk. For these programs to be designed effectively, it is important to know how individuals perceive the heat, what their experience with heat-related illness is, how they protect themselves from excessive heat, and how they acquire information about such protections. In September 2010, we conducted a survey of households in 5 cities in Canada to study these issues. At the time of the survey, these cities had not implemented heat outreach and response systems. The study results indicate that individuals' recollections of recent heat wave events were generally accurate. About 21% of the sample reported feeling unwell during the most recent heat spell, but these illnesses were generally minor. Only in 25 cases out of 243, these illnesses were confirmed or diagnosed by a health care professional. The rate at which our respondents reported heat-related illnesses was higher among those with cardiovascular and respiratory illnesses, was higher among younger respondents and bore no relationship with the availability of air conditioning at home. Modern control methods like optimal control and model predictive control (MPC) provide a framework for simultaneous regulation of the tracking performance and limiting the control energy, thus have been widely deployed in industrial applications. Yet, due to its simplicity and robustness, the conventional P (Proportional) and PI (Proportional–Integral) control are still the most common methods used in many engineering systems, such as electric power systems, automotive, and Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) for buildings, where energy efficiency and energy saving are the critical issues to be addressed. Yet, little has been done so far to explore the effect of its parameter tuning on both the system performance and control energy consumption, and how these two objectives are correlated within the P and PI control framework. In this paper, the P and PI controllers are designed with a simultaneous consideration of these two aspects. Two case studies are investigated in detail, including the control of Voltage Source Converters (VSCs) for transmitting offshore wind power to onshore AC grid through High Voltage DC links, and the control of HVAC systems. Results reveal that there exists a better trade-off between the tracking performance and the control energy through a proper choice of the P and PI controller parameters.

This talk addresses the problem of controlling a heating ventilating and air conditioning system with the purpose of achieving a desired thermal comfort level and energy savings. The formulation uses the thermal comfort, assessed using the predicted mean vote (PMV) index, as a restriction and minimises the energy spent to comply with it. This results in the maintenance of thermal comfort and on the minimisation of energy, which in most operating conditions are conflicting goals requiring some sort of optimisation method to find appropriate solutions over time. In this work a discrete model based predictive control methodology is applied to the problem. It consists of three major components: the predictive models, implemented by radial basis function neural networks identifed by means of a multi-objective genetic algorithm [1]; the cost function that will be optimised to minimise energy consumption and provide adequate thermal comfort; and finally the optimisation method, in this case a discrete branch and bound approach. Each component will be described, with a special emphasis on a fast and accurate computation of the PMV indices [2]. Experimental results obtained within different rooms in a building of the University of Algarve will be presented, both in summer [3] and winter [4] conditions, demonstrating the feasibility and performance of the approach. Energy savings resulting from the application of the method are estimated to be greater than 50%.

Ce projet visait à comparer les effets agronomiques d’une serre de tomates biologiques semi-fermée utilisant un système de climatisation par géothermie comparativement à une serre ouverte. Deux serres de 228 et 230 m2 ont été équipées d’un système d’échangeur d’air avec géothermie qui refroidissait et déshumidifiait l’air (serre semi-fermée) et d’un système de ventilation naturelle (serre témoin). Ces dernières ont été comparées au cours des années 2012 et 2013 entre lesquels les traitements ont été permutés. Les variables mesurées étaient les paramètres de croissance des plants ainsi que le rendement, le calibre des fruits et les propriétés physico-chimiques des tomates. Les résultats ont démontré que le système de climatisation n’a pas eu d’effets significatifs sur la croissance des plants, la qualité des fruits ainsi que le rendement. Les deux serres avaient des cibles de concentration en CO2 comprises entre 450 µL L-1 et 1000 µL L-1 selon l’ensoleillement. Les quantités de CO2 injectées ont été de 11 kg/m2 et 15 kg/m2 respectivement en 2012 et 2013 dans la serre semi-fermée alors qu’elles ont été de 24 kg/m2 et 25 kg/m2 dans la serre témoin. Bien qu’ayant nécessité moins d’injection, la serre semi-fermée a permis de conserver des concentrations en CO2 de 638 µL L-1 en 2012 et de 593 µL L-1 en 2013. Ces concentrations sont plus élevées que celles obtenues dans la serre témoin qui étaient respectivement de 385 µL L-1 et 486 µL L-1 en 2012 et 2013. De ce fait, le coût monétaire associé à l’enrichissement carboné a été de 1,6 à 2,0 fois plus élevé dans la serre témoin que dans la serre semi-fermée.

