Appalling behaviour

'Appalling Behaviour' is a critically acclaimed contemporary Australian monologue, written by AWGIE Award winning playwright, Stephen House. This production, directed and creatively adapted by Shane Pike, was presented at the Brisbane Powerhouse in February 2016, as part of Queensland's LGBTIQ festival, Melt. This adaptation of the work experimented with notions of gender, taking the original script and manipulating character and scene to investigate expressions of identity beyond the traditional notions of binary gender-norms. To this end, the sole character (and actor) was (re)presented as a homeless bi-sexual queen with the aim of inferring that gender un/ab-normative characters can exist not only as disruptors/comments on/agitators of traditional expectations of performed gender (both onstage and off), but can also exist as accepted characters in and of themselves. Put simply: can a bi-sexual queen just be an actor/character in a play, or do all gender extra-normative characters inherently exist as political, social and cultural challengers? If so, why is this the case and should we be aiming for this kind of character to be an accepted part of the performative fabric, seamless and fitting within any onstage situation and play (why can't Willy Loman, King Lear or Nora be gender non-normative), or should such (re)presentations always exist as 'different'? Is it time for individual expressions of gender to just 'be' and be accepted as givens, or are we not quite there yet?

Quick Draw

'Quick Draw' is an installation integrating large-scale fabric works along with a lecture performance recorded as a digital video. 'Quick Draw' engages pictorial, literary and vernacular quotations in order to replay and reveal the complexities of gender politics, representation and language. In particular, it examines the relationship between abstraction, feminism and painting, following through an iconoclastic impulse that is at play in these histories. 'Quick Draw' was developed and presented as a solo exhibition for Seventh Gallery, Melbourne in 2015. 'Quick Draw II' was revised for the exhibition ‘Like A Burden’, held at Metro Arts Galleries, Brisbane in 2015.

Unthinkable II

'Unthinkable II' is an installation integrating a large scale fabric work along with a lecture performance, recorded as a digital video. This work critically examines the engendering of language in relation to histories of conceptual art and abstract painting, reframing material language as part of a broader practice strategy to re-perform a subjective feminist archive. This installation was developed and presented as a solo exhibition for Blindside Gallery, Melbourne in 2015.

Like a burden

'Like A Burden' was an exhibition developed and presented for Metro Arts Galleries in 2015. It drew together several large scale fabric works 'Heavy Thinking'; 'Quick Draw II' and 'Well Hung' within the gallery space, along with a large series of ink and pencil drawings and a lecture performance recorded and projected as a digital video. This body of work foregrounds the activist feminist voice through quotation, citation and reiteration and is part of a broader practice strategy to re-perform a subjective feminist archive.

Unthinkable

'Unthinkable' is an installation comprising drawings and fabric works, which were placed onto a large-scale wall painting. This work engages with the gender politics of art criticism through strategies of redrawing, in particular the commentary that Helen Frankenthaler's painting practice was 'unthinkable' without Jackson Pollock. 'Unthinkable' was developed and presented as part of BEAF 2013: Brisbane Experimental Art Festival, curated by Rachael Parsons and Stephen Russell, held at the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts.

Warning constraint limit experience

'Warning constraint limit experience' is an installation comprising drawings, a large scale fabric work, and a performative video. This work explores the performative act of drawing and the limits of language and subjectivity. The fabric work acts as a bodily extension that both facilitates and constrains movement during the drawing process and operates as a provisional structure for viewing the work in the gallery. This work was developed and presented at The Lock-Up Cultural Centre, Newcastle NSW in 2011 and revised for the solo exhibition ‘I build my dwelling’, held at Metro Arts in 2012.

Language is, language is not

‘Language is, Language is not’ is an installation comprising wall drawings, a fabric drawing prosthetic, performance and digital video. This work investigates ‘redrawing’ as a revisionist feminist strategy, taking as it’s starting point Mel Bochner’s work ‘Language is not Transparent’ (1970). 'Language is, Language is not' functions as both homage and critique, drawing on the legacy of conceptual art and questioning the engendering of language that it implies. This work was developed and presented for Bus Projects, Melbourne in 2012, and subsequent versions exhibited at Screen Space, Melbourne and Metro Arts Galleries, Brisbane.

