La modernidad ha sido unos de los conceptos centrales de laS ciencias sociales occidentales y un tema fundamental del imaginario histórico occidental y un tema fundamental del imaginario histórico occidental. El tema de la relación entre la modernidad y América Latina ha generado un intenso debate en el campo de las ciencias sociales durante los últimos años. El presente estudio analiza la contribución que sobre este tema han realizado un grupo de estudiosos latinoamericanos dedicado a "deconstuir" la modernidad bajo la bandera del enfoque posoccidental. Enrique Dussel, Walter Mignolo, Fernando Coronil, Arturo Escobar y Santiago Castro-Gómez, son los más representativos dentro de esta corriente de pensamiento. La descontrucción posoccidental de la modernidad, basada en la crítica posestruturalista y poscolonial, denuncia el carácter eurocéntrico del conocimiento, analiza críticamente la relación entre centro y periferia dentro del sistema capitalista global y considera de una manera distintiva el rol que los pueblos no europeos e históricamente colonizados han brindado a la construcción del llamado “mundo moderno”. El análisis del enfoque posoccidental que Jed Shlosberg acomete, se presenta como una genealogía crítica del concepto modernidad y de los nexos que estos autores mantiene con el enfoque del sistema mundo y la teoría de la dependencia.

Hay una historia del saqueo de la naturaleza, de la explotación de las personas, de la dominación a las mujeres, de maltrato a los niños y desprecio a los ancianos, pero hay también una historia de cuidado y reproducción de la vida, de conocimientos y de construcción de alternativas Los pueblos han mantenido formas de resistencia contra las diferentes formas de opresión y han inventado alternativas para enfrentar el ataque contra los territorios, contra la naturaleza y contra las familias. En esa larga historia de los pueblos se han desarrollado herramientas de trabajo para recoger las aspiraciones y entender las necesidades de las comunidades en diálogo con lo que ocurre en el lugar. Las mejores herramientas han nacido, se han recreado y se han intercambiado desde los haceres y saberes de las mismas comunidades: • Las asambleas como espacios en donde se piensa, se decide y se celebra juntos. • La memoria de los haceres del pasado, de las luchas y de las experiencias de los mayores. • El conocimiento de la relación de todo con todo, de los bosques con el agua, de los suelos, con la biodiversidad, de los cultivos con la cultura, y así sucesivamente. • El conocimiento colectivo sobre el tiempo, los ciclos de la naturaleza, el uso de las plantas medicinales, la agricultura, las artes de la caza, la pesca y la artesanía. • El reconocimiento de los efectos y de las reacciones de la naturaleza en respuesta a las agresiones y a la destrucción. • Las huellas de la penetración del capitalismo dentro de las comunidades con manifestaciones de competencia, individualismo, corrupción. Desde los movimientos sociales y desde las universidades también se han construido herramientas y métodos para identificar, recoger y organizar la información, así como también para presentarla en los escenarios más formales, de tal manera que no sea descalificada o desvalorizada. Esta guía pretende sumar herramientas y compartir metodologías de dentro y de fuera. Aporta con elementos para recoger, organizar y utilizar la información: Construir diagnósticos y estrategias participativas • Facilitar elementos que permitan explicar de mejor manera los efectos de las intervenciones foráneas. • Diseñar y compartir estrategias de protección, de incidencia y de resistencia.

High resolution infrared spectra of the ν9 and ν10 perpendicular fundamentals of the allene molecule are reported, in which the J structure in the sub-bands has been partially resolved. Analysis of the latter shows that the vibrational origin ν9 = 999 cm−1, some 35 cm−1 below previous assignments. The pronounced asymmetry in the intensity distribution of the rotational structure which this assignment implies is shown to be expected theoretically, due to the Coriolis perturbations involved, and it is interpreted in terms of the sign and magnitude of the ratio of the dipole moment derivatives in the two fundamentals. The results of this analysis are shown to be in good agreement with observations on allene-1.1-d2, where similar intensity perturbations are observed, and with an independent analysis of the ν8 band of allene-h4. The A rotational constant of allene-h4 is found to have the value 4.82 ± 0.01 cm−1, and for the molecular geometry we obtain r(CH) = 1.084 A, r(CC) = 1.308 A, and HCH = 118.4°. A partial analysis of the rotational structure of the hot bands (ν9 + ν11 − ν11) and (ν10 + ν11 − ν11) is presented; these provide an example of a strong Coriolis interaction between nearly degenerate A1A2 and B1B2 pairs of vibrational levels. Some localized rotational perturbations in the ν9 and ν10 fundamentals are also noted, and their possible interpretations are discussed.

