This paper presents the results of the adsorption of heavy rare earth ions (Gd(III), Tb(III), Dy(III), Ho(III), Er(III), Tm(III), Yb(III), Lu(III) and Y(III)) from hydrochloric acid solutions at 30 degreesC by the extraction resin containing 1-hexyl-4-ethyloctyl isopropylphosphonic acid (HEOPPA), which has higher steric hindrance, higher selectivities and lower extraction and stripping acidity than di(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid (DERPA) or 2-ethylhexyl phosphonic acid mono-2-ethylhexyl ester (HEH/EHP). The dependence of acid concentration, flow rate and amounts of rare earth ions sorbed on the separation of Er-Tm, Tm-Yb and Er-Tm-Yb mixtures has been studied. The baseline chromatographic separation of Er-Tm-Yb mixture has been observed. Satisfactory results with purity and yield of Tm2O3>99.71% and >71.25%, Er2O3>99-81% and >94.17%, and Yb2O3>99.74% and >89.83%, respectively, have been obtained. The parameters such,as resolution, separation factors and efficiencies have been determined as a function of acidity, loading of rare earth elements and flow rates. The stoichiometry of the extraction of rare earth ions has been suggested as well.

Extraction and interfacial kinetics of Nd3+ and Sm3+ with HER/EHP-kerosene in a hollow fiber membrane extractor were studied. The results show that the extraction reactions in the hollow fiber membrane extractor are the same as those in the liquid-liquid extraction, which can be expressed as a quasi-first-order reaction. The effect of acidity in aqueous phase, concentrations of extractant, Nd3+ and Sm3+ on extraction rate were discussed and the corresponding reaction series were obtained. The reaction equations, reaction rate constants and the separation constant were obtained.

Phase behavior of the extraction system, Cyanex 923-heptane/Ce4+-H2SO4 has been studied and compared with Cyanex 923-heptane/H2SO4 System. Cerium(IV) is mainly extracted into the third phase, and its concentration in the third phase first increases with the increasing aqueous acid concentration, reaches maximum and then decreases. At higher acidity, cerium(IV) is hardly extracted in the third phase. The phase behavior and change of the contents of acid and water are similar to those in the acid system. The acid concentration increases with increase of the aqueous acid in the whole extraction region while the water content first decreases with it and then increases after the third phase formation. The third phase has a characteristic lamellar structure formed by the aggregates of Cyanex 923 (.) (H2SO4)(2) (.) H2O as those in the case of acid system. The third phase loaded Ce(IV) has been used to prepare ultrafine CeO2 powder conveniently by precipitation with oxalic acid, and powders with size mostly smaller than 100 nm can be obtained.

A series of strong solid acids composed of WO3/ZrO2 were prepared. Their crystal structure, surface state, and acidity were determined by the methods of X-ray diffraction, thermal gravimetric and differential thermal analysis, temperature-programmed reduction, laser Raman, and acidity measurement. The results revealed that ZrO2 in WO3/ZrO2 existed mainly in the tetragonal phase, the addition of WO3 plays an important role in stabilizing the tetragonal phase of ZrO2, and all of the samples possessed large surface areas. WO3 in WO3/ZrO2 is mainly monolayer dispersed, and a small amount crystallized on the ZrO2 surface and partly reacted with ZrO2 to form the bond of Zr-O-W, acting as the strong solid acid center. The catalytic properties of WO3/ZrO2 strong solid;acids for alkylation of isobutane with butene at different conditions were investigated. They had a better reaction performance than other strong solid acids; a parallel relationship could be drawn between the catalytic activity and the acid amounts as well as the acidic strength of the catalysts.

A series of WO3/ZrO2 strong solid acid prepared under different conditions were studied. Their crystal structures, surface properties and acidities were determined by means of XRD, DTA-TG, H-2- TPR, Laser Raman and acidity measurements. The results revealed that ZrO2 in WO3/ZrO2 existed mainly in tetragonal phase, the addition of WO3 plays an important role to stabilize tetragonal phase of ZrO2 and thus the catalyst had a considerable surface area. WO3 in WO3/ZrO2 was dispersed and crystalized in WO3 crystalite on ZrO2 surface and partly reacted with ZrO2 to form the bond of Zr-O-W, which acts as the strong solid acid site. The catalytic properties of WO3/ZrO2 strong solid acid for alkylation of iso-butane with butene under the different conditions were investigated. They had a better reaction performance than other strong solid acids, a parallel relationship could be drawn between the catalytic activity and the amount of acid sites as well as the acidic strength of the catalysts.

The anodic voltammetric behavior of inosine (I) was investigated by linar-sweep voltammetry, differential-pulse voltammetry and cyclic voltammetry at a glassy carbon electrode. In a medium of 0.1 mol/L N2HPO4, inosine showed a well defined anodic peak. The peak potential was about 1.42 V (vs. Ag/AgCl). A linear relationship held between the peak current and the concentration of inosine in the rang of 5 x 10(-4) similar to 8 x 10(-2) g/L. The peak potential decreased with the decrease of the acidity of the solution. The four anodic peaks of inosine with hypoxanthine, xanthine and uric acid were obtained. Their peak potentials were about at 1.42, 1.07, 0.72 and 0.26 Vt vs. Ag/AgCl). The method has been used for the direct determination of inosine in injections. Recoveries of inosine in urine samples were about 85%. Experimental result proved that the electrode reaction was diffusion-controlled and irreversible.

The anodic voltammetric behavior of anaesthetic tetracine and its application were studied. In 0.1 mol/L HClO4 solution, the potential of anodic peak for tetracine is 1.04 V(vs. Ag/AgCl) at a glassy carbon electrode. A linear relationship between the peak height and the concentration of tetracine in the range of 5 x 10(-4) similar to 1 x 10(-1) g/L was obtained. The peak current decreases with the decreasing acidity of the solution. the mehtod has been used for the direct determination of tetracine in injections. The average recoveries of tetracine in urine samples were 98.5%. The mechanism of the electrode reaction was also discussed.

