Downcore records of magnesium/calcium, strontium/calcium, manganese/calcium, and oxygen and carbon isotopes of planktonic and benthic foraminifers from Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 1237 on the Peru-Chile margin provide critical information regarding the history of climate in the region over the past 6 m.y. Specifically, these records can be used to infer the sea-surface temperature (SST) and sea-surface salinity (SSS) history of a region that today is associated with substantial wind stress curl-driven upwelling (Shipboard Scientific Party, 2003, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.ir.202.108.2003). This report provides data tables and other supporting information for measurements made on planktonic and benthic foraminifers from Site 1237. Items included in this report are (1) oxygen and carbon isotopic measurements of planktonic and benthic foraminifers and (2) Mg/Ca, Sr/Ca, and Mn/Ca ratio measurements of planktonic foraminifers from Holes 1237B, 1237C, and 1237D.

Changes in circulation associated with the shoaling of the Isthmus of Panama and the Caribbean carbonate crash in the Miocene were investigated using Nd isotopes from fossil fish teeth and debris from two sites in the Caribbean Basin (Ocean Drilling Program Sites 998 and 999) and two sites in the eastern equatorial Pacific (Sites 846 and 1241). The total range for e-Nd values measured from 18 to 4.5 Ma in the Caribbean is -7.3 to 0. These values are higher than Atlantic water masses (~-11) and range up to values equivalent to contemporaneous Pacific water masses, confirming that flow into the Caribbean Basin was composed of a mixture of Pacific and Atlantic waters, with an upper limit of almost pure Pacific-sourced waters. Throughout the Caribbean record, particularly during the carbonate crash (10-12 Ma), low carbonate mass accumulation rates (MARs) correlate with more radiogenic e-Nd values, indicating increased flow of corrosive Pacific intermediate water into the Caribbean Basin during intervals of dissolution. This flow pattern agrees with results from general ocean circulation models designed to study the effect of the shoaling of the Central American Seaway. Low carbonate MARs and high e-Nd values also correlate with intervals of increased Northern Component Water production and, therefore, enhanced conveyor circulation, suggesting that the conveyor may respond to changes in circulation associated with shoaling of the Central American Seaway. Reduced Pacific throughflow related to shoaling of the seaway led to a gradual increase in carbonate preservation and more Atlantic-like e-Nd values following the carbonate crash.

This study presents a record of dissolution from the eastern equatorial Pacific (EEP) that extends to 2.1 Ma, based on sediments from Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 1241. A new benthic oxygen isotope record was developed in order to provide the stratigraphic framework for the Pleistocene section of the core. The isotope record extends back to 2.1 Ma, covering MIS 1-80, and has a sampling resolution of 2 kyr from 0 to 360 kyr and 5 kyr from 360 to 2100 kyr. Dissolution at ODP Site 1241 is characterized through the use of percent coarse fraction (%CF) and shell fragmentation records. These records indicate that %CF in the EEP is recording a dissolution signal dominated by the 41-kyr and 100-kyr climate cycles, and that preservation maxima lag glacial maxima by 9-14 kyr at the major orbital periods. The dissolution signals observed in the ODP Site 1241 record can be correlated across the Pacific and likely record the response to basinwide changes in carbonate chemistry. The dissolution fluctuations and d13C signal observed at ODP Site 1241 are consistent with both the [Shackleton, 1977] and [Toggweiler et al., 2006, doi:10.1029/2005PA001154] hypotheses that explain changes in the global carbon cycle during glacial-interglacial transitions.
