n this paper, the design of a nonlinear excitation control of a synchronous generator is presented where the generator is connected to a single machine infinite bus (SMIB) system. An adaptive backstepping method is used to design the excitation controller with an objective of enhancing the overall dynamic stability of the SMIB system under different contingencies. In this paper, two types of contingencies are considered- i) unknown parameters and physical quantities during the controller design process and ii) controller performance evaluation under different system configurations such as three-phase short circuit faults. The adaption law, which is mainly based on the formulation of Lyapunov function, is used to estimate the unknown parameters which guarantee the convergence of different physical quantities of synchronous generators, e.g., the relative speed, terminal voltage, etc. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is evaluated under different system configurations as mentioned in the second contingency and compared to that of an existing adaptive backstepping controller and a conventional power system stabilizer (PSS). Simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed control scheme over the existing controllers.

Artificial neural network (ANN) models are able to predict future events based on current data. The usefulness of an ANN lies in the capacity of the model to learn and adjust the weights following previous errors during training. In this study, we carefully analyse the existing methods in neuronal spike sorting algorithms. The current methods use clustering as a basis to establish the ground truths, which requires tedious procedures pertaining to feature selection and evaluation of the selected features. Even so, the accuracy of clusters is still questionable. Here, we develop an ANN model to specially address the present drawbacks and major challenges in neuronal spike sorting. New enhancements are introduced into the conventional backpropagation ANN for determining the network weights, input nodes, target node, and error calculation. Coiflet modelling of noise is employed to enhance the spike shape features and overshadow noise. The ANN is used in conjunction with a special spiking event detection technique to prioritize the targets. The proposed enhancements are able to bolster the training concept, and on the whole, contributing to sorting neuronal spikes with close approximations.

A novel multisampling time-domain architecture for CMOS imagers with synchronous readout and wide dynamic range is proposed. The architecture was implemented in a prototype of imager with 32x32 pixel array fabricated in AMS CMOS 0.35νm and was characterized for sensitivity and color response. The pixel is composed of an n+/psub photodiode, a comparator and a D flip-flop having 16% fill-factor and 30νmx26νm dimensions. The multisampling architecture requires only a 1 bit per pixel memory instead of 8 bits which is typical for time-domain active pixel architectures. The advantage is that the number of transistors in the pixel is low, saving area and providing higher fill-factor. The maximum frame rate is analyzed as a function of number of bits and array size. The analysis shows that it is possible to achieve high frame rates and operation in video mode with 10 bits. Also, we present analysis for the impact of comparator offset voltage in the fixed pattern noise. Copyright 2007 ACM.

Synchronous generators are essential components of electric power systems. They are present both in hydro and thermal power plants, performing the function of converting mechanical into electrical energy. This paper presents a visual approach to manipulate parameters that affect operation limits of synchronous generators, using a specifically designed software. The operating characteristics of synchronous generators, for all possible modes of operation, are revised in order to link the concepts to the graphic objects. The approach matches the distance learning tool requirements and also enriches the learning process by developing student trust and understanding of the concepts involved in building synchronous machine capability curves. © 2012 IEEE.

Ossifying fibroma is a benign neoplasm composed of fibrocellular tissue and mineralized material of varying appearance, which is most commonly seen in the posterior region of the mandible as a solitary lesion. We report an unusual case of synchronous ossifying fibroma of maxilla and mandible. To the best of our knowledge, only 13 similar cases have been previously reported.

The reconstruction of bilateral osteoradionecrosis (ORN) of mandibular defects using a single free bone flap is rarely performed because extensively radiated neck tissue with severe fibrosis is usually unsuitable for vascularized reconstruction. Thirty-one patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) underwent bilateral reconstruction of advanced ORN in the mandible using a single fibular osteocutaneous flap. Clinical factors associated with the operation were assessed, including classification of mandible defects, types of recipient vessels, perioperative complications, and postoperative outcomes. All of the fibular osteocutaneous flaps survived completely, with the exception of 1 inner skin paddle that presented partial necrosis in a reconstruction of through-and-through defects. All patients experienced an improvement in cosmetic results 6 months after the reconstruction, whereas 23 patients experienced improved mouth opening compared to the preoperative condition. Advanced bilateral ORN in patients with NPC could be synchronously reconstructed with a single fibular osteocutaneous flap. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Head Neck, 2015.
