The energetics of the low-temperature adsorption and decomposition of nitrous oxide, N(2)O, on flat and stepped platinum surfaces were calculated using density-functional theory (DFT). The results show that the preferred adsorption site for N(2)O is an atop site, bound upright via the terminal nitrogen. The molecule is only weakly chemisorbed to the platinum surface. The decomposition barriers on flat (I 11) surfaces and stepped (211) surfaces are similar. While the barrier for N(2)O dissociation is relatively small, the surface rapidly becomes poisoned by adsorbed oxygen. These findings are supported by experimental results of pulsed N(2)O decomposition with 5% Pt/SiO(2) and bismuth-modified Pt/C catalysts. At low temperature, decomposition occurs but self-poisoning by O((ads)) prevents further decomposition. At higher temperatures some desorption Of O(2) is observed, allowing continued catalytic activity. The study with bismuth-modified Pt/C catalysts showed that, although the activation barriers calculated for both terraces and steps were similar, the actual rate was different for the two surfaces. Steps were found experimentally to be more active than terraces and this is attributed to differences in the preexponential term. (C) 2004 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Density functional theory with gradient corrections and spin polarization has been used to study the dehydrogenation of CH3 on Ni(111), a crucial step in many important catalytic reactions. The reaction, CH3(ads)--> CH2(ads)+H-(ads), is about 0.5 eV endothermic with an activation energy of more than 1 eV. The overall reaction pathway is rather intriguing. The C moiety translates from a hcp to a fcc site during the course of the reaction. The transition state of the reaction has been identified. The CH3 species is highly distorted, and both C and the active H are centered nearly on top of a row of Ni atoms with a long C-H bond length of 1.80 Angstrom. The local density of states coupled with examination of the real space distribution of individual quantum states has been used to analyze the reaction pathway. (C) 2000 American Institute of Physics. Relative strengths of surface interaction for individual carbon atoms in acyclic and cyclic hydrocarbons adsorbed on alumina surfaces are determined using chemically resolved 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) T1 relaxation times. The ratio of relaxation times for the adsorbed atoms T1,ads to the bulk liquid relaxation time T1,bulk provides an indication of the mobility of the atom. Hence a low T1,ads/T1,bulk ratio indicates a stronger surface interaction. The carbon atoms associated with unsaturated bonds in the molecules are seen to exhibit a larger reduction in T1 on adsorption relative to the aliphatic carbons, consistent with adsorption occurring through the carbon-carbon multiple bonds. The relaxation data are interpreted in terms of proximity of individual carbon atoms to the alumina surface and adsorption conformations are inferred. Furthermore, variations of interaction strength and molecular configuration have been explored as a function of adsorbate coverage, temperature, surface pre-treatment, and in the presence of co-adsorbates. This relaxation time analysis is appropriate for studying the behaviour of hydrocarbons adsorbed on a wide range of catalyst support and supported-metal catalyst surfaces, and offers the potential to explore such systems under realistic operating conditions when multiple chemical components are present at the surface.

Objectives: Given the clinical and pathological similarities between age-relatedmacular degeneration (AMD) and Alzheimer disease (AD), to assess whether AMDassociatedsingle nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), including those from complementrelatedgenes, are associated with AD. 
Design: A case-control association study-typedesign. 
Setting: A UK tertiary care dementia clinic. 
Participants: 322 cognitivelynormal participants and 258 cases with a clinical diagnosis of AD.
Measurements:Polymorphisms in the following genes were studied: CFH, ARMS2, C2/CFB, C3, CFI/PLA2G12a, SERPING1, TLR3, TLR4, CRP, APOE, and TOMM40. Haplotypes were analysedfor CFH, TOMM40, and APOE. Univariate analysis was performed for each geneticchange and case-comparator status, and then correction for multiple testing performed. 
Results: The presence of an ε4 APOE allele was significantly associated with AD. Noassociation was evident between CFH SNPs or haplotypes, or other AMD-associated SNPstested, and AD. The exceptions were TOMM40 SNPs, which were associated with AD evenafter correction for multiple comparisons. The associations disappeared, however, whenentered into a regression model including APOE genotypes. 
Conclusions: The resultsfor most SNPs tested, as well as CFH haplotypes, are novel. The functional effects ofabnormal complement activity in AD’s pathogenesis may be contradictory, butmethodological reasons may underlie the lack of association—for example, geneticchanges other than SNPs being involved.

