Due to increasing water scarcity, accelerating industrialization and urbanization, efficiency of irrigation water use in Northern China needs urgent improvement. Based on a sample of 347 wheat growers in the Guanzhong Plain, this paper simultaneously estimates a production function, and its corresponding first-order conditions for cost minimization, to analyze efficiency of irrigation water use. The main findings are that average technical, allocative, and overall economic efficiency are 0.35, 0.86 and 0.80, respectively. In a second stage analysis, we find that farmers’ perception of water scarcity, water price and irrigation infrastructure increase irrigation water allocative efficiency, while land fragmentation decreases it. We also show that farmers’ income loss due to higher water prices can be offset by increasing irrigation water use efficiency.

The pleiotropic effects of host defence peptides (HDPs), including the ability to kill microorganisms, enhance re-epithelialisation and increase angiogenesis, indicates a role for these important peptides as potential therapeutic agents in the treatment of chronic, non-healing wounds. However, the maintenance of peptide integrity, through resistance to degradation by the array of proteinases present at the wound site, is a prerequisite for clinical success. In this study we explored the degradation of exogenous LL-37, one such HDP, by wound fluid from diabetic foot ulcers to determine its susceptibility to proteolytic degradation. Our results suggest that LL-37 is unstable in the diabetic foot ulcer microenvironment. Following overnight treatment with wound fluid, LL-37 was completely degraded. Analysis of cleavage sites suggested potential involvement of both host- and bacterial-derived proteinases. The degradation products were shown to retain some antibacterial activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa but were inactive against Staphylococcus aureus. In conclusion, our data suggest that stabilising selected peptide bonds within the sequence of LL-37 would represent an avenue for future research prior to clinical studies to address its potential as an exogenously-applied therapeutic in diabetic wounds.

Previous studies have demonstrated that rice cultivated under flooded conditions has higher concentrations of arsenic (As) but lower cadmium (Cd) compared to rice grown in unsaturated soils. To validate such effects over long terms under Mediterranean conditions a field experiment, conducted over 7 successive years was established in SW Spain. The impact of water management on rice production and grain arsenic (As) and cadmium (Cd) was measured, and As speciation was determined to inform toxicity evaluation. Sprinkler irrigation was compared to traditional flooding.

Both irrigation techniques resulted in similar grain yields (similar to 3000 kg grain ha(-1)). Successive sprinkler irrigation over 7 years decreased grain total As to one-sixth its initial concentration in the flooded system (0.55 to 0.09 mg As kg(-1)), while one cycle of sprinkler irrigation also reduced grain total As by one-third (0.20 mg kg(-1)). Grain inorganic As concentration increased up to 2 folds under flooded conditions compared to sprinkler irrigated fields while organic As was also lower in sprinkler system treatments, but to a lesser extent. This suggests that methylation is favored under water logging. However, sprinkler irrigation increased Cd transfer to grain by a factor of 10, reaching 0.05 mg Cd kg(-1) in 7 years. Sprinlder systems in paddy fields seem particularly suited for Mediterranean climates and are able to mitigate against excessive As accumulation, but our evidence shows that an increased Cd load in rice grain may result.

A study was undertaken to determine the effects of different concentrations of arsenic (As) in irrigation water on Boro (dry-season) rice (Oryza sativa) and their residual effects on the following Aman (wet-season) rice. There were six treatments, with 0, 0.1, 0.25, 0.5, 1, and 2 mg As L-1 applied as disodium hydrogen arsenate. All the growth and yield parameters of Boro rice responded positively at lower concentrations of up to 0.25 mg As L-1 in irrigation water but decreased sharply at concentrations more than 0.5 mg As L-1. Arsenic concentrations in grain and straw of Boro rice increased significantly with increasing concentration of As in irrigation water. The grain As concentration was in the range of 0.25 to 0.97 μg g-1 and its concentration in rice straw varied from 2.4 to 9.6 μg g-1 over the treatments. Residual As from previous Boro rice showed a very similar pattern in the following Aman rice, although As concentration in Aman rice grain and straw over the treatments was almost half of the As levels in Boro rice grain. Arsenic concentrations in both grain and straw of Boro and Aman rice were found to correlate with iron and be antagonistic with phosphorus. Copyright © Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

