The water and sucrose effective diffusion coefficients behavior were studied in potato tubers immersed in aqueous sucrose solution, 50% (w/,A), at 27 degreesC. Water and sucrose concentration profiles were measured as function of the position for 3, 6 and 12 h of immersion. These were adjusted to a mathematical model for three components that take into account the bulk flow in a shrinking tissue and the concentration dependence of the diffusion coefficients. The binary effective coefficients were an order of magnitude lower than those for pure solutions of sucrose. These coefficients show an unusual concentration dependence. Analysis of these coefficients as functions of the concentration and position demonstrates that, cellular tissue promotes high resistance to diffusion in the tuber and also the elastic contraction of material influences the species diffusion. The effect of time of exposure, solution concentration and temperature on the osmotic concentration of banana (slices of 11 mm thickness) was studied in aqueous sucrose solutions. The selectivity of the cellular tissues was reduced by steam blanching the banana slices before osmotic treatment. Effective diffusion coefficients for the loss of water and the increase in sucrose content were determined according to Fick's Law applied to a two-dimensional body; calculated on the basis of the concentration of various components in the liquid phase impenetrating the fruit. These coefficients revealed values similar to binary diffusion coefficients for pure sucrose solutions.

The molar single ion activity coefficients associated with hydrogen, copper(II), cadmium(II) and lead(II) ions were determined at 25 degrees C and ionic strengths between 0.100 and 3.00 M (NaClO4), whereas for acetate the ionic strengths were fixed between 0.300 and 2.00 M, held with the same inert electrolyte. The investigation was carried out potentiometrically by using proton-sensitive glass, copper, cadmium and lead ion-selective electrodes and a second-class Hg\Hg-2(CH3COO)(2) electrode. It was found that the activity coefficients of these ions (y(i)) can be assessed through the following empirical equations:log y(H) = -0.542I(0.5) + 0.451I; log y(Cu) = -1.249I(0.5) + 0.912I; log y(Cd) = -0.829I(0.5) + 0.448I(1.5);log y(Pb) = -0.404I(0.5) + 0.117I(2); and log y(Ac) = 0.0370I .

From spinor and scalar (2 + 1)-dimensional QED effective actions at finite temperature and density in a constant magnetic field background, we calculate the corresponding virial coefficients for particles in the lowest Landau level. These coefficients depend on a parameter theta related to the time-component of the gauge field, which plays an essential role for large gauge invariance. The variation of the parameter theta might lead to an interpolation between fermionic and bosonic virial coefficients, although these coefficients are singular for theta = pi/2.

Background: Splanchnic artery occlusion shock is caused by increased capillary permeability and cellular injury precipitated by oxygen derived free radicals following ischemia and reperfusion of splanchnic organs. The purpose of this study was to assess the role of several well-known oxygen- derived free radical scavengers in ameliorating or preventing this syndrome. Study design: Anesthetized rats were subjected to periods of occlusion of the visceral arteries and reperfusion. Tocopherol, taurine, selenium or a 'cocktail' of these three agents was injected subcutaneously for 4 consecutive days prior to operation. Mean arterial blood pressure was measured throughout the experimental period. Fluorometry and technetium-99m pyrophosphate counting of the visceral organs were performed as well as a histologic grading system for intestinal viability. Results: Final mean arterial blood pressure associated with the 'cocktail' and selenium groups was 79.1 ± 27.4 mmHg and 83.6 ± 17.8 mmHg, respectively. These values were significantly higher than the control group, 40.8 ± 11.4 mmHg (P < 0.05). Similar patterns of the benefit of selenium in contrast with the other groups were obtained with fluorescein perfusion, radioisotopic activity and histologic analysis. Conclusion: Pretreatment with selenium of splanchnic ischemia and reperfusion in the rat improves mean arterial blood pressure and microcirculatory visceral perfusion. Further analysis of the precise protective mechanism of selenium for reperfusion injury will enable visceral organs to withstand the consequences of increased capillary leakage and oxidant injury.

In this work, a series solution is found for the integro-differential equation y″ (t) = -(ω2 c + ω2 f sin2 ωpt)y(t) + ωf (sin ωpt) z′ (0) + ω2 fωp sin ωpt ∫t 0 (cos ωps) y(s)ds, which describes the charged particle motion for certain configurations of oscillating magnetic fields. As an interesting feature, the terms of the solution are related to distinct sequences of prime numbers.

The digestible energy and apparent nutrient digestibility coefficients of common diet ingredients were determined for pacu Piaractus brachypomus (370.21 ± 17.56 g). Fish were fed with pelleted practical diets to apparent satiation and the feces were collected by siphoning. The digestibility value for each ingredient was determined by comparison of the digestibility of a test diet with a reference diet (24.5% crude protein and 1% chromic oxide). The digestible energy values of soybean meal (SBM), fish meal (FM), corn (CN), and wheat bran (WB) were 2382, 3826, 3353, and 1784 kcal/kg, respectively. The apparent dry matter digestibility coefficients were 83.72, 90.14, 89.13, and 82.05% for SBM, FM, CN, and WB, respectively. The apparent crude protein digestibility coefficients were 75.88, 90.49, 85.06, and 61.62% for SBM, FM, CN, and WB, respectively. The apparent lipid digestibility coefficients were 63.03, 77.00, 83.01, and 82.45% for SBM, FM, CN, and WB, respectively. The digestibility of protein, lipid, and energy from SBM were somewhat low compared to values for other warmwater omnivorous fishes, but similar to values reported for pacu-caranha P. mesopotamicus. Otherwise, the nutrient and energy availability of the ingredients to P. brachypomus was similar to that of other fish. This information will be useful in formulating nutritious, economical diets for pacus. © by the World Aquaculture Society 2004.

Nonlinear (NL) optical properties of antimony oxide based glasses (AG) were characterized for excitation wavelengths from 800 to 1600 m. The NL refractive indices, n2, and the two-photon absorption (TPA) coefficient, β, have been evaluated using the Z-scan technique. Values of n2≈ 10-15 - 10-14 cm2/W of electronic origin were measured and negligible TPA coefficients (β < 0.003 cm/GW) were determined. The response time of the nonlinearity is faster than 100 fs as determined using the Kerr shutter technique. The figure-of-merit usually considered for all-optical switching, T = 2βλ/n2 , indicates that AG are very good materials for ultrafast switches at telecom wavelengths. © 2007 IEEE.

In this work, is presented an alternative and non conventional technique for evaluate the water amount present in the hydrated ethanol used as automotive fuel. The standard technique used in this kind of measure is the use of densimeter. The proposal of this work is based on the measure of the linear attenuation coefficient of hydrated ethanol, using the gamma-ray attenuation technique. The water amount, in volume, can be determined knowing the linear attenuation coefficient of hydrated ethanol. Samples of hydrated ethanol, collected at fuel stations, located in Sorocaba, SP, Brazil, were analyzed and the results showed the feasibility of the technique. © 2011 American Institute of Physics.