The X-parameter based nonlinear modelling tools have been adopted as the foundation for the advanced methodology
of experimental characterisation and design of passive nonlinear devices. Based upon the formalism of the Xparameters,
it provides a unified framework for co-design of antenna beamforming networks, filters, phase shifters and
other passive and active devices of RF front-end, taking into account the effect of their nonlinearities. The equivalent
circuits of the canonical elements are readily incorporated in the models, thus enabling evaluation of PIM effect on the
performance of individual devices and their assemblies. An important advantage of the presented methodology is its
compatibility with the industry-standard established commercial RF circuit simulator Agilent ADS.
The major challenge in practical implementation of the proposed approach is concerned with experimental retrieval of the X-parameters for canonical passive circuit elements. To our best knowledge commercial PIM testers and practical laboratory test instruments are inherently narrowband and do not allow for simultaneous vector measurements at the PIM and harmonic frequencies. Alternatively, existing nonlinear vector analysers (NVNA) support X-parameter measurements in a broad frequency bands with a range of stimuli, but their dynamic range is insufficient for the PIM characterisation in practical circuits. Further opportunities for adaptation of the X-parameters methodology to the PIM
characterisation of passive devices using the existing test instruments are explored.

This paper presents initial results of evaluating suitability of the conventional two-tone CW passive intermodulation (PIM) test for characterization of modulated signal distortion by passive nonlinearities in base station antennas and RF front-end. A comprehensive analysis of analog and digitally modulated waveforms in the transmission lines with weak distributed nonlinearity has been performed using the harmonic balance analysis and X-parameters in Advanced Design System (ADS) simulator. The nonlinear distortion metrics used in the conventional two-tone CW PIM test have been compared with the respective spectral metrics applied to the modulated waveforms, such as adjacent channel power ratio (ACPR) and error vector magnitude (EVM). It is shown that the results of two-tone CW PIM tests are consistent with the metrics used for assessment of signal integrity of both analog and digitally modulated waveforms.

The reduction of CO2 on copper electrodes has attracted great attentions in the last decades, since it provides a sustainable approach for energy restore. During the CO2 reduction process, the electron transfer to COads is experimentally suggested to be the crucial step. In this work, we examine two possible pathways in CO activation, i.e. to generate COHads and CHOads, respectively, by performing the state-of-the-art constrained ab initio molecular dynamics simulations on the charged Cu(100) electrode under aqueous conditions, which is close to the realistic electrochemical condition. The free energy profile in the formation of COHads via the coupled proton and electron transfer is plotted. Furthermore, by Bader charge analyses, a linear relationship between C-O bond distance and the negative charge in CO fragment is unveiled. The formation of CHOads is identified to be a surface catalytic reaction, which requires the adsorption of H atom on the surface first. By comparing these two pathways, we demonstrate that kinetically the formation of COHads is more favored than that of CHOads, while CHOads is thermodynamically more stable. This work reveals that CO activation via COHads intermediate is an important pathway in electrocatalysis, which could provide some insights into CO2 electroreduction over Cu electrodes.

Passive intermodulation (PIM) often limits the performance of communication systems with analog and digitally-modulated signals and especially of systems supporting multiple carriers. Since the origins of the apparently multiple physical sources of nonlinearity causing PIM are not fully understood, the behavioral models are frequently used to describe the process of PIM generation. In this paper a polynomial model of memoryless nonlinearity is deduced from PIM measurements of a microstrip line with distributed nonlinearity with two-tone CW signals. The analytical model of nonlinearity is incorporated in Keysight Technology’s ADS simulator to evaluate the metrics of signal fidelity in the receive band for analog and digitally-modulated signals. PIM-induced distortion and cross-band interference with modulated signals are compared to those with two-tone CW signals. It is shown that conventional metrics can be applied to quantify the effect of distributed nonlinearities on signal fidelity. It is found that the two-tone CW test provides a worst-case estimate of cross-band interference for two-carrier modulated signals whereas with a three-carrier signal PIM interference in the receive band is noticeably overestimated. The simulated constellation diagrams for QPSK signals demonstrate that PIM interference exhibits the distinctive signatures of correlated distortion and this indicates that there are opportunities for mitigating PIM interference and that PIM interference cannot be treated as noise. One of the interesting results is that PIM distortion on a transmission line results in asymmetrical regrowth of output PIM interference for modulated signals.

Since the origins of the apparently multiple physical sources of nonlinearity causing PIM in distributed circuits are not fully understood, the behavioural models are frequently employed to describe the process of PIM generation. In this paper, a memoryless nonlinear polynomial model, capable of predicting high-order multi-carrier intermodulation products, is deduced from the third-order two-tone PIM measurements on a microstrip transmission line with distributed nonlinearity. The analytical model of passive distributed nonlinearity is implemented in Keysight Technology’s ADS simulator to evaluate the adjacent band power ratio for three-tone signals. The obtained results suggest that the costly multi-carrier test setups can possibly be replaced by a simulation tool based on the properly retrieved nonlinear polynomial model.