In this paper we compare conceptualising single factor technical and allocative efficiency as indicators of a single latent variable, or as separate observed variables. In the former case, the impacts on both efficiency types are analysed by means of structural equation modeling (SEM), in the latter by seemingly unrelated regression (SUR). We compare estimation results of the two approaches based on a dataset on single factor irrigation water use efficiency obtained from a survey of 360 farmers in the Guanzhong Plain, China. The main methodological findings are that SEM allows identification of the most important dimension of irrigation water efficiency (technical efficiency) via comparison of their factor scores and reliability. Moreover, it reduces multicollinearity and attenuation bias. It thus is preferable to SUR. The SEM estimates show that perception of water scarcity is the most important positive determinant of both types of efficiency, followed by irrigation infrastructure, income and water price. Furthermore, there is a strong negative reverse effect from efficiency on perception.

Introduction: As a result of chronic inflammation during periodontal disease the junctional epithelium becomes micro-ulcerated. The inflammatory process is mediated by both bacterial and host cell products. Host defence peptides such as defensins, secretory leucocyte protease inhibitor (SLPI) and the sole human cathelicidin, LL-37, are secreted by both periodontal cells and neutrophils into gingival crevicular fluid (GCF). They have the ability to modulate the immune response in periodontitis and are thought to have a potential role in periodontal wound healing. Objectives: The aims of this study were to determine the role of LL-37 in the production of Interleukin (IL)-8, IL-6, hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) and basic-fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) by gingival fibroblasts. The role of LL-37 in modulating total matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) activity and expression of tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinase (TIMP)-1 and -2 by gingival fibroblasts was also investigated. Methods: Primary gingival fibroblasts were co-cultured with concentrations of LL-37 (1, 5 and 10µg/ml) for 24 hours and their supernatants tested for levels of IL-8 and IL-6, HGF, bFGF, TIMP-1 and TIMP-2 by ELISA. Rates of MMP turnover in the supernatants were tested by fluorogenic assay using fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) peptide substrates. Cytotoxicity was measured by MTT assay. Statistical significance was measured using the independent t-test and p<0.05 was considered significant. Results: LL-37 significantly upregulated levels of IL-8, IL-6, HGF, bFGF and TIMP-1 (p<0.05) in a dose-dependent fashion. LL-37 significantly decreased the total MMP activity (p<0.05). None of the LL-37 concentrations tested were cytotoxic to gingival fibroblasts. Conclusion: These results indicate that LL-37 is involved in periodontal wound healing. LL-37 increased levels of proinflammatory cytokines and increased levels of growth factors involved in re-epithelialisation. LL-37 has the ability to regulate remodelling of the periodontium by controlling MMP overactivity both directly and by stimulating production of inhibitors by gingival fibroblasts.

In this paper, an automatic Smart Irrigation Decision Support System, SIDSS, is proposed to manage irrigation in agriculture. Our system estimates the weekly irrigations needs of a plantation, on the basis of both soil measurements and climatic variables gathered by several autonomous nodes deployed in field. This enables a closed loop control scheme to adapt the decision support system to local perturbations and estimation errors. Two machine learning techniques, PLSR and ANFIS, are proposed as reasoning engine of our SIDSS. Our approach is validated on three commercial plantations of citrus trees located in the South-East of Spain. Performance is tested against decisions taken by a human expert.

This article analyses adoption of farm-based irrigation water saving techniques, based on a cross-sectional data set of 357 farmers in the Guanzhong Plain, China. Approximately 83% of the farmers use at least one farm-based water-saving technique. However, the traditional, inefficient techniques border and furrow irrigation are still prevalent whereas the use of advanced, more efficient techniques is still rather rare. We develop and estimate an adoption model consisting of two stages: awareness of water scarcity and intensity of adoption. We find that awareness of water scarcity and financial status enhance adoption of more advanced techniques whereas access to better community-based irrigation infrastructure discourages it. We furthermore find both community-based irrigation infrastructure and farm-based irrigation water-saving techniques have mitigating effects on production risk. From the results it follows that adoption can be stimulated via financial support and via extension aimed at enhancing awareness of water scarcity.

