Electrochemical measurement, quantum chemical method, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were performed to investigate the inhibitive effect of 2,3,5-triphenyl-2H-tetrazolium chloride (TTC) and 2,4,6-tri(2-pyridyl)-s-triazine(TPT) on the corrosion of mild steel in 1mol.L-1 HCl at room temperature. Impedance spectroscopy measurement showed that the polarization resistance increased and that double layer capacitance decreased with the increase in the inhibitive concentration, and the results of potentiodynamic polarization showed that the inhibitors suppressed both cathodic and anodic processes of steel corrosion without change in the mechanism. Higher the orbital density distribution strength of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital, higher is the molecule dipole, and lower energy gap between the energy of the highest occupied molecular orbital and the energy of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital resulted in higher inhibitory efficiency. The results of SEM analysis showed that the metal was protected from aggressive corrosion by the addition of TTC and TPT.

N'-(4-fluorobenzylidene)-2-(1H-1 2,4-triazole-1-yl) acetohydrazide was synthesized by the reaction of 4-fluorobenzaldehyde with 2-(1H-1 2,4-triazole-1-yl) acetohydrazide. The structure was confirmed via elemental analysis, MS, H-1 NMR, IR, and X-ray diffraction. It crystallized in a monoclinic system with space group P2 (1) a = 0.4905 (1) nm, b = 0.8160 (2) nm, c = 1.4105 (3) nm, beta = 93.33 (3)degrees, Z = 2, V = 0.5636 (2) nm(3), D-c = 1.457 Mg/m(3), mu = 0.112 mm(-1), F(000) = 256, and final R-1 = 0.0685. Several intermolecular hydrogen-bond interactions existed in the crystal structure, facilitating the stabilization of the compound.

The behaviour towards electron transfer of self-assembled monolayers of 2-mercaptobenzimidazole (MBI) and 2-mercaptobenzimidazole-5-sulfonate (MBIS) on Au(1 1 1) was examined by cyclic voltammetry. The influence of the monolayers was drastically dependent on the charge of the redox probe used. When [Ru(NH3)6]3+ is used, a post-adsorption peak characteristic of the adsorption of the redox probe is detected only at the MBIS modified electrode. Taking advantage of this difference, ac voltammetry has been used to determine the surface composition when mixed monolayers are formed by immersion of the gold substrate in mixtures of different molar fractions of MBI and MBIS. Results clearly indicate that the ionic strength of the immersion solution plays a key role in the surface composition when a charged surfactant is mixed with non-charged surfactant. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. The X-ray crystal structures of two crystalline forms of 5-(2,3,5-trichlorophenyl)-2,4-diaminopyrimidine, C10H7Cl3N4 (code name BW1003C87) (I) and (II), have been carried out at liquid nitrogen temperature. A detailed comparison of the two structures is given. Both are centrosymmetric, with structure (I) in the triclinic space group P (1) over bar unit cell a = 6.4870(10), b = 9.216(2), c = 12.016(2) angstrom, alpha = 75.78(3)degrees, beta = 89.95(3)degrees, gamma = 83.45(3)degrees, V = 691.5(2) angstrom(3), Z = 2 and density (calculated) = 1.544 Mg/m(3); and (II) in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/c, unit cell a = 12.000(2), b = 7.518(2), c = 13.450(3) angstrom, beta = 97.87(3)degrees, V = 1202.0(5) angstrom(3), Z = 4, Density (calculated) = 1.600 Mg/m(3). Structure (I) includes a solvated CH3OH in the lattice. Final R indices [I > 2sigma(I)] are R1 = 0.0427, wR2 = 0.1075 for (I) and R1 = 0.0487, wR2 = 0.1222 for (II). R indices (all data) are R1 = 0.0470, wR2 = 0.1118 for (I) and R1 = 0.0623, wR2 = 0.1299 for (II). 5-Phenyl-2,4 diaminopyrimidine and 6-phenyl-1,2,4 triazine derivatives, which include lamotrigine (3,5-diamino-6-(2,3-dichlorophenyl)-1,2,4-triazine), have been investigated for some time for their effects on the central nervous system. Both lamotrigine and 5-(2,3,5-trichlorophenyl)-2,4-diaminopyrimidine (code name BW1003C87), the subject of the present study, are anticonvulsant as well as neuroprotective in models of brain ischaemia and in a model of white matter ischaemia. BW1003C87 is a sodium channel blocker which also reduces the release of the neurotransmitter glutamate. The three dimensional structures reported here form part of a newly developed data base for the detailed investigation of members of this drug family and their biological activities.