Este trabalho surgiu do âmbito da Tese de Dissertação do Mestrado em Energias Sustentáveis do Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto, tendo o acompanhamento dos orientadores da empresa Laboratório Ecotermolab do Instituto de Soldadura e Qualidade e do Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto, de forma a garantir a linha traçada indo de acordo aos objectivos propostos. A presente tese abordou o estudo do impacto da influência do ar novo na climatização de edifícios, tendo como base de apoio à análise a simulação dinâmica do edifício em condições reais num programa adequado, acreditado pela norma ASHRAE 140-2004. Este trabalho pretendeu evidenciar qual o impacto da influência do ar novo na climatização de um edifício com a conjugação de vários factores, tais como, ocupação, actividades e padrões de utilização (horários), iluminação e equipamentos, estudando ainda a possibilidade do sistema funcionar em regime de “Free-Cooling”. O princípio partiu fundamentalmente por determinar até que ponto se pode climatizar recorrendo único e exclusivamente à introdução de ar novo em regime de “Free-Cooling”, através de um sistema tudo-ar de Volume de Ar Variável - VAV, sem o apoio de qualquer outro sistema de climatização auxiliar localizado no espaço, respeitando os caudais mínimos impostos pelo RSECE (Decreto-Lei 79/2006). Numa primeira fase foram identificados todos os dados relativos à determinação das cargas térmicas do edifício, tendo em conta todos os factores e contributos alusivos ao valor da carga térmica, tais como a transmissão de calor e seus constituintes, a iluminação, a ventilação, o uso de equipamentos e os níveis de ocupação. Consequentemente foram elaboradas diversas simulações dinâmicas com o recurso ao programa EnergyPlus integrado no DesignBuilder, conjugando variáveis desde as envolventes à própria arquitectura, perfis de utilização ocupacional, equipamentos e taxas de renovação de ar nos diferentes espaços do edifício em estudo. Obtiveram-se vários modelos de forma a promover um estudo comparativo e aprofundado que permitisse determinar o impacto do ar novo na climatização do edifício, perspectivando a capacidade funcional do sistema funcionar em regime de “Free-Cooling”. Deste modo, a análise e comparação dos dados obtidos permitiram chegar às seguintes conclusões: Tendo em consideração que para necessidades de arrefecimento bastante elevadas, o “Free-Cooling” diurno revelou-se pouco eficaz ou quase nulo, para o tipo de clima verificado em Portugal, pois o diferencial de temperatura existente entre o exterior e o interior não é suficiente de modo a tornar possível a remoção das cargas de forma a baixar a temperatura interior para o intervalo de conforto. Em relação ao “Free-Cooling” em horário nocturno ou pós-laboral, este revelou-se bem mais eficiente. Obtiveram-se prestações muito interessantes sobretudo durante as estações de aquecimento e meia-estação, tendo em consideração o facto de existir necessidades de arrefecimento mesmo durante a estação de aquecimento. Referente à ventilação nocturna, isto é, em períodos de madrugada e fecho do edifício, concluiu-se que tal contribui para um abaixamento do calor acumulado durante o dia nos materiais construtivos do edifício e que é libertado ou restituído posteriormente para os espaços em períodos mais tardios. De entre as seguintes variáveis, aumento de caudal de ar novo insuflado e o diferencial de temperatura existente entre o ar exterior e interior, ficou demonstrado que este último teria maior peso contributivo na remoção do calor. Por fim, é ponto assente que de um modo geral, um sistema de climatização será sempre indispensável devido a cargas internas elevadas, requisitos interiores de temperatura e humidade, sendo no entanto aconselhado o “Free- Cooling” como um opção viável a incorporar na solução de climatização, de forma a promover o arrefecimento natural, a redução do consumo energético e a introdução activa de ar novo.