Muscle flex

'Muscleflex' is an installation comprising large scale fabric works, wall drawings, performance and digital video. The large-scale fabric works act as bodily extensions for two performers and constrain movement during the drawing process. These drawing performances are documented and re-presented as digital video works. This work examines the limits of language and subjectivity and offers a feminist engagement with the history of abstract painting. 'Muscle flex' was developed and presented for KINGS Artist Run Gallery, Melbourne in 2012 and revised for the exhibition 'I build my dwelling', at Metro Arts Galleries, Brisbane in 2012.

Exploring the economic business case for incorporating biophilic urbanism

Linking sustainability, ecology and economics, this dissertation explored the decision making process for incorporating biophilic urbanism. Biophilic urbanism refers to the use of natural elements, or biophilic elements, as functional design features in urban landscapes to address climate change issues in rapidly growing economies. Informed by five global case studies, this dissertation introduced a novel term, ‘biophilic services’ to describe various characteristics that link the impact of biophilic elements to value. A model is also presented outlining underlying decision making logic for incorporating biophilic urbanism. These findings have immediate and practical implications for integrating biophilic urbanism into the fabric of the built environment.

Wear Next: An Exploration into the Future of Wearable Technology

Technology is increasingly infiltrating all aspects of our lives and the rapid uptake of devices that live near, on or in our bodies are facilitating radical new ways of working, relating and socialising. This distribution of technology into the very fabric of our everyday life creates new possibilities, but also raises questions regarding our future relationship with data and the quantified self. By embedding technology into the fabric of our clothes and accessories, it becomes ‘wearable’. Such ‘wearables’ enable the acquisition of and the connection to vast amounts of data about people and environments in order to provide life-augmenting levels of interactivity. Wearable sensors for example, offer the potential for significant benefits in the future management of our wellbeing. Fitness trackers such as ‘Fitbit’ and ‘Garmen’ provide wearers with the ability to monitor their personal fitness indicators while other wearables provide healthcare professionals with information that improves diagnosis. While the rapid uptake of wearables may offer unique and innovative opportunities, there are also concerns surrounding the high levels of data sharing that come as a consequence of these technologies. As more ‘smart’ devices connect to the Internet, and as technology becomes increasingly available (e.g. via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth), more products, artefacts and things are becoming interconnected. This digital connection of devices is called The ‘Internet of Things’ (IoT). IoT is spreading rapidly, with many traditionally non-online devices becoming increasingly connected; products such as mobile phones, fridges, pedometers, coffee machines, video cameras, cars and clothing. The IoT is growing at a rapid rate with estimates indicating that by 2020 there will be over 25 billion connected things globally. As the number of devices connected to the Internet increases, so too does the amount of data collected and type of information that is stored and potentially shared. The ability to collect massive amounts of data - known as ‘big data’ - can be used to better understand and predict behaviours across all areas of research from societal and economic to environmental and biological. With this kind of information at our disposal, we have a more powerful lens with which to perceive the world, and the resulting insights can be used to design more appropriate products, services and systems. It can however, also be used as a method of surveillance, suppression and coercion by governments or large organisations. This is becoming particularly apparent in advertising that targets audiences based on the individual preferences revealed by the data collected from social media and online devices such as GPS systems or pedometers. This type of technology also provides fertile ground for public debates around future fashion, identity and broader social issues such as culture, politics and the environment. The potential implications of these type of technological interactions via wearables, through and with the IoT, have never been more real or more accessible. But, as highlighted, this interconnectedness also brings with it complex technical, ethical and moral challenges. Data security and the protection of privacy and personal information will become ever more present in current and future ethical and moral debates of the 21st century. This type of technology is also a stepping-stone to a future that includes implantable technology, biotechnologies, interspecies communication and augmented humans (cyborgs). Technologies that live symbiotically and perpetually in our bodies, the built environment and the natural environment are no longer the stuff of science fiction; it is in fact a reality. So, where next?... The works exhibited in Wear Next_ provide a snapshot into the broad spectrum of wearables in design and in development internationally. This exhibition has been curated to serve as a platform for enhanced broader debate around future technology, our mediated future-selves and the evolution of human interactions. Volume change behaviour of fine grained solis