The measured angular differential cross section (DCS) for the elastic scattering of electrons from Ar+(3s2 3p5 2P) at the collision energy of 16 eV is presented. By solving the Hartree-Fock equations, we calculate the corresponding theoretical DCS including the coupling between the orbital angular momenta and spin of the incident electron and those of the target ion and also relaxation effects. Since the collision energy is above one inelastic threshold for the transition 3s2 3p5 2P–3s 3p6 2S, we consider the effects on the DCS of inelastic absorption processes and elastic resonances. The measurements deviate significantly from the Rutherford cross section over the full angular range observed, especially in the region of a deep minimum centered at approximately 75°. Our theory and an uncoupled, unrelaxed method using a local, spherically symmetric potential by Manson [Phys. Rev. 182, 97 (1969)] both reproduce the overall shape of the measured DCS, although the coupled Hartree-Fock approach describes the depth of the minimum more accurately. The minimum is shallower in the present theory owing to our lower average value for the d-wave non-Coulomb phase shift s2, which is due to the high sensitivity of s2 to the different scattering potentials used in the two models. The present measurements and calculations therefore show the importance of including coupling and relaxation effects when accurately modeling electron-ion collisions. The phase shifts obtained by fitting to the measurements are compared with the values of Manson and the present method.

The enantiomerically pure ligand L-3RR (2R, 3R)-bis(2,2'-dipyridyl-5-methoxyl) butane has been synthesised by linking two 2,2'-bipyridine units with (2R, 3R)-butandiol. The reaction of L-3RR with Zn(II) afforded a mononuclear species and the H-1 NMR spectroscopy points to a C-1 symmetry, expected for a distorted trigonal bipyramidal coordination environment. These observations were confirmed by MM2 calculations and electrospray mass spectrometry. The reaction of L-3RR with iron(II) indicated the formation of a dinuclear species by mass spectrometry. Solution state CD spectroscopy indicates that both complexes adopt a Lambda-configuration, implying a single stranded dinuclear iron(II) complex is present rather than the anticipated triple helical architecture.

The present study examined the effects of administering selective 5-HT antagonists and agonists to rats tested in the elevated zero-maze (EZM) model of anxiety. The EZM paradigm has advantages over the elevated plus-maze (EPM) paradigm with respect to measuring anxiety, yet has been utilized less frequently. Three experiments were conducted each with a diazepam control (0.25, 0.5 and 0.75 mg/kg). In the first experiment, we administered the 5-HT2C antagonist RS 102221 (0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 mg/kg) and 5-HT2C agonist MK-212 (0.25, 0.5 and 0.75 mg/kg); in the second experiment, we administered the 5-HT3 antagonist Y-25130 (0.1, 1.0 and 3.0 mg/kg) and 5-HT3 agonist SR 57227A (0.1, 1.0 and 3.0 mg/kg), and in the third experiment, we administered the 5-HT4 antagonist RS 39604 (0.01, 0.1, 1.0 mg/kg) and 5-HT4 agonist RS 67333 (0.01, 0.1 and 0.5 mg/kg). The administration of 5-HT2/3/4 subtype antagonists all generated behavioral profiles indicative of anxiolytic-like effects in the EZM, which was apparent from examination of both traditional and ethological measures. While little effect was observed from 5-HT2 and 5-HT3 agonists, the 5-HT4 agonist RS 67333 was found to produce a paradoxical anxiolytic-like effect similar to that produced by the 5-HT4 antagonist RS 39604. We conclude by discussing the implications of these findings.

The effects of sample solvent composition and the injection volume, on the chromatographic peak profiles of two carbamate derivatives, methyl 2-benzimidazolecarbamate (MBC) and 3-butyl-2,4-dioxo[1,2-a]-s-triazinobenzimidazole (STB), were studied using reverse phase high performance liquid chromatograph. The study examined the effects of acetonitrile percentage in the sample solvent from 5 to 50%, effects of methanol percentage from 5 to 50%, effects of pH increase from 4.42 to 9.10, and effect of increasing buffer concentration from ° to 0.12M. The effects were studied at constant and increasing injection mass and at four injection volumes of 10, 50, 100 and 200 uL. The study demonstrated that the amount and the type of the organic solvents, the pH, and the buffer strength of the sample solution can have a pronounced effect on the peak heights, peak widths, and retention times of compounds analysed. MBC, which is capable of intramolecular hydrogen bonding and has no tendency to ionize, showed a predictable increase .in band broadening and a decrease in retention times at higher eluting strengths of the sample solvent. STB, which has a tendency to ionize or to strongly interact with the sample solvent, was influenced in various ways by the changes in ths sample solvent composition. The sample solvent effects became more pronounced as the injection volume increased and as the percentage of organic solvent in the sample solution became greater. The peak height increases for STB at increasing buffer concentrations became much more pronounced at higher analyte concentrations. It was shown that the widely accepted procedure of dissolving samples in the mobile phase does not yield the most efficient chromatograms. For that reason samples should be dissolved in the solutions with higher aqueous content than that of the mobile phase whenever possible. The results strongly recommend that all the samples and standards, regardless whether the standards are external or internal, be analysed at a constant sample composition and a constant injection volume.
