Sex pheromone biosynthesis in the female olive fruit-fly. Double labelling from [O-18(2)]-dioxygen into 1,7-dioxaspiro[5.5]undecane

The demonstration that both oxygen atoms of 1,7-dioxaspiro[5.5] undecane (1), the sex-pheromone of the female olive fly, originate from dioxygen, strongly implicates monooxygenase mediated processes in assembly of (1), and reveals unexpected complexity in the formation of its nine-carbon precursor.

Recognition of cyclic, acyclic, exocyclic, and spiro Acetals via structurally diagnostic ion/molecule reactions with the (CH3)(2)N-C+=O acylium ion

Reactions of the model acylium ion (CH3)(2)N-C+=O with acyclic, exocyclic, and Spiro acetals of the general formula (RO)-O-1-(CRR4)-R-3-OR2-upole mass spectrometry. Characteristic intrinsic reactivities were observed for each of these classes of acetals. The two most Characteristic intrinsic reactivities were observed for each of these classes of acetals. The two most common reactions observed were hydride and alkoxy anion [(RO-)-O-1 and (RO-)-O-2] abstraction. Other specific reactions were also observed: (a) a secondary polar [4(+) + 2] cycloaddition for acetals bearing alpha,beta-unsaturated R-3 or R-4 substituents and (b) OH- abstraction for exocyclic and spiro acetals. These structurally diagnostic reactions, in conjunction with others observed previously for cyclic acetals, are shown to reveal the class of the acetal molecule and its ring type and substituents and to permit their recognition and distinction from other classes of isomeric molecules.

Bioreduction of beta-carboline imines to amines employing Saccharomyces bayanus

beta-Carboline imine reductions mediated by Saccharomyces bayanus have been described achieving moderate to good enantiomeric excesses of the amine products. The enantiomeric excesses of the bioreduction showed a dependence on the imine substituents. Compounds presenting C(1)-C(11) aliphatic substituent groups afforded amines with an (S)-configuration, whereas C(15) and higher aliphatic, and aromatic substituted B-carboline imines achieved inversion of the configuration in the final (R)-2 amine products. Antifungal alkyl amino alcohols from the tropical marine sponge Haliclona n. sp.

Three new amino alcohols presumably deriving from L-alanine were isolated from the tropical marine sponge Haliclona n. sp. and characterized by 2D NMR, while a fourth amino alcohol was characterized as an acetamide derivative. Relative stereochemistry was deduced from the NMR characteristics of oxazolidinone derivatives and absolute stereochemistry secured by preparation and analysis of an MPA ester. The amino alcohol fraction from Haliclona n. sp, acts as an antifungal agent and inhibits the development of larvae of the ascidian Herdmania curvata.

Identification and total synthesis of novel fatty acids from the siphonarid limpet Siphonaria denticulata

The novel fatty acids 17-methyl-6(Z)-octadecenoic acid and 17-methyl-7(Z)-octadecenoic acid were identified for the first time in nature in the mollusk Siphonaria denticulata from Queensland, Australia. The principal fatty acids in the limpet were hexadecanoic acid, octadecanoic acid, and (Z)-9-octadecenoic acid, while the most interesting series of monounsaturated fatty acids was a family of five nonadecenoic acids with double bonds at either Delta (7), Delta (9), Delta (11), Delta (12), or Delta (13). The novel compounds were characterized using a combination of GC-MS and chemical transformations, such as dimethyl disulfide derivatization. The first total syntheses for the two novel methyl-branched nonadecenoic acids are also described, and these were accomplished in four to five steps and in high yields.

New chlorinated peptides from the tropical marine sponge Dysidea sp.

Five new chlorinated peptides (5)-(9) have been isolated from a Dysidea sp. and identified by two-dimensional NMR spectroscopy. Aryliminopropadienethiones 9 have been generated by flash vacuum thermolysis of isoxazolones of the type 5 and characterized by mass spectrometry and matrix isolation IR spectroscopy in conjunction with DFT calculations and chemical trapping.

Formation of cumulenes, triple-bonded, and related compounds by flash vacuum thermolysis of five-membered heterocycles

Flash vacuum thermolysis of a large variety of heterocyclic compounds is a useful means of production of ketenes, ketenimines, thioketenes, allenes, iminopropadienones, bis(imino)propadienes, iminopropadienethiones, carbodiimides, isothiocyanates, acetylenes, fulminic acid, nitrile imines and nitrile ylides, nitriles, cyanamides, cyanates, and other compounds, often in preparatively useful yields.
