Welland Canal Survey of Lands Garrett Vanderburgh, 1826

Survey map and description of Garret Vanderburgh's land created by The Welland Canal Company. Included is a written description of the land along with a drawing of the land. Noteable features include; division between Swayze and Carl's land. The deed for the land is dated November 9th, 1826. The land totals 36 acres and 26 perches. Surveyor notes are seen in pencil on the map.

Welland Canal/St. Lawrence Seaway Authority fonds, 1826-1880, 1905-1951

The Welland Canal Company was formed in 1824 by William Hamilton Merritt. Construction of the first Welland Canal began in 1829 and was completed in 1834. The canal ran south from Port Dalhousie along Twelve Mile Creek to St. Catharines. An extension was built in 1833 to Gravelly Bay, now Port Colborne. As ships became larger and the wooden locks deteriorated, the need for a new canal became apparent. In 1839, the government purchased the Welland Canal Company’s assets and began making plans for the construction of a second canal. Construction began in 1841 and was completed by 1845. In 1887, a third Welland Canal was completed, which operated until 1932, when a fourth canal was completed. This canal remains in operation today.

Oliver Rising Sr. Diary, 1797-1851

Oliver Rising (1775-1855) lived in Herkimer County, New York. He is buried in Cedar Lake Cemetery, Cedar Lake (part of the town of Litchfield) in Herkimer County, with his wife Hannah (1780-1855) and his son Oliver Rising Jr. (1817-1861).

An Invoice for Mr. W. Cowan form Alex Hutchison, totalling $1000.00. The note at the bottom of the invoice reads "I have nothing to communicate as Mr. Parks is just writing you. Hoping you and your family are all well with respect I am dear Sir, Yours Truly Alex Hutchison"

A fire insurance policy in the amount of one thousand dollars through Aetna Insurance Company of Utica, New York. The cost of twenty two dollars and twenty five cents would give them a one year insurance policy from August 1851 through August 1852.

Diary of Oliver Rising Senior,1797-1851

A diary and account book of Oliver Rising Senior, of Herkimer County, New York. The diary includes a black and white photograph of Esther Rising Myers and one of Rev. John Myers pasted onto the pages. Oliver recounts his travels into Canada through Chippawa, Niagara Falls, and the garrison at Little York in 1797 (p. 61-62). He also describes the British invasion of Sacket’s Harbour in 1812 (p. 100).