Non-stoichiometric mixed-valent molybdenum(VI, V) oxide film was grown on carbon substrates by the electrodeposition method. Responses of the prepared molybdenum oxide thin films to potential and to different solution acidities were studied by cyclic voltammetry, and the corresponding morphological changes of the film were monitored by atomic force microscopy (AFM). AFM images of the molybdenum oxide film show that the characteristic domed structure on the film surface increased during the transition from the oxidized state to the reduced state without signification change in the KMS surface roughness value. Furthermore, AFM studies show that the solution acidity has great effect on the morphology of the films, and the films undergo a homogenizing process with increasing pH of the solutions. In this paper, a series of Sr1-xLaxNiAl11O19 catalysts were synthesized and their chemical and physical properties were investigated by XRD, UV-DRS, H-2-O-2 titration, TPR and Py-IR techniques. The experimental results show that the Sr1-xLaxNiAl11O19 catalysts have a magnetoplumbite structure and Ni ion is shared between tetrahedral and octahedral sites of the spinel blocks, and the amount of nickel ions in the tetrahedral environment increases with the increase of x value in Sr1-xLaxNiAl11O19. The TPR study revealed that the reducibility of the series of the catalysts depends strongly on the substitution value x, that is, a low temperature peak appears for samples without substitution, in case of samples with x = 1 high temperature peak appears, and for samples with 0

Solvent extraction of Ce(IV), Th(IV) with Cyanex 923 in n-hexane from sulphuric acid medium was studied with the dependence of the extraction on acidity and temperature being investigated. The Ce(IV) and Th(IV) extraction mechanism was proposed by slope analysis and the IR spectra of purified Cyanex 923 saturated with Ce(IV) were employed to determine the composition of the Ce(IV) complex. The equilibrium constant and thermodynamic functions of Th(IV) extraction were calculated and the characteristics of the stripping of Ce(IV), Th(IV) from the loaded organic phase were studied. Catalysts consisting of heteropoly acids (HPAs) supported on different silica and mesoporous molecular sieves have been prepared by impregnation and the sol-gel method, respectively, and their catalytic behavior in fixed-bed alkylation of isobutane with butene has been investigated. The activity, selectivity and stability of the supported-HPA catalysts could be correlated with the surface acidity of the catalysts, the structure of supports as well as the time on stream (TOS). In the fixed-bed reactor, the acidity of the heteropoly acid is favorable to the formation of dimerization products (C-8(=)); especially, the pore size of supports was seen to have an important effect on activity and product distribution of the catalysts. Contrary to the traditional solid-acid catalysts, the supported-HPA catalysts own an excellent stability for alkylation, which makes it possible for these supported catalysts to replace the liquid-acid catalysts used in industry.

Extraction resins, of the type of;levextrel, (which is a collective term for styrene/divinylbenzene based copolymers of predominantly macroporous structure that contain a selective extractant) are important for the recovery and separation of metal ions, as they combine features of solvent extraction and ion exchange resins. This paper presents the results of the adsorption of heavy rare earth ions (Ho(III), Er(III), Tm(III), Yb(III), Lu(III) and Y(III)) from hydrochloric acid solutions at 0.2 mol/L ionic strength and 50 degrees C by the extraction resin containing di (2,4,4-trimethyl pentyl) phosphinic acid (Cyanex 272) and the chromatographic separation of (Er(III), Tm(III) and Yb(III)). Technological separation products, with purity and yield of Tm2O3 >99.97%, >80%, Er2O3 >99.9%, >94% and Yb2O3 >99.8%, >80% respectively, have been obtained from a feed having the composition Tm2O3 60%, Er2O3 10%, and Yb2O3 3%, the others 27%. The distribution coefficients, extraction equilibrium constants and separation factors have been determined as a function of acidity, loading of the resin and rare earths, flow rates and column ratios. The resolutions and efficiencies of separation of Er/Tm/Yb each other have been calculated. The stoichiometry of the extraction of rare earth ions has been suggested as well.

The synergistic extraction of Sc(III) from H2SO4 solution with bis(2, 4, 4-trimethylpentyl)monothiophosphinic acid(HBTMPTP, HL) and branched chain alkyl phosphine oxide mixture (Cyanex 925, B) in n-hexane has been investigated, The results indicated that synergistic effect was showed in low acidity (c(H2SO4) < 0.25 mol/L). The composition of the extracted complex of Sc(III) has been determined to be Sc(HL2)(2)B-3(SO4)(1/2) by the method of slope analysis, The mechanism of the synergistic extraction of Sc(III) may be : Sc3+ + 2(HL)(2(O)) + 3B((O)) + 1/2SO(4)(2-)reversible arrow(K12)Sc(HL2)(2)B-3(SO4)(1/2(O)) + 2H(+) ScL(HL2)(2(O)) + 3B((O)) + H+ + 1/2SO(4)(2-)reversible arrow(beta')Sc(HL2)(2)B-3(SO4)(1/2(O)) + 1/2(HL)(2(O)) Sc(SO4)(1.5)B-2(O) + B-(O) + 2(HL)(2(O))reversible arrow(beta')Sc(HL2)(2)B-3(SO4)(1/2(O)) + 2H(+) + SO42- Their equilibrium constants have been calculated to be lgK(13)=6.77+/-0.12, lg beta'=7.71, lg beta '' = 0.10, respectively, The IR spectra and FAB-MS of the saturated synergistic extraction complex of Sc(III) have been discussed as well.