In mammalian cells, DNA ligase IIIalpha and DNA ligase I participate in the short- and long-patch base excision repair pathways, respectively. Using an in vitro repair assay employing DNA ligase-depleted cell extracts and DNA substrates containing a single lesion repaired either through short-patch (regular abasic site) or long-patch (reduced abasic site) base excision repair pathways, we addressed the question whether DNA ligases are specific to each pathway or if they are exchangeable. We find that immunodepletion of DNA ligase I did not affect the short-patch repair pathway but blocked long-patch repair, suggesting that DNA ligase IIIa is not able to substitute DNA ligase I during long-patch repair. In contrast, immunodepletion of DNA ligase IIIa did not significantly affect either pathway. Moreover, repair of normal abasic sites in wild-type and X-ray cross-complementing gene 1 (XRCC1)-DNA ligase IIIalpha-immunodepleted cell extracts involved similar proportions of short- and long-patch repair events. This suggests that DNA ligase I was able to efficiently substitute the XRCC1-DNA ligase IIIa complex during short-patch repair.

Obesity is sweeping the westernized world at a rate which far outstrips human genomic evolution, highlighting the importance of the obesogenic environment. Diet is an important component of this obesogenic environment, with certain diets (high fat, high refined carbohydrates and sugar) predisposing to overweight. On the other hand, there are also foods shown to protect against obesity and the diseases of obesity, including whole plant foods, dairy products, dietary fibre and functional foods like probiotics, prebiotics and phytochemicals. Interestingly, many of these foods mediate their health-promoting activities through the gut microbiota. The human gut microbiota itself has recently been identified as a contributory factor in this obesogenic environment, with differences observed between lean and obese. Evidence from human studies indicates that important groups of fermentative bacteria differ in abundance between lean and obese. Recently it has been suggested that anomalous microbiota composition in infancy can predispose to overweight in later life, highlighting the important role of optimal microbiota successional development, and that – as observed in laboratory animals – the gut microbiota may contribute to the aetiology of obesity. In this review we will introduce the gut microbiota, describe its interactions with major dietary components and the host, and then go on to discuss evidence indicating that the gut microbiota may contribute to the obesogenic environment. Finally, we will explore possible strategies for modulating the composition and activity of the human gut microbiota which may impact on obesity or the metabolic diseases associated with obesity. Modern methods of analysis applied to cemeteries have often been used in our pages to suggest generalities about mobility and diet. But these same techniques applied to a single individual, together with the grave goods and burial rite, can open a special kind of personal window on the past. Here, the authors of a multidisciplinary project use a combination of scientific techniques to illuminate Roman York, and later Roman history in general, with their image of a glamorous mixed-race woman, in touch with Africa, Christianity, Rome and Yorkshire.

Induction of humoral responses to HIV at mucosal compartments without inflammation is important for vaccine design. We developed charged wax nanoparticles that efficiently adsorb protein antigens and are internalized by DC in the absence of inflammation. HIV-gp140-adsorbed nanoparticles induced stronger in vitro T-cell proliferation responses than antigen alone. Such responses were greatly enhanced when antigen was co-adsorbed with TLR ligands. Immunogenicity studies in mice showed that intradermal vaccination with HIV-gp140 antigen-adsorbed nanoparticles induced high levels of specific IgG. Importantly, intranasal immunization with HIV-gp140-adsorbed nanoparticles greatly enhanced serum and vaginal IgG and IgA responses. Our results show that HIV-gp140-carrying wax nanoparticles can induce strong cellular/humoral immune responses without inflammation and may be of potential use as effective mucosal adjuvants for HIV vaccine candidates.

Finds of metalwork always raise the question of why they were deposited: a smith's collection, a concealed hoard or a votive offering? Findspots in water suggest offerings, since they would be awkward to retrieve. But understanding the context of deposition means knowing the prehistoric environment. The Fenland area of England has many Bronze Age sites, and deposits of metalwork and a well-mapped ancient environment too. Putting all three together the authors begin to assemble a grammar of deposition: swords and rapiers in rivers, some mixed collections placed in still water and others on once-dry land with burnt mounds.

UV–Vis absorption spectra of one-electron reduction products and 3MLCT excited states of [ReICl(CO)3- (N,N)] (N,N = 2,20-bipyridine, bpy; 1,10-phenanthroline, phen) have been measured by low-temperature spectroelectrochemistry and UV–Vis transient absorption spectroscopy, respectively, and assigned by open-shell TD-DFT calculations. The characters of the electronic transitions are visualized and analyzed using electron density redistribution maps. It follows that reduced and excited states can be approximately formulated as [ReICl(CO)3(N,Nÿ)]ÿ and ⁄[ReIICl(CO)3(N,Nÿ)], respectively. UV–Vis spectra of the reduced complexes are dominated by IL transitions, plus weaker MLCT contributions. Excited-state spectra show an intense band in the UV region of 50% IL origin mixed with LMCT (bpy, 373 nm) or MLCT (phen, 307 nm) excitations. Because of the significant IL contribution, this spectral feature is akin to the principal IL band of the anions. In contrast, the excited-state visible spectral pattern arises from predominantly LMCT transitions, any resemblance with the reduced-state visible spectra being coincidental. The Re complexes studied herein are representatives of a broad class of metal a-diimines, for which similar spectroscopic behavior can be expected.