Soils in and and semi-arid zones undergoes volume changes due to wetting. Depending upon the type of clay minerals present, degree of saturation, externally applied load and bonding, the fine grained soils either swells or compresses. One of the parameter that affects the volume change behaviour is the primary clay mineral present in their clay size fraction. A simple method of identifying the same has been presented. It has been brought out that in an expansive unsaturated undisturbed soil, the diffuse double layer repulsion, the stress state and the bonding play significant role in their volume change behaviour. In non-expansive fine grained unsaturated undisturbed soils, the shearing resistance at particle level (including the matrix suction and bonding) and fabric play a significant role in influencing the volume change behaviour. While both the mechanism co-exist, one of them play a dominant role depending upon the primary clay mineral is swelling or non swelling.

Optical, Field-Emission, and Antimicrobial Properties of ZnO Nanostructured Films Deposited at Room Temperature by Activated Reactive Evaporation

ZnO nanostructures were deposited on flexible polymer sheet and cotton fabrics at room temperature by activated reactive evaporation. Room-temperature photoluminescence spectrum of ZnO nanostructured film exhibited a week intrinsic UV emission and a strong broad yellow-orange visible emission. TEM and HRTEM studies show that the grown nanostructures are crystalline in nature and their growth direction was indentified to be along [002]. ZnO nanostructures grown on the copper-coated flexible polymer sheets exhibited stable field-emissio characteristics with a threshold voltage of 2.74 V/mu m (250 mu A) and a very large field enhancement factor (beta) of 23,213. Cotton fabric coated with ZnO nanostructures show an excellent antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus bacteria (Gram positive), and similar to 73% reduction in the bacterial population is achieved compared to uncoated fabrics after 4 h in viability. Using a shadow mask technique, we also selectively deposited the nanostructures at room temperature on polymer substrates.

Generic Routing Rules and a Scalable Access Enhancement for the Network-on-Chip RECONNECT

RECONNECT is a Network-on-Chip using a honeycomb topology. In this paper we focus on properties of general rules applicable to a variety of routing algorithms for the NoC which take into account the missing links of the honeycomb topology when compared to a mesh. We also extend the original proposal [5] and show a method to insert and extract data to and from the network. Access Routers at the boundary of the execution fabric establish connections to multiple periphery modules and create a torus to decrease the node distances. Our approach is scalable and ensures homogeneity among the compute elements in the NoC. We synthesized and evaluated the proposed enhancement in terms of power dissipation and area. Our results indicate that the impact of necessary alterations to the fabric is negligible and effects the data transfer between the fabric and the periphery only marginally.

Effect of insertion of buffer-strip on the response of carbon-epoxy system in short beam tests

dThe work looks at the response to three-point loading of carbon-epoxy (CF-EP) composites with inserted buffer strip (BS) material. Short beam Shear tests were performed to study the load-deflection response as well as fracture features through macroscopy on the CF-EP system containing the interleaved PTFE-coated fabric material. Significant differences were noticed in the response of the CF-EP system to the bending process consequent to the architectural modification. It was inferred that introduction of small amounts of less adherent layers of material at specific locations causes a decrement in the load carrying capability. Further the number and the ease with which interface separation occurs is found to depend on the extent to which the inserted layer is present in either single or multiple layer positions.

A study of geotechnical properties of Cochin Marine Clays

Most of the Greater Cochin area, which is undergoing rapid industrialisation, consists of extremely soft marine clay calling for expensive deep foundations. This paper presents a study on the physical properties and engeering characteristics of Cochin marine clays. These marine clays are characterised by high Atterberg limits and natural water contents. They are moderately sensitive with liquidity indices ranging over 0.46 to 0.87.The grain size distribution shows almost equal fractions of clay and silt size with sand content varying around 20%. Use of a dispersing agent in carrying out grain size distribution test plays an important role. The fabric of these clays had been identified as flocculant. The pore water has low salinity which results in marginal changes in properties on washing.Consolidation test results showed a preconsolidation pressure of up to about 0.5 kg/cm2 with high compression indices. Compression index vs liquid limit yielded a correlation comparable to that of published data. The undisturbed samples have a much larger coefficient of secondary consolidation as a result of flocculant fabric. These clays have very low undrained shear strength.