In this work physical and behavioral models for a bulk Reflective Semiconductor Optical Amplifier (RSOA) modulator in Radio over Fiber (RoF) links are proposed. The transmission performance of the RSOA modulator is predicted under broadband signal drive. At first, the simplified physical model for the RSOA modulator in RoF links is proposed, which is based on the rate equation and traveling-wave equations with several assumptions. The model is implemented with the Symbolically Defined Devices (SDD) in Advanced Design System (ADS) and validated with experimental results. Detailed analysis regarding optical gain, harmonic and intermodulation distortions, and transmission performance is performed. The distribution of the carrier and Amplified Spontaneous Emission (ASE) is also demonstrated. Behavioral modeling of the RSOA modulator is to enable us to investigate the nonlinear distortion of the RSOA modulator from another perspective in system level. The Amplitude-to-Amplitude Conversion (AM-AM) and Amplitude-to-Phase Conversion (AM-PM) distortions of the RSOA modulator are demonstrated based on an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and a generalized polynomial model. Another behavioral model based on Xparameters was obtained from the physical model. Compensation of the nonlinearity of the RSOA modulator is carried out based on a memory polynomial model. The nonlinear distortion of the RSOA modulator is reduced successfully. The improvement of the 3rd order intermodulation distortion is up to 17 dB. The Error Vector Magnitude (EVM) is improved from 6.1% to 2.0%. In the last part of this work, the performance of Fibre Optic Networks for Distributed and Extendible Heterogeneous Radio Architectures and Service Provisioning (FUTON) systems, which is the four-channel virtual Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO), is predicted by using the developed physical model. Based on Subcarrier Multiplexing (SCM) techniques, four-channel signals with 100 MHz bandwidth per channel are generated and used to drive the RSOA modulator. The transmission performance of the RSOA modulator under the broadband multi channels is depicted with the figure of merit, EVM under di erent adrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) level of 64 and 254 for various number of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) subcarriers of 64, 512, 1024 and 2048.

Perturbations of asymptotically Anti-de-Sitter (AdS) spacetimes are often considered by imposing field vanishing boundary conditions (BCs) at the AdS boundary. Such BCs, of Dirichlet-type, imply a vanishing energy flux at the boundary, but the converse is, generically, not true. Regarding AdS as a gravitational box, we consider vanishing energy flux (VEF) BCs as a more fundamental physical requirement and we show that these BCs can lead to a new branch of modes. As a concrete example, we consider Maxwell perturbations on Kerr-AdS black holes in the Teukolsky formalism, but our formulation applies also for other spin fields. Imposing VEF BCs, we find a set of two Robin BCs, even for Schwarzschild-AdS black holes. The Robin BCs on the Teukolsky variables can be used to study quasinormal modes, superradiant instabilities and vector clouds. As a first application, we consider here the quasinormal modes of Schwarzschild-AdS black holes. We find that one of the Robin BCs yields the quasinormal spectrum reported in the literature, while the other one unveils a new branch for the quasinormal spectrum.

Objective: To explore the non-pharmacological correlates of the perceived effectiveness of antidepressants (ADs), thereby enhancing understanding of the mechanisms involved in recovery from depression while taking ADs. Method: An online survey was completed by 1781 New Zealand adults who had taken ADs in the previous 5 years. Results: All 18 psychosocial variables measured were associated with depression reduction, and 16 with improved quality of life (QoL). Logistic regression models revealed that the quality of the relationship with the prescriber was related to both depression reduction and improved QoL. In addition, depression reduction was related to younger age, higher income, being fully informed about ADs by the prescriber, fewer social causal beliefs for depression and not having lost a loved one in the 2 months prior to prescription. Furthermore, both outcome measures were positively related to belief in ‘chemical’ rather than ‘placebo’ effects. Conclusion: There are multiple non-pharmacological processes involved in recovery while taking ADs. Enhancing them, for example focusing on the prescriber–patient relationship and giving more information, may enhance recovery rates, with or without ADs.

O presente relatório é o resultado da reflexão crítica sobre o estágio realizado pela candidata na Empresa Atelier do Sul (ADS) no âmbito do Mestrado em Produção, Edição e Comunicação de Conteúdos (MPECC), ramo Multimédia. Neste trabalho são abordados os motivos da opção de estágio, as suas finalidades e metas a atingir, dando-se igualmente a conhecer a entidade de acolhimento, as suas metodologias de trabalho e as condições de estágio proporcionado pelo ADS. Neste contexto, identificam-se as actividades levadas a cabo pela estagiária ao longo do pe-ríodo do estágio, avaliando-se a forma como as mesmas foram desenvolvidas e quais os eventuais impactos que produziram na Empresa. O estágio curricular teve início no dia 1 de Novembro de 2012 e terminou a 30 de A-bril de 2012.

The Grid Execution Management for Legacy Code Architecture (GEMLCA) enables exposing legacy applications as Grid services without re-engineering the code, or even requiring access to the source files. The integration of current GT3 and GT4 based GEMLCA implementations with the P-GRADE Grid portal allows the creation, execution and visualisation of complex Grid workflows composed of legacy and nonlegacy components. However, the deployment of legacy codes and mapping their execution to Grid resources is currently done manually. This paper outlines how GEMLCA can be extended with automatic service deployment, brokering, and information system support. A conceptual architecture for an Automatic Deployment Service (ADS) and for an x-Service Interoperability Layer (XSILA) are introduced explaining how these mechanisms support desired features in future releases of GEMLCA.