Meteorological (met) station data is used as the basis for a number of influential studies into the impacts of the variability of renewable resources. Real turbine output data is not often easy to acquire, whereas meteorological wind data, supplied at a standardised height of 10 m, is widely available. This data can be extrapolated to a standard turbine height using the wind profile power law and used to simulate the hypothetical power output of a turbine. Utilising a number of met sites in such a manner can develop a model of future wind generation output. However, the accuracy of this extrapolation is strongly dependent on the choice of the wind shear exponent alpha. This paper investigates the accuracy of the simulated generation output compared to reality using a wind farm in North Rhins, Scotland and a nearby met station in West Freugh. The results show that while a single annual average value for alpha may be selected to accurately represent the long term energy generation from a simulated wind farm, there are significant differences between simulation and reality on an hourly power generation basis, with implications for understanding the impact of variability of renewables on short timescales, particularly system balancing and the way that conventional generation may be asked to respond to a high level of variable renewable generation on the grid in the future.

Our digital universe is rapidly expanding,more and more daily activities are digitally recorded, data arrives in streams, it needs to be analyzed in real time and may evolve over time. In the last decade many adaptive learning algorithms and prediction systems, which can automatically update themselves with the new incoming data, have been developed. The majority of those algorithms focus on improving the predictive performance and assume that model update is always desired as soon as possible and as frequently as possible. In this study we consider potential model update as an investment decision, which, as in the financial markets, should be taken only if a certain return on investment is expected. We introduce and motivate a new research problem for data streams ? cost-sensitive adaptation. We propose a reference framework for analyzing adaptation strategies in terms of costs and benefits. Our framework allows to characterize and decompose the costs of model updates, and to asses and interpret the gains in performance due to model adaptation for a given learning algorithm on a given prediction task. Our proof-of-concept experiment demonstrates how the framework can aid in analyzing and managing adaptation decisions in the chemical industry.

Satellite-based (e.g., Synthetic Aperture Radar [SAR]) water level observations (WLOs) of the floodplain can be sequentially assimilated into a hydrodynamic model to decrease forecast uncertainty. This has the potential to keep the forecast on track, so providing an Earth Observation (EO) based flood forecast system. However, the operational applicability of such a system for floods developed over river networks requires further testing. One of the promising techniques for assimilation in this field is the family of ensemble Kalman (EnKF) filters. These filters use a limited-size ensemble representation of the forecast error covariance matrix. This representation tends to develop spurious correlations as the forecast-assimilation cycle proceeds, which is a further complication for dealing with floods in either urban areas or river junctions in rural environments. Here we evaluate the assimilation of WLOs obtained from a sequence of real SAR overpasses (the X-band COSMO-Skymed constellation) in a case study. We show that a direct application of a global Ensemble Transform Kalman Filter (ETKF) suffers from filter divergence caused by spurious correlations. However, a spatially-based filter localization provides a substantial moderation in the development of the forecast error covariance matrix, directly improving the forecast and also making it possible to further benefit from a simultaneous online inflow error estimation and correction. Additionally, we propose and evaluate a novel along-network metric for filter localization, which is physically-meaningful for the flood over a network problem. Using this metric, we further evaluate the simultaneous estimation of channel friction and spatially-variable channel bathymetry, for which the filter seems able to converge simultaneously to sensible values. Results also indicate that friction is a second order effect in flood inundation models applied to gradually varied flow in large rivers. The study is not conclusive regarding whether in an operational situation the simultaneous estimation of friction and bathymetry helps the current forecast. Overall, the results indicate the feasibility of stand-alone EO-based operational flood forecasting.

The influence of the interlayer coupling on formation of the quantized Hall phase at the filling factor v = 2 was studied in the multilayer GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures The disorder broaden Gaussian photoluminescence line due to the localized electrons was found in the quantized Hall phase of the isolated multi-quantum well structure On the other hand. the quantized Hall phase of the weakly-coupled multilayers emitted an asymmetrical line similar to that one observed in the metallic electron systems. We demonstrated that the observed asymmetry indicates a formation of the Fermi Surface in the quantized Hall phase of the multilayer electron system due to the interlayer peicolation. A sharp decrease of the single-particle scattering time associated with the extended states oil the Fermi surface was observed at the filling factor v = 2. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V All rights reserved
