Exploring the personal and professional lives of teachers in the search for authenticity /

"We teach who we are" (Palmer, 1998, p. 2). This simple, yet profound, statement was the catalyst that began my thesis journey. Using a combination of self-study and participant narratives, Palmer's idea was explored as search for authenticity. The self-study component of this narrative was enhanced by the stories of two other teachers, both women. I chose to use narrative methodology to uncover and discover the relationship between the personal and professional lives of being a teacher. Do teachers express themselves daily in their classrooms? Do any lessons from the classroom translate into teachers' personal lives? The themes of reflection, authenticity, truth, and professional development thread themselves throughout this narrative study. In order to be true to myself as a teacher/researcher, arts-based interpretations accompany my own and each participant's profile. Our conversations about our pasts, our growth as teachers and journeys as individuals were captured in poetry and photographic mosaics. Through rich and detailed stories we explored who we are as teachers and how we became this way. The symbiotic relationship between our personal and professional lives was illustrated by tales of bravery, self-discovery, and reflection. The revelations uncovered illustrate the powerful role our past plays in shaping the present and potentially the friture. It may seem indulgent to spend time exploring who we are as teachers in a time that is increasingly focused on improving student test scores. Yet, the truth remains that, "Knowing myself is as crucial to good teaching as knowing my students and my subject" (Palmer, 1998, p. 2).

The nature of compounds: A psychocentric perspective

Although compound words often seem to be words that themselves contain words, this paper argues that this is not the case for the vast majority of lexicalized compounds. Rather, it is claimed that as a result of acts of lexical processing, the constituents of compound words develop into new lexical representations. These representations are bound to specific morphological roles and positions (e.g., head, modifier) within a compound word. The development of these positionally bound compound constituents creates a rich network of lexical knowledge that facilitates compound processing and also creates some of the well-documented patterns in the psycholinguistic and neurolinguistic study of compounding.

Raman spectra of polymethyl methacrylate optical fibres excited by a 532 nm diode pumped solid state laser

Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) optical fibres are fabricated by a preform drawing process. The Raman spectra of PMMA fibres are recorded using a diode pumped solid state laser emitting at 532 nm and a CCD-spectrograph in the 400–3800 cm−1 range. The variation of the Raman intensity with the length of the optical fibre is studied. Investigations are carried out on the variation of FWHM of the Raman peak at 2957 cm−1 with the length of the optical fibre and pump power. The differential scattering cross section and gain coefficient of the Raman peak at 2957 cm−1 in PMMA are calculated in relation to that of toluene.

A sensitive fibre optic pH sensor using multiple sol-gel coatings

The fabrication and characterization of a fibre optic pH sensor based on evanescent wave absorption is presented. The unclad portion of a multi-mode optical fibre is coated with a pH sensitive dye, which is immobilized by the sol–gel route. The sensitivity of the device has been found to increase when multiple sol–gel coatings are used as the sensing region. The dynamic range and the temporal response of the sensor are investigated for two different dyes, namely bromocresol purple and bromocresol green. The performance of the device is evaluated in terms of the results obtained during actual measurements.

Light amplification in dye doped polymer films

We report unusual spectral narrowing and laser emission from polymer thin films doped with Coumarin 540 dye. The laser emission from the polymer films is found to be highly dependent upon the excitation length of the medium. Even a short length of 1.75 mm of the dye doped film gave rise to laser emission with FWHM of 0.3 nm for a pump intensity of 825 kW cm−2. The partial reflections from the broad lateral surfaces of the free standing films provided the optical feedback for the laser emission. Occurrence of well-resolved equally spaced resonant modes confirmed the effect of a Fabry–Perot-like optical cavity between the film surfaces.

Full complex Fresnel holograms displayed on liquid cristal displays

We propose a method to display full complex Fresnel holograms by adding the information displayed on two analogue ferroelectric liquid crystal spatial light modulators. One of them works in real-only configuration and the other in imaginary-only mode. The Fresnel holograms are computed by backpropagating an object at a selected distance with the Fresnel transform. Then, displaying the real and imaginary parts on each panel, the object is reconstructed at that distance from the modulators by simple propagation of light. We present simulation results taking into account the specifications of the modulators as well as optical results. We have also studied the quality of reconstructions using only real, imaginary, amplitude or phase information. Although the real and imaginary reconstructions look acceptable for certain distances, full complex reconstruction is always better and is required when arbitrary distances are used.

Parallel Methods for Synthesizing Whole-Hand Grasps from Generalized Prototypes

This report addresses the problem of acquiring objects using articulated robotic hands. Standard grasps are used to make the problem tractable, and a technique is developed for generalizing these standard grasps to increase their flexibility to variations in the problem geometry. A generalized grasp description is applied to a new problem situation using a parallel search through hand configuration space, and the result of this operation is a global overview of the space of good solutions. The techniques presented in this report have been implemented, and the results are verified using the Salisbury three-finger robotic hand.

Analysis of Michael Porter’s generic strategies and its usage in a globalized business environment

Michael Porter reconocido como una autoridad en estrategia nos ha motivado a entrar a analizar profundamente sus propuestas e ideas en el campo de su dominio, con el objetivo de analizarlas y validarlas en el actual ambiente de negocios, caracterizado por ser turbulento y dinámico. El método elegido fue contratar éste ambiente con el ambiente bajo el cual se crearon las propuestas estratégicas de Michael Porter. Para esto, nos enfocamos en su propuesta para la estrategia de negocio, específicamente, las Tres Estrategias Genéricas. Tomando el caso de estudio de ZARA y su trayectoria empresarial como una investigación empírica para obtener resultados y discutirlos bajo parámetros que surgen desde las críticas desarrolladas por otros autores. Tomando como fuente de información libros, ensayos, publicaciones en Internet, noticias, entrevistas a clientes y a sus empleados.

El cor del Colegio Bilingüe Ciudad Vieja inaugura l’exposició Dones Mestres d’Uruguai cantant una selecció de temes amb tradició de carnaval. Trenta-sis xiquets i xiquetes, acompanyats per professorat del centre, interpreten cançons populars vinculades al patrimoni festiu del recinte històric de la ciutat i de les rodalies del seu port. La majoria dels alumnes que ara canten havien dibuixat abans a les seues mestres, dibuixos que han estat distribuïts a les parets de la sala, pintures que retraten a unes mestres que havien posat a les seues aules per ser retratades pels seus alumnes
