The need to obtain ocean color essential climate variables (OC-ECVs) using hyperspectral technology has gained increased interest in recent years. Assessing ocean color on a large scale in high latitude environments using satellite remote sensing is constrained by polar environmental conditions. Nevertheless, on a small scale we can assess ocean color using above-water and in-water remote sensing. Unfortunately, above-water remote sensing can only determine apparent optical properties leaving the sea surface and is susceptible to near surface environmental conditions for example sky and sunglint. Consequently, we have to rely on accurate in-water remote sensing as it can provide both synoptic inherent and apparent optical properties of seawater. We use normalized water leaving radiance LWN or the equivalent remote sensing reflectance RRS from 27 stations to compare the differences in above-water and in-water OC-ECVs. Analysis of above-water and in-water RRS spectra provided very good match-ups (R2 > 0.97, MSE<1.8*10**-7) for all stations. The unbiased percent differences (UPD) between above-water and in-water approaches were determined at common OC-ECVs spectral bands (410, 440, 490, 510 and 555) nm and the classic band ratio (490/555) nm. The spectral average UPD ranged (5 - 110) % and band ratio UPD ranged (0 - 12) %, the latter showing that the 5% uncertainty threshold for ocean color radiometric products is attainable. UPD analysis of these stations West of Greenland, Labrador Sea, Denmark Strait and West of Iceland also suggests that the differences observed are likely a result of environmental and instrumental perturbations.

Studies of interstitial waters obtained from DSDP Leg 64 drill sites in the Gulf of California have revealed information both on early diagenetic processes in the sediments resulting from the breakdown of organic matter and on hydrothermal interactions between sediments and hot doleritic sill intrusions into the sediments. In all the sites drilled sulfate reduction occurred as a result of rapid sediment accumulation rates and of relatively high organic carbon contents; in most sites methane production occurred after sulfate depletion. Associated with this methane production are high values of alkalinity and high concentrations of dissolved ammonia, which causes ion exchange processes with the solid phases leading to intermediate maxima in Mg++, K+, Rb+, and Sr++(?). Though this phenomenon is common in Leg 64 drill sites, these concentration reversals had been noticed previously only in Site 262 (Timor Trough) and Site 440 (Japan Trench). Penetrating, hot dolerite sills have led to substantial hydrothermal alteration in sediments at sites drilled in the Guaymas Basin. Site 477 is an active hydrothermal system in which the pore-water chemistry typically shows depletions in sulfate and magnesium and large increases in lithium, potassium, rubidium, calcium, strontium, and chloride. Strontium isotope data also indicate large contributions of volcanic matter and basalt to the pore-water strontium concentrations. At Sites 478 and 481 dolerite sill intrusions have cooled to ambient temperatures but interstitial water concentrations of Li+, Rb+, Sr++ , and Cl- show the gradual decay of a hydrothermal signal that must have been similar to the interstitial water chemistry at Site 477 at the time of sill intrusion. Studies of oxygen isotopes of the interstitial waters at Site 481 indicate positive values of d18O (SMOW) as a result of high-temperature alteration reactions occurring in the sills and the surrounding sediments. A minimum in dissolved chloride at about 100-125 meters sub-bottom at Sites 478, 481, and particularly Site 479 records a possible paleosalinity signal, associated with an event that substantially lowered salinities in the inner parts of the Gulf of California during Quaternary time.

The shape and morphology of the northern Barbados Ridge complex is largely controlled by the sediment yield and failure behavior in response to high lateral loads imposed by convergence. Loads in excess of sediment yield strength result in nonrecoverable deformations within the wedge, and failure strength acts as an upper limit beyond which stresses are released through thrust faults. Relatively high loading rates lead to delayed consolidation and in-situ pore pressures greater than hydrostatic. The sediment yield and failure behavior is described for any stress path by a generalized constitutive model. A yield locus delineates the onset of plastic (non-recoverable) deformation, as defined from the isotropic and anisotropic consolidation responses of high-quality 38-mm triaxial specimens; a failure envelope was obtained by shearing the same specimens in both triaxial compression and extension. The yield locus is shown to be rotated into extension space and is centered about a K-line greater than unity, suggesting that the in-situ major principal stress has rotated into the horizontal plane, and that the sediment wedge is being subjected to extensional effective stress paths.

The mineralogy of both bulk- and clay-sized fractions of samples from Sites 671, 672, and 674 of ODP Leg 110 was determined by X-ray diffraction. The major minerals include quartz, calcite, plagioclase feldspar, and the clay minerals smectite, illite, and kaolinite. The smectite is a dioctahedral montmorillonite and is derived primarily from degradation of volcanic ash. Percentage of smectite varies with sediment age; Miocene and Eocene sediments are the most smectite-rich. High smectite content tends to correlate with elevated porosity, presumably because of the ability of smectite clays to absorb significant amounts of interlayer water. Because of a change in physical properties, the decollement zone at Site 671 formed in sediments immediately subjacent to a section of smectite-rich, high-porosity, Miocene-age sediments. Sediments above the decollement at Site 671, as well as all sediments analyzed from Sites 672 and 674, contain nearly pure smectite characteristic of the alteration of volcanic ash. Within the decollement zone and underthrust sequence, however, the smectite contains up to 65% illite interlayers. Although the illite/smectite could be interpreted as detrital clay derived from South America, its absence in the sediments stratigraphically equivalent to the decollement and underthrust sequences at Sites 672 and 674 favors the interpretation that it originated by diagenetic alteration of pre-existing smectite similar to that in the overlying sediments. A significant percentage of the freshening of the pore waters observed in these zones could be due to the water released during smectite dehydration.