The market for table grapes is moving into mass production of specialty seed-less grapes in covered areas, aiming at obtaining premium prices with early or late production of high quality products. Production of quality seedless grapes is not straightforward since it is requires the correct combination of various independent characteristics, such as color, sugars, size and quantity at the right moment for successful harvesting and marketing. The present study was carried out at the two largest Portuguese producers located in Alentejo, and has the objective of studying the effect of irrigation management strategies and two different soils on the various relevant parameters for successful production and marketing. The management strategies were the application of ten day stress at the end of the cycle, in order to promote early maturing of the grapes. Three different timings of the stress were applied. Soil moisture, sap flow, bark thickness, as well as leaf water potential, stomatal conductance and chlorophyll content were measured regularly during the production season. The results indicate that the roots explore a rather large soil volume and the plants can successfully withstand reasonable periods of drought without significant changes to the plant physiology. Additionally late rains can mask the effect of any farmer applied drought and invalidate any farmer induced stress to the plants. Water-logged soils tend to cause early onset of maturity, but cause the ripening stage to extend over a longer period of time, and thus, in effect result in a delay in the harvest date. Topography also has some effect on the ripening, since hot air tends to accumulate under the plastic at the higher areas of the field. The management of wound bioburden has previously been evaluated using various antimicrobial wound dressings on bacterial pathogens isolated from various wounds. In this present study, the antimicrobial effect of silver-impregnated dressings (Acticoat and Silvercel) and honey-impregnated dressing (Medihoney™ Apinate) on both planktonic bacteria and quasi-biofilms by Staphylococcus aureus and Proteus mirabilis were assessed using a 6-well plate and standard agar technique. In the 6-well plate assay, a bacterial suspension of 108 colony forming unit (CFU)/mL was inoculated on each dressing in excess Luria-Bertani broth and incubated at 35 – 37°C for 30 and 60 minutes and 24 hours. After each incubation time, bacteria were recovered in sodium thioglycolate solution (STS) and the CFU/mL determined on LB agar. Dressings were cut into circular shapes (2cm diameter and placed on Mueller Hinton agar plates pre-inoculated with bacterial suspensions to determine their zones of inhibition (ZOI) after 24 hours incubation. None of the dressings was effective to significantly inhibit bacterial growth or biofilm formation at all the times tested. Acticoat and Medihoney™ Apinate produced ZOIs between 1.5 – 15 mm against both Staphylococcus aureus and Proteus mirabilis. It is possible that, dressings augmented with antibiotics can significantly reduce quasi-biofilms on standard agar.

The impact of biofilm in the effective control of wound microbiome is an ongoing dilemma which has seen the use of different treatment strategies. The effects of wound dressings and antibiotics on both planktonic bacteria and biofilms have been separately evaluated in previous studies. In this current study, the combined antimicrobial effects of some selected wound dressings (silver-impregnated: Acticoat and Silvercel; and honey-impregnated: Medihoney™ Apinate) and antibiotics (ceftazdime and levofloxacin) on Klebsiella pneumoniae and Proteus mirabilis in their quasi-biofilm state were assessed using zone of inhibition (ZOI) test. Before the addition of the wound dressings, bacterial suspension of 108 colony forming units per mL and different concentrations of ceftazidime and levofloxacin (256, 512, 1024 and 5120µg/mL) of a final volume of 1mL were inoculated on Mueller Hinton agar and allowed to dry. Wound dressings cut into circular shapes (2cm diameter) were aseptically placed on the agar plates and incubated at 35 – 37°C for 24 hours. ZOIs associated with Acticoat, Silvercel and Medihoney™ Apinate dressings were compared with that of Atrauman (non-medicated control) dressing. All three dressings showed significant (p < 0.05) biofilm-inhibiting activity against both bacteria at antibiotic concentrations of 1024 and 5120µg/mL with ZOI between 17.5 and 35mm.
